“Two? Oh wow look at you go” Zelda said and giggled. It was good to know that he did have people that he loved. Because she was pretty biased when it came to love. Without Link in her life he didn’t know how much of Hyrule and Sallow she could take. She would have just shut down and walked around an emotionless robot her entire life. Link had been their saving grace time and time again. It felt like whatever life threw their way, they could handle it alongside their blonde hero.
“Oh hold on you need some salt” Trying to stand up, she let out a low whimper and sat down again. Even though she was slowly getting better and stronger, she could still have moments when her body just begged her to sit still or lay in bed. They really did miss going to work and they did miss being able to do all the things they used to do. But now it felt like their life was put on hold all because of the actions of one man.
Looking down on the floor, they cursed under their breath when they felt tears roll down their cheeks. It was just so unfair. And sometimes it became too much for Zelda to handle because this should have never happened.
Zelda's comment made Sam chuckle. He supposed it was a bit amusing to think of. If you would've told him ten years ago that he would have the pair of them in his life like that, he wouldn't have believed you. He was a lucky hobbit, no doubt about it.
“Right, I do-“ he started, yet broke off when he heard the sound they made. “Zelda.”
In a moment, Samwise had set down everything in his hands and was at their side. He wiped the residual moisture from his hands before taking each of her shoulders in his grasp. The look he gave her was one of deep understanding.
He reached and tore a paper towel off of the roll, quickly handing it to her. He used his other hand to lift her chin as a parent would their child. That's when the realization suddenly hit him, the understanding of exactly why he was so concerned for this woman. For some inexplicable reason, she had made her way into his heart like that. All he could do about it was try and make sure she was alright. He tried for a comforting smile, and hoped it worked. “Deep breaths, that's it. No need for tears now.”

Catra stared at Midna with no hint of friendliness in xir eyes, but after her explanation, xe decided it might be best to be a little less hostile.
“Oh,” xe said. “Well, okay. That makes sense I guess.”
Xe were silent for a moment before speaking again.
“I’m Catra. I only got here a couple of days ago,” xe said. “They all said I couldn’t leave, but… I had to try. I had to try to get back to her.”
Catra looked at her, watching for her reaction, and also not elaborating on who the “her” was that xe mentioned.
“What were you doing out in the woods anyways? Everyone in town says it’s dangerous. Not that I’m scared. I just know most people like to avoid dangerous things.”
Midna looked at xem, perplexed for a moment, and just where most people would have asked about the person xe was trying to return to, the redhead tilted her head to the side, “Catra? That's a strange name. You aren’t from this world then, are you?” There was a weird air to the woman. She spoke with a formality, yet her body and actions were relaxed-- bordering on overly so. She quickly followed up with a reassurance, not wanting to completely scare the stranger off. “I’m not either.”
She shrugged at the question, not knowing the answer for herself. Midna was a “night owl” as they called it around here. She felt more at home in the dark, though she wasn’t as homesick these days.
“I’ve faced much scarier things than live in this forest. I’m wary, of course. I’m not dumb enough to think myself invincible, but I enjoy exploring by the light of the moon,” a light smile tugged at her lips, and she pointed up at it. “Its pretty tonight, no?”

“I can talk about him for hours and never grow tired of it” Zelda smiled. “His name is Link and we are bound together in a way. We die in one timeline and come back in another but we always find each other. We never stay too far away from one another and that is the greatest comfort I have ever experienced. His duty was to keep me and my kingdom safe from evil. Along the way it just seems like we both fell madly in love. Took us a while to finally admit it out loud. From my part it was out of fear of being rejected”
“And when it comes to me. Well I used to be a princess but now I am a model. I am a huge animal lover and I also love long showers and walks in the woods. In a way it soothes me from the confusion of this town”

