Writing down the number into his phone as a new contact, he smiled to himself. Yeah sure he did feel rather stupid asking for her number like that. But it was the only way he could remember her. Because her voice was the most sweetest of sounds and it always made him feel so at peace whenever he had his dreams. And now that he had heard her speak in real life.. yeah he was done for. No one had ever made him feel like this before. No other woman or man. And that was a sign, right?

Looking up just in time to see the sun lower into the horizon, he almost forgot how to breathe. Because the sight before him was more beautiful than any work of art. Her eyes, her hair, her face and her entire being was just so gorgeous. It would bring anyone to their knees, that’s for sure. Maybe she already knew that.

Taking the picture, he then cleared his throat. “Giving people your number or kissing them?” Geralt asked.

One of these days, Yennefer told herself, I’ll learn not to run from my problems. It was all she had ever known to do. The problems of others were easy; the mage had no problems taking a side for the purpose of money or promises. Her own were different.

Amused, she gave a little shake of her head, “Not the kissing. That's commonplace.” A part of her knew that comment would likely spark a bit of jealousy in him. Another part of her liked that. “But I don’t give my number. Or make a fool of myself by crying in the street. Or any of this. I just keep walking.”

Yennefer didn’t know if she actually wanted him to call or not, and even if he did, she didn’t know if she had it in her to answer.

ZSASZ PULLED ANOTHER GUMMY BEAR FROM HIS BAG, only for it to disappear from his hands.  He knew he’d been holding it and it wasn’t like it’d fallen.  He had a better grip on things than that.  No - the bear appeared in her hands.  Without crossing the room, without breaking a sweat, she’d managed to take what was his.  It was fascinating, though it unsettled him in part too.  Would she try to steal from him? It would be a frightfully dumb move if she did, as magic or not he would hunt her down.  Kai would hunt her down as well, and he was actually magic.  A quick glance over at the dragon told Zsasz that he was eyeing them both, though he stayed curled up as though it wasn’t a big deal.  He’d learned from his father well, after all.

HE WAS MORE CURIOUS THAN WORRIED, THOUGH.  he ran with people who could take him apart if they tried, but they never did because he often showed them interest and people tended to like that.  They liked being the center of attention, whether that attention be loud or quiet.  He couldn’t help but laugh at her statement.  ❝ I like you.  You’re right about politicians.  They’re all corrupt and easy to  mold.  You just gotta figure out what they want. ❞

HIS GRIN HAD ALWAYS BEEN SHARK-LIKE.  it’s the word yules used for it, and he felt like it fit well.  Zsasz the Shark.  He gave that grin now, all teeth and cold eyes.  ❝ I take it it doesn’t worry you if I am.  Most people would be slowly backing towards the door.  Or pulling a weapon on me. ❞  He crossed his legs, leaning back against the wall behind him.  ❝ I am, though not to everyone.  Villain seems like such a black and white kinda word.  I go against general society’s morals, for the most part, but I protect people too. ❞  Falcone, Oswald, his Zsaszettes.

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Yennefer gave a modest smile and a little shrug that said she knew as much about each of his statements already. She could be quite likable when she wanted to be (which wasn't all that often), and she knew exactly what made a king or a duke or any of those others tick. A large majority of the time all she had to do was primp their ego a little and bring up whatever woman they had inappropriately frolicked with, and she would be set. “I know I’m right. It was my job for a few years. It's quite easy to make them all think what I want is what they want, but I got bored of such drivel after a while.”

Looking him over, she shook her head while exhaling a laugh. Despite the intensity to his smile, his gaze, it was nothing she could be afraid of. She had battled alongside witchers on any number of different potions which left their eyes and faces haunting or sickening or otherwise intimidating to gaze upon.

“No, it doesn’t worry me. It may come as a surprise, but I haven't felt intimidated at all in this shop of yours. Quite the opposite, actually. Strangely, it reminds me of a place I’d find back home.” Yennefer made no movements, save to shift the weight on her feet and idly fiddle with the charm on her choker to ensure the clasp was still in the back. “Despite the colour scheme of my wardrobe, my thoughts are not black and white. I understand what you mean. I think I’ve been cast as a villain in peoples’ eyes more than once, and maybe I would be more permanently labeled that if it were not for the people I remain close to.” Yennefer was quite sure that she would be a vastly different person if not for Geralt’s presence in her life, and Ciri went to further mellow out the cruelty that used to run in her veins.

“I think we have much more in common than I initially thought, you and I,” she remarked after a pause. She extended a hand in the space between them. “Yennefer of Vengerberg-- or Wilczynski, as I’m known here.”

