"Once upon a time... a little collector came to this planet accompanied by their family."

This is a very big project I have done with the idea of retelling what I understood to be The Collector's backstory in a way that required no words at all: only visuals. Undertale fans may also recognize the style homage here, as well as relevance in music choice.

Au where everyone in the membrane family firmly believes in the paranormal, but no one agrees on which specific cryptids are real.

And then Zim shows up, but no one agrees on just what Zim is or what to do.

Dib thinks that Zim is a alien invader that needs to be stopped at all costs because “weird alien technology and green skin”

Professor Membrane thinks Zim is some sort of robot, cyborg or government weapon because he’s SEEN the amount of advanced weapons in his backpack, plus he once saw Zim lift a car with little effort. The green skin is some government made material.

Gaz takes one look at Zim and assumes “vampire”, with extremely sharp teeth, hatred of sunlight and superhuman strength and agility. Zim’s “advanced technology” is just magic that looks like technology (like a spelldrive) and the green skin is a genuine skin condition that vampires can have.

All of them want Zim taken down, but none of them are willing to work together because of all of them disagreeing on what Zim actually is and just HOW he should be taken down.

But the thing is,

we as the viewer never see Zim.

We see parts of him, like his PAK and the weapons inside, or hints of his green skin or his true eyes glowing in the dark, with the rest of him hidden from view. He hear him a couple times as well. But we never see enough for us to come to the conclusion of what Zim is by ourselves.

The Membranes don’t completely prove anything either, as Zim always escapes before any of them can figure out what he is and what he wants.

We are also never shown Zim’s perspective or what his true motives are. We are only shown the perspectives of each Membrane, who all have different opinions on what they’re going up against with their own proof for their own case. So Zim’s actions and behaviours throughout the show just confuse us more as we, the viewers are left questioning which of the Membranes are right, or if they’re all wrong and Zim is something completely different.

The things learned about Zim can point in any direction as well. Water hurts him, but only like 50% of the time. Is it because he’s an alien with some inconsistent way of protecting himself against water, a robot that’s waterproofed in some areas but not others, a vampire that’s only hurt by holy water or is it because of some completely different reason? No one will ever know.

I want to see another irken break into Zim’s base to try and find Zim’s weaknesses and/or kill him and instead find a bunch of objects that slowly reveal Zim’s past and just get weirder and weirder. It all takes place before Zim’s trial as well so things like the fact he worked with and was responsible for the death of Tallest Miyuki are completely unknown. So this irken is slowly going insane from learning weird facts about Zim’s past that get more outlandish as time goes on.

So it basically goes like this:

First object: Documents from Zim’s military training showing that he was promoted all the way to the rank of invader extremely fast, mostly due to his proficiency with explosives, incendiary devices and large vehicles. “Yeah that makes sense.“

Second object: An old labcoat from when Zim was a scientist. “That checks out, Zim did work as a scientist before he joined the military, so it makes sense that he would keep something as a souvenir.”

Third object: A PAK technician license that reveals that Zim was at some point, a fully licensed PAK technician and is still legally allowed to tamper with PAKs. “Kind of strange that Zim of all people was able to become a PAK technician, even stranger that he quit and became a scientist, which is lower in rank than a PAK technician, but not the weirdest thing ever.“

Fourth object: A letter that reveals that Zim was in line for a promotion to head scientist, recommended by Tallest Miyuki herself, dated a couple days before Miyuki’s death. “Definitely raises some questions, like why Miyuki would ever personally recommend Zim for anything and why Zim would ever join the military if he was going to be promoted to a high ranking scientific position. Maybe there were no other options. Maybe he was just a really good scientist.”

Fifth object: Proof that not only did Zim work directly with Tallest Miyuki, but was actually personally tutored by her in various sciences, technically making him Tallest Miyuki’s secret third apprentice. “This fact hits you like a metal chair to the back. It explains some things, but it also reveals that MIYUKI HAD A SECRET THIRD APPRENTICE AND THAT APPRENTICE WAS ZIM. And it only gets more insanity inducing when you think about how Miyuki’s other two apprentices are THE CURRENT TALLEST.”