No matter how many strange things he had seen, the tales which some members of Sallow Hills had to offer still managed to leave Sam a bit taken aback. Right, so reincarnation was a thing. Mental note on that one.
“That really is a slow burning love story if I’ve ever heard one. I’m afraid you’ve got me beat,” he chuckled. He knew a thing or two about that sort of fear, so he could hardly hold it against her for waiting so long (not that Sam was the type of person to do such a thing). They certainly looked the part of a princess; they had the same kind air around them as the Lady Arwen did, though he wasn't completely sure if she was an actual princess or not. “Princess? Well that surely does fit you, doesn't it.”
He smiled, one kind yet tinged with a sadness, “Walks in the woods have always done me good, even before I came here. But I have heard some strange tales about the one surrounding town.” Sam didn’t remark on his own experience with the not-so-friendly forest he had been in before; he didn’t think there was a bouncy man in a funny coat living in this forest, either, so he left that out as well. “If I’m being honest, it gives me the creeps sometimes, but it offers some interesting flora to study, so I make trips to it anyway”

ZSASZ COULDN’T HELP BUT SNORT. ❝ multitasking. A girl after my own heart, though Liz always got on me about enjoying a snack on the job. ❞ The woman certainly had an air about her that told him she knew what she was doing. There were some in Sallow Hills it would be stupid to sell more than a hunting or pocket knife too, lest they hurt themselves more than anything else. But he could tell she was pretty knowledgeable in the way she held herself. It wasn’t a fake sorta confidence in what she was looking for, but something fairly genuine.
❝ SOMETIMES, THOUGH, ZONING IN ON JUST ONE THING IS FUN. when you just let yourself focus on the hunt and nothing else. When it takes over your entire mind. ❞ He pushed away from the counter, eyes racking over the knives in front of him. He slid down to a different case, this one mainly filled with machetes. However, tucked away in the back away from just a skimming eye, were a few short swords. He pulled them out, laying them on the top of the case, then pulled out a few of his heftier daggers.
❝ HERE’S WHAT I GOT IN STOCK RIGHT NOW. if none of them suit your fancy, let me know what you like and don’t like about each of them and i can see what i can order the next time i get inventory. ❞
You could never be too careful in unfamiliar places. A lesson Yennefer had learned all too well when she was much younger than she was today. Physical weapons had never been her preferred method of fighting, but one made sacrifices of aesthetics for safety.
When it takes over your entire mind. She nearly appreciated the sentiment, but the thought made her sick. She had done once. Her Chaos took over her mind as she became a conduit for it. It was a powerful move, but deadly, and it nearly took her. No, she was better off multitasking. “I suppose you’re right, but nothing is ever sure to work out the way you plan initially. You seem to be the type to understand that.”
Studying the cases with a keen eye, Yennefer carefully considered her options. She was no fighter, but she knew enough to get by. They seemed well crafted as they could be for this place, or she thought so anyway. “I’m sure one of these will work nicely, no need for special orders.” She paused, well manicured fingers ghosting over the hilts of the weapons, before they settled over a short sword, which she picked up to feel the balance of. Not completely liking the feel, she tried the next one over, which suited her hand much better. “This one is nice. What is it?”

“It is great to see you as well, Samwise” they said and smiled softly. It had been a slow process but it was one they were not finished with. It would take some time and they knew that. But it was only natural to have moments of frustration when things went on for a little too long and a little too slowly. All they wanted was for everything to get back to normal. But would things ever be like they once were? Zelda had just endured a life or death situation. They now had stories to tell that she didn’t want to even utter out loud. This would linger forever.
“Oh do come in. I could make us some lunch if you want to?” the brunette asked, tilting their head as they moved to the side so Sam could enter her and Link’s home.
To be able to hear Zelda’s voice was a comfort in and of itself. She was more important to him than most people in this place (even if he couldn’t pinpoint why that was).
“I could never turn down a meal when it's offered, but only if you’re up to it, mind you.” He was a Hobbit after all, and they had seemingly bottomless stomachs. It was a rare occasion for any one of them to turn down a good plate of food. Sam made his way inside, careful to keep his dish upright.
With a little gesture with it, he smiled at them. “Made the pair of you somethin if’n you don’t feel up to cooking. Do you want me to set it in the kitchen?” Sam had been there only once before, but he could find his way if needed.