He listened intently to each and every word, letting them hang in the small space between them. Time and space ceased to exist and for once he did not care. He was content in this little world of their. He was far away from all the hurt and from all his fears. He was safe here, happy here, warm and maybe even loved here. He could feel the words sink into his skin, burn like the summer rays.

This was not fair. It wasn’t right to finally find someone who gave him the sensations he had been yearning for. Every single face he looked at, every body he had touched during his years here in Sallow. None of them made him feel like she did. Just one glance and he felt whole again. It made it hard to breathe almost because every single gasp for air made his lungs heavier. And now that she touched him, his soul almost left his body all together.

Please remember. Please just remember, you fucker.

Geralt’s eyes closed at the kiss. It was like his body almost betrayed him because when she turned, he felt his hand reach out. Finding a home on her arm, he didn’t do anything to turn her back around. He did not have the right to dictate if she wanted to face him or not. That was her’s and only her’s. “I truly am sorry” the former Witcher whispered. “I want to remember. I want to look at you and not feel confusion”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Anything Yennefer could do or say would be unfair to him. He didn’t know better, and none of it was his fault, yet her chest ached and eyes stung. She tried and tried and tried to keep it together, but failed miserably the second she felt his hand settle on her arm. By the time she turned toward him once more, tears had silently slipped down her cheeks.

The only person who could ever break Yennefer of Vengerberg was Geralt of Rivia.

“And I want the same,” her voice remained level, if not a little strained. “Because you mean very much to me. Very much indeed. And the thought of you walking around here like some stranger is... I cant, Geralt. I cant do that. I look at you and all I want to do is-” She stopped, not for herself, but for him. He didn't need to hear this.

Wiping her face with the back of the wrist on her free arm, Yennefer steadied herself. Her mascara probably smudged, but she barely found it in herself to care for once. Appearance had already been spoiled, after all. Clearing her mind, tucking her heart back in its gilded cage, drying her eyes, and squaring her shoulders, she looked at him properly once more. Façade back up. “I’m sorry you had to see me like that.”

━━━━━━━━━    ☽ ⚜ ☾    ━━━━━━━━━

The shove was expected. A little bit of a lighter retaliation than Link had expected, but it had been seven years for Midna. Link was struck by emotion, something that rolled uncomfortably in the pit of his stomach. Link playfully knocked into her shoulder, burying the emotion deep.

‘You saw us interact maybe four times. Including the possession.’ Yet another thing he didn’t like talking about. Something that still gave Link nightmares, despite having years full of even more horrific experiences. ‘You couldn’t have seen it that quickly.’

‘Lifetimes. I’ve been reborn at least three times since you left.’ Most likely four or five, but Midna didn’t need to know that confusion. Everything was- mostly- there. ‘Ten thousand years. It’s not that much, compared to the rest.’

There came that emotion, rising up again. Link pushed it back down.

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Midna was still smiling when Link returned the shove. It was enough to make her have to regain balance, but far from anything that would actually make her stumble. She shrugged, nonchalant, as he signed. She didn’t need time to see what was between Link and Zelda. For her, who had grown to know every aspect of her adventuring partner along their quest, all she needed to see was his body language to know that he had it bad for the princess of light.

“I saw what I saw. I'm good at that kind of thing,” she made a gesture with one of her hands to emphasize just how obvious this was. ”And I was right, soooo…”

Her jest was cut short by his next revelation. Midna’s face fell into something nearly unreadable as she attempted to process it. ‘lifetimes.’ ‘at least.’ ‘ten thousand years.’ That wasn’t possible. People didn’t just get reborn as the same person they were before (was he still the same?). People couldn’t cheat death like that. There was no way for anybody to– oh. Oh but there was. “You– it's them isn't it? Its those stupid, wretched goddesses. Isn't it? Is that whose fucking with you? Those entitled, irreverent, disgusting excuses for-” Midna growled in frustration. She was never one to think of the goddesses of Hyrule in a respectful light. They were the ones who banished her ancestors to the Twilight after all. But this was something bigger than that. She met his eyes again, attempting to push down her anger to the goddesses, yet when her own anger was moved, the anger she felt on his behalf came up in its place. “Link I’m so… Are you, well, are you okay?”

It was probably a dumb question. How could someone be okay when they were thousands of years old? Midna reached out and gently cupped his cheek, as if steadying his face would help her get a better read on him. It didn’t do much to help. There wasn’t anything else she could think to say, so she pulled him into another tight hug.

“I’m so sorry.”

