Imagine you’re some little evil woman sitting in Hades’ throne room when Orpheus walks in to make a deal to get Eurydice back, and Hades is like “yeah ok, just don’t look back otherwise she has to stay here” then walks out of the room. Almost immediately after hearing the conditions, Orpheus breaks his own neck so that it is physically impossible for him to turn it, and then demands that you gouge out his eyes for good measure. Eurydice then gets really upset because she’s convinced this is a sign that Orpheus hates her and never wants to see her again, and Orpheus is completely convinced that this was a normal and logical thing to do.
You are literally the only person in the universe who recognizes this as an act of love. They both then insult you to your face for thinking this is anything other than very normal (Orpheus), or petty hatred (Eurydice).

Hyperfixation induced lazer focus pulled me through the second book in one sitting and I was managing just fine processing all the new information being thrown around, but absolutely nothing prepared me for the force of being launched back into real life by reading "Hi, Not Fucking Dead, I'm Dad."

Nona the Ninth is one of my favorite books of all time. Not just because it's Locked Tomb, but it is the purest form of one of the big messages the series is trying to divulge.
The price of love is grief. We will never be free of it as long as we love anything at all. Our family, friends, our pets, even beloved media. Anything that connects that deeply to us that we love it will leave a gaping hole when it's gone.
But no one rejects loving to avoid grief. Every one of the characters holds on desperately to something they love, to levels that seem unhealthy to us. They want the perks without the cost.
John is holding on to a world and people that died 10k years ago.
The lyctors cling desperately to their cavaliers memories, to the point of being willing to end the 9 houses to honor them.
Cam held on to Pal, Pal held on to Dulcie. Harrow held on to Gideon so hard she disappeared her from her memory to avoid the grief she would pay for the privelege of caring for her.
But Nona loves indiscriminately. She loves the polluted sky, she loves the sad people, she loves the stray dogs and her friends and her teachers and Varun. She loves Pyrrhas lying ass, she loves Camilla and Palemedes, she loves crown and even cares about Judith. Nona isn't afraid of grief, because to her all that love balances it out. Nona is the only one in the end willing to pay the price for that 6 months of unconditional love. She knows from the beginning of the book that her own days are numbered, but she doesn't shy from it and avoid loving.
She loves all that much harder.
"If you could see your whole life, start to finish, would you change anything?" The movie Arrival (2016) approaches this same theme. If you knew what you'd lose, would you go back to avoid it? Would you keep away from the people and things you knew you'd lose? Would you shy away from experiencing love just because it hurts?

Do you think Alecto provided Anastasia some form of comfort when she fell apart after her failed lyctorhood? Maybe it’s wishful thinking to hope that Alecto would be her comfort in such a situation.

"Average dyke dies 17 times per year" factoid actually just statistical error. Average dyke dies 0 times per year. Resurrections Nav, who lives on Pluto & dies and comes back to life whenever a woman shows respect for her, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

Gideon is oblivious or perhaps in denial, Harrow is so in denial she makes herself get a lobotomy, and Nona is oblivious, to say the least

a friend is planning to read tlt and I need to resist the urge to say shit like “yeah idk Gideon’s relationship with Harrow is pretty fraught at the beginning and by the end of the first book she’s still kind of on the fence about it”
My 0 experience in animation is showing but uhhhh I love them your honor. Also this needs like so much more work lol but I need to let it go for a bit and studyyy

But it’s about Gideon asking Harrow if she’s angry at her for sacrificing herself, and Harrow tells her YES and she can’t help God (by extension her parents) making her strive towards Lyctorhood, making her make herself into a graveyard of souls, but God won’t get away with his crimes again.
