Yesterday Was My “Free To Draw” Day, And I Was Of Course, Drawing My Guilty Pleasure That Is Goth

Yesterday was my “Free to draw” day, and I was of course, drawing my guilty pleasure that is goth nerd boys. In light of the many beetles in my room that have crawled their way in, I decided to make this beetle witch character.

I thought I show people my thought process when creating a character. This is basically it, I always start by drawing the face then getting a concept, which ends with the body/colors scheme. Depending on the character, this process can take hours, days or a couple of minutes. I plan to make a full illustration of this guy, pretty soon.

This is more just some messy thoughts rather than a tutorial, but some people might find it useful?? The best tips I can give is still just to practice. Take a life drawing class if you can, or just use images of people. You can also learn a lot by copying the work of artists you like (just don’t claim it as your own, of course).

I do have a book recommendation though! Andrew Loomis “Figure Drawing for All It’s Worth”. I remember it used to be extremely easy to find free PDFs of that book, but then it got back in print so I’m not sure. It’s a very old book.

A Tutorial Masterpost

I said that I’d show some tutorials I have saved up to someone, but decided that I’d just go ahead and post most of what I have stored away and create a sort of masterpost out of it. (I figure it’ll help me just as much since, as of now, they’re all pretty scattered between my Tumblr and bookmarks)

A lot of these are hosted on my personal Tumblr, but I don’t change my url so it’s pretty safe to bookmark them there (and not have to worry about the url changing) if you don’t wish to reblog them yourself for whatever reason.

hey! can i please get good references of like, simplifications of leg muscles and i guess legs in general? probably the pelvis too, the lower body is just killing me right now. (i mean in art, my own legs are fine =P)

No problem, anon! Here are some notes on legs that I’ve picked up, but there are probably some more thorough ones (with actual muscle names lol) floating around the web if you want to check those out as well. Just remember to balance curve/straight on either side.

image

***EDIT: The stick figure thing is called “crickets” by the creator because they look like cricket legs. I just remembered that.***

Here are some of my favorite guides to muscle simplifications by Will Weston and Sycra Yasin:

And for good measure, here’s some refresher on more gestural ways of looking at limbs:

How to Draw Native People: a Tutorial/Reference Guide

As requested, here is a basic guide for how to draw Indigenous peoples (mostly focused on North America)! Also please note that this is not an exhaustive list of Native American phenotypes/features, and more like an intro on very common features that can be found in us, and even then, not altogether at once on a single person’s face. I highly encourage the use of references and care taken into research when drawing. I may do a part 2 that goes slightly more into depth, but for now, enjoy part one.

Resouces:

How to draw Native Skin tutorial (don’t draw us red!)

List of Native American Celebrities, which include their tribe(s) and home country, with 1,250 names, to use for your referencing pleasure

How to draw black people by Peachdeluxe, & Black hair in depth by misslaney for mixed black Natives

How to draw Asian People, a guide by Chuwenjie, for mixed Asian Natives AND because it includes a lovely tutorial on monolid eyes, a shared feature of Native people

get drawin!!

do you guys think you could showcase how you do different body types? (like buff skinny fat etc)

First of all, we should always practice life drawing! Your skill in drawing the figure will always be your basis to how you modify and stylize it. Creating this foundation of proportion and gesture will give you a better understanding of how to create figures of different proportions than the “average” figure.

image

Past this, we’re going to need to learn some anatomy. We need to know the basic, large muscle groups to create believable muscled characters. And, we need to know how fat is distributed (commonly) on the body to create believable fat characters. We need to know the skeletal structure to understand all of this, and particularly how some bones might show in super skinny people (like ribs and hip bones for example.)

I recommend checking out Sycra for anatomy tips.

Here’s some examples of common traits I’ve seen. By no means is this a comprehensive guide, but it’s a starting point. The best thing to do is to keep searching up guides and learning from real photos - as well as cross referencing!

I Finally Reached 5000 Followers *quietly Cheers* And @strongity Asked Me A Day Before That Happened

I finally reached 5000 followers *quietly cheers* and @strongity asked me a day before that happened to maybe do a tutorial thing on eyes and anatomy… So I did my best. I have kind of moved past using methods to draw (like using boxes to create shapes), just because I’m so used to drawing people. It kind of became a tips thing rather than a step by step guide, but hopefully it will help some of you!
