Love In Cheese

You closed the door of your house, walking straight towards the living room in small steps. You threw your heavy bag on the floor and plopped down on the couch, allowing your tired body to rest.

Friday had finally arrived after what felt like the longest week of your life. To say you were tired was an understatement. If you had to describe how you felt, you'd say that your soul had probably left your body sometime in the middle of the week, leaving behind only an empty carcass.

For the thousandth time that day, you wondered if all the stress caused by college was really worth it. Between student council meetings, tutoring the students, and dozens of assignments you still had to do, you were slowly losing your head. Why couldn't life be like in The Princess Diaries? Where was your lost grandmother to take you to Genovia and reveal you were a filthy rich princess?

Taking a deep breath, you came to the conclusion that life wasn't fair.

Your head throbbed, but that was nothing compared to the hole sitting in your stomach. Through the window, you could see the sun setting on the horizon. You barely remembered when was the last time you ate. Probably early in the morning, where you only had time to drink a glass of orange juice in one gulp before rushing off to college. As the president of the student council, you couldn't afford to be late. You know the rules: 'be a good example', 'be responsible' and blah blah blah.

Gathering all your remaining strength, you decided to go find something that could satisfy your hunger. Nonetheless, minutes later, a low whine escaped through your lips while you stared at the empty shelves of your fridge.

You mentally cursed yourself for forgetting to shop. Sometimes living alone had its downsides. Apparently, if you didn't buy food, your fridge wouldn't magically refill itself. Life really wasn't fair.

With no other option – no, going to the grocery store wasn't an option –, you took your phone and called the familiar number of the pizza parlor your best friend worked at, hoping he'd be the one to pick up the call and not Minho. That little devil seemed to find pleasure in denying you your well-deserved discounts.

“Domino's Pizza, how can I help you?”

“Seungmin!” You shouted excitedly at hearing your friend's voice.

“Do you really need to scream in my ear every single time? You're gonna make me go deaf one of these days.”

"Rude. I'm just happy to hear the voice of my favorite person in this entire world. I miss you so much.”

“Firstly, we last saw each other 4 hours ago. And secondly…” He took a deep breath, pretending to be disappointed with your tactics. “We both know you’re lying. You just want to please me to get a discount. Like always.”

You gasped, "That’s so untrue. I can't believe you'd say that."

“Y/n.” He warned.

“It's been 5 hours since you last saw me, I mean. Are you not counting? I'm disappointed in you, Kim Seungmin.”

“Y/n.”

“Okay, okay. You won. You’re right, I’m wrong. Happy? But you know I love you with all my heart, right?”

Even without seeing him, you could practically see Seungmin rolling his eyes. He sighed in defeat, "I hate you. What do you want? The usual?"

“Yep. You know me so well.”

"Sometimes I wish I didn't." He mumbled like a frustrated child, making you laugh. “The manager will kill me if he finds out how much discount you get per month.”

"C'mon! I order there almost every weekend. I think I deserve a good discount for being such a loyal customer.”

"No. You're only loyal ‘cause that’s the closest pizzeria to your house, which makes the delivery fee cheaper. Not to mention you're too lazy to get your sorry ass off the couch and go buy your own food somewhere else.”

You rolled your eyes, breaking into a wide smile. “It all depends on the point of view, my dear Watson.”

“Whatever. I don't get paid enough to care. Your pizza arrives in 10 minutes.” He hastily said before hanging up the phone.

While the pizza didn't arrive, you decided to take a quick shower. Unfortunately, the hot water wasn't able to ease your headache, but it did make the tense muscles on your body relax a little.

You had just sat down on the couch to watch a movie, your hair still a little wet, when the doorbell rang.

Hungry, you ran toward the door, your greetings to Felix already on the tip of your tongue, but what you saw took you by surprise. It was, shall we say... a very intriguing scene.

The Domino's bike was parked in front of your house, where a boy – who definitely wasn't Felix – struggled to open the compartment where the pizzas were kept. He wore the classic white shirt and red cap of the pizzeria uniform. A thin layer of sweat covered his forehead, the tip of his tongue pressed between his lips in a grimace of concentration.

