How do you draw unkempt hair in a more simple style? I have a character who the most he does is probably brush his fingers through it but I can't draw him not looking like he has nicely styled wavy locks.

Using a variety of hair textures and abstract hair shapes can help create the messy effect you want;

Here’s an example for hair textures, The left is a full head of curly hair; on the right I made some generals shapes on the base to guide where the textures would change, this could be as smile and complex as you want!

image

If your character reference doesn’t allow for different hair textures, you can always try building abstract or conflicting shapes out of the hair itself. Long hair which is messy generally has lots of fly-aways you can shape, as well as crude edges or bunching together at random. Short hair is more diverse in my opinion, it depends on the texture and the cut, but I would try to group part of the hair together at random, and direct the shapes to give a sense of asymmetry to the silhouette. The simpler your style needs to be, the fewer general the shapes you may want to build into the body of the hair.

I hope this gives you some fun ideas!

hmm this is a little weird to ask but how would you incorporate body horror or the uncanny valley into a monster design? all ive seen so far is r/nosleep too wide smile rake ripoffs n they kinda. suck

i think the simplest way to dip into uncanny valley irt monster design is just incorporating some humanlike features  on a clearly nonhuman body. having a humanoid face on a quadrupedal form tends to do that very easily, anything to evoke a sense of wrongness but not quite jarringly horrific.

its why pacu teeth tend to unsettle people

image

or like if youre making something more humanoid, for example making body parts Longer than they should be seems to work really well

this is all subjective but i personally think the body parts that are best to modify for uncanny purposes are eyes, teeth, and hands because theyre the most recognizable, uniquely Human parts of our body. just putting human eyes or teeth or hands onto a nonhuman animal is enough to wig people out, and more delicate play with those features produces great results

uncanny valley horror works by givibg the impression of close approximation to what we know but being off in some way or another. thats part of why the really hackneyed “wooooo he was smiling UNNATURALLY WIDE SO SCARY” thing is popular on nosleep or why the  monster mimicking human voices or body but somehow Wrong (movements too jerky, voice has wrong cadence or sounds like an audio loop, etc) trope is so successful (and getting really old at this point even tho i like it)

body horror tends to work similarly but instead of “this looks like a human but something about it is really off and its creeping me out” its “THATS NOT HOW A BODY IS SUPPOSED TO WORK AHHHHH”. the easiest way (a little lazy but fun) is just giving things Extra parts or parts where they shouldnt be, like eyes teeth etc, or wildly distorting how body parts should be. body horror also requires recognizability, like you have to be able to see what was once familiar/human but you can be a lot more violent with it.

like as an example john carpenters “the thing” is like the classic body horror movie. body horror doesnt have to be quite as gorey to be successful but i think the general language established in that film is really good, just twisting forms we recognize in ways that feel painful and wrong

Hope This Isn't Too Annoying But You Do Have Any Tips For Drawing Teeth? I L O V E The Way You Draw Them

I've seen some amazing tutorials for teeth which explain much more about how teeth fit in the skill, which is very useful! But this is a very quick explanation of how I do Teeth! I don't often outline teeth too hard, unless I'm doing tusks, since the gums and teeth edges suggest pretty well without em!

So you might be saying: Lion why a guide on drawing black people? Well young blood it’s because a lot of people cant…seem…to draw…black people..Amazing I know.

image

Racist (caricatures) portrayals of black people have been around forever, and to this day people can’t seem to draw black people like they are human. If your artwork resembles any of the above even remotely your artwork is racist and offensive. If you try to excuse that as a stylistic choice you’re not only a terrible artist, but racist too!!! Congrats.

image

Whitewashing is also a problem. A lot of people refuse to draw black features on canonly black characters. While this example isn’t colored, lightening the skin-tone of a character is also considered whitewashing. So lets start with features!

image

Now all black people have different noses thats a no-brainer, but black noses tend to have flatter bridges, and wider nostrils. Please stay from triangular anime noses and small button noses. Your drawings should not depict black people with abnormally large noses. (Especially if you do not draw other characters this way)

image

If you feel like the way you draw lips on black characters is offensive or resembles a caricature,it probably does and you should change it. ABSOLUTELY AVOID PLACING LIPS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FACE.

image

Hair is so diverse! Please get used to drawing braids, locs, kinks and coils! If you can learn to draw ringlets and long waves you can learn how to draw black hairstyles.

image

Add clips! Learn how to draw baby-hairs and never be afraid to add color Pinterest and Google are free my dudes! Also try using square brushes for blocking in coils.

OK THAT’S ALL YOU GUYS

A Tutorial Masterpost

I said that I’d show some tutorials I have saved up to someone, but decided that I’d just go ahead and post most of what I have stored away and create a sort of masterpost out of it. (I figure it’ll help me just as much since, as of now, they’re all pretty scattered between my Tumblr and bookmarks)

A lot of these are hosted on my personal Tumblr, but I don’t change my url so it’s pretty safe to bookmark them there (and not have to worry about the url changing) if you don’t wish to reblog them yourself for whatever reason.

morty how the heck do you draw top heavy bodies (kinda like kuins) because its hell 2 me

OK SO THIS IS LATE AND IM BAD AT EXPLAINING SO I JUST SCREENSHOT’D MY PROCESS

Morty How The Heck Do You Draw Top Heavy Bodies (kinda Like Kuins) Because Its Hell 2 Me

FIRST, GET YOURSELF SOME MOOD MUSIC

Morty How The Heck Do You Draw Top Heavy Bodies (kinda Like Kuins) Because Its Hell 2 Me

BASE SKETCH: I don’t usually draw what’s in red there, but this is your basic inverted triangle shape. Basically, as long as you make sure the shoulders create an exaggerated silhouette that highlights the waist, you’re doing the top heavy thing right. Generally, you don’t wanna shrink the waist too much or else it looks REALLY weird, so if you want to exaggerate the shape more, try to focus more on the arms and shoulders. Keep the hips narrow.

Morty How The Heck Do You Draw Top Heavy Bodies (kinda Like Kuins) Because Its Hell 2 Me

LINING SHIT. Add some core muscles to actually support all that up top. I like making the pecs particularly pointy just to drive home the triangle thing.

It’s ya boi
