i had a fever dream in autocad last night (don’t ask, it’s unfortunately a common occurrence) where i was for some reason tasked with creating floor plans for aziraphels bookshop, unfortunately (due to what i’m assuming was miracled room extensions) the shop didn’t abide by the laws of physics and was literally impossible to draft. i woke up in a cold sweat at 3am. fell back asleep. and continued the exact same goddamn dream.

Se toda vez que eu me deitar, e meus olhos repousarem, seu rosto me aparecer em sonho, e te trazer para perto de mim... espero não ter que esperar até a noite para dormir.

Tips for writing dream sequences (from someone who has really vivid, weird dreams on a frequent basis)

My biggest pet peeve with fictional dream sequences is that they make too much sense!! They're too relevant! There's not enough random crazy stuff! That's not always unrealistic per se, but you are missing out on some of the fun ways you can reveal information about your character's mindset, fears, struggles, and future.

Most of my dreams have a goal or objective driving the plot, and it's usually urgent. Ex. "escape the huge storm on the horizon", "find a place to sleep for the night in an unfamiliar town", "find a bathroom". This is especially true of stress dreams.

Everything going on in the dream makes perfect sense to you during the dream. It doesn't feel like reality per se, but you think it is. You're living in a house full of vampires that could eat you at any moment? Seems legit.

Emotions and situations from the dreamer's life can/will find their way into dreams, with varying levels of subtlety. The dream could be about the stressful event itself, or it could be some sort of exaggerated metaphor. Ex. I was worried about whether I was a competent CS major while I was still trying to find a summer job/internship, and I was worried about what my professors must think of me. Such a good student on paper, still without summer plans. I dreamed that I ran into my professors all having lunch together at a restaurant (during a dream with a completely different storyline), and I was wearing my pajamas. They judged me.

Certain things are very hard to do in dreams. This could vary from person to person. For me, it's always driving (the brakes never work right), flying (I can't stay off the ground for very long), and running (it's like trying to run through waist-deep water).

People with PTSD may dream about the traumatic event happening differently than it actually happened. (Take this one with a grain of salt - I don't suffer from PTSD, I just research it sometimes so my blorbos can suffer accurately).

You can have a string of loosely connected or disconnected dream sequences back to back, each with an entirely different plot, setting, etc.

People can have reoccurring themes or plotlines in their dreams, which are often connected to their lives/psyche somehow. I frequently dream about running away from tornadoes and being in situations where there's some catastrophe coming but I'm the only one who understands that there's a problem and nobody will listen to me.

It's common for me to have a dream setting that I KNOW is someplace I'm familiar with, but it doesn't actually look like that place at all. Ex. "I dreamed that we were at my house, but it didn't look like my house..."

Dreams can end in cliffhangers. Sometimes I wake up right before I'm about to eat something delicious.

Sometimes people have dreams about doing things that they would never, ever do in real life, and they wake up feeling disgusted. This is Not a manifestation of their secret desires (*glares at Freud*).

Images are the most memorable parts of dreams. I forget the specific plot points, but I can still picture dozens of liminal spaces my brain has created, even years after I dreamed about it.

Dreams will fade from memory very quickly unless the dream had a strong impression on you, you write details about it down or you tell someone about it before you forget.

If you realize you're dreaming during your dream, sometimes you can control the dream going forward. This is called lucid dreaming. I've done it accidentally a couple times, and it's really hard to "hold on" to the dream and control it. I usually wake up soon after starting. With practice, you can get better at it.

Sometimes a normal/good dream can turn into a nightmare, and vice versa. Most of my dreams aren't really good or bad, they're something in between.

Your subconscious brain is CRAZY intuitive. We can argue over the existence of prophetic dreams (I've heard so many crazy stories), but at the end of the day, your subconscious brain knows things that you don't consciously know. If your character is in love with someone, their subconscious brain will know even if the character doesn't. Relationship problems? Deepest darkest fears and insecurities? Your brain knows. A dream predicted the downfall of my first relationship eight months before it happened, down to the reason why we failed. You can absolutely foreshadow this way. A character might subconsciously know what the consequences of their or other people's actions will be, understand things about the situation they're in, know things about the people they're interacting with, and more, despite their conscious realizations.