Noticing he was being watched, he froze and stared back at you like a deer caught in headlights. His doe eyes were open wide, making the nervousness in them clearly visible. His hands trembled discreetly.

It was only then that you realized you knew him. He went to the same college as you, and even though you didn't share any classes, he shared some with Seungmin. Both of them were friends, but you two had never really talked, only exchanged polite smiles and quick good mornings when you met in the hallways.

Even so, you couldn't deny that you always thought he was cute.

“H-hi!” He said uncertainty, voice cracking slightly. “My name is pizza. I came to bring your Han.”

He flashed you a big smile that made his whole face light up. You struggled to contain a laugh.

"I don't think I paid for any Han, but if he's cute like you, Mr. Pizza, I'd certainly take it."

You didn't know where this surge of courage had come from. Usually, you were a wreck at that sort of thing, but something about the way his cheeks flushed made your heart leap triumphantly in your chest. Perhaps, being a little bold sometimes had its perks.

He threw his head back and covered his face with his hands, letting out a long sigh. “Idiot! Really, Jisung? Really?” He mumbled to himself. “Why did I say that? I promised I wouldn't mess up anymore, but the universe isn't helping me! Did my first delivery really have to be for a pretty girl like her? That's not helping me at all!"

"Oh, you think I'm pretty?" You asked in a teasing tone, ignoring, at least for now, the way your heart missed a few beats.

“What?” He yelled, panic flowing through his veins. He shyly scratched his neck. “Crap! I was talking out loud this whole time, wasn’t I?

“Yeah, kind of.”

He whimpered and lowered his head, trying, unsuccessfully, to hide the strong blush on his cheeks.

You grinned, deciding to end the suffering of the poor boy in front of you. You walked over to the bike compartment, skillfully releasing the latches that kept it from opening during the ride.

He looked at you in awe, making you giggle. "There you go! Han Jisung, right?”

“Y-yes. But how do you kno-” His voice slowly faded away as the realization of who you were hit him like a bucket of cold water. He felt his nervousness increase exponentially. “Y-you're Y/n, right? Seungmin’s friend.”

You nodded.

"H-how did you...how..." He tried to say, looking between you and the pizza compartment.

“Oh, this?” You shrugged. “I've seen Felix, the other delivery boy, do this a million times. Don't worry, it really is a little hard to open.”

Jisung felt a warm sensation wash through his body. He knew you were just saying that to comfort him, the way you opened that thing, in a blink of an eye, was proof enough to him.

Before his brain could start to crucify him for being such an idiot, you opened the kindest smile he had ever seen in his life, making him forget for a second about everything, even his own name.

"Sorry. It's my first day. I think I'm still a little lost.” He confessed, shyly.

"Don't worry. I get why you're so tense, the first day really sucks. I remember one time when I helped my aunt in her coffee shop. I was a total disaster! Man, those coffee machines are no joke.” You laughed, shaking your head. “I walked out of there soaked in coffee and with a piece of cake stuck in my hair. I still don't know how it got there.”

You were so distracted remembering the past that you missed the fond look Jisung gave you.

He knew it was crazy, he barely knew you, but he felt so comfortable in your presence. There you were, exposing an embarrassing situation in your life just to make him feel better. Not even his own friends would do that for him, and even if they did, it'd only be after laughing their ass off.

When your eyes met again, you smiled timidly. "Sorry, I'm talking too much."

"It's alright. It's good to know I'm not the only clumsy one in this town." He winked at you, making you both laugh. "Right, let me get your pizza."

You looked with amusement at the way Jisung awkwardly pulled the stack of pizzas out of the compartment. As he struggled to balance the boxes in his arms, you couldn't help but notice the way his muscles flexed under his tight shirt.

"Here!" He said excitedly, handing you a pizza box.

Again, you tried to hide your laugh, not wanting to embarrass him even more. "Hm, how can I say that... That's not my pizza."

“Hmm?” He stared at you, confused, subtly cocking his head to the side.

"Here, let me help you."

You approached him, placing the pizza he had given you on the top of the pile of boxes he was holding and reaching for another one further down. You showed him the tag attached to the side of the box.

