Neteyam Sully - Blog Posts

Jake was and has never been a bad father, and I'll die on this hill. Y'all be having serious problems knowing what a bad father is actually like.

Let me explain my point, but feel free to ignore if u want 🤷🏻‍♀️

So, first, the movie from the very beginning let us know as audience that the Sullys, before humans arriving again, had a pretty tight family relationship; they were close, even with Lo'ak, Kiri and Neteyam being already grown up. Jake's sweet, and steady, having games with the kids and being the ultimate malewife and dad UNTIL, as I've already said, humans arrive to Pandora. He looks horrified, he knows what's about to happen, and we eventually watch how humans start to burn and turn everything into ashes. Then, the 1 year time jump appears, and he's already the big bad Marine leader that y'all call "a bad father" but, being honest? I don't blame him.

Before Pandora Jake had nothing. He was alone, crippled, and living on a dying earth. No family, no lovers, no actual friends. Pandora gave him everything, so he knew what humans coming back to Pandora meant for him and his family. For him and everything he had built the last years.

He already went through war with humans. He already saw, and knew, what they were capable of. At the beginning, he had nothing to lose, and even then he gave it all to defend Pandora and its people. Now, he had children and a family of his own with the woman he loved. Imagine knowing that not only you could lose your home, but your family too.

Jake made a lot of mistakes in that year, that's for sure, but those mistakes don't make him a bad father straight away. He's allowed to commit mistakes, especially since he was actually trying to keep everyone safe.

Making Lo'ak and Neteyam call him sir, and have them practically being perfect little soldiers at the age of 14/15 wasn't an A+ parenting behavior, even I found it annoying, but it was understandable. Jake even says in the comics that even though he wasn't human anymore, he still felt like a Marine. So, afraid, scared of what humans could do now, he decides to make his kids "stronger" in a way of protecting them for the dangers that came from the outsides of Pandora, for a more human kind of danger, in the only way he knew; as a Marine. Because even when Pandora had their ways to make kids into men, no Pandoran kid is fully prepared for the threat that the sky people actually represent.

And no, I'm not saying he's innocent; he was rude to Lo'ak, and put such a responsibility over Neteyam's shoulders as if he wasn't just a year older than his brother but, be fr, you can't blame Jake for being afraid of his kids lives.

No one is born knowing how to be a good parent, neither a good son. Jake was wrong on how hard he was on them, yes, even Neytiri tells him that, but then he answers "i thought we lost him" (about Neteyam) showing how SCARED he was at the moment, and how much he cared about the kids. And at that scene we literally get to understand that Jake started to split things up as soon as he saw humans coming to Pandora, as a way of keeping everyone "safe".

Now, Jake was already stressed knowing that everything was falling down to pieces because of HIM. His kids had already put themselves in danger by going out and crossing paths with Quaritch's team, and nothing seemed to go for the better, not even at the Metkayina's clan. Jake was still the target, he was the one actually being hunted; he knew that his mere existence put the clans, his family and anyone near him in danger, and that made everything harder. Because not only he had to be a father but a leader and a warrior too. Now, think about being in his place and having your kids putting themselves in even more danger as if danger itself wasn't already that worrying.

Then, tragedy happens and Jake suddenly blames Lo'ak for Neteyam's death. He's heartbroken, and doesn't think about the impact his words might have over his son. The fight occurs, and Jake's left injured and way too weak to save himself from drowning.

Lo'ak comes to save him, teaching him how to breath and telling him about the way of water. Jake sees his son, the one whom he had been the "worst father" for, being not just a kid but a man. He sees his only remaining son begging for him to not give up his life, telling him "I can't lose you too". Payakan helps them, also making Jake realize that Lo'ak was always right about the Tulkun, showing him once again that he had been failing way too much when his kids needed him the most.

Jake, lost at words, knowing how much he had fucked everything up, tells Lo'ak "I see you, son" as a way of saying "I understand how wrong I was, and how hard I was with you. I get it now, and I recognize it too. You're important to me, more than what you think" and Lo'ak's face shows relief, even peace. Meaning that both of them had learned their lesson.

We get to hear Jake narrating how he knew now that them being a family was their biggest weakness, but at the same time their biggest strength and fortress. So, at the end of the movie, and sadly after Neteyam's death, Jake gets to see that what he thought at the beginning was the right thing to do, was actually wrong. He realizes that the best way of keeping each other safe is by being a strong and united family again; no marine training, nor military codenames and ways of addressing. They just needed to be strong TOGETHER, not apart. He had to be their father, not their boss.

