How do I choose which details to draw in non-photorealistic art? I feel so tempted to try and draw everything, but then it looks too busy and cluttered. So many illustrators seem to have a balance of realistic proportions and stuff but not as many details
In semi-realistic styles, you have to choose what to keep and what to simplify. My advice would be to keep detail in the areas of focus (the face and the hands are good points of focus). Within the face, you also have smaller areas of focus, such as the eyes, nose, and mouth.
If you’re having trouble with drawing TOO much detail, try this exercise:
1) Try to draw the body/object/face in as few lines as possible while still looking like the original.
2) Then, figure out which parts look weird without the detail (the face, and eyes especially, will probably look flat or fake) and add in as much as needed.
Also! Don’t be afraid to look at those illustrators you think are doing this well and studying where they put how much detail in their drawings. You can learn a lot from observing other artists!

black history month is coming to a closeeee but i have something that’ll help you draw black characters in any month! if it was helpful then hey… here’s my kofi 😏
morty how the heck do you draw top heavy bodies (kinda like kuins) because its hell 2 me
OK SO THIS IS LATE AND IM BAD AT EXPLAINING SO I JUST SCREENSHOT’D MY PROCESS
FIRST, GET YOURSELF SOME MOOD MUSIC
BASE SKETCH: I don’t usually draw what’s in red there, but this is your basic inverted triangle shape. Basically, as long as you make sure the shoulders create an exaggerated silhouette that highlights the waist, you’re doing the top heavy thing right. Generally, you don’t wanna shrink the waist too much or else it looks REALLY weird, so if you want to exaggerate the shape more, try to focus more on the arms and shoulders. Keep the hips narrow.
LINING SHIT. Add some core muscles to actually support all that up top. I like making the pecs particularly pointy just to drive home the triangle thing.
It’s ya boi
do you have any tips for anatomy?? the way you draw bodies flows so well and looks so natural, but its also really detailed!!
Thank you!!! There is too much to say on the matter so I summarised some basics. The best way to learn is to draw nudes (looooots of nudes), but I hope those tips make the process easier ~
yesterday i reblogged a drawing resource that included how to draw hijabs - and it honestly wasn’t the best advice i’ve seen out there
now, i’m not an artist. but what i saw was a video that included hijab styles most of us don’t really wear and incorrect terminology surrounding niqabs and burqas (yes, there is a difference between the two)
so, i went searching and found a tutorial that i felt was better! these drawing guides and examples come from @/winchestermeg on twitter, and i think they’re really great 💕
this has more relevant examples and correct terminologies, and is drawn by a muslim woman
enjoy, artists of tumblr!
Yesterday was my “Free to draw” day, and I was of course, drawing my guilty pleasure that is goth nerd boys. In light of the many beetles in my room that have crawled their way in, I decided to make this beetle witch character.
I thought I show people my thought process when creating a character. This is basically it, I always start by drawing the face then getting a concept, which ends with the body/colors scheme. Depending on the character, this process can take hours, days or a couple of minutes. I plan to make a full illustration of this guy, pretty soon.

So here are my tips for drawing side profile views and study people’s faces! I wish I could explain more but I’m all over the place I’m sorry ㅠㅠㅠㅠ but well, I hope this can be useful for someone!
Hello? Im getting into drawing and you leg so well? Any advice?
YES! Ok so disclaimer, I did not make this technique. The technique I use i learnt from Sycra on Youtube, please go check out their videos cause they are super detailed and excellent. I also learned my colour theory from their videos, seriousy good stuff. Ok so I usually start out with a hip box. How this is shaped depends on how you want ur character to look i guess but it’s roughly up turned isosceles trapezium.
from here the basic measurements are about halves not including the hip box. I tend to make the thighs the same height as the torso.
Ok so here is where Sycra’s technique comes in. They call it the lightning technique i think?? you essentially draw a curvy lightning bolt then connect it up.
line over top and adjust + feet
the actual composition of the leg i like to think of as tubes with one end smaller than the other. So the thighs are larger at the top and thinner towards the knee. The shin is a more pronounced curve though. You can also cross two lines over as shown and use that as a guideline.
I always use the lightning technique for legs from profile since it works best. The back of the shin is curved while the front is straight unlike the thigh which seems to be soft and curvy all over aha
I hope this makes some kind of sense??????
