why did Lena even hire Gwen??
Lena seems to like Alice supposedly cause she (seemingly) doesn't care whatsoever about the horrific stuff going on, and likes her enough to pretty much ignore her and consider Sam based on Alice's recommendation. Even if Sam was just hired because they were scrambling for a replacement and needed someone traumatized by The Horrors, Lena likes Alice enough to not be immediately worried about the possibility that Sam may end up being Alice#2.
Sam, Alice, and Colin don't at all seem like they may one day want her position, and all are not particularly interested in challenging Lena (directly at least. Sam's snooping and Colin's IT rage aside).
Gwen on the other hand has so far presented herself as nothing but focused and uptight. She's always been gunning for the top and to have that respect. Why would Lena hire anyone that might threaten her position? Maybe Gwen just changed a lot (like people being surprised that Elias became head of the institute lol) and she just wasn't like that before.
Running theory though is nepotism (as per ep. 1) and Lena didn't have much of a choice. In which case, who has the connections to be overriding Lena, how does it connect to the horrible stuff going on, and why this job specifically? (I'm sure if Gwen has those sorts of connections she could get a more "respectable" job elsewhere) What stakes does Gwen (and supposed nepotism connection) have in all of this.
I guess we'll get some more insight on their dynamic when we find out what Gwen does with her young lena blackmail. Will be interesting to see if Gwen can actually force something from Lena using the video and/or potential connections

MAG 68 mentions documents leaked in 1999. Diff universe, but maybe relevant to the Magnus Institute's downfall in TMAGP?

Can people really quit the OIAR? Or do they "not last long" as in they die? Lena brutal pipe murder?
Maybe we hear him in the puters.
If you're curious about the lights, they're real optical phenomena in the group of halos (pretty straightforward name). Depicted here:
"sun dogs" (or "parhelions," to the sides here),
Parry arc (the top inner "horns"),
circumzenithal arc (top outer "horns"),
sun pillar (vertical lens flare on the light),
parhelic circle (horizontal curve),
upper tangent arc (outer ring),
and a plain ol halo (inner ring).

You cannot quit the Archives even if there's an apocalypse and you die and get exported to another universe. You still gotta read statements.

I like this interpretation! I'm thinking the Magnus Institute is not the problem. The problem is what left it - all those papers, gone.
Previously the statements were how the Eye fed, but the tape web of recorded statements was how the fears got exported to another world.
So if the statements escaped the Institute, maybe that's a Pandora's Box?
To be fair, Red canary also brought back a box 🧐
can't stop thinking about red canary.
Like it has to be a red herring+mine canary symbology combo. It's meant to send us on the wrong path. AND it's a serious warning. So the institute IS a genuine danger, but it's not the place to get answers? Do we interpret it as a message to the listeners or the characters?

LISTEN IM ONTO SOMETHING-
Windows NT Business released in 1993. I'm looking up the main differences between 95 and NT, and there's one thing that's specific that's caught my eye.
Windows NT wasn't technically succeeded by Windows 95. No, no, no. Windows 95 was meant for home use. Businesses used Windows NT for awhile after. Not until Windows 2000 which officially released February 2000 was Windows NT outclassed.
So let's say, hypothetically speaking, it's the late 90's and you're running a spooky Institute that still needs an operating system for its daily work. You would use Windows NT as your operating system. Your IT department is probably going to upgrade your systems in the year 2000, when the new release is out.
It's a shame though that, you know, The Magnus Institute burned down in 1999. I guess they never did upgrade past Windows NT.
TMAGP has me thinking about the sublime. The idea of beauty and terror sharing a space in your brain, and the exultation of artistry - a painter like Daria or the virtuoso with the demon violin - to the point of destruction. The joy and horror at seeing a loved one return from the dead. The excitement and fascination of becoming something not quite human, the distress and panic as your body is changed. The shiver of fear as a pleasurable sample of terror.
I wonder where they're going with this.
Sam's really out here, episode 4, already Magnusing the Protocols. Smh.
TMAGP 4 SPOILERS BELOW CUT
Sacrificing yourself, or part of yourself, has been a constant focus so far (nothing's wasted in the garden). A lot of people have commented on the "be careful what you wish for" narratives, and I'm on that page, but I think there's been self-harm in each story (implied in 1, regarding the eyes). People's passions consume them, and they're "giving in."
TMAGP 4 feels like the first story where someone channels that supernatural harm outwards as well (in 3, the murder precedes the supernatural encounter). In TMA the statements were often innocent people encountering terrible things, but the POVs are more complex this time around.
Considering the ambiguity of the system's morality, I feel like the macro POV (the devices we're listening from) will be equally ambiguous. I wonder if we'll get into the horrors' sentience (or lack of it) and how this weird abstract organism would, itself, would choose a moral path.
I don't care if it's canon
I'll get a cannon and then you'll make it canon

1994 was when the "incident" with Leitner books occurred, according to MAG 4. Perhaps there's a link to the fire that burned down the Magnus Institute in TMAGP?
I feel like the most consistent trait I see for Alice is mismatched fun socks and that resonates so truly, so deeply, I think Tumblr collectively reached into Jonny Sims' brain and plucked out an unconscious truth
