Reindeer herding is part of a long family tradition, passed down from generation to generation. “You always learn from older people, the reindeers themselves, the nature and by your own experience,” says 34-year-old Johan Oskal of Tromsø Arctic Reindeer (@tromsoarcticreindeer).
Johan and his family are part of the Sami people, an indigenous group that have lived in Arctic Europe since prehistoric times. Just like their ancestors, his family continues to herd thousands of reindeer every year, but they also host adventures in Norway, so people can experience what life is like for the reindeer and the Sami.
Johan’s favorite parts of his profession are the freedom of his days and working with nature. “I love to be out there with the reindeer, and when I see that the animals are good and safe, it warms my heart,” he says. “Come and visit my family, and we’ll tell you more.”
Fourth of July is tomorrow, this is your yearly reminder to sacrifice part of the BBQ to George Washington, lest his marble image crumble and people start listening to his historical actions.
there, I did it… a Gravity Falls cosplay
“dark bags under your eyes, you’ve been staying up late again. scared of the dark, of the monsters that lurk in the shadows. and, you’ve always been so afraid. haven’t you? because that’s what happens when you spend so long in the light. you learn that not everything glows with the light of a thousand suns and not every soul you meet along the way can hold a smile, some hold grudges and glares and some, hold fists like fists were created only for them. so, you stay near the faintest, dying light. content, but not living the way you want to, because you fear if you will ever find another shine again.”
