Hi! I wanted to let you guys know that I am going to be posting on tumblr a lot more! Despite having been on tumblr for, like, 3 years, I still haven’t learned everything about the site and especially not how to comport yourself when posting and not just viewing. I wanted to write this partially to update those who forgot who I am, and partially to jumpstart myself into actually posting. I hope to share a lot about the comic projects i’m working on, so stay tuned for that!

Since I'm w359posting this week apparently, I wanted to share something neat I learned from the AMAs about how the writers designed the characters.

Apparently, the original four crewmembers were plotted on two axes - human vs inhuman and order vs chaos. Eiffel and Minkowski were the chaos human and order human, and Hera and Hilbert were the chaos inhuman and order (metaphorical) inhuman. Lovelace upon her introduction was plotted at the dead center of both axes.

To really amp up everyone reflecting each other, when they started designing the SI5 characters, they took the original three humans' personalities and job titles and rotated them. So, they set up a commander, scientist, and technician, but gave the commander Hilbert's traits, the scientist Eiffel's traits, and the technician Minkowski's traits.

Obviously that was only a starting point, and all three characters grew into their own people very different from where they began. However, you can see traces of these influences. Least so with Jacobi, imo, but in the Rashomon episode where each person's account reflects their priorities and anxieties, he's striving to portray himself as a dedicated, safety-conscious professional frustrated that no one else takes his work seriously, which is something Minkowski can relate to. He's also Kepler's administrative officer, even if we don't see him doing paperwork very often.

Maxwell is clearer. She's the most friendly and social of her team and strikes up the closest connection with Hera. Also, as soon as she's gone, the rest of her team implodes, much as in "Pan Pan" the remaining crew is at each other's throats.

Finally, Kepler's alignment with Hilbert is obvious to me at least - they both are people with theoretically noble goals who are willing to do terrible things to achieve them, and Goddard takes advantage of that to get them to do terrible things full stop. Hilbert is just further along on the Goddard employee lifecycle of getting chewed up and discarded (he's had more of his legs eaten, to use the pig story's metaphor). They hate each other so much because they recognize each other.

... I am only thinking this now as I type it out, but I always wondered why Eiffel disliked Maxwell after only knowing her for a couple days, most of which he'd spent convalescing. I figured she was probably asking invasive questions about Hera, but if I'm suggesting Hilbert and Kepler hate each other because they recognize each other as card carrying members of the face-eating leopards party.... maybe Eiffel dislikes Maxwell because he sees something of himself in her.

So… I have a bit of an announcement to make. It’s hard for me to make and I don’t really know how to eloquently state it, so I just will.

In early July I was diagnosed with cancer, and a rare form of cancer too. Rare enough that the closest specialist is four hours away. Thankfully from what I’ve been told so far, my prospects look good, but we’ve been playing it by ear. However, the time between now and recovery may be long, painful and far too expensive.

 And that’s the difficult part for me to bring up. I was working on a tight budget even before my health became an issue, but it’s even more so now. With medical and school bills now on top of my already strict funds it feels like I’m drowning. I’ve been taking up more hours at work even though I should be on bed rest just to make ends meet, but this will only last so long.

With encouragement from a friend, I set up a donation page on my Ko-fi, now I won’t ask you to donate. But just reading this and possibly sharing this post will be more than enough help! I hope you all will be understanding as well if my content becomes less frequent because of this major life event and I appreciate your patience. However, if you do find that it is possible to help in these trying times, I am so grateful.

it will get better and easier. if ur a holiday oriented person and have the ability to do so, go HAM on the decor, or the food, or the presents, or whatever brings you happiness during these bleak ass times. even if it feels like ur faking it do it anyway.

if you happen to catch a sunny day, even if it's snowy af out, try to go out!! trudge thru the snow in ur chunky boots and take in those mfin rays!!

these are the hibernation hours. please remember to take it easy on yourself. ur not lazy, and that fatigue and emptiness will fade in time.

strange world (and farming)

So, this might be extremely obvious, but I'm not sure how much this is talked about outside the midwest so??

Strange World's environmental message is a direct reference to monocrop farming, the use of pesticides, and other farming practices that produce more crops but harm soil and the Earth.

The fact that the entire society relies almost entirely on one crop to sustain it? The fact that the second that crop becomes useless or harms the Earth to a degree we can't ignore anymore, our society is going to have to start anew? The fact that the people in charge actively ignore damage to the environment until their own lives are visibly at risk?

That's all us.

The director, Don Hall, is from Iowa and released an introduction before the movie to Iowa theaters where he talks about how much of Iowa is in the film, and how Searcher is a lot like his dad, an Iowa farmer.

Searcher is the protagonist. He's shown to be a likable guy. And yet, his farming practices are harming the Earth, he's not listening to his son about living harmoniously with nature, and he doesn't become a good guy (imo) until the end where he's destroyed everything he's worked for for the sake of the planet.

This movie is a fantasy but it's directly grounded in concrete parallels to our own world, and I love it

hey just an FYI, disney's new animated movie strange world, which they're saying has their first gay character, is not like, a joke. i just saw it and it's an ACTUAL first gay character. he's the protagonist. him being gay is not his entire character but it's also not like, a cameo, or a background thing, or one scene you can cut out. it's a multi-generational story about this kid and his father and grandpa, and him being gay comes up in adorable ways throughout the story (to the point where this movie is gay enough to immediately be banned in several countries). it's really well done and a very pleasant surprise from the mouse and people should go watch it!
