There's no way that s4 was planned in advance at all during the season 3 production because there is barely a thoroughline between s3 and s4 beyond the basics. And if they had actually planned it starting s3, they wouldn't have spent s3 affirming that Diego committed to Lila and wanted a family with her. They would've just skipped to Five being the "not the step dad but the dad who stepped up".

Perhaps. It definitely feels like they had no plans before going into S4. But knowing at the S3 premiere Steve told Ritu about the Five Lila thing, I'm not sure how long he had it planned or not.

I like to imagine this moment wasn't part of that, and more in the lane of "find something to hold onto" and it means Delores, rather than the two of them. But who even knows.
