It is the spring of the year 1894, and Sherlock Holmes has been dead for three years. Watson's Sketchbook returns with THE EMPTY HOUSE - part 1! Bonus points to whoever recognizes what classic of Victorian literature Holmes is quoting on the first page.

Watson is in mourning. Men did not wear as elaborate mourning as women in this era, but the extra wide hatband was one way to convey a deep personal loss. Who that loss is referring to is probably not something that Watson is entirely honest about, even to himself:

There's a theory from Madeleine B. Stern that Holmes's bookseller was a real life person named Alfred B. Clementson, and that he impersonates him in Empty House, so I nabbed that name.

Looks like these guys are okay, after all :)

I managed to decode the lower speech bubble, got most stumped on the first, and then realized I could and should wait for the expert fandom decoders to do it for me XD . Never has phonetic spelling been so unintelligible, nor fans so dedicated to decoding it anyways.

Zoing's speech

I would like to thank the wonderful folks in the girl genius server for joining me as soon as thenpage dropped last night for us all to collectively transcribe and decode Zoing's speech about what's going wrong on castle Wulfenbach. The best guess we settled on was:

"He came back! Gilgamesh go walk about and father came back! A scary clank lady want to fix a new body in a tank, making new brain to put brain in tank body in a big lab!"

"It’s gonna work and then she in command of the whole ship and empire and everything! It’s bad!"

Which sounds like Lucrezia is on board stealing herself a new organic body that can potentially go queen mode! Uh oh!

So who's stopping you? Nothing in the technical definition of salad specifies temp :D . I know of at least one unhinged American-stlye diner that refers to stir fry as "a hot salad."

A crime against culinary terminology? Yes. A loophole for food-based rules lawyering? ALSO yes!

I'd watch this sitcom

They meet at the Secretly Side-Characters Support Group, having all been referred to what they think is a Protagonist Party by well-meaning friends and acquaintances. Hilarity ensues.

A social gathering of dudes who all have serious Main Character Syndrome, but all are wildly different genres. One of them is the "people don't like me because I'm too smart" Misunderstood Genius who isn't actually particularly smart, just mean. Another one thinks he's wisecracking and clever by just talking like a character in a Marvel movie. Third one thinks he's subtly pulling off a mysterious Film Noir vibe by wearing a fedora and spending most of his time internally narrating, and silently staring at people. The fourth one is a deeply dramatic purple prose self-fashioned Byronic Hero who is unaware that he would be a mildly annoying minor antagonist in a Jane Austen novel at best. The fifth one has gotten his entire personality from shounen anime.

I GOT ONE! Third time's the charm :D . Seriously tho all of my friends and coworkers know of this quest, I'm gonna do so much bragging with zero context

📚Watson's Sketchbook PREORDER!📚

Hello! In response to ~unprecedented levels of demand~ for print versions of Watson's Sketchbook Volume 1, I'm doing another print run, and will be opening preorders here on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11, at 9:00am PST/12:00 noon EST/5:00pm GMT.

DETAILS:

-This run is much larger than the two previous ones, but still limited, so being prompt is a good idea. Last time it sold out in 2 minutes, I do not think that will happen this time, but...early bird, etc.

-They will take a bit longer to arrive than previous orders, but should arrive for everyone by the end of January 2025, print- and shipping-gods willing. Thanks in advance for your patience, as I'm working with a small press printer and a small local distributor.

-If your address changes before the book ships, you can always send a message to the shop to update it. In general, any messages or questions about shipping should be sent there rather than by reaching out to me on here.

Can confirm for Lake Michigan (though I always thought her a friend); two hours into a lovely day at the beach was when the coastguard showed up to save us.

Superior, though. Her our father always taught us to fear. It never stopped us swimming, but it kept us safe.
