Honestly besides Driver who I don't like as person much or as a character in Kylo. I am increasingly finding myself liking the cast but absolutely hating the character choices from the writing for most of them.
I don’t hate Rose Tico. I hate that she’s written as this scolding, impulsive woman who just goes around stunning people with an electro-prod just because they don’t want to fight in a war. Rose is more than that.
Don't get me wrong I didn't like the Rey Attack either I am just saying you can squint and explain where there is nothing that mitigates this one at all in my book. Yeah Finn’s backstory in no way calls for Comic Relief in my book. If they wanted this they never should have used Child Soldier background.
I keep thinking about how we were given the impression that Finn and Rose’s story would be a cool team up and that Rose would think he’s a Big Deal, but the storybook leaks basically give us a completely different dynamic, one where Rose drags an unwilling Finn around by the collar and scolds him for even trying to leave, and keeps him from leaving by force, and I hate that. I really hate that. It’s like the weak and questionable parts of Finn and Rey’s interaction before Harrison got injured and JJ reshot some stuff and changed their dynamic going forward because the antagonistic stuff wasn’t working. So why copypaste that bad dynamic that JJ already famously decided needed to be fixed? Actually make it worse? Bleh.
Yeah it was bad in TFA but this is worst not just because now they should know it was bad idea but also cause were once again lied to do about Finn with the dynamic described to us in marketing not existing in the actual movie. Beyond that also at least you can make the case Rey had a reason to attack Finn, Rose has no such Reason and Rose goes a step further by shocking Finn until he falls Unconscious after just getting off the medical bay. The fact that it will be played for laughs makes my blood boil.

I am not surprised as far as I can tell RJ went Full EU in that he might be approaching the first Clone Wars Cartoon and StarKiller from Force Unleashed power levels. Basically, the POC are filler not just because their little side plot seems to have no major influence on the plot the First Order seems to win easily.
However, in choosing to dive so deep into Force Mythology and awesome Force powers, anyone without said powers is simply left in the dust. This is basically the EU towards the end with the exception of mostly Han with Boba Fett and Lando to a lesser extent who survived off being Legacy from the OT. Ergo because RJ decided to keep the Force White and couldn't be bothered to come up with a compelling side plot. Well its no wonder there is a few mentions of Finn, a couple more about Rose and none about Poe. Nothing they do is plot relevant and any action scenes they get are easily overshadowed but what sounds like God Level Force Users. Who wants to watch Finn vs Phasma in the B-Plot when it has no emotional resonance and doesn't even look as cool as the Force Fights? Even with a compelling side plot and no Force in something this Force Centric it would be hard but with a boring side plot, its impossible. B-Plot is there to move the plot forward and break up the Force Beats only. The Force Plot always tend to overshadow the non Force Plot. RJ seemingly did zilch to prevent it and probably didn't even care. Slapped Rose in for some diversity points, tossed Finn the bone of beating Phasma and probably gave Poe some nice space scenes. Called it a day.
Look, if people had come out of this movie saying Finn is amazing and mentioned the Finnrey reunion, and talked about the diversity, and made clear statements that Kylo remains the villain and about how kick ass feminist things are, I would be able to stomach Rey random. Not the way things seem now.
I felt sympathy for Anakin but he still needed to die. The problem is why should I feel empathy for Kylo besides him being a SkySolo and a White Male? There is no other good reason. He grew up Rich with the Force and his biggest issues were his parents worked and his uncle didn't tell him about Darth Vader? Rey grew up sold into shit conditions on a desert backwater. Finn and millions of other as Child Soldiers ripped from their parents. Rose apparently lost her parents and her sister. And I am suppose to feel bad for Kylo. No there is no redemption strong enough. At least Anakin was a slave, who wanted to save his wife and kids and snapped after watching his mother die.
I always have to laugh when I see posts like “when Reylo becomes canon, then all of the antis will see the error of their ways.”
Because that will seriously never happen. I’m not going to say that it’s completely impossible for someone to write a redemption arc that is SO powerful that it wins me over. But the odds are seriously against it.
And honestly, even if they did somehow successfully redeem Kylo Ren to my satisfaction, I STILL wouldn’t be happy seeing him paired with one of his victims.
Most likely, even if LucasFilms does make the incredibly ghastly mistake of making Reylo canon, I will go to my grave screaming about all of the deaths at Kylo Ren’s hands..
I still haven’t shut up about Grimm pairing their lead character with a serial rapist. I’m not going to shut up about this either.
Canon isn’t a cure-all for a fucked up ship.
RJ seems to have done whatever he wanted and ignored all hints for Finn and Rey. I think you covered Finn pretty well but I want expand on Rey.
1) She is inexplicably superpowered in the Force. No Skywalker Blood, No Palpatine Blood, No Kenobi Blood, No Immaculate Conception just two random parents. And she is this strong with one week max of training? Even Anakin couldn't beat Dooku with Kenobi and 10 years and he was the chosen one. I know some have defended her against Mary Sue but come on now...
2) Unkar just decides not to sell her? He was going to beat her up and steal BB-8 but wont cash in on a super strong Force Sensitive girl? Also how the frak do they know she has the Force this strong? Are midichlorians back? Did a knight of Ren drop by scan her and decide not to walk off with such a strong force user?
3) Rey has a random Force bond with Kylo, has the Skywalker lightsaber call to her, Dreams of the island Luke is on and outpulls said Skywalker lightsaber when fighting Kylo but has no connection to the Skywalker Family at all? And prior to TFA had never even met Kylo....how does that even make logical sense.

