ZSASZ COULDN’T HELP BUT SNORT.  ❝ multitasking.  A girl after my own heart, though Liz always got on me about enjoying a snack on the job. ❞  The woman certainly had an air about her that told him she knew what she was doing.  There were some in Sallow Hills it would be stupid to sell more than a hunting or pocket knife too, lest they hurt themselves more than anything else.  But he could tell she was pretty knowledgeable in the way she held herself.  It wasn’t a fake sorta confidence in what she was looking for, but something fairly genuine.

❝ SOMETIMES, THOUGH, ZONING IN ON JUST ONE THING IS FUN.  when you just let yourself focus on the hunt and nothing else.  When it takes over your entire mind. ❞  He pushed away from the counter, eyes racking over the knives in front of him.  He slid down to a different case, this one mainly filled with machetes.  However, tucked away in the back away from just a skimming eye, were a few short swords.  He pulled them out, laying them on the top of the case, then pulled out a few of his heftier daggers.

❝ HERE’S WHAT I GOT IN STOCK RIGHT NOW.  if none of them suit your fancy, let me know what you like and don’t like about each of them and i can see what i can order the next time i get inventory. ❞

You could never be too careful in unfamiliar places. A lesson Yennefer had learned all too well when she was much younger than she was today. Physical weapons had never been her preferred method of fighting, but one made sacrifices of aesthetics for safety.

When it takes over your entire mind. She nearly appreciated the sentiment, but the thought made her sick. She had done once. Her Chaos took over her mind as she became a conduit for it. It was a powerful move, but deadly, and it nearly took her. No, she was better off multitasking. “I suppose you’re right, but nothing is ever sure to work out the way you plan initially. You seem to be the type to understand that.”

Studying the cases with a keen eye, Yennefer carefully considered her options. She was no fighter, but she knew enough to get by. They seemed well crafted as they could be for this place, or she thought so anyway. “I’m sure one of these will work nicely, no need for special orders.” She paused, well manicured fingers ghosting over the hilts of the weapons, before they settled over a short sword, which she picked up to feel the balance of. Not completely liking the feel, she tried the next one over, which suited her hand much better. “This one is nice. What is it?”

Love came and went, friendships ended and life was spilled. Guts, gore, broken hearts. That was the life Geralt of Rivia was used to. But Geralt from Sallow was a different story. Here he was nothing more than a farmer. His long milk white hair and amber eyes was the two things that made him stand out from the rest. It was like he had a target on his back and the most frustrating part? He didn't even know why he looked this way. He also didn't know why the darkness felt like home and why his hand felt so empty. Was he used to holding a heavy object? And why? Why did it feel like he was an imposter walking around pretending to be an ordinary man when he was nothing of the sort?

His dreams only made his confusion ten times worse. Because every single night he heard the same voices, the same names and he saw the same movements. But he never saw their faces. Yet it felt like he was home for the first time in years. The happiest time he experienced was whenever he closed his eyes and fell into a fast and deep slumber. That was when his happiness washed over him. Relief was also an emotion that took over his senses whenever he heard those voices again.

A woman, a man and a young girl. Every time he asked for their names, he heard mumbles. And every single time he tried to reach out he was met with nothing. Now Geralt wasn't someone who liked to be this confused and left in the dark fumbling to find a light source. He wanted to just yell at the world for making him this vulnerable.

It made his love life worse as well. No one compared to the woman of his dreams. He tried with Louisa, he really did. But from the get go it felt like she was deceiving him. Used him. But what for? It actually hurt him to not feel appreciated or wanted. He wasn't someone who ran after people begging to be loved. He was usually content with being left alone in the cold.

He woke up from his thoughts when he felt someone collide with him. "Maybe you should be the one watching where you are going?" he suggested. But when he heard her voice, her sweet voice, his heart soared. It's her. The woman from his dreams. But how? About to ask who she was and how she knew his name, he felt his body tense up.

Letting out a low grunt, he placed his hands on her hips as a way to make some distance between them. "I do not know who you are. I apologize"

Hands flexed and clenched to fists, Yennefer pulled them back hard and fast, not for anger at him specifically, but for fear of having an outburst. Staggering backwards a step, she felt the Chaos sparking between her fingertips, it was a rushing flood through her veins. Tiny flecks of purple light flickered on her hands, which she quickly jammed into the pockets of her coat.