“As much as I love pepperoni, I'm sure the owner of this pizza wouldn't be so happy if I stole it from him. I ordered a cheese pizza.”

His eyes widened so much that for a moment you thought they would pop out of his face. He let out a long whine, lips pouting cutely.

“I should quit this job. I'm a disaster."

"No, you’re doing good. Don't be so hard on yourself, these things happen." You gently shoved his free arm, trying to cheer him up.

"No. I'm the worst pizza delivery boy in the history of pizza delivery boys.” He threw his head back in a dramatic gesture.

“Now you're just being dramatic. Come on, you're not that bad. Look at the bright side! At least you didn't drop any pizza!” You watched as he withered, a glint of guilt in his eyes. “Oh my God, you dropped a pizza?”

He sighed, “Two, to be exact. My manager said he'd fire me if it happened again.”

"Shit!"

“But it wasn't my fault! Well, not entirely.” He hastened to say. “Someone didn't tie the boxes properly before handing them to me. The boxes decided to jump to their death, they committed suicide, I couldn't do anything!”

You knew it was wrong, but you couldn't hold back your laughter any longer. Even sulking, Jisung couldn't stop the butterflies from roaming freely in his stomach at the melodic sound of your laugh.

He didn't know what it was. Maybe it was the way your still wet hair fell graciously over your shoulders. Or the way your eyes gleamed in the sun. Perhaps it was the form you poorly tried to control your laughter to not embarrass him. Jisung couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was, but he found himself completely fascinated by you.

"I'm sorry." You said, breathless. "I shouldn't have laughed."

"It's okay. It's kinda funny." He shrugged and cracked a smile, not wanting you to feel guilty about something so silly. "So... hm... how's college?"

You groaned. "Terrible. I was seriously considering dropping everything.”

"What?" He yelled, surprised. “No, you can't do that! I mean, of course you can, but you're so smart and brilliant-”

"Why do you think that?" You interrupted him, confused.

“I don’t think that, I know that. You're the student council president! And, as if that wasn't enough, you're always offering help to students who are struggling with their studies, even being super busy with your own things. Actually, you helped a friend of mine, his name’s Jeongin. Man, he got so happy when he passed his economics test. And that was all thanks to you. So, yes, you're really cool.”

“Some people would call me boring or a snobby know-it-all.” You muttered, feeling embarrassed under his intense gaze. You weren't used to receiving compliments.

“Well, those people are a bunch of losers, in my humble opinion. Don't listen to them. You're amazing.”

"Thanks, Jisung. It means a lot to me." You smiled shyly, feeling the weight on your shoulders easing a little be.

He flashed you a warm smile. “Anytime! Well, guess I better get going before these pizzas get cold. I don't want th-"

At that moment, the world seemed to enter in slow motion mode right before your eyes. You watched as Jisung, without looking, took a step back and tripped over a hole in the sidewalk, causing him to lose his balance.

The stacked boxes swayed dangerously, but he quickly wrapped his other arm around them, keeping them from falling. However, the boxes at the top didn't get the same luck. They slid towards the floor, and Jisung, paralyzed by fear, just watched the scene unfold as a cruel kind of deja vu. He could already picture himself tomorrow morning, looking for another job to pay for his college tuition.

But, as a sort of capeless superhero, you held the boxes in your arms, saving them from their terrible future and, consequently, the job Jisung had fought so hard to get.

"You really need to be more careful." You muttered as you shook your head.

Relief surged through his chest. He wouldn't be fired. Like the Powerpuff girls, you had saved the day. He grinned so wide that his cheeks ached, but the happiness he felt was short-lived. It all came crashing down when he noticed that your cheese pizza was now lying on the floor, having fallen right into a puddle.

His heart sank into his stomach.

“Hey, are you okay?” You asked worriedly. His expression resembled an abandoned puppy.

"Your pizza..." He muttered so low that you almost didn't hear him.

Looking where his gaze was, you noticed for the first time that your pizza was thrown on the floor. It was still sealed, but it had fallen into a large puddle of water, remnants of the rain that had fallen earlier. You already could see the cardboard of the box falling apart.

"Oh, I must have dropped it while running to help you." You sadly said. "But it's okay, at least you won't get fired on your first day, right?"