The worse part about Finn and Rose stuff is I am willing to bet it gets played for laughs. Rose probably wont even say Sorry. Beyond that the lack of comments on Finn, Poe and Rose tell me there stuff will be boring or limited or both. And the Reylo stuff seems somewhat legit since this is clearly the Kylo and Luke show. Reylo stuff means Rey is a Rando or Kenobi at best. So all in all I doubt I enjoy this. The only positive Finn stuff is he takes out Phasma..
Luke is the weirdest one though since no one seems to agree across all spoilers seems to agree with what goes down at the end. Force Ghost, Force Projection, Clone, Dead, Alive some combination who knows. But based on Mark’s comments, I doubt it end great for him. Snoke is a nobody probably. But consider me extra salty if Rey really is a Rando and all the Force Users are White in this one just because RJ, KK and LF decided to keep the Force White and the POC in the B-Plot
Yes, I am sure it will be played for laughs and a “meet cute” - it’s really sitcom. Beyond the awfulness of what’s done to Finn’s character AGAIN which others have explained far better than I have - ffs he just got out of a coma and she zaps him to unconsciousness? It’s like knocking Han out after he was unfrozen in Jedi. Finn’s been through an unbelievable trauma, he’s off to find the one person he knows and cares about - and this new character I’m supposed to like comes and shocks him? It’s tone deaf on so many levels I can’t even believe someone decided this was a good idea (and what, the Resistance allows fellow soldiers to just attack people leaving? Really?)
And the Poe stuff with Leia - I’m sorry, what? Leia is telling someone they’re being too reckless? Has she forgotten who her brother and husband are again? Or her own self?
Why haven’t we gotten much on Canto Bright - it’s supposed to be a big piece, right?
I can’t even comment on the Rey Rando stuff, it is too crappy for words (and I was for Rey Random - but not that awful story about her parents). Why go to the trouble of casting Daisy, who looks more like she’s the child of Harrison and Carrie or Mark and SkyMom than Adam Driver does - and then not make her related. If she’s a random, then why?
The Luke stuff is just awful, every bit I’ve seen is worse than the last. The visual dictionary saying he didn’t know about Han dying, him throwing the saber, the milk with the sloth (OMG, that sounds bad), refusing to train Rey, and on and on. Then how he’s supposed to die…and that he never sees Leia again? That proves that these directors don’t give one shit about the characters that aren’t Rey and Kylo.
Because, yes, let’s mention the whole bait and switch with Finn. Because we can argue about the screams on Takodano, because that is just badly put together. We can argue about who’s awakening, although it sure as hell looks like Finn.
But you cannot explain Maz giving Finn Luke’s saber when Han is STANDING RIGHT THERE and has a stronger claim to it by marriage. UNLESS FINN IS FORCE SENSITIVE. You just can’t - unless it’s just simply “well, we need to get the saber to the end of the movie so…congrats, Finn! But it doesn’t mean anything.”
Basically it just feels because RJ was willing to dickride Kylo Ren and Adam Driver so hard who we know KK loves since Adam didn't even have to audition. RJ got himself Carte Blanche to do whatever he want. I mean JJ is the one who wanted John (and his execution was poor), KK never wanted John at all. So I am not all surprised and what is going down for FInn. Although I should note this is the fucking opposite of how they sold us Finn and Rose in the lead up. Where Rose was a big Fan of Finn. Instead it seems will get another does of a Female Partner outshining Finn until Phasma.
What does surprise me though is KK letting RJ making massive lore changes and retcons to the Force that override fucking George Lucas in the Luke Skywalker part of the plot. That is what surprises me. I knew it was bad sign when RJ got along with KK so well unlike all the other directors and got a new trilogy.
But apparently RJ is genius for Woobyifying another “Bad Boy“ White Male while marginalizing the POC to forgettable plot line and comic relief. Its not like we never seen this shit before. I get enough of the kid glove treatment for white monsters in the news thank you very much.
This doesn’t even make any sense story wise. Every Resistance member knows that Finn risked his life to stop Starkiller Base. Rose suddenly being “what, a traitor” makes zero fucking sense. If Finn wanted to betray the Resistance he would have done nothing and just let the FO blow them out of the sky.
Rian Johnson is willfully stupid when it comes to any of the characters of color but especially to Finn. Of course it makes no sense! But of course he doesn’t care because he’s too busy using his 2 brain cells on creating a fascist-loving white story for his lily white actors! It makes no sense because he doesn’t give a fuck about Finn.
I brought it up for TFA but its funny when we get the first Black Male Lead in Star Wars suddenly the standard rules for how you treat a male lead no longer apply. I mean Finn is similar to Luke ignoring (Luke being the overall main lead and having the Force) difference is Luke never got beat up by his friends and while he did have some embarrassing stuff happen to him he still got to end ANH strong. Landing the final shots on the Deathstar. Finn meanwhile ends in a coma at RJ request and lost every fight including one to a stomtrooper (a first in Star Wars) and to Rey of course despite being top of his class in tie ins in comabt.
He then enters TLJ and opens worrying about Rey (who is making googly eyes at Kylo if the rumors are too be trusted) and getting tazered by Rose. Before getting demoted to the B-Plot which incidentally includes all the POC with no Force Powers in Finn, Poe, Rose, DJ and Paige Tico with less screen time then Kylo. And apparently the B-Plot wasn't all that interesting since everyone is gushing about Kylo, Luke and Rey. I mean sure it looks like he beats Phasma but there was no development between Finn and Phasma in TFA...there was between Finn and Kylo but does anyone really thing FInn will even the socre against Kylo like a real Male Lead? I dont.
Absolutely sickening this window dressing Diversity and the wide scale acceptance of it in the fandom and the press. Disney is lucky Black Panther is coming so soon or I be boycotting their products.

