High School Women - Aspirations In Computing Award

Due November 7th!

High school women, check out the questions for the NCWIT Aspirations In Computing award, your qualification may surprise you! Seriously gals, apply. You will get internships/ job shadowing opportunities, access to college $$$ and most importantly meet peers with similar interests. This award made me look at computer science as a serious major, awarded me a new iPad and CAD software, gave me the opportunity to visit the white house to advocate for project based learning during a Champions of Change Event and encouraged me to attend Grace Hopper Computing Conference. At least look at the questions because you qualify more than you think, I promise. I talked on WDIO's Good Morning Northland about NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award for high school women which may provide some insight. Teachers, relatives and friends of HS women, please encourage them to apply.

NASA Co-Op Week 11: Leaky Space Station

Space Walk My latest opportunity to sit console was during a spacewalk (extravehicular activity/ EVA) by Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren. They were on a mission to upkeep the International Space Station's ailing structures. One of the primary tasks was to fix an ammonia leak originally identified in 2012. Media dressed this leak up with red flags and flashing lights, however, NASA predicted this fault to occur given the age of ISS and the nature of its climate control system. Since the ISS is a closed loop system the interior produces a lot of heat from astronauts and their hardware, water is used to cool the space station, the energy is then transferred to ammonia, and lastly into giant radiators. This 6.5 hour long EVA consisted of mating power cables, tubes valves, and checking integrity of systems. During the EVA I took flight notes on the procedures Scott and Kjell were running. I was to report what step each of them were on to the PLUTO flight controller to my right.

Grace Hopper Action Items Something that was scary but rewarding was presenting to my branch at NASA about what I learned at GHC and even challenged them with three action items... 1)Make the work place welcoming (paid parent leave, mentoring and celebrating results over hours), 2) Educating the community about how cool STEM is. 3) Communicating Effectively. I encourage you all to present action items to your current employers, student group, or college professionals after attending conferences.

Astronaut Training Development I thought I had made a pretty good astronaut training video... until I put it in front of user testers. I learned I didn't even effectively communicate how to turn the device on right! Back to the drawing board for me. I had 17 users of various ages, disciplines, personalities and technology experience test the training to insure I was catering to everyone. After reviewing helpful feedback I edited the training video again so the messages were clearer.

Grace Hopper Wrap Up: More Than Tech Swag

Hypocritically I have been posting pictures of all the neat swag collected at Grace Hopper Computing Conference (GHC) with just as much gusto as posting all that I have learned at the conference. GHC is so much more than swag - a unique conglomeration of ideas, tech unicorns and what is considered a rare commodity in industry, women. Here I share the coolest thing I learned about, how to make work welcoming to everyone, and final thoughts on GHC.

Robot Human Collaboration

Autonomous paints a picture of a robot working on its own driving, building products or even fetching coffee. Why should a robot be expected to complete a task on its own when we ask others for help all the time? With similar thinking Carnegie Mellon University has developed collaborative robots called CoBot complete tasks be asking humans and other robots for assistance. CoBot rolls around the halls of the computer science department, with the offices layout memorized. COBOT can escort a human to a professor's office pressing buttons on the elevator and letting COBOT know when its on the correct floor. A CoBot that is instructed to go to a professors' office upstairs can be alerted by another CoBot that the professor is currently out of office. Watch the CoBot's artificial intelligence work in action.

Make Work Welcoming

You may expect the nailing of 95 thesis by women of the tech industry explaining how work can be welcoming. Honestly making the work environment welcoming to everyone is pretty simple. There are probably more but here are the top three most focused on.

1) Celebrate Results And Not Hours - America is prideful of long hours and drinking lots of Starbucks. However, long hours doesn't necessarily efficient. Reward your employees and team mates for successes. be mindful that their hours fluctuate dues to personal matters and simply having a life outside of work.

2) Paid Parent Leave - Who doesn't want to spend time with their kid? This improvement is a no-brainer.

3) Mentorship - Talent can be retained in a company by providing mentorship all throughout your career. People oriented and extroverted individuals may seek mentors naturally as well as seek to mentor others. As team and project leaders encourage those who may not

Final Thoughts on Grace Hopper Conference

Visually I could not imagine the support and number of women in technology at this conference. There were 12,000 women including a collection of engineers, software designers, project managers, CEOs, CTOs, start up leaders, programmers, and much more. GHC's majority is easily the minority and industry so solutions to solve this disparity were found. One solution discussed at GHC that show immediate impact includes showing others how fun technology can be through mentorship, hosting coding camps, visiting past schools to talk to current students, and holding maker challenges. Physically sitting down with someone and spending time to share a piece of the world of technology with them means so much more than any tweet, post and plea of advocacy. GET ACTIVE!

Well that solves the pipeline problem but retaining those interested in tech in tech roles can be achieved by making the work environments welcoming as shown above. When receiving my swag bag day one at GHC I pulled out a smart phone accessory with the Go Daddy logo on it thinking, "What on Earth is that company doing in my Grace Hopper bag?". A question backed by series of not so appealing ads. This question answered after Go Daddy CEO apologized for the companies actions and showed data on how they are improving company culture, Maybe this demonstration was a little clunky but still an attempt to right wrong, expose companies short comings, and move forward. Having conversations, coming up with solutions and following through is what it is all about.

Conference content wise I personally wish I attended more technical related talks as opposed to soft skill and leadership related talks. I found myself getting my tech fix by visiting the career fair booths with coding challenges. Yes, I am an Amazon Code ninja who now understands the magic of a static variable, inheritance rules and function following. Also fellow coders and I solved Best Buy's parsing challenge as well as finding all of the wrong answers. I consider attending GHC again in the future and bringing some more Minnesotans along with me.

