My name is Hayden (she/her)! In ye olden days, I had a semi-popular writing blog that I deleted on a whim, but I’m back now!
I write YA low-fantasy. Clearly (via fairy/walrus post), people want to believe there are bits of magic here and there, right alongside our ordinary world. Or people are genuinely shocked at the very notion of a walrus.
The book I am currently working on features four friends who are dealing with the hardships of life, growing up, deciding who they want to be. That’s boring, add 💫fairies💫
Ella is on a quest to find magic. She fancies herself to be one of the old poets of Ireland. After returning from an island out west, she’s been terribly ill… and all the myths end in death. It’s not looking good. Alongside her, she has Shira who is looking for magic for her own reasons, but she won’t talk about why. There’s Kate, a new student who fits in like she’s always been there, and Jack. He’s very polite. Ella isn’t polite, but she likes that he is.
This idea has been a long time in the making. It began when I was nine and I read a horrible story from the Junior Classics about a girl disappearing through time. It began with a reoccurring dream of a girl wearing an equestrian helmet. It began because of BBC Merlin. Arthurian legends and the like. I started writing this story after I did a deep dive on Irish history and folklore in the 5th in 6th centuries in my first year of uni. I gave a forty-five minute presentation on the subject, and I decided I needed to write or else I might die.

Hi, I love your blog!
Do you have any ideas for archaic words relating to sailors/ships/voyages/ocean?
Avast - a sea term, meaning stop, hold, enough. It always precedes some orders or conversation. Usually used by sailors.
Banyan day - a sea term for those days on which no meat is allowed to the sailors
Bat swain - a sailor
Breechmen - sailors
Calmewe - a kind of sea bird
Cobkey - a punishment by bastinado inflicted on offenders at sea
Doutremere - from beyond the sea
Fitty - a term applied to lands left by the sea
Landfeather - a bay of the sea
Laveer - to work a ship against the wind. An old sea term.
Loom - to appear larger than in reality, as things often do when at sea
Maryn - the sea coast
Nikir - a sea monster
Osprey - the sea eagle
Reeses - waves of the sea
Shamming Abraham - phrase common among soldiers and sailors, used when they counterfeit sickness or infirmity. It was probably derived from the Abraham men of Shakespeare's time, described in King Lear.
Se-stoerre - sea star
Sea nag - a ship
Shere - to run aground, as a ship does
Ship spy - a telescope used on the coast
Slug - a ship which sails badly
Soger - a sea insect that takes the possession of the shell of another fish
Swashway - a deep swampy place in large sands in the sea
Transfret - to pass over the sea
Viage - a voyage, or journey

Hi, thank you so much! Hope this helps with your writing.
I made these as a way to compile all the geographical vocabulary that I thought was useful and interesting for writers. Some descriptors share categories, and some are simplified, but for the most part everything is in its proper place. Not all the words are as useable as others, and some might take tricky wording to pull off, but I hope these prove useful to all you writers out there!

Ivory kept silent, a hair’s breadth away, but for Esther it must have been miles. Miles of restraints and secrets and those insufferable loyalties, the roles Ivory upheld, honor bound. She had seen her unleashed, the wild, selfish recklessness, trembling hands, and quiet, sweet whispers in the late hours all wound up tight now.
Writing Tips
Punctuating Dialogue
✧
➸ “This is a sentence.”
➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.
➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”
➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”
➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”
➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”
➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.
“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.
“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”
➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”
➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”
However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!
➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.
If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)
➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“
“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.
➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.
➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”
➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.
“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”
➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.
“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”
