After slowly chipping away at this for a while, I'm finally done drawing the cast of The Magnus Archives!
It wouldn't be a distortion drawing if you had any idea what was going on

Imagine if the distortion’s hallways respond to the person trapped in them, but in different ways
Door (pre-michael): automatic and pretty fast. Just root out the things the victim finds most unnerving and change form to echo that
Michael: it’s still automatic, but the part of michael that is something sort of like a “who” keeps being surprised by the hallway shapes it’s currently in. Not surprised enough to react, especially not after years of being michael, but still “huh, that’s a new one”
Helen: no longer automatic, but a lot more precise. Human-helen’s experience with real estate means she’s seen a lot of buildings and talked a lot of strangers into buying those buildings at a higher price than maybe they should have sold for. She makes sure that the design of the corridors is optimized in a way the distortion never quite bothered with
As much as i love ruminating on michael, i also love helen, because i see her as being the best of both human and spiral, able to use everything she has from both experiences in a way “existence tied to its pointlessness” michael never really could
is helen/melanie/georgie a thing people ship or is that specific polycule not a thing in this fandom
i think what michael shelley wanted more than anything was to be loved or even just appreciated, but in the neurodivergent way where you think that the reason you aren't recognized is because you haven't done enough rather than because the people you want recognition from won't give it to you
the distortion reflects this by being bizarrely overt, making campaigns of terror against specific people, being the center (or at least a very hard-to-ignore presence) in the lives of its victims, rather than eating them outright or befriending them like helen does (which reflects a much more businesslike "get the job done, make some connections, and move on" attitude that likely reflects her job when she was human)
The Distortion would have become Helen regardless of if it had ever become Michael or not.
Think about it. Real estate is a pretty fun place to be an erronious door. Helen Richardson would probably have walked through as in canon, even without Michael to lure her in, and we know that her reaction was to make a map. So she makes a map, gets taken back after giving her Statement, (Jon never gets the “do you even know they’re lying to you” warning,) and she Becomes. Ta-da, Helen Distortion, no Michael involved at all.
I think Michael and Helen would have different colour schemes. Michael is like a walking pansexual flag to me while Helen leans more polysexual flag

Have almost finished re-listening to TMA in a week and a half :>

Helen is like that one woman in your workplace that knows literally all the gossip and cannot live without spreading it but she doesn't even fucking work there and nobody knows how she hasn't been kicked off the premises
If someone had told me Helen Richardson had a cameo in Moana 2, I would've watched that movie in theater

It seems to be a rite of passage for all tma enjoyers to obnoxiously assign entities to every piece of media they consume, which is why I present to you another exhibit of this totally normal behaviour, this time for The Spiral.
I am rewatching this little kdrama called 'Bad and Crazy' and for the first half, it doesn't seem like much, although the themes surrounding mental disorder are very much present. The second half however, has a huge focus on subjects like gaslighting, loss of memory, therapeutic malpractice and doors. Lots of doors. I'm not doing it justice, I know, but it has the perfect culmination of doors and mental health issues. You've seen the Distortion make doors appear out of nowhere and you've seen them lie and manipulate and whatnot but have you seen doors INSIDE someone's head? You'll find them here!
It's starting to sound like I'm selling this drama but like, if you love the Spiral, you NEED to watch it. Also it's hilarious and has probably the best characters in kdrama that I have seen. Even if you don't watch kdramas, you'll like this one, it's built different.

I have decided that one of my favorite things about the Magnus Archives is that the one of the only unsexualized monsters or creatures (whether by the fandom or in the show) is the Vampires. I've literally never seen anything even mentioning them in a sexual or even romantic light. We were all collectively like "hnngnh seggsy hallway wife and husband 🥵♥️😳 werewolf cop lady step on me 🖐️😩 clown wife pls take my skin 🤪♥️🤡 oh vampire cool ig🙄 Where is my eyeball dilf at 👁️👁️🥵😍 prentiss🐛worm🐛me🐛pls 🥺🥺♥️"
