Maybe he HADN’T been sharing his bed then, and at Chuuya’s insistence that he get some sleep before their next big mission, he did that again and that’s why he looked better rested… aww Dazai sleeps better with Chuuya 💕 that’s really cute

I will!! I've been thinking about writing some extras once the main story concludes, which will cover side stories that didn't fit into the main storyline or that happen after. So far I have one that I know I want to write and if I can't fit the deleted scene, I'll either post it here or as an extra as well.

Also, aside from everything else Dazai had going on in his head, the fight with Chuuya was definitely an added factor to his lack on sleep. His pride also kept him from giving in and joining Chuuya on the bed, and when he would, it would be for as little time as possible. So when they "made up," that night he received the most sleep he'd had in days (which probably still wasn't enough under any sane person's standards lol).

Subconsciously, I'm sure he does sleep better with Chuuya next to him, though good luck getting him to realize that

I had a section of Dazai's pov that dove into that topic in one of my earlier drafts of chapter 14, so I wanted to reference it to answer your ask...but because I went through several drafts (it was actually the part of the chapter that took the longest to write), I couldn't find it for the life of me 😔

And then I did (stashed in a completely different writing software of all places!) but then I couldn't decide if I should just fully flesh out that deleted scene or just vaguely reference it later down the line.

But to answer your question: it happens the night Chuuya falls asleep on the deck at the end of chapter 5!

Since the fic is mainly through Chuuya's pov, he doesn't suspect a thing so there's no hints he picks up on during the timeskip that happens after. The only instance we can see that something is up is when Chuuya asks Dazai in chapter 8 where he's been sleeping: Dazai avoids answering because by that point he's been sleeping in the same bed as Chuuya and he doesn't want to admit to it.

The idea of pirate skk had actually been on my mind since late 2022-early 2023 (I know this because I have a note on my notes app dated 1/1/23 that says "Pirate AU: skk" and nothing else lol)

But it wasn't until October-November of 2023 that I really dove into it. I had just finished watching all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and OFMD, which is how I came to learn of "matelotage" which were same-sex unions that pirates often engaged in. That term combined with the fact that pirates are seen as symbols of freedom and rebellion got my gears turning.

I mean, gay pirates just made sense, you know?

Hi!! Great question!

The moment that really kicked off their romantic development was the wound stitching scene because it was the first time each of them saw a different side of the other. Chuuya got to see a physically vulnerable Dazai that puts the wellbeing of his crew over his own. Dazai learned of Chuuya's caring nature, that despite Dazai's treatment of him, he wanted to help. Given that this is a slow burn, they're both oblivious to the impact this interaction had on them deep down, but it planted the seed of possibility.

There are many moments that come after this, so you're most likely not reading too much into them!

Sorry to say that I currently don't have an uploading schedule 💔 I simply find gaps in my current schedule (when I'm not under a deadline or needed somewhere) and try to get as much work done with the story as I can. That's why most of my updates are posted around 3am lol

Although chapter 15 is about 60% complete, I haven't had time to work on it due to midterm season, but once it's over I'll have a bit more free time on my hands!

Just asking and I hope it's not rude (if it is just ignore it) but do you have any idea of how your posting schedule will look like now (as in will the next chapter be out in 1-2 months or 8)? Are you doing better?

Hi! I'm doing alright now, not 100%, but I'm definitely not going to be gone for that long again. Ideally I would like my schedule to be something like an update every 10-14 days, though it's hard to really set that in motion with everything I have going on. Once everything settles down around me, I'll work on being more consistent with the updates!

Well, I say "coming up" but we wont get to it for a few more chapters. It's a skk scene and I'm excited because we get a change in scenery and it's important for their development but ahh I can't give too much away...

Oh great question! I recently had this feeling when I went back to read the story up until this point (it had been a while since I had due to the hiatus) and I had a lot of "wow, how did I do that??" moments lol. I guess I can say chapter 7 gave me that feeling the most with Chuuya's internal dilemma, the action, and the reveal! I remember I spent a long time planning it out and circling through a bunch of drafts to get it right.

Oh! And I'm also proud of the fight skk had in chapter 10 and the buildup behind it because I remember sitting in front of my keyboard after that and going: okay now, how am I going to make them make up?? And then BAM, I figured it out!!

Sooo I was planning to have it out by the end of this week (!!) but then I got ambushed by exams and reports that have sadly taken my free time away for the millionth time. I should have some breathing room after this week (let’s commence a prayer circle 🕯️) so maybe sometime next week? I’m aiming for a weekend update at least (not this weekend though 😔).

