since you write for demon slayer i was wondering if you could write about the reader being tengen’s tsuguko and their mentor/mentee relationship (personally i think he’d be tough on them but care deep down. maybe touching on the entertainment district arc? thank you <3

summary. what is it like being tengen uzui's student?

trigger & content warnings. mild depictions of injury, limb loss, voluntarily consuming poison, etc.

tropes, pairings, fic length, & other notes. found family-ish, fluff, slight angst towards the end. tengen uzui (& his wives) x reader. 0.7k words. they/them pronouns for reader.

author's thoughts. i took this request and RAN with it, i love mentor/mentee requests for any fandom but especially for demon slayer.... the age was unspecified in this req, so i personally imaged tsuguko!reader being around tanjiro's age, however i left it pretty ambiguous so anyone can imagine it however they want. i also decided not to touch too deeply on the entertainment district arc, since this is only a headcanon post, but i'm totally cool with writing an actual fic about it! just shoot me another request if that's something you'd like to see <3

tengen is definitely a very tough mentor, and he doesn't get the opportunity to train many tsugukos because of this. he's hard on his students. he's a demanding mentor, though at the very least, he lays out his expectations clearly. he knows exactly what he wants he students to know.

the lower ranked demon slayers have favored hashira, ones they would prefer to train under if they were ever given the chance to. tengen is not really one of those favored potential mentors. preferred mentors would be people like kyojuro or mitsuri. that isn't to say any other hashira would be any less tough on their tsugukos than tengen is, but the sound hashira supposes those two come off as kinder than he does.

of course, it should be made very clear that he's hard on his students not because he gets some kind of sadistic pleasure out of watching them struggle, but because he wants them to survive.

his training is just downright difficult. it's all in the spirit of survival, though.

a tsuguko of his would have a lot of things expected of them.

his student is expected to build poison resistance by microdosing themselves day after day.

his student is expected to have a certain amount of stamina.

they're expected to be stealthy.

they're expected to be able to make split-second decisions.

simply put, it's... a lot.

generally, anyone who trains under him quits shortly after beginning, so they don't really get to know him. they don't get to understand why he does what he does. they miss the opportunity to really understand him. the one exception would be his current tsuguko, [name].

he cares very deeply for the one tsuguko that did stick around!

tbh, he's pretty open about that fact, especially when he's alone with them and his wives! he's not secretive about caring for them.

he expects them to prioritize their own life. it is something that other demon slayers might not agree with, something that others find "selfish" and "cruel."

tengen does not see it that way.

he's seen that self-sacrificial, "give everything up for the mission" ideology tear people apart. he's seen it tear his blood family apart. he'd be damned if he let it tear his chosen family apart.

"because you are very dear to me," he'd say, placing a firm hand on their head and ruffling their hair fondly, "i expect you to value your life above all others. the mission is not worth your life. you protect yourself, you protect others, and you get the hell out of there if you can't handle it. you come back to me, to us. you got that?"

i personally think he'd treat his tsuguko like his kid if they're sixteen or under. yeah, he's only in his early 20s. so what? that's his kid. if they're above that age, he treats them like a precious younger sibling. if they happen to be older than him? he does not care. that's still his younger sibling.

regardless of their age, his tsuguko is a part of his little family.

no demon will ever lay their hands on his family and get away with it. he will not allow it.

if they get injured on a mission and they're recovering at the butterfly estate, my man is at their bedside in an instant. he probably yells at them because how dare they worry him?? where did they get the audacity??? tengen eventually gets over it and admits that he's glad they're alright. his wives also come to visit them when they have the time!!

now, as for the entertainment district...

i think that mission would be very mentally taxing (and of course physically taxing, but let's focus more on the stress and panic for now).

seeing tengen lose his arm like that, thinking he was dead... god, it would terrify them. they have grown to see him as strong and infallible, so to see him so weak and broken would be genuinely horrifying.

they'd cry tbh

good luck to gyutaro, though. bro is at the mercy of their rage. having learned from tengen, i wholeheartedly believe that his tsuguko would be able to hold their own against the demon for at least a little bit. long enough for tengen to recover, long enough for everything to go according to plan.

but, of course... tengen does retire in the end.

the whole point of having a tsuguko is to have someone reliable to succeed their respective mentor, right?

tengen loves his tsuguko.