She, of course, had heard stories about what this town could do, but she had never considered what she would do if it affected her. At that moment she truly hated this place; a distaste was quickly morphing into loathing. It made a home in the back of her throat, making her feel sick. The choker round her neck felt like it was tightening with every second.

The next thought to cross her mind was Ciri. How would she take this? Likely, not well. Geralt meant as much to her as he did to Yennefer. How was she supposed to look her daughter in the eyes and say that he didn’t know who she was. The idea of it only made her feel worse.

“You mean… Please tell me you’re joking. Tell me you’re just mad at me and playing some stupid game, because I cant…”  violet eyes boring into him, she seemed desperate, and Yennefer was very rarely a desperate person “Geralt. Please.”

✧・゚ MERLIN  ft.  midna

┊   ┊   ┊   ┊   ┊

MERLIN WASN’T SURE IF HE SHOULD FEEL REASSURED OR WORRIED THAT SOMEONE ELSE BRUSHED OFF THE WARNINGS .  there were dangerous things in the forest , though he suspected most of those things were less dangerous than the town let on .  They were territorial , and honestly weren’t humans as well ?  ❝ It feels like a staple of humanity that they like to warn people away from everything , even if it’s not nearly as scary as they let on .  I’ve ran into a few nasty things in the forest , but not many .  Most things just like having their space . ❞

OF COURSE , HE WAS ALSO A CREATURE OF MAGICK , and that tended to ease some of the tensions between him and other creatures .  They were attracted to eir magick , and more likely to let em into their space .

❝ IT IS NICE TO THINK ALONE , if you have a lot on you remind .  Is home far away for you ?  Or nearby ? ❞  Ey supposed that was the easiest way to phrase it .  There were people from worlds so unlike this one here , and others like him who were a bit closer .

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Midna looked around the surrounding trees, not out of any anxiety, but simple awareness. Her eyes were best adjusted to the dark. She spotted birds in the trees, heard the sounds of creatures foraging and settling in their homes, and saw as the intermittent breeze blew about fallen leaves. To her, it was peaceful. She was glad that Merlin wasn’t disturbing the peace. “Fair enough I suppose. I understand wanting space, that's why I came out here after all.”

It took a moment for her to figure out an answer to eir question. It was a complicated one if she really thought about it. While she had been good with science classes with her tutors, she was far from an expert. “It's a little bit of both I think. It's far away, yet just under our nose all at once. To get straight to the point, my home is the realm of shadows. A parallel one to the world of light.”

To demonstrate, she moved her hand, and one of the shadows that previously was in the shape of the small bush casting it, turned into the shape of a big dog, then a bird, then the fox that they had both been looking at. She smiled faintly at the shapes before letting them seep back to their original form. Perks of being the Twilight’s ruler. Midna shook her head as she looked back to Merlin, “But I can’t seem to slip back into the world of shadows since I got here.” She smiled then, wanting to dispel the subtle wave of sadness. “What about you? Are you from this Earth or from someplace else?”

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Earth was a strange place. That was one thing Yennefer knew for sure. The planet did have its upsides, yet many of the downsides were… frustrating, to say the least. The largest of which arose from her employment situation. Yennefer had never been good with authority. Nobody got to have the satisfaction of telling her what to do. Even when she seemed to release control to someone else, it was a façade she had deceived them into believing. Her chronic insubordination was why she had gone freelance; she got to be her own boss, and answered to nobody save herself. Yet that wasn’t an option here. She couldn’t trade magical favours for some coin, meaning she had no income.

Doing the sensible thing, she got an actual job. She could handle customers just fine, and the little metaphysical shop suited her quite well, so it all ended up falling into place. It was easy enough, and she could card through some of the ancient looking books found there in her down time. She was sitting near the register doing just that when she heard the door. By the time she had gotten to the front, the person seemed already intrigued by something. Yennefer gave her very best customer service smile, “Can I help you find something?”