Jisung shook his head. He couldn't understand how you could still smile after this. “But your pizza...”

“It's nothing. Forget it. Here, I'll help you. We don't want another accident.” Walking over to the bike, you carefully placed the pizzas back in the compartment, doing the same with the pizzas in Jisung's arms.

He watched it all silently, sadness floating in his eyes. Why did he have to be such an idiot? Why did he have to be so clumsy? How could he do that to you when you only show him kindness from the start? Those were the only things that crossed his mind.

"It's all my fault." He admitted, embarrassed. "I'm really sorry."

“Hey, relax. It's fine, I swear."

Amazingly, you weren't angry about what had happened. Of course you were sad because your hunger wouldn't be satisfied anytime soon, but you just couldn't get mad at Jisung, not when he was looking at you like that, with his doe eyes and fluffy cheeks.

You took the money from your pocket and handed it to him. “Here you go, you can keep the change.”

“W-what?” He almost screamed, making you startle a little. “No. I cannot accept this. I can't. Your pizza was ruined because of me, I-"

“Han, stop it. It was my fault, I had already received the pizza, and I was the one who threw it on the floor. Nothing fairer than paying for it.”

“No, you stop with your nonsense logic. It was my fault. I'll pay for your pizza and-"

Stubbornly, you took his hand in yours and gave him the money, forcing his fingers to close over the bills. You took the helmet off the bike's handle and put it gently on him, taking care to tie it securely.

Busy with your little task, you didn't notice how close you were to him, but Jisung certainly did. His body stiffened, breath catching in his throat. He just hoped you wouldn't hear the pounding of his heart or notice the slight shiver that ran down his spine every time your fingers brushed his skin.

"Okay. You're ready to go." You said satisfied, pushing him gently towards the bike.

"But I..."

“You talk too much. It was my fault, end of the story. Now go make your deliveries, Mr. Pizza.”

With a pang in his heart, he stood there while you picked the ruined pizza and walked towards your house. He tried to smile when you waved at him one last time before closing the door.

Love In Cheese

After the disastrous encounter with the cute delivery boy, you threw away your pizza with a heavy heart, lamenting the amount of wasted cheese. But you didn't regret even for a minute the choice you made. You might not have a juicy cheese pizza, but knowing that Jisung still had his job was enough for you.

Fortunately, you found a lost package of ramen in the back of the cupboard. It wouldn't be a 5 Star Michelin meal, but that would be more than enough to kill the monster begging for food in your belly.

A while later, you were lying on your couch watching a random movie when you felt your phone vibrate, announcing two new messages from Seungmin.

Seungmin: Hey, idiot

Seungmin: I didn't know that besides stealing discounts you were stealing hearts too

You stared at your phone screen for a couple of seconds, trying to understand what your idiot best friend was talking about.

You: Are you drunk? I have no idea what you're talking about 🤔

Seungmin: Don't play innocent, miss. I'm talking about Han Jisung

You: Nope. I still don't get it

Seungmin: God, give me patience 🤦

Seungmin: Han came back from deliveries looking like a fool in love, saying that he had found the sweetest girl in the world, his guardian angel, his hero, whatever 🙄. He even kissed Minho's cheek before leaving!!!

You: And he's still alive?

Seungmin: Surprisingly, yes

You: Okay, but what do I have to do with it?

Seungmin: Omg 🤦🤦🤦 I must have killed a king in my past life to deserve this

Seungmin: He was talking about you, dumbass! How can you be so oblivious?

You: You don't know that

Seungmin: Yes, I know, 'cause he scolded me for not introducing you to him earlier

Shocked and with cheeks burning hot, you put your phone down, burying your face in the pillows to muffle your screams.

You were so distracted acting like a teenager in love that you jumped on the couch when you heard the doorbell ring. You looked at the clock and saw that it was almost 11 pm. Who would it be at this hour?

Not being stupid, you went to the kitchen and grabbed the most powerful weapon you had at the moment: a frying pan. You knew you were far from looking scary like Jason with his axe or Pennywise with his balloons, but at least you did have a weapon.

"Who is it?" You asked suspiciously.