A response to the “Athena is a victim blamer and hates women” crowd

The idea that Athena punishes victims of rape is very popular in today’s culture because of how famous Ovid’s retelling of the Medusa myth has gotten. It hurts me that people think that Athena hates assault victims because of 1 (one) story written by a man who hated authority figures and wanted to slander the gods.

Before Ovid’s Metamorphoses (which is part of Roman mythology, not Greek mythology fyi), all of the mythology regarding Medusa said that she was born a monster. She wasn’t a beautiful woman who was assaulted and no one transformed her. She was a sister of Echidna, a monster born from a family of monsters. Ovid’s tale of Medusa is a fictional story that has no basis on greek culture and that he wrote to push a political narrative. If you want to learn how Athena acted in actual greek mythology, here are some stories for you:

- When Ajax The Lesser raped Cassandra at a temple of Athena, Athena punished him and the greeks who failed to chastise him by sending a storm that sank their fleet. Ajax was shipwrecked and drowned, while his people, the (historical) Opuntians, were told by Apollo that to appease the goddess they would have to send maidens to the Trojan land for the next 1000 years, when the maidens arrived there they became priestesses of Athena.

- In Hyginus’ Fabulae, when the princess Nyctimene was found crying in the woods because her own father had raped her, Athena transformed her into her sacred owl and appointed her as her animal companion.

- In Ovid’s Metamorphoses (I’m only using this as a source to show how selective people are), Coroneis, princess of Phokis, was chased down by Poseidon. She cried out to Athena and the goddess transformed her into a crow to save her from the rape.

- For Hera’s sake, Athena IS a victim of attempted rape. In mythology, Hephaestus tried to force himself on her and she fought him off. The myth explicitly says that she felt disgusted by this.

Besides Ovid’s Metamorphoses Book 4, in every other myth about Athena and rape she is completely against it, protects the woman in danger and punishes the rapist.

Also, let’s talk about how in ancient times the cult of Athena was a escapeway for women. “The cult of Athena provided women in ancient Greece not only with a purpose outside the home and childbearing but a significant role in the life of the city. In the Athenian culture, which regularly suppressed feminine energy, even while celebrating it through their patron deity, Athena’s cult was an opportunity for women to express themselves, be recognized, and contribute to the religious and cultural life of the city.” (World History Encyclopedia, Joshua J. Mark)

In the Parthenon, a famous temple of Athena, there was a statue of Pandora, the first of womankind, where she was honored. (Pausanias, Description of Greece 1. 24. 5)

It’s worth noting that 99% of the sources that we have about ancient greece were written by aristocratic men, we have little to no idea of how women viewed and worshipped the gods. To sum it up, before y’all call Athena an anti-feminist, a rape enabler, or a victim blamer PLEASE read actual mythology and put some respect on Athena Axiopoenus (the avenger against injustice)’s name <3

Gojo- This giant absolute menace of a man I swear to god, you don’t have to worry about him being supportive or anything like that, no. What you have to worry about is how over the top he goes. Man’s organizing parades, making banners, literally everything. It doesn’t matter how many times you beg him to stop because he’s embarrassing you, you’re his baby and he’ll be damned if he doesn’t show his unconditional support and love. He’s definitely telling everyone too, if you’re out that is, just won’t shut the hell up. Nanami cannot count the amount of times Gojo has gushed about you and how proud he is of you. Of course you’re dying of embarrassment in the corner, but he’s doing this all out of love for you.