There are plenty of ways to make a dream sequence relevant to your story, but don't forget to add in some fun, random details. Character A is secretly in love with Character B? Have Character A dream about Character B confessing feelings to them while in a Vine Nostalgia themed restaurant over a plate of mac-n-cheese. The details are the fun part, and you can get as weird as you want. I once ran into my aunt in a dream, and she was wearing a backpack with a bunch of (fake?) hands sticking out of it, making a fan that rose above her back behind her head like some sort of peacock feather costume piece. I was so freaked out that I woke up. I dare you to get weirder than that.

Not everyone's brain works the same way. I have vivid, random, detailed, memorable dreams on a frequent basis. When I describe them to people they often ask "what were you on?". My roommate only remembers her dreams when they're nightmares. I have some friends who say they don't dream. Other friends have really boring, mundane dreams about their normal lives. Some people have weird dreams but only once in a blue moon. It's a good idea to decide off the bat what kinds of dreams your character has, and how often they remember them.

That's it for now, but I might make a part two if I think of more things to add. Feel free to reblog with your own personal dream expertise!

"you didn't dream this 🙄" IT DOESN'T MATTER ITS CALLED HAVING FUN. Plus, there's a chance they actually did.

I had a dream that Splinter sent the turtles to make a cobblestone generator and got mad when they called it "stone generator" so anything is possible I guess??

I can't believe home depot literally produced a wildly successful science fiction musical and we all just pretend it didn't happen. on one hand yes it had a boring white guy main character but like.... home depot just... Made it? And it had shit ton of box office sales? and no one even talks about this. this is like avatar (2009) all over again

Do you ever just wake up gasping for air because you were having a dream where you in a swimming pool underwater and since you obviously can't breathe underwater you hold your breath in the dream and then accidentally suffocate yourself in real life.

I had the most surreal experience where in my dream, dream me fell asleep (a double dream if you will), she dreamt of a top tier fanfic plot where she was a guy in an apocalypse type setting with no life skills or memories save for a sister, who gets picked up by a guy who he learns skills from, forms bonds etc for 5 years. After 5 years pass they both get tragically killed and are reborn back into the moment they met, me (him) with my memories intact, and I (well him) start retracing the steps of our life together only I am competent now and my tragically murdered lover is shocked at my competence in this apocalypse setting. Dream me then wakes up from her dream and goes holy shit write this down!!! And she does, when she is done, real me wakes up and I go holy shit I was right write that down!! Now it's scribbled in my notes app :)

I had a dream where for some reason my mom and sister were planning on buying me a trans flag for my birthday I think, and I'm confused . Like I don't identify as being transgender, I identify as being a gender-fluid and bisexual. ( well, more like pansexual but I like and prefer being labeled as bi for reasons I won't get into here)

But now I'm just wondering if I have this Secret Quest still locked away in my brain because I may be at a level to low to even consider starting, let alone completing it alive. Like how sometimes in video games, the quest that you were given sometimes gives you a suggested level to be at, or you would most likely die trying to do it.

I imagine if I did have that 'Secret Quest'. At the end of it I would just find a chest, that when you open it would just go: "Haha you're actually trans now! Good luck trying to unpack that one!" Or: "Haha ypu thought?!" Then just runs away like a freaking Goblin or just disappears. Leaving you by yourself and so confused...

I feel like starving today and few days ago might remove some of the weight gains, but getting lean is my goal. I might have sped up to extreme though, firstly i drink protein and then feel like almost dying, without enough water and carbs it is impossible for me to process glycogen enough, i don’t know medicine stuffs…. But if i eat carbs i still need to be in calorie deficit, one way or another i will be getting skinnier, all that monthly progress might jave been in vain.

But Ive heard one doesnt lose muscles quickly, I drink protein but I only eat light salad and very foods.

That said I feel headwise dizzy and its second time I remember messing up proportions of protein, drink too much and my head becomes hell, heart is aching feel like I’d die.