Hello!! I have two questions about the story:

1) How big is Dazais ship and crew? I just can't imagine how big the ship would have to be for it to comfortably fit 40+ people (that estimated number comes from chapters 11-13)

2) In what part of the world does this story take place in (if there is a specific region)? I suppose they speak japanese in the story, which would mean somewhere around there?

Hi!! Happy to answer:

1.) The ship is on the larger side! I searched up a lot of ships while outlining the story but none of them fit the plot like I needed it to (yep, even the ship has lore!) until I eventually settled on a three-masted frigate. The crew is made up of about 50 members, which is a small number when compared to the size of the ship, a type which can hold crews about three-times the size. Btw I referenced this diagram (and then took a few creative liberties) with the structure of the boat:

For reference, here’s a few examples of frigates:

2.) The environmental setting is fictional with some real-world inspiration. They do speak Japanese but there’s also a monarchy which is loosely based on the English throne (hence the references to gold and red uniforms). But really, I won’t use any real-life names of countries or territories, every place they visit will only exist in their story so if you want to picture them in a specific region, go for it!

Are Dazai and Chuuya the same age? If I understand correctly Chuuya is 18 (he said that when he was 13 he got that scar in chapter 10 and that it had been 5 years since then so 13 + 5 = 18). It was said in the first chapter that Dazai couldn't be older than he is, so the logical conclusion would be that Dazai is 18 as well? Is it true?

Yes it is! They’re around the same age but Chuuya is slightly older (similar to canon). However, he’s closer to being 19 now and will probably reach that age by the time the story ends. I considered aging them up considering I added canonically younger characters but these ages made the most sense when I got to Chuuya’s backstory and when I found out that pirates were usually in their early to mid 20s. Poe, Ranpo, and Yosano are older than skk by two or three years and Aku and Atsu are younger by one.

I often wonder the same thing… though if you were to see me write it would just be 30% of the time spent staring blankly at my screen, 40% playing out the scene in my head and then immediately forgetting it, 20% filled with random writing bursts, and 10% spent pulling on my hair and wondering why in one hour I’ve only written three paragraphs…then deleting said paragraphs.

But I enjoy every second of it :)

I’m also so, so sorry this hiatus is dragging out this long… but the wait is almost over!! The update is over 10k so I’m finding myself rewriting and editing things I wrote weeks ago (hence why the word count just keeps growing lol) and it feels like I’m stuck in a never ending cycle but it’s coming together bit by bit.

what’s your writing process like? (how do you plan, do you outline, etc.)

Hi!! Great question! Okay, I have a lot of thoughts but I’ll try to keep this short and coherent lol

So I start off with a scene or dialogue and think to myself how did this character get here and why? Everything that comes to mind I type into a doc, even if it’s just a word or two. Then that evolves into writing down what I would like to see play out like character interactions, certain settings, themes I’d like to explore, conflicts, etc. Once I have enough information down, I start piecing together a story and outlining it with bullet points of major plot points. I also make a chart with character information (their personalities, backstory, connections, etc.) Only after this is set up can I finally begin to write. (The brainstorming doc can get messy and I constantly add more things to it).

Sometimes a bullet point from the main outline can span a few chapters, so I break it up into more detailed sections and assign a chapter to it. Whenever I sit down to write a new chapter I make sure that I have at least a general outline for it and rough estimate of the word count. The next step is what takes me the most time because I tend to overthink a lot and end up rewriting scenes or deleting them altogether. However, it’s also the step I enjoy the most because even adding a sentence means I’m pushing the story forward! This is when the chapter outline comes in handy because if I ever get stuck on a scene or piece of dialogue, I can just skip ahead and come back to it later. My first drafts are always full of notes I leave as I write for future me to use as a reference for an unfinished scene.

I’d like to add that I also like listening to ambience music while I work but I always end up zoning it out or shutting it off when I get in the zone lol

Then comes the editing which I also love doing because it means I’m in the home stretch! By this point, if the chapter doesn’t already have a title, I make it a goal to come up with one as I read through it (this can be inspired by a scene or theme but it has to be important to the chapter. Oh and I also like to sneak in double meanings for them). After this is done comes the tedious part of converting everything into the format Ao3 uses, but again, doing this means I’m almost done :D and all that’s left is to copy it into the Archive and type up an author’s note (which by then it could be anywhere between 1am-3am because nothing beats late night writing!!).

Hitting the “Post” button never fails to make me nervous but it’s a feeling I look forward to!