Sukuna- He’s definitely a little confused. Not in a bad way or anything, he just doesn’t understand immediately. You’ll have to take the time to explain it to him but once he gets it he’ll be so supportive, but more subtle about it. He won’t be throwing over the top parades or anything like that, but he will 500% find a way to mention in it in all his conversations. Like he’ll be doing curse king shit or something and then one of his vassals will start talking about the most irrelevant topic in regards to your sexuality. But those that stop Sukuna from worming in how his precious child is queer and how amazing they are? Nope! He’ll talk about it for hours then make it seem like the vassal has committed some sort of deadly crime when they try to change the conversation back to the original topic. It’s even better if he finds out with reader who’s reincarnated into Yuji’s older sibling because they’re in their twenties and have been out for a couple of years now, so it’s not a big thing and probably comes up in casual conversation. Sukuna’s gonna rupture poor Yuji’s eardrum because he yelled so loud. He was utterly shocked, he was fine with your identity, but how could you not tell him?? And your poor brother is gonna have to deal with all of Sukuna’s tantrums about you not telling him whenever you walk into the room. Eventually he mellows out though, he’ll deal with your lie by omission once he has you in his grasp again.

Oberyn Martell + Ellaria Sand- Original bi disaster couple, no one can convince me otherwise. Anyways both are pretty chill with it, I mean they probably knew already, they’re very supportive of course! Your siblings, the sand snakes, are too. Dorne is a very free and modern country in terms of opinions, not to mention you’re a child of a prince so you enjoy a lot more freedom to express yourself than others. And if someone does have a problem with, they best keep it to themselves or else they’ll have a furious red viper and his equally enraged sand snakes after them.

Levi Ackerman- He’s quite mild about it, to be honest. He’s not unsupportive, just quite about it. Not out of shame but just that he’s generally closed-off. Also, he believes that you should be able to share your identity based on your own terms. He’s very happy that you felt comfortable enough to share it with him though. He definitely made you tea when you came out too. Of course if he hears anything about anyone having a problem with it, well let’s just say that you will be the least of their problems from then on.

Tengen + His Wives- They’re all so happy! Especially since you trusted them enough to tell them. Tengen definitely brags about his flamboyant kid and how spectacular they are. He buys you and himself a ton of pride shit, I don’t care that demon slayer takes place in the Taishou period, this man will make custom pride merch, just for you. Suma cries as per usual, I headcanon all of them as queer but Suma is canonically bi! So, I imagine her crying tears of happiness and joy that you’re like her in a way and that she understands. Makio is aggressively supportive, like shove it down your throat kind of supportive but supportive nonetheless. Hinatsuru is pretty calm about it, she just wants you to know that she loves you unconditionally.

Muzan- He’s kind of like Sukuna in a way, as in he’s confused. Unlike Sukuna he probably understands what it means he’s mostly confused on how he didn’t know immediately. He is supportive though! And if his confusion hurts you, he’ll immediately apologize. You’re his sweet child, no matter how old you really are, so he’ll support and love you regardless of anything. After he’s done apologizing and you forgive him, you can guilt him into doing pretty much anything for you, which you probably could do just with a hug and puppy dog eyes! If there’s one thing Muzan won’t tolerate, it’s people slighting you, so you can guarantee that you won’t be receiving anything less than the highest praises from everyone.

Light Yagami + Misa Amane- They’re both completely supportive of you, though they show it in different ways. Misa is over the top enthusiastic about it. She starts doing LGBTQ+ campaigns, wearing pride merch, signing brand deals promoting it, basically everything and anything she can to prove she is the greatest ally in the entire world, all for you. Light is subtler in his approach. He’s happy thar you’re happy and that’s pretty much it. He’ll do little things to support you, such as boycott homophobic brands and celebrities, wear small pride pins and all that. Either way, they both support you unconditionally. And if anyone says anything to you, you can bet their getting the most painful and humiliating death possible.

Erasermic- Oh! They’ve been expecting this forever! Aizawa has probably known since the start and subtlety let Hizashi in on it, who was extremely excited. They support you and make sure to reassure you about that every day. They’re like Light and Misa in the aspect that Aizawa is very calm regarding your identity while Hizashi supports you with over the top gestures. You know they love you though, and are grateful for them.