Please stop invalidating the concerns of people who have problems that you’re not experiencing. Instead, listen to them, and learn what you can do to help. 

i feel like a lot of the younger group of people on the internet especially those who became online in the age of tiktok is that no one is obligated to interact with you. the best advice i could give to teens on the internet is block everything you dont want to see, unfollow over anything you like. you do not have to interact with people you do not want to.

but please remember that this goes both ways, content creators can block you over anything too. it doesnt go that deep, if someone blocks you its probably not personal. if someone tags one of my posts as a fandom i dont want to interact with i will block them and thats fine, i dont hate everyone i block and you dont have to either. creating your online experience is the key to having a good time online

i don’t know who needs to hear this today but if you want a neutral character then make a legitimately neutral character.

no more chaotic neutral characters being like “yeah i know i’m chaotic neutral but i’m going to willing join an organization that doesn’t benefit me as much as i benefit them” they aren’t neutral. they’re good.

also no more “i’m a chaotic neutral so i’m going to cause death and destruction and ruin the lives of everyone” that’s evil, babes.

i mean truly neutral. truly “i’m doing this to serve me and the few people who have proven to stand by me. if you don’t do your part to help me and my cause, you aren’t someone i want in my life” neutral. truly “i don’t care what the higher ups said, killing this guy is what i set out to do and i’m going to so it” neutral. or even “my business hinges on this guy not talking shit so, despite what you or the law says, he’s not gonna be left in a state to talk shit” neutral.

this rant wasn’t prompted by anything but me seeing neutral characters not written or portrayed as truly neutral.

literary analysis is dead becuz u legit get people like “this character is a bad character because they made a decision or a mistake that resulted in a problem that must be repaired within the narrative” like yes Jennifer that’s called conflict and its integral to every story that exists ever.

I feel like with the new ~fandom drama~ or whatever going around, I should re-introduce my favorite theory of fandom, which I call the 1% Theory.

Basically, the 1% Theory dictates that in every fandom, on average, 1% of the fans will be a pure, unsalvageable tire fire. We’re talking the people who do physical harm over their fandom, who start riots, cannot be talked down. The sort of things public news stories are made of. We’re not talking necessarily bad fans here- we’re talking people who take this thing so seriously they are willing to start a goddamn fist fight over nothing. The worst of the worst.

The reason I bring this up is because the 1% Theory ties into an important visual of fandom knowledge- that bigger fandoms are always perceived as “worse”, and at a certain point, a fandom always gets big enough to “go bad”. Let me explain.

Say you have a small fandom, like 500 people- the 1% Theory says that out of those 500, only 5 of them will be absolute nutjobs. This is incredibly manageable- it’s five people. The fandom and world at large can easily shut them out, block them, ignore their ramblings. The fandom is a “nice place”.

Now say you have a medium sized fandom- say 100,000 people. Suddenly, the 1% Theory ups your level of calamity to a whopping 1000 people. That’s a lot. That’s a lot for anyone to manage. It is, by nature of fandom, impossible to “manage” because no one owns fan spaces. People start to get nervous. There’s still so much good, but oof, 1000 people.

Now say you have a truly massive fandom- I use Homestuck here because I know the figures. At it’s peak, Homestuck had approximately FIVE MILLION active fans around the globe.

By the 1% Theory, that’s 50,000 people. Fifty THOUSAND starting riots, blackmailing creators, contributing to the worst of the worst of things.

There’s a couple of important points to take away here, in my opinion.

1) The 1% will always be the loudest, because people are always looking for new drama to follow.

2) Ultimately, it is 1%. It is only 1%. I can’t promise the other 99% are perfect, loving angels, but the “terrible fandom” is still only 1% complete utter garbage.

3) No fandom should ever be judged by their 1%. Big fandoms always look worse, small fandoms always look better. It’s not a good metric.

So remember, if you’re ever feeling disheartened by your fandom’s activity- it’s just 1%, people. Do your part not to be a part of it.