SHE WAS A CHESS PLAYER THEN, OR WHATEVER THEY LIKED TO THINK OF THEMSELVES.  someone like falcone or oswald, who knew how to play everyone in power.  Zsasz had never taken an interest in that part of the business - better to let those who did it better than him take charge of that.  But he admired the hell out of it.  He wouldn’t have been so loyal to the people he had been if he didn’t admire it.  ❝ I can see how it’d get boring. It was never my forte.  I’d much rather scare people into what I need than play with all the pieces.  That’s for my bosses to deal with. ❞

HE WAS A SIMPLE GUY AT THE END OF IT.  sure, he could push to be more, but he didn’t want to.  He wanted to kill and scare people, then go home to have dinner with Oswald or his family.  He didn’t need to be the most powerful man in the room - that just meant more people would try to kill him.

HE GRINNED AT HER COMPLIMENT, eyes casting around the shop he’d grown to be proud of.  ❝ Glad that you find it comforting.  I’ve worked hard on it - well since I took it over. ❞  Some change in merchandising, getting rid of the taxidermy (though he’d kept a pair of antlers, and spray painted them silver).  The sleeker wood flooring and glass cases.

HE TOOK HER HAND, SHAKING IT.  ❝ victor zsasz, though only a handful of people are allowed to call me victor. ❞  Oswald, Falcone, the Zsaszettes.  ❝ It’s nice to meet someone of a like mind to me.  I was worried this town was only going to be filled with good-doers.  It gets quite boring that way. ❞

By the gods, she had hated her old jobs. They were born out of necessity, as its simply what most mages did. When she realized the freedom she could have if she left, Yennefer had immediately taken it. Ever since then, she had worked for herself. She understood his methods; they were similar to her own and many of the other sorceresses she knew.

Yennefer took another quick look around the shop as well, smiling at him as she shook his hand. “Well, your hard work shows, Victor Zsasz, or whatever it is you would like me to call you. And I mean that sincerely. Its nice to meet you.”  When she retracted her hand, she moved to undo the belt keeping her coat together. The shop had finally warmed her up well enough that she was beginning to feel hot. The glimpse of her clothing beneath reflected the person that he had been speaking to perfectly: high quality, tailored, classical fashion with a hint of something otherworldly.

“I agree with you there. Some of these people are painful to be around. Makes my head ache just thinking about it,” she rolled her eyes, honest yet playful, “I don’t think anything can be very fun when its black and white. The good drama comes from the outside and in-between.”

Yennefer was all for a good show-- the thrill of the chase, the adrenaline rush of a fight, the forged and broken bonds between it all. As long as Ciri was safe, she didn’t have any problem watching trouble get cooked up. Not any problem at all.

When the cold was too biting, The Doctor was glad to have the antique shop to keep them at least somewhat occupied. It didn’t always work, their mind racing a mile a minute and the world around them moving painfully slow for a being who was used to being able to travel time at their whim. The weekends were normally better, a regular flow of people in and out of the shop to keep it from being entirely dull.

They were hanging a newly restored piece on the wall when they heard the bells jingling near the front. Never one to hurry when they weren’t of a mind to, they made sure it was placed just so before making their way to see their visitor. Stopping dead in their tracks, they had to tamp down the greeting that rose up in them. It felt like it had on that damnable Christmas, being looked at and looked right through.

“Hello,” sweetie, they forced to stay silent, dropping a few of the extra lenses down onto their jeweler’s spectacles as though it could help them understand. Or add a buffer. Either way. Their brogue had gone soft and they knew that Bill would have been staring at them. “How can I help you today?”

When River was faced with the attendant, something in her chest tightened. She didn’t understand the feelings that were quickly bubbling up in her. She looked at this stranger, knowing she hadn't met them before, yet she felt like she had known them her whole life. The look in their eyes made her nearly forget why she was there. What the hell was that all about!?

“I, erm,” she took a break, shaking her head in hopes of dispelling the weirdness she felt. “Sorry, long day at work. I just moved into town recently, and my flat is absolutely bare. I was looking to get a few things to make it a bit more home-like. A few lamps, carpets, decorations, a side table, that sort of thing.”

River drummed her fingers against the side of her leg, and then looked as though she was completely scandalized for a moment. She took a few steps forward and held out her hand, “I’m River, by the way. It's nice to meet you.”

“Two? Oh wow look at you go” Zelda said and giggled. It was good to know that he did have people that he loved. Because she was pretty biased when it came to love. Without Link in her life he didn’t know how much of Hyrule and Sallow she could take. She would have just shut down and walked around an emotionless robot her entire life. Link had been their saving grace time and time again. It felt like whatever life threw their way, they could handle it alongside their blonde hero.