And I might not have children of my own, but I had to take care of my little brother since I was little, I practically raised him, and I used to be rough with him as a way of protect him of what I went through when I was his age all because I was afraid. I wanted to put him in a glass container to protect him from everything and everyone, even if that meant sucking at "parenting".

Jake made a lot of mistakes all because of fear, and that's valid. So I'll not take anyone calling him a bad father, not when he literally tried everything he could without going mad.

I love the Avatar era on tik tok, the edits r amazing and I literally enjoy all the fuss, but, yk what I'm rlly not enjoying? the amount of people, no, the amount of ADULTS throwing hate and death wishes to Spider.

SPOILERS OF ATWoW BELOW ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Putting stupid and messed up captions like "it should've been Spider" or "I wish Lo'ak kills him" and even "Lo'ak is entering his Anakin era, Spider is so done", as if all the hate would, in some way, bring Neteyam back in the next movie.

And my whole problem with all this is the lack of empathy people have over Spider's backstory and EVERYTHING he went through. He was an outsider, an outcast, not only with the Sullys but with the humans back on the lab as well. He had no real family, and even tho he tried to fit in with Jake and his family, they never really cared about him. Not the enough. Quaritch literally took him, abducted him, and even though Kiri was worried, crying for him, all that Jake said was "he's gonna be alright" and then, ofc, he forgot entirely about him. He was more worried about him spilling out the beans about their operations and base rather than his safety. (and, btw, he was tortured and still never gave a single piece of information). Not to mention how Neytiri ignored Kiri telling her that Spider had fallen off the tree.

And the whole "he belongs with his own kind" thing Neytiri had going on was so out of pocket, specially, since his own very husband, Toruk Makto himself, was a human first. And Spider was a little kid atm, a kid playing and trying to fit.

Now, imagine how surprised Spider was when suddenly, out of no fucking where, the man whom he had been told all his childhood was evil, treated him decently. Stopping the scientists of keeping hurting him and melting his brain, respecting his decision to go by Spider even tho human Quaritch wouldn't have given a fuck about his preferences, listening to what he had to say (like the na'vi lessons); even listening to his pleadings on not to hurt, or kill, the clans. And, ofc, the cherry on top: Quaritch saving him from Neytiri, losing his chance over Jake (his WHOLE motivation and goal) even though Spider only cared for Kiri's well being all the time.

And yes, Quaritch may have been manipulating him, I don't doubt that, but Spider is a noble kid. He's noble, kind, caring and would never leave anyone to die not mattering if they're good or bad. Something that makes him entirely different from his dad. He didn't wanted to save him, we literally see him struggling with taking a decision, but deep down he can't just leave him to die. Not when, after all, he's someway his dad, and the one that saved him from Neytiri moments ago. It's a debt, and if you struggle with at least just an inch of daddy issues y'all may be familiar with that sensation of "maybe he's changing, he's not a lost cause. He cares about me".

He's not a fucking traitor. With, or without Quaritch, they would've kept hunting the Sullys. The military lady said it herself, that with Jake being "the leader" they were on disadvantage, bc Jake knew how to strike them. He was already a target, Quaritch had been just the scapegoat to catch him faster.

It was dumb to save him? Yes, definitely. But it's understandable, and wishing that Lo'ak, his literally childhood best friend, kills him after finding out, or Neytiri, it's just messed up.

I watched with great interest how Toruk Makto and his family landed on our shores. My brother Aonung and our cousin pulled me with them, as they walked towards the Sully brothers.

I smiled, as both of them showed the hand gesture for 'I see you'.

I politely copied their action, but my brother only stared at them. He let out a laugh when he sorounded them and suspected their tails.

"Is that supposed to be a tail!? ", Aonung mocked and grabbed one of the boys' tails.

I walked over to him and slapped his chest, so that he would let go.

" Stop it", I mumbled, "They're our guests."

I looked back to the Sully brothers and the one who appeared to be the eldest nodded his head into my direction with a smile.

I wanted to reply, as I watched how my father, the chief arrived on his Skimwing to greet Toruk Makto. I didn't really listen to their conversation, as I inspected the Sully family. They were six people all together. Jake Sully, Toruk Makto, and his mate. And of course, their children, two boys and two girls.

"They are not even real Na'vi!"

My gaze was pulled towards my mother who held up the hands of one of the girls. She had five fingers, instead of four. Na'vi all around us started hissing at them, even my brother, but my sister Tsireya and I looked at them with great interest. I was really intrigued by this rather uncommon family.