REMUS REALIZED THAT UNLESS SAM HAD BEEN IN TOWN FOR A WHILE THINGS LIKE SCI-FI MIGHT NOT MAKE SENSE TO HIM. he hoped the sentiment at least got across, even if the exact words didn’t. It was an issue in many worlds - the Wizarding World included. Why were mermaids ‘humanoid’? Why were humans the centerfold? ❝ I can understand that. I feel like people get stuck in the idea that it’s fiction, so even if they were in the story it’d all work out. They don’t process that it can be far harder if it was reality. ❞
HE CHUCKLED AT SAM’S WORDS, NODDING ALONG. ❝ yeah, my father is - coping with my choices in life. Even if it’s not the path he’d hoped for myself. ❞ His father had meant well, he knew. Even if it had brought him pain and disappointment as well. ❝ Well you know the newspaper? I just make sure everything there is grammatically correct and technically smooth. I’ve been helping a couple reporters with their stories and making sure they get actually published. ❞
Everyone he met in Sallow Hills had their own specialty, and each in turn were fascinating to Sam. He hadn’t met anyone that worked at the town paper before now, but now that he looked Remus over, he could see how he was the sort to like writing. He very nearly reminded the Hobbit of Frodo with his curly hair and in his kindly-yet-hesitant demeanor.
“I do know the paper! Read every issue, in fact. Sounds fascinating, and I’m sure you’re right good at it. Doesn’t matter what your parents say, long as you’re happy,” he smiled. Sam was lucky, he had a good mum, and an amazing dad, but he wasn’t daft enough to think that was the case for everyone. “Well Remus, if that's all I can do for ye today, I hope those plants work out for ye, but you know where to find me if they don’t.”

OH . oh no . This wasn’t good . Sure , Bill didn’t know the extent of River’s relationship with the Doctor , but considering they were two thousand years old and only had two people’s pictures on their desk , Bill could easily figure that those two were important to them . Really important . And she didn’t remember them . She thought they’d only just met . Oh this was NOT good .
SHE SHOOK HER HEAD . ❝ sorry . maybe i’m confusing you with someone else . It’s just , you look a lot like someone the Doctor has a picture of , but with how weird this town is I could be wrong . ❞ She wasn’t . Especially since River had just confirmed that she was , well , River . ❝ Sorry , you’re probably here for something . The Doctor is out , but maybe I can help ya ? ❞
With a polite smile, River shrugged it off. A case of mistaken identity was no big deal, and that's what this had to be. There was no reason for the Doctor to be talking about her when she wasn’t around. Right? They had just met the other day.
“Not a problem, Bill. I suppose I do have a bit of a familiar face.” River glanced around the shop quickly, trying to identify something to buy to cover for the fact that the whole reason she had come in was to see a person that currently wasn’t here. A bit of disappointment rose in her chest at the lack of the Doctor’s presence, but she shoved it away quickly. Get over yourself, Song. River tucked some hair behind her ear and looked back to Bill. “No need to apologize. I am here for something, so help would be wonderful. This place is a bit of a maze, I’ve noticed.”
River gave a little laugh, and it became increasingly obvious why the Doctor would like her so much. It was a pretty sound that anyone would swear could brighten even the darkest of places. “The other day the Doctor said that there were supposed to be some new paintings and rugs coming in. Have those arrived by chance?”

