so, what im hearing is: All the bi bitches are left handed, all the homo/hetero hoes are right handed. I fully support this.
okay so, i’m left handed and was thinking about how tom cruise is left handed and how it fits maverick so well and i started thinking about everyone else, so these are my headcanons:
- Mav: left handed, i can’t exactly describe why he is so left handed core but he just is, you know? he’s always complaining about smudging his writing and not being able to use scissors
- Ice: right handed, this man is the definition of a right handed person and he definitely has really good handwriting, and definitely prefers handwriting over typing on a computer
- Slider: left handed, now this one is a lil funky but hear me out, he was right handed but broke his wrist when he was a kid so he had to learn to write with his left and now he’s just used to it
- Hollywood: right handed, i really have no idea about this but he just doesn’t give lefty vibes, maybe because he’s just so normal man to me
- Wolf: ambidextrous, in my mind wolf and mav are the same guy in different fonts, very energetic and always itching to do something with their hands, he thinks it’s the coolest thing and tells every new person he meets
- Goose: right handed, once again a very normal dude, also i think mav and carole would both be lefties and goose would be the calm that balances them out, he tried to train himself to write with his left hand cuz he thought it was cooler, but it never worked

Tis my day of birth, so in honor of that, here are top gun characters and their birthdays.
Mav: Expects people to forget, but always ends up surrounded by all his family and friends. (The daggers especially love surprising him at work)
Ice: Often has to work through his birthday, so mav always wakes him up nicely ( if you know what i mean ;) ) and has a (takeout) fancy dinner prepared when he gets home.
Goose: fucking LOVES birthdays. absolutely has the biggest backyard barbecue every year, complete with a homeade cake that carole makes for him.

You know how ice has like, one of the the highest ranks you can get in the navy without being SECNAV by the events of TGM while maverick stayed a captain because he didn’t want to give up flying?
I bet ice felt the same in a way, but he was more attached to the plane he was flying rather than the concept of flying in general
I was doing some research and the last F-14 Tomcat was retired from service in 2006 from VF-213. Now this next bit doesn’t entirely comply with fact, but in the topgun universe VF-213 is Fist of the fleet, ice and sliders canon squadron. (In actual fact fist of the fleet is actually VF-25 but let’s ignore that)
So I hc that ice stayed at Commander (since captains oversee the general command of a ship instead of flying the missions) until the tomcat was retired, had one go on the new f/a-18 superhornet on a flight sim and upon deciding it wasn’t the same as the tomcat, he accepted a promotion to captain the same day. Also if we take into account that it usually takes 20-25 years for an officer to get promoted to captain and safely assume ice joined the navy somewhere around the late 70s early 80s, (flight school = 4years so pilots are immediately an Lt when they join the fleet and say it took ice somewhere between 3-4 years so get selected for topgun after that) it also fits the service timeline for getting promoted to captain.
And then after being promoted to captain, ice just gained promotion after promotion and ended up being promoted to COMPACFLT about 1-2 years before the events of TGM. (I hc ice was only on his first term during tgm and that since HE DOESNT DIE YALL, he would take office a second time to keep all maverick baby daggers out of trouble before becoming SECNAV after that.)

I love thinking about an AU where: Pete Mitchell is eight years old and used to being bounced around from foster home to orphanage to group home to foster home. An eight-year-old Pete who is scrappy and world-savvy and angry, just imagine a Maverick before he's Maverick — all that Maverick-ness balled up in this pint-sized Pillsbury biscuit can of whoop-ass. He runs the show wherever he goes with his loud mouth and sense of righteous fury.
But then there's this new boy at the group home, this chubby nine-year-old blond boy with broken glasses held together with duct-tape and a big sweater with patches that covers his hands and half his face. He doesn't talk and spends most of the day hiding in his bed or reading an old Chemistry textbook that he brought from wherever he came from. Pete doesn't get him, thinks he's weird and the fact that the boy always looks so scared makes his tummy feel squirmy.
So, he starts to sit next to Blondie, shares his food — basically the only thing of value he has, and starts talking, and talking, and talking and talking if only to fill up all the space that Blondie doesn't with his own words. Eventually, Blondie starts scooting closer to Pete, leans against him and starts to talk in a small whisper that only Pete can hear.
Blondie’s name is Tommy.
They grow up together in that group home, they bond to each other in a way they've never bonded to anyone else. They make plans to get out and join the Navy together one day, to fly; and they promise to never be apart or alone again.
Then Tommy gets adopted.
Pete cries; Tommy screams. They might be teenagers now but it takes three men to get them to pry their hands off of each other. Tommy gets carried down the hallway howling, hands outstretched, yelling louder than Pete’s ever heard him speak before. Suddenly, the world is meaner and colder than it has ever been before and all he has left of his Blondie is that same scuffed up Chemistry textbook and a pair of broken glasses.
Pete runs away that night, glasses in his pocket and that heavy book stuffed into his backpack, but he never finds Tommy again… he finds Nicky Bradshaw instead.
He starts to move on from the hope of ever seeing Tommy again… until Top Gun and Animal Night at the O Club, when Pete catches sight of the first boy he’s ever loved, hiding with shades on and a vodka glass in his hand, instead of a patchy sweater and a Chemistry textbook.
Pete’s still a pint-sized Pillsbury biscuit can of whoop-ass and the world has changed them both into new people…
But when Iceman comes at him with bravado and snapping teeth, stinking of the alcohol that used to scare him when he was Tommy, regaling Maverick with tales of a father who loved a bottle more than him…
Pete reaches up to slip a little boy’s pair of broken glasses onto the blond’s face with a gentle, “Hi, Blondie.”
And Iceman crumbles away, leaving a crying Tommy in his place.
“Pete.”
He still says it the same way, like he's saying home.

Also no knights were reincarnated.