“Hm, it's me... Han Jisung. The clumsy delivery boy. I don't know if you remember me, but-"

“How could I forget the boy who made me drop my precious pizza to save his job?” You said in a teasing tone as you opened the door.

You had to stop for a second to take in the image in front of you. There was Jisung, no longer dressed in the Domino's uniform, now he wore a blue hoodie with tight pants that defined his thick thighs well. His black hair was styled back, granting you a good view of his handsome face. Even from a distance, his strong perfume made you feel a little dizzy.

Damn! How could he get even more handsome?

"That's me." He chuckled. "Sorry again about that."

"Relax. I'm just kidding.” You said shyly, feeling suddenly insecure for being in only your pajamas in front of him.

“Are you serious? I thought you had changed your mind and wanted to fry me alive, especially with that frying pan in your hands, Rapunzel.” He said playfully, making you giggle.

"I'll let you know if I change my mind."

You shared a knowing smile and stood there, outside your house in the middle of the night, lost in each other's eyes as the moon shone above you.

"What's this?" You ask, noticing the pizza box he was holding. “Are you still working? I thought the pizzeria had already closed.”

He grinned sheepishly. "It is. Actually, I-I bought this for you. You know, to apologize for earlier. It's cheese pizza! And before you say otherwise, yes, it was totally and completely my fault.”

“Jisung, you didn't need to do this.” You whispered in awe.

“Yes, I did. I also wanted to thank you for saving my ass from getting fired. You truly were my hero today.” He smiled fondly.

“Stop being so dramatic. Anyone would have done the same.” You accept the pizza, trying to disguise the blush on your cheeks.

“You're very kind to think like that, but not everyone is an angel like you.”

Okay, what was going on? Where was that shy, clumsy boy from earlier? Your poor heart couldn't handle this.

“W-well, thanks for the pizza.” You broke the silence, not being able to think of anything smarter to say. "You really didn't have to."

“No problem. I wanted to do this because, after today, I'm sure you stole a pizza my heart.”

You frowned. His words entered your ears, but your brain was having trouble processing them. You definitely weren't expecting this.

“Hm…” He swallowed hard, running his hands through his hair. In a not-so-discreet manner, he took a small piece of paper from his jeans pocket, where was written what appeared to be phrased in a hasty handwriting. “Are you a pizza box? Because I can't wait to get your top off. NO WAIT-"

You couldn't hold on any longer. You suddenly burst out laughing.

Jisung waved his hands desperately, a thousand apologies slipping out of his lips. “Sorry, I didn't mean that. I didn't realize how bad that would sound out loud. I'm not a creepy, I promise. I didn't mean to disrespect you or make you uncomfortable, that's the last thing I want."

"It's fine." You reassured him, trying to catch your breath, stomach hurting from laughing so hard. “But what's with the pizza pick-up lines?”

"That was ridiculous, wasn't it?" He whimpered, slapping his forehead. “Sorry, I didn't mean it... Well, I did mean it, but not at all like that. I just wanted to get to know you better, but I didn't know exactly how to do that. I asked Seungmin for help and-“

“That was a terrible idea.” You stated, smiling gently.

"Now I know that." He whined. "He said it would be cool if I used pick-ups that involved pizza, 'cause... you know, I deliver pizzas." He rolled his eyes.

“You know, you could have just asked me out.” You teased softly.

"Sorry for hurting your ears with those stupid lines." He looked down, embarrassed, avoiding your gaze at all costs.

"Okay, I forgive you, but only if you accept to share this pizza with me." Despite your bold words, your heart felt like it was about to burst. "I-I think this is a little too big for me."

You scanned his face, trying to decipher what was going through his head. Nevertheless, all your insecurity and uncertainty instantly disappeared as his lips parted in a wide smile.

"There's nothing in the world that I want more than this." He finally said, eyes brighter than all the stars in the sky. "You know, I think you're a pizza, because I have this huge crust on you."

“Jisung, please. Just shut up.”

"Yes, ma'am. You don't have to say it twice.” He smirked playfully, a teasing gleam in his eyes. "But you wanna hear a joke about pizza?"

"Han Jisung..."

"Nevermind, it’s too cheesy."