I’ve been reading higurashi so far and i am honestly going nuts with starvation, its definitely not good but ive eaten quite a bit too. Its confusing….. i have trained today either and I didnt yesterday barely, because i feel so little energy plus for most of day I had no access to containers of water because the water got boiled and therefore undrinkable. Having the pretaste of chocolate flavorsd protein left for so long without water feels disgusting. I can say that I probably have lost fat but it feels… ugh horrible and i dont know jow much muscle i lose since i javent trained today i am going to sleep tomorrow is sleep

okthis is kinda random but like is it just me or are dreams very fascinating? (when they aren't really stupid at least) because usually when I have dreams they always feel like some message or warning, I've never really had any stupid dreams, if I do have any dream at all its always somewhat scary or oddly interesting.

this also reminds me Abt how dreams are used in media sometimes. It's always so interesting when dreams are used in a specific way that makes them somewhat mysterious or intriguing , like using them to give warnings and stuff. its also cool when dreams are connected to how a character feels about a situation (which I think is used much more often than other options) because it can seem vastly different depending on how the dream looks and how the char reacts and all that jazz. anyways I forgot what I was gonna say after spacing out for like a whole minute with this Infront of me so uh yah DIES

A friend of mine told me about this really weird dream they had recently.

They were sitting at a table, eating soup, and across from them, a raccoon was also eating soup. The raccoon didn't do anything bad, it just finished the soup politely, using a little spoon and all.

A little strange, but not the weirdest/creepiest.

A few days ago, I had a sequence of bizarre dreams. They looked like they were in the point of view of a security camera. Every time the dream progressed, I would eventually do a 'mistake'. A pop up would show up saying 'WRONG. Try again.' and restart the whole dream from the beginning. Each time, it would lead to a different situation, but end with the same, making a 'mistake'.

I have no idea what that means

Dream Write Down #3

Today I had a dream I was in a class where we had to gather pieces of grass and twigs and put them together on a big piece of land inside a metal building. However I had this dream before so it was difficult to gather more twigs and grass since my past dream class had already gathered most.

Dream Write Down #2

Today I had a dream I was running away from someone that wanted to kill me in a white spiral staircase. I survived and ran to another building, there was people sitting down in black couches, i got closer to them when I saw a handsome guy with curly hair and right next to him was freaking Ezra Miller! I ran to him like 'Ezra!", he was all energetic and was hugging me (I dont think he knew me.. but that's Ezra for you).

Dream Write Down #1

Today I had a dream I was at my college campus, however there was so many doors and a bunch of different looking bathrooms. Then I transported to the SNL set where I saw Harry Styles dressed like an angel, with a pair of wings, a long brown wig, and a white robe.

Do y’all ever just have a dream and decide to incorporate it into your story?

Because right now I’m trying to figure out how to write a scene where my main character is digging through a bucket of fetuses because he needs the Mcguffin badly.

I would have crashed out

I had like the exact opposite dream last night lol where the grid was doing some weird grill the grid thing (so one by one) in a kitchen and lance grabbed like 10 straws from a container and was like “i’m gonna take all these straws, nobody can tell me what to do hehehe” and then very quietly he added “except fernando. he’s bossy, that one. sometimes i let him tell me what to do” with this sheepish smile and everyone Lost Their Shit

Had a weird dream involving Lance (sort of) I was at some sort of dinner or awards ceremony type thing and Lance had been invited but couldn't make it for some reason, so the organisers hired an actor to be Lance instead. Problem was the guy they got was the complete opposite of Lance - short, scrawny, ginger & bright blue eyes AND he had no clue who Lance was and just went around acting like an entitled prick using the occasion to drink as much expensive wine as possible 😭

I think scientists should invent something that kinda joins our brainwaves in visual form to the tv screens. And just show us a bunch of people and let us sleep and let our brains create some movie. Because most of the time the things that our brain can do and create is amazing. I have actually seen amazing things in my dreams that was better than all the movies in real life. Random guy on the street, cute lady in the groceries, your long lost relatives that you have no idea who they are but your brain is like ‘screw it, you’re casted as the 17th century police with fancy clothes’. If I’m not making sense, well, none of my dreams have ever made sense but they were awesome.