"Toruk Makto and his family will stay", my father finally declared. I looked at my sister happyly. She smiled and grabbed my hand, pulling not only me but also my brother with her to the front.

"Our children Aonung, Tsireya and Y/N will teach your children our ways", my father explained.

"But father, why-", Aonung tried to protest but he was shut up by our father.

Tsireya and I smiled at each other before helping the Sullys with their luggage.

"Come on", my sister declared existed, "my sister and I will show you our village."

I stepped forward and took a sleeping bag from one of the boys. He smiled at me thankfully.

"Neteyam", he introduced himself.

I smiled as I guided him through the village.

"Y/N. It is nice to meet you, Neteyam."

The Sullys had been with us for a while now and they had started to get acclimatized to the village and the shores. We had gotten to know all of them by now.

Neteyam, the boy I first met was Indeed the eldest and he was also the one, I spend the most time with. He was very polite and a quick learner, but he was also very sarcastic, especially towards his brother.

Lo'ak. He was one year younger but very fiery. He seemed to be a troublemaker but I liked him anyway. He was a sweet boy with a strong heart. And I could tell that he and my sister Tsireya had something for each other. It was very obvious to everyone around, except for them.

Kiri and Tuk were the two girls. I must say, it was a little bit hard to get to know Kiri. She was mostly by herself, but she was a snarky girl. Always ready to leave a comment on anything. But her Connection to Eywa never ceased to amaze me.

And then there was Tuk. The little girl was always happy and positive. The first day was a little bit hard for her, but after that she was a ray of sunshine. Always ready to learn and see.

In the first week, we had showed the Sullys how to swim and started to teach them how to hold their breath longer.

Now it was time for them to ride an Ilu. I had called mine for today's lesson. I petted her head gently and gave her a fish as a treat. I smiled and watched as Aonung gathered a few other Ilus to teach the Sullys. Lo'ak was the first one. But to say he failed completely was probably an understatement. I couldn't help but smile a bit at his attempt. He wasn't the first one to fall of an Ilu.

"Would you teach me?"

I turned around and noticed that Neteyam was approaching me. I smiled and got of my Ilu.

"Your Brother doesn't really seem to like us", he explained.

I could only nod:"Yeah, Aonung has something against you. I don't know why though. Hold on here."

I helped Neteyam onto my Ilu and grabbed his hands to show him where to hold on.

"Make Tsaheylu", I instructed. Neteyam nodded and made the bond. My ilu shuddered a bit at the sudden connection. She probably wasn't used to someone who wasn't Mekayina.

"Feel her body", I explained to Neteyam, "Feel her fins, her gills, her motions."

I watched as Neteyam closed his eyes and concentrated on the animal. I smiled and slowly got underwater to guide the Ilu. She followed me suit. Neteyam opened his eyes as we breached the water surface.

I paid a little bit of extra attention to the Ilu swimming slowly, so that Neteyam wouldn't fall off like his brother.

We swam together for a few minutes, before I let go of the Ilu. Neteyam looked at me perplexed, like he didn't want to swim alone, but I gave him a smile. I signed for him to stay calm. He only nodded, before I let go. He struggled for a second, as the Ilu got faster, but after a while he managed to slow her down. The two of them swam around me a few times.

As we surfaced again, I heard Neteyam laugh:"I did it!"

"You did it!", I agreed with a smile as I petted my Ilus head, "You could almost ride a Skimwing!"

"Really?", Neteyam asked as he dismounted the Ilu again.

"No, you Skxawng", I joked, "A skimwing is far to hard to handle for you!"

"Oh really?", Neteyam mocked and leaned his elbow on the Ilu.

"Yes", I smiled and clicked my tongue. The Ilu quickly swam away, so that Neteyam fell into the water.

"Hey!", he complained and got up again.

"Have you ever ridden a skimwing?", he asked curiosly.

"Once", I said looking down to pet my Ilu.

"Really!? What was it like?", Neteyam asked.

"My father allowed me to ride his once. It was a little bit easier, because he was already trained, but still hard.", I explained.

"Wow", Neteyam breathed.

"You're making fun of me!", I laughed and playfully slapped his chest.

Neteyam raised his hands, but the grin on his face gave him away:"I'm not!"

"You are!", I argued and splashed some water over him.

"Oh, just you wait!", he laughed and jumped forward, grabbing my arms and pulling me underwater with him.

