A look into the differences between Sirius and Regulus Black

For as long as Regulus could remember him and Sirius were different. I mean sure they shared dark curls, and pale skin, and delicately placed freckles. Sure they even shared the same last name, the same DNA, but that was where the similarities stopped.

Regulus had always been favored by his father and Sirius by their mother. He could tell in the way that their mother picked them up but only doted on Sirius. He had her attention while Regulus was just hanging there in her arms. He supposed it was because they were alike, almost carbon copies of each other. Grey eyes, and fiery tempers, and abrasive personalities. If the gods had placed something different between Sirius' legs he would have said Sirius was his mother reborn. Regulus thinks that's why he'd clinged to Sirius so hard.

Sirius was their mother and Regulus was his father. Harsh words, fierce love, and burning passion. A stark contrast to cold glares, distant declarations of affection, and deafening silence. Regulus spent most of his time with his father, closely observing and learning his ways. Sirius spent most of his time at home in his room, he didn't have to observe, or watch, or learn the ways of their mother. He was her and she was him. That was why she favored him, he decided. It hurt less that way.

Sirius always felt hot, wearing as little clothing as he could get away with. Regulus on the other hand was always cold, it'd truly be a treasure to see his delicate frame in anything other than a shirt that went from his shoulders to his wrists. He liked it that way, warm, and safe. Much unlike his environment.

Cats and dogs they were, him and his brother. At least that's what people said. Though Sirius had no clue how true that was, Regulus supposed he never would. Regulus was quiet, observant, independent, and secretive. A cat. Whereas Sirius was loud, friendly, overly social, and ever reliant on his 'pack'. A dog. They were similar, however, in the darkness of the fur their animagi adorned. They shared that at least.

But perhaps the most evident difference between them was the houses they were separated into. Regulus loved his brother he did, but not the same way he did before he was sorted into Slytherin. Regulus could see it, the look in Sirius' eyes when the dusty old hat shouted "Slytherin!". Whatever piece of his brother Regulus had, the piece that no one else did, was lost to him now and Regulus was sure he could never get it back. He couldn't love Sirius the way he did before, because Sirius did not love him the way he did before. "Just like the rest of us you are Reggie, just like the rest of us." Sirius said with a hand on his shoulder as he walked to sit at Slytherin table.

Regulus cried that night, why wasn't he allowed in Gryffindor, like his brother? He wished he was. Because he wasn't, he'd disappointed Sirius, something he'd never wanted to do, and by the looks of it, he could never make up for it. So Regulus wiped his tears and he decided he'd make his parents proud instead. If Sirius couldn't do right certainly he could. It was then he displayed his first Slytherin trait, ambition. From then on Sirius was his rival, Regulus made the right choice he though, as Sirius had completely pulled away from him by the time his first year was over.