His heart sank, his walls did as well. And that was the weirdest part of it all because they never fell. Not even around Louisa. No because around her those walls just went higher. But the purple eyed beauty in front of him made everything shatter and fall. How could this be happening? And why didn’t he know who she was when she clearly looked at him in such a way? Strangers did not look at each other like that. And that made him feel like the worst person on this planet. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt her. Why? He did not know. But he felt bound to her. Like it was his duty to keep her heart safe.
He should be asking the questions but instead all he could give was confused grunts and silence. He didn’t know what was going on and he didn’t know what criminal offense he had done to deserve such a bad case of karma. But whatever he had done in his past life must have been wretched. That was the only explaination as to why he felt so stuck between what was real and what was fake.
“I-” he whispered and then reached his hand out, palm up as a way to invite her to hold him. “I am so sorry” now Geralt was never one to apologize. He wasn’t proud by any means but he was stubborn. When he felt like he had done nothing wrong, he would stand behind that even if it meant he would lose people. But around her he felt the need. What was happening to her was unfair, she did not deserve it.
Whatever that may be.
For a brief moment, Yennefer wanted to scream at him, as if she would somehow knock his memory back into him by doing so. They had their fair share of shouting matches in the past– putting a hotheaded mage and a stubborn witcher in close proximity was bound to lead to such things. She knew this was different from all of those occasions, though, because at the end of those they would make up and move on, but this was… something else entirely.
He had amnesia once before. That had been difficult (it would have been easier if a certain red haired sorceress hadn’t gotten involved, but she mattered little now). Yennefer was not there for the bulk of the experience, which made the idea of dealing with it now– all on her own– all the more nauseating. Seeing him like this was undoubtedly strange. He was so… quiet. It was like a brick wall laid between them.
“Sorry,” Yennefer repeated. Her voice had gone quiet, level, trying to figure out what to do. She stared at the hand outstretched to her. Finally pulling her hand from her coat pocket, she flexed her fingers to dispel the remnants of Chaos; setting her jaw tight, she placed her hand atop his. The gesture was tense at first, as if she was reaching out to touch a hot stove, as if touching him could burn her. Her arm relaxed a bit a moment later. Her hands were clearly that of a mage, fingers long and delicate, a few calluses along the sides of them (something she paid close mind to, often using a carefully crafted hand cream which smelled of lilac and gooseberries).
Meeting his eyes at last, she sighed at the sight of him. No way forward was clear. She couldn't fix this. She hated not being able to fix things, especially when it came to Geralt. “Fuck,” she whispered, before speaking normally once again. “What am I going to do with you, Geralt of Rivia? What in the world am I supposed to do with you?” the woman cleared her throat. “You need something to call me by. Yennefer, that’s my name.”

REMUS’S MIND CAME TO A SCREECHING HALT AS HE PROCESSED THE MAN’S WORDS. hobbit. Hobbit! Oh he was a great big blubbering idiot. He was dumber than a flobberworm; how had he not seen this? Or even thought about it? When Stephanie Brown had explained the idea of multiple universes to him (not that it needed much explaining - he was a comic reader after all, and the idea wasn’t even a stretch for the wizarding world), why had he not wondered if characters he loved would be here. Like fucking Lord of the Rings characters.
❝ I SUPPOSE IT MUST GET ANNOYING WHEN PEOPLE JUST ASSUME YOU’RE HUMAN. ❞ i’m not human either, not fully. Not that Remus would say that out loud even to people who knew. Though that was probably because he knew the people who knew would hit him if they heard him say that. ❝ That’s really nice that you learned it all from your dad. My pa - well we have magic in common but that’s about it. My ma though. I was trying to go into the same field as her, nursing. She was an angel, I swear. ❞ He chuckled, shaking his head. ❝ Sorry, you didn’t ask for my life story. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I don’t believe I caught your name. I’m Remus. ❞
With a shrug, Sam scribbled down the things he had just sold on a list, and handed the man his receipt. “I don’t mind when people assume it, not anymore. It makes things a little easier most times.”
He missed his Old Gaffer often, especially when he was working. Being there reminded him of all those days spent gardening together. He was a good man, whom Samwise had learned a great deal of his life’s operations from (the rest being from Mr. Bilbo and his own experiences). “I love learning about people, especially when so many here are from strange lands, comparatively speaking. That's really lovely you’re following in her footsteps.” Holding out his hand to shake, a grin on his face, he continued, “Nice to meet you Remus. Sam Gamgee at your service.”
