people have a very difficult time grasping that Ireland a) was, in fact, violently colonized by the British (six of the counties are literally still a settler colony!) and b) exists in the twenty-first century. the people in those ~beautiful timeless villages~ you’re imagining as home to “ancient” “Celtic” magic and supernatural entities go to school, they go to work, they have smartphones and use TikTok, and they’re are dealing with an ever-worsening housing crisis and the impact of a century of simultaneous neglect and fetishization by the postcolonial state.

the problem with the addiction metaphor for avatars in the magnus archives isn't actually with the metaphor itself, it's that it's treated as the Only way to understand monsterhood.

"jon made the choice to go after live statements because they felt good" is true

"jon felt good when he took live statements as a metaphor for addiction" is true

"jon felt good when he took live statements because victimizing people feels empowering" is true

"jon felt good when he took live statements Because Eating Feels Good" Is Also True

it's easy to say that jon made The Choice to continue being a monster, there's plenty of characters in the show who've said as much.

but the choice to continue being a monster is Equally the choice to Survive, to continue living. and trying to have a conversation about the Morality of jon's choice, as if it is Only about how good it feels to be monstrous, as if the addiction to living can be separated from the reality of dying. is a bit ridiculous !

the whole point of jon's situation, of Being an avatar, is that it's not Fair. jon was turned into a monster without his knowledge or consent, and then was told that there was no way out of it but to die.

it's not Fair to blame someone for wanting to live, it's not Fair to hurt someone to continue living. both are true, and that's Exactly what makes it interesting ! Why avatars can be both victims and victimizers in turn.

what makes someone like jon different from someone like jared hopsworth isn't their capacity for violence or to cause pain, it's the Choice To Continue Feeling Compassion For Other People. to make the active Choice to see other human beings As People and care about the harm you cause them.

so much of the narrative of tma is about characters who are stripped of agency, who still make Meaningful Choices Anyways. by Choosing to care, even as that choice hurts you. to continue to care even though it would feel Good not to.

this isn't Separate from the metaphor about addiction, it's in Conversation with it.

I just read Phantom of the Opera today (By Gaston Leroux) and I feel really weird trying to engage with the online content because the book is my only reference for the story but I know the phantom is changed to be a proper romantic option in the musical/movie while in the book he is literally the toxic asshole to say he is going to kill himself if you break up with him. Except he is also gonna blow up an opera house and kill everyone else too.

So keep being taken aback by seeing so many people be like "Christine should have chosen the Phantom" "The Phantom was so romantic" because i am just here like "YOU MEAN THE DERANGED ABUSIVE MURDERER MAN?!?!" "WHAT ARE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT?!?!?"

It's Immensely Funny To Me How Andrew Lloyd Webber Read This Passage From The Book And Was Like Yeah

it's immensely funny to me how andrew lloyd webber read this passage from the book and was like yeah the journey down to the phantom's lair is this really breathtaking magical gondola ride where christine is just captivated by the strange and fantastical beauty of it all (see below)

It's Immensely Funny To Me How Andrew Lloyd Webber Read This Passage From The Book And Was Like Yeah

when in the novel they're both like in a rowboat in the dark with christine scared out of her mind and confused as hell while erik is paddling like he's out for an extreme day of fishing and just staring christine down for the entire duration of the journey without blinking once . like mind you his eyes quite literally GLOW in the DARK and he's just fucking staring into her soul and silently rowing and probably not even breathing like

Two Irish words I find interesting, found out about them in the book Thirty Two Words For Field by Manchán Magan :

"Iarmhaireacht - the loneliness you feel at cockcrow, when you are the only person awake and experience that existential pang of disconnection, of not belonging" "Díláthair - (...)the abscense felt when something or somewhere has been depopulated or destroyed by other human beings."

now that i think about it, jonathan harker would’ve been a great character in frankenstein. he’s so completely oblivious to dracula’s red flag parade that he’d probably completely avert the creature’s murderous rampage by accidentally befriending him after spending a page and a half writing about some weirdly tall homeless guy with daddy issues he ran into

Irish language things

One thing I’ll never not find interesting is the intersection between Irish and English. Especially how young people navigate this.

Gaeltacht colleges/ courses are an excellent example of this. Gaeltachts are Irish speaking areas in Ireland. There are very few of them left (most being in the Republic). A big source of income for these areas are setting up colleges or courses where young people can come and participate in for a week or two or even three. They’re basically summer camps where you’re only allowed to speak Irish. You do classes as well as fun activities. They’re really useful for young people to learn Irish and do well in their exams.

The linguistic example I was thinking of is what we say when we’re trying to get by someone. Most cultures will say “excuse me”. We sometimes do as well, but most Irish people will say “sorry”. This then translates over to Irish where people say “(Tá) brón orm”, meaning “I’m sorry”. Even when excuse me is “gabh mo leithscéal” in Irish.

Where young people and gaelcholáistí come into this is with the hilarious “brónzies”. I don’t know if this is exclusive to Ireland, but in text talk people shorten sorry to “soz”. Then that developed into “sozies”. And thus young people use “brónzies” a lot (mostly ironically) at Irish speaking summer camps.

People have conflicting opinions of “brónzies”. Most think it’s an abomination, which I agree with. But I think that’s what makes it so funny.

Remember, being kind is punk rock. Being overly polite due to anxiety is prog rock. A hug is alt rock unless it goes on too long then it's folk rock. Empathy is third wave ska. Being mean, though, is not punk rock. Bc being mean is pop punk

Talking to people who aren’t REALLY into classics sucks sometimes bc it’s understandable enough yk, acquired taste and all that, but also it’s like I SWEAR I’m not being pretentious by saying my favourite novels are Frankenstein/Dracula/Les Misérables THEY GENUINELY ARE 😭 IM GENUINELY ATTACHED TO THE CHARACTERS AND GENUINELY HAVE REREAD THEM MULTIPLE TIMES (except for Les Mis. I am… still not finished my first read it’s a long-ass book ok man leave me be) AND IM GENUINELY EXTREMELY ARTISTICALLY INSPIRED BY THEM ALL IM SORRY I am but a simple history nerd who genuinely likes reading about old men with psychological problems and almost-human-cryptids that are metaphors 🙏🙏

Irish language things

One of the many things I find interesting about Irish is that we have no word for yes or no. There are a few languages like this in which you echo back the question as a response.

So in English if you are asking “Did you buy ___?”.

You could reply with “I did buy ___”, but that’s quite formal and nobody would really say that. So you can simply reply with “yes/ no”.

But in Irish if you ask the same thing “Ar cheannaigh tú ___?”.

You can only reply with “Cheannaigh mé/ Níor cheannaigh mé ___”. Meaning I did buy/ I didn’t buy ___.

Young Irish speakers try to get away with using “Tá” or “Sea” as a universal yes and “Níl” as a universal no. But this is incorrect and drives older Irish speakers/ teachers mad. So don’t use them in your orals!

Most people do shorten things by just saying “Cheannaigh/ Níor cheannaigh” and not echoing back the whole sentence of what you did/ didn’t buy.

But yeah it’s just another one of those interesting linguistic things that can’t be fully translated to English. And it actually causes problem for people in school learning Irish because we try to translate what we’re thinking in English onto the paper.

Gotta love the English colonialism still affecting us to this day!