Eh I have read before that Oscar really doesnt like promoting movies he doesnt have a major role in so I hope most of his stuff didnt end up on the cutting room floor although he is also a pretty busy actor...but my mind of late when it comes to TLJ jumps to the negative answer
JJ is the lesser of two evils that is all it is. Although I should note the coma was RJ request so that is not on JJ but of course JJ had plenty of issues all his own doing. However, at least JJ wasn't an apologist for Kylo. But yeah the only POC with any power seems to be Pablo Hidalgo incidentally he was also unlike KK and RJ not making every excuse under the sun for Kylo. Make of it what you will.
I don't understand why some fans think JJ Abrams will save Finn's arc when this man also made Finn be attacked during the entire movie, be a red herring and end the movie in a coma. The entire lucasfilm is guilty in this, they need more black artists to work in their movies or black characters will always be treat like this

I would be concerned again especially since the comics was a revolving door for POC outside of Nico. Alex Killed then went to White Room then to Hell somehow and got rez. Victor looks like he is about to be rezzed from getting killed in comics. Ultron tie in will be tricky. and Xavin eh that was really a mess ending with Xavin sacraficing themselves for Karolina and lets be honest Karolina was a “insert insult of choice” to Xavin.

Before the backlash I know I’m gonna receive for this post… I’m Mexican living in Mexico, ergo I’m “PoC” but it was completely unnecessary to change the race of the character. I’m completely against whitewashing, I believe character race must stay as the source material. But come on, this change was completely unnecessary.

That Star Wars Trailer....if all you care about is Reylo, you walked out extremely happy. If you care about Finn, Poe or Luke well prepare yourself to be extremely disappointed.
Driver has done less for TLJ then Rose. Harrison Ford who is a rich legit movie star who hates promotion does more work then Driver on promoting Star Wars. Driver really doesn't carry his weight but KK and RJ love him and the fans will apologize for any “pretty white boy” so I guess it doesn't matter. Anyway saw the trailer I was right.

Yes all the marketing so far does suggest that the B-Plot is for POC and insignificant compared to the White Characters and the Force A-Plot. But KK is a Saint and a Champion of Diversity….SMFH. They love Kylo so much then make Driver get his lazy ass out there and promote Star Wars half as much as Boyega does.
I actually saw some Reylo saying that Driver had the “same deal” as Harrison Ford re: promotion. I’m sorry, Harrison was on every ABC show except The Chew (which he should have been on) and every other talk show going not only for the movie but for the damn DVD release. “Same deal”? Not so much.
John Boyega has been to EVERYTHING, been charming and funny - and his reward is that poster? 2 seconds in the trailer?

Still not happy about Eli, this maxi series did not do one positive thing for the character at all. It would have been better if he did nothing which is pretty much what Hulking did. I think he was right too on repowering. U cannot simply randomly give mutants their powers back. First, Some might not want it back so its Wanda playing God again. Second, u got to figure lets say 100 out of ever Million are a cyclops random repowering causes widespread destruction.
