Fourth of July is tomorrow, this is your yearly reminder to sacrifice part of the BBQ to George Washington, lest his marble image crumble and people start listening to his historical actions.

noun
1. a cardboard box tucked under your bed, filled with all the things you can’t let people know about. you aren’t lying or keeping a secret, no, you’re keeping yourself safe.
2. the overwhelming fear that pours onto you every time they walk into your room without knocking or use your laptop without asking, like the long hot showers you take just to be alone and cry.
3. the worry that maybe you will never be free to be who you are. that you may never come out and find a boyfriend or girlfriend, that you will never get surgery or hormones to ease the dysphoria that fills you like a river during a flood, that people will tell you to seek medical help when you say you don’t feel sexual or romantic attraction and that people will never accept your pronouns because ‘they singular isn’t proper English’ even though they have used singular they more time than they can count.

Reindeer herding is part of a long family tradition, passed down from generation to generation. “You always learn from older people, the reindeers themselves, the nature and by your own experience,” says 34-year-old Johan Oskal of Tromsø Arctic Reindeer (@tromsoarcticreindeer).
Johan and his family are part of the Sami people, an indigenous group that have lived in Arctic Europe since prehistoric times. Just like their ancestors, his family continues to herd thousands of reindeer every year, but they also host adventures in Norway, so people can experience what life is like for the reindeer and the Sami.
Johan’s favorite parts of his profession are the freedom of his days and working with nature. “I love to be out there with the reindeer, and when I see that the animals are good and safe, it warms my heart,” he says. “Come and visit my family, and we’ll tell you more.”
An ash I know there stands, Yggdrasill is its name, a tall tree, showered with shining loam. From there come the dews that drop in the valleys. It stands forever green over Urðr’s well.