✧・゚   ┊   ┊   ┊  DEAN && YENNEFER

┊   ┊   ┊   ┊   ┊

DEAN WAS PROUD OF HIS OWN WAND.  he’d spent weeks working on the carvings, perhaps even more time scouring ollivander’s resources for the perfect core that called to him and the wood that felt best in his skin.  It’d been the first wand he’d been allowed to make on his own, Ollivander claiming that once you’d made one for yourself, every other wand would be easier as it was just seeing which woods and cores felt like they matched.  ❝ Thank you.  I had my first wand taken from me during the war, and I had stolen a back-up but those never work the same.  I was a wandmaker’s apprentice after the war, so I got to make it myself. ❞  It was one of the few things after the war that he was proud of.

HE TOOK HIS WAND BACK, CAREFULLY SLIPPING IT INTO THE HARNESS HE HAD AT HIS SIDE.  he liked that he could have it more exposed in sallow hills, tucked carefully at his hip where he could reach it at convenience.  ❝ I suspect that there’s similar magic in my home, though wizards just aren’t tuned into it.  There’s loads of other magical beings who can do a bunch of stuff we can’t, and it’s probably tied to a magic we can’t control.  If you’re interested in that kinda stuff, one of my old professors would be the guy to talk to.  I mean, it’s kinda complicated cuz he’s not old here, but Remus Lupin.  He’s the guy to talk to. ❞

IT WAS INTERESTING.  it wasn’t something dean would want to dedicate a lot of time to studying, but it was interesting how different magic was from person to person.  He wondered even in his own world if magic felt different between people.  He’d have to ask Harry and Seamus.

Yennefer knew war. She had been in several over the years, and had recently... well... she didn’t want to think about that. They had all come out of it alive, and that's what mattered. Either way, she had some concept of what the boy had been through, even if she wasn’t familiar with the war of his world. “Your time and dedication shows. You’ve impressed me, wandmaker, not an easy thing to do.”

Where she came from, magic was a force to be harnessed; the one casting could attempt to do such a thing in whatever manner suited them best. It could do nearly anything, for a price. Everything had its price.

“Well, if I ever need to discuss the magic of an adjacent sphere with someone, I’ll be sure to give him a call,” she said, knowing that there was little motivation for her to do such a thing. After a brief pause, Yennefer asked what she almost didn't, “You don’t make them anymore? The wands.”

━━━━━━━━━    *•̩̩͙ ♔ •̩̩͙* ━━━━━━━━━

She didn’t understand this land, not at all. Monsters and elves were far easier to understand than things like cars and headphones. What she did understand was the way her mother’s hand felt in hers,  how things would eventually be alright. Yennefer would die than let anything hurt Ciri. The blonde knew this like she knew her own heartbeat. A comforting, ever-there weight.

“You sound too much like Uncle Vesemir. You might just summon him with those words,” She smiled. Zireael had been a comfort she clung to her first few nights in this town, quite literally. It was proof that everything had happened, that she still had her family, somewhere out there. In a strange world with things she didn’t understand, the sword she knew as an extension of her own body was her solace. “Not a Witcher yet. Never, if Father gets his way.”

Ciri nodded, listening intently. Five months. Yennefer had been without her and Geralt for five whole months. “I’m surprised you haven’t burned the place down. I never thought you would ever work for anyone, the Council included.”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Everything about this town left Yennefer cold, the kind of chill that sank into her bones and stayed there despite any effort to chase it away. Holding onto Ciri was the first touch of warmth she had felt in months. She would do anything imaginable to keep that warmth from slipping from her grasp.

“Could you imagine? I think the sight of a lightbulb would be far too much for him to process,” the idea of the grumpy witcher trying to navigate technology was extraordinarily amusing. “You’ll get there in time, daughter. He just wants to make sure you’re safe, it's a dangerous job after all. Takes years of training. To be without you is a fate unimaginable to either of us. But your work will pay off, I know it will.”

She did know. The Ciri of her time was a bit farther down The Path, and was shaping up to be quite the formidable opponent. From what she could discern, there was no Path to be found here, but she wouldn't be the one to tell Ciri not to practice. They neared the bed and breakfast before long, having been close to it to begin with. “Ah, yes. I had given up on employment in my late thirties, but one must make sacrifices when trying to get the things they want, my dear.”