"Neteyam!", I yelled, but it was too late. We were already underwater.

I pushed him away from me, but I couldn't suppress the smile on my face.

'You Skxawng', I signed, 'You're going to regret that'

Neteyam raised his eyebrow at me like he was asking what, I meant but I just smiled, as my Ilu hit his back with her snout. Not so hard to actually hurt him, but he was puzzled at least.

I grinned as he as performed an Involuntarily backward roll in the water.

As he had calmed down again, he looked over to me and tried to grab my arm, but I was faster and swam away from him.

'You're never going to get me, Forrest boy', I signed, a grin still on my face.

Let's just say, the rest of our Day was spend with the two of us chasing each other on the Ilus. Since it was Neteyams first Day on an ilu, he mostly lost.

As the eclipse was getting closer, the two of us slowly retreated to the Village. We were talking about the Tulkuns, as Neteyam spotted my brother and Lo'ak fighting.

He stopped talking and charged forward to help his brother. I was a little bit impressed by how he put Aonung in his place, but I didn't say anything. Aonung kind of deserved this.

As the two finished their conversation, I walked over to Aonung to ask him why he was so rude with the Sullys.

But before I could say anything, Lo'ak grabbed Aonungs attention. He wanted to explain something about his five fingers, but at least when he clenched his fist, I realized what he was about to do, so I stepped back.

What had to come, came and Lo'ak punched Aonung in the face.

I hoped that it would end here but it didn't. Aonung started to attack Lo'ak. He tackled him down and his friends came to help him.

"Aonung!", I yelled and grabbed his arm to pull him back. But he pushed me back into the sand.

"Stop it!!", I yelled again and tried to separate them.

But when Neteyam joined us, pure chaos had broken out.

And before we were stopped, everyone got their fair share of scrachtes and wounds. Fortunately, mine were the mildest. I only received a bruise on my forehead from a elbow that had accidentally hit me.

I watched as Lo'ak and Neteyam were pulled away by their parents. I smiled at them apologetic. I just saw how Neteyam signed for me to meet him later, before my mother pulled me away.

"Aonung!", she scolded as she inspected my head, "How could you let something happen to your sister!?"

"It's my own fault, mother!", I tried to explain but she hushed me as she put a Healing cream on my bruise.

"Thank you", I said after she finished. I slightly bowed my head:"May I borrow some of it?"

She inspected me for a second, before handing me a small tin.

"Make sure he is taken care of properly", she whispered to me before I could leave.

I felt the heat rising to my cheeks:"Yes mother"

She smiled at me one last time, before I left her to help Aonung with his wounds.

I didn't have to search long to find Neteyam.

He was sitting on the shore, watching the Ilu.

"Neteyam!", I called out for him. He turned around and got up. As he noticed that it was me, he smiled.

"Y/N",he replied as I reached him, "Are you alright?"

"Don't worry", I mumbled, looking down shyly, "I'm fine, thank you"

"Oh thank the great mother", he said while grabbing my hands.

"But you look horrible", I quickly changed the topic.

"Oh come one", Neteyam grinned,"I bet your brother looks far worst."

"He does", I smiled as I sat him down in front of me.

Neteyam seemed to be proud of himself, as I started to apply the paste to his forehead.

I had to get closer to him, to properly see the wound.

"Does it hurt?", I whispered.

Neteyam remained silent for a second, his eyes just following my every motion.

"No", he finally said.

I only nodded and finished tending to his wounds.

"Thank you", Neteyam murmured.

I smiled, before slowly grabbing his hand. I softly inspected his fingers. Contrary to his brother, he only had four.

"Your arms are really thin", I joked slightly.

"Oh come on", Neteyam laughed. He gently intertwined our fingers, "I can swim anyway"

I looked up at him:"You can indeed"

Neteyam kept quiet, he only smiled at me, before leaning forward. He softly kissed my forehead and I closed my eyes at his intimate gesture.

I felt how I started to blush, as he maintained the close distance.

"Neteyam!? Y/N!?"

We snapped apart, as I heard my sister call our names.

After a few seconds, I saw as Tsireya approached us and we got up.

She had a grin on her face, like she knew what she just stumbled into.

"Come on, we need your help", she explained and grabbed both of our arms.

"What happened?", I asked.

Her smile suddenly dropped:"Lo'ak is missing."

"What!?", Neteyam asked. He looked at me for a second, but I Only nodded and the three of us sprinted towards our Ilus to find the young troublemaker.