“Oh hold on you need some salt” Trying to stand up, she let out a low whimper and sat down again. Even though she was slowly getting better and stronger, she could still have moments when her body just begged her to sit still or lay in bed. They really did miss going to work and they did miss being able to do all the things they used to do. But now it felt like their life was put on hold all because of the actions of one man.

Looking down on the floor, they cursed under their breath when they felt tears roll down their cheeks. It was just so unfair. And sometimes it became too much for Zelda to handle because this should have never happened.

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Zelda's comment made Sam chuckle. He supposed it was a bit amusing to think of. If you would've told him ten years ago that he would have the pair of them in his life like that, he wouldn't have believed you. He was a lucky hobbit, no doubt about it.

“Right, I do-“ he started, yet broke off when he heard the sound they made. “Zelda.”

In a moment, Samwise had set down everything in his hands and was at their side. He wiped the residual moisture from his hands before taking each of her shoulders in his grasp. The look he gave her was one of deep understanding.

He reached and tore a paper towel off of the roll, quickly handing it to her.  He used his other hand to lift her chin as a parent would their child. That's when the realization suddenly hit him, the understanding of exactly why he was so concerned for this woman. For some inexplicable reason, she had made her way into his heart like that. All he could do about it was try and make sure she was alright. He tried for a comforting smile, and hoped it worked.  “Deep breaths, that's it. No need for tears now.”

Earth was a strange place. That was one thing Yennefer knew for sure. The planet did have its upsides, yet many of the downsides were… frustrating, to say the least. The largest of which arose from her employment situation. Yennefer had never been good with authority. Nobody got to have the satisfaction of telling her what to do. Even when she seemed to release control to someone else, it was a façade she had deceived them into believing. Her chronic insubordination was why she had gone freelance; she got to be her own boss, and answered to nobody save herself. Yet that wasn’t an option here. She couldn’t trade magical favours for some coin, meaning she had no income.

Doing the sensible thing, she got an actual job. She could handle customers just fine, and the little metaphysical shop suited her quite well, so it all ended up falling into place. It was easy enough, and she could card through some of the ancient looking books found there in her down time. She was sitting near the register doing just that when she heard the door. By the time she had gotten to the front, the person seemed already intrigued by something. Yennefer gave her very best customer service smile, “Can I help you find something?”

Watching the people in a bar told you a lot about them. Sirius certainly was not nosy, but he liked to converse, and people tended to get chattier the more drinks they had. So he had already heard plenty of stories in his time at the White Rabbit. Which was nice; he liked that people felt they could talk to him, just like he had always been able to talk to his friends. That had helped him a lot, so if he could help others by letting them unload their burdens, he was more than fine with that.

The guy who had just sat down seemed like he had had a day. Even his smile was tired. “Evening. Hope you don’t mind me saying, but you look like you could use a pick-me-up,” Sirius said, leaning his elbow on the bar. “Rough day?”

Differences of people between Earth and Middle Earth were numerous, and sometimes they disturbed Sam greatly. There were a few things which remained the same, though. People could be kind, or they could be rude. Life could be exciting, or it could be exceedingly boring. You go to work, then you went home, and you repeated the motions over and over. One thing Sam was still glad to see was that pubs still filled up when the work day let out.

It was what brought him there, after all, the small part of him that was still holding on to that routine. “I could. Its been a bit of a “day from hell” as people round these parts say. Owning a business can be fun, ‘cept the days when its not.”

Dorcas listened with rapt interest. She knew all about the Shire from reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but this was different, hearing about it from one of the characters, one of the people who lived there. It was all so fascinating, the way this town brought together people from different worlds… and absolutely thrilling to learn that there was a universe where The Lord of the Rings was a true story. She wondered briefly how many other fictional works were based on the fact of another land, or how the stories of one world wound up in another… It was absolutely thrilling.

Dorcas shook her head at this question. “Nope,” she said cheerfully. “I’m from another place too. And time! Muggles- er, nonmagical humans exist where I’m from too, but since there are so many different sorts of magic here, and because the wizarding community I’m from certainly would have known about Sallow Hills if it existed there, I’m fairly certain I’m from a different universe.”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Intrigued by her story, Sam listened intently to what Dorcas had to say. He wasn’t used to the idea of it being normal for a large number of people to be able to use magic. Where he came from that was reserved particularly for wizards, not even the fair elves were able to use it.

Even after a few months in Sallow Hills, he didn’t fully understand the concept of ‘universes’. Most of the time he just nodded along instead of asking more questions, which was usually the best route to go as it seemed there were many people who shared his confusion on the matter.

“Is it very different from this one? Other than the wizards and moogles?” he asked, shifting to rest his open, thorn laden, palm on his lap.