Jim Hopper SFW alphabet <3

Side note: sorry I haven't posted in a while. Feel free to leave requests in my ask box! (I'm not doing any NSFW at the moment, so anything like that may take longer!)

Dedicated to: @parvulous-writings love ya to bits.

Jim Hopper SFW Alphabet

[Not my gif]

A - Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

Hopper will only show true affection when the two of you are alone. Sure, he may put an arm around you or give you a quick kiss in public, but he never does anything over the top, or major.

B - Best Friend (What would they be like as a best friend? Where does the friendship start?)

Hopper is the kind of friend that would try and protect you at all costs if you were very close, but you'd also have to remind him to take a little bit of time for himself as well.

C - Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

Hopper actuality loves cuddling. Again, only when the two of you are alone. He won't admit it, but you cuddling up to him on he sofa is one of the best feelings in the world. He adores settling down with you with a bag of popcorn and a movie.

D - Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking, cleaning, ect?)

Hopper can cook basic things. He can't cook you a full three course meal, but he can make simple things like breakfast. As for cleaning, he only cleans when he feels like cleaning. He doesn't live in his own mess, but he doesn't clean every day either.

E - Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

If he had to end it, most likely he'd be rather blunt about it. Well, he'd try to show emotion, but he wouldn't let you down slowly either. He'd hope the two of you can still be friends, even after the breakup.

F - Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? Do they wanna get married?)

In all honesty, he's a little reluctant to anything like that. He'd be a little scared to commit to something, and probably wouldn't find himself proposing. If you proposed, he'd tell you that he needs a few days to think about it first.

G - Gentle (How gentle are they both physically and emotionally?)

He's only properly gentle when he knows the cause of your distress is him. He will obviously try and comfort you when you are upset for another reason, but when it's him.. he lets that really sink in. Then he feels guilty. And he will make a whole speech of an apology for you.

H - Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it, and what are they like?)

He doesn't hug you that much. Again, he will be down for cuddles on the sofa, but hugs just feel too short... too pointless, for him.

I - I Love You (How fast do they say the “love” word?)

Slowly. It takes him a while to even warm uo to you, the man has a whole facade around him, but when he finally begins to trust you... he will say the 'L' word. Give him time.

J - Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What are they like when jealous?)

Hopper isn't usually the jealous type, but if he sees someone else getting a little too up close and personal with you, or cive versa, he certainly won't be happy. He'll probably kiss you and get grabby with you to make a point, and then take you home, apologise, and cuddle on the sofa.

K - Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

Hopper's kisses are usually brief- and again, he will only give proper kisses when you're alone. He'll kiss you goodbye at the door, on the cheek, but in the heat of passion he will kiss you on the lips.

L - Little Ones (How are they around kids?)

He's... 50/50 when it comes to kids. Sometimes he can be the most loving, affectionate father you have ever seen. Others... not so much. He simply doesn't know how to properly care and nurture a child, especially young ones. If they aren't doing what they are told, he may try to resort to yelling to get his point across.

M - Morning (What are mornings like with them?)

On weekdays, when Hopper is working, he will usually get up early and be out of the house before you wake. He will leave you breakfast on the table though, that sometimes comes with a little note of affection. On weekends, mornings are... slow. And affectionate. You will both warm each other up because you are so close together, and it will sometimes last a few hours before one of you has to get up thanks to hunger.

N - Nights (How are nights spent with them?)

Nights are usually just the two of you waiting to see which of you will go to sleep first. Eventually though, he will turn out the lights and pull you into his chest as you doze off together.

O - Open (When do they open up about themselves?)

Only in arguments or quiet moments when you are opening up to him. Out of the anger of an argument, he will begin to tell you random bits about his life that he regrets later.

P - Patience (How easily angered are they?)

Very easily. This man's fuse is very low. If something doesn't quite go his way, he will be grumpy, and if that continues, he will become snappy and shouty.

Q - Quizzes (How much do they remember about you?)

He remebers what he needs to. You know, your birthday, your anniversary, ect, but occasionally you will tell him something and he will forget for the longest time, but when something regarding that topic comes back up again, he will remember.

R - Remember (Favorite memory with you?)

Probably when the two of you had your first proper date. It was actually on the sofa, you in his arms, a movie on the screen as you fed each other popcorn.

S - Security (How protective are they?)

Very protective. Someone threatens you? They're done. Someone hurts you? They're practically dead.

T - Try (How much effort do they put in?)

He does try. He really, really does. He wants to be better, for you. But he finds it so difficult. No matter how many times he asks someone how to be... affectionate, like a normal person would, he can't seem to wrap his head around it. At all.

U - Ugly (What are their bad habits?)

Smoking, drinking. He smokes a lot. Especially after a long day of work.

V - Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

He isn't overly concerned. He knows he looks good in whatever he wears, so he wears whatever is at hand. Of course, he does have some fashion sense. He won't go out wearing colours that contradict each other.

W- Whole. (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

He won't admit it, but... yes. He would. He'd miss you to pieces, but he won't ever talk about it. Not even to himself.

X - Xtra (Random HC)

The two of you once went rowing together. It was rather romantic, until he leaned in for a kiss and the both of you fell in the river. At first, he was pretty mad at himself, but then you seemed to be laughing, and so he did too. It was a fun night.

Y - Yuck (Things they don’t like either in general or a partner?)

Cocky or persistent people. That's it. They just... anger him.

Z - Zzz (Sleep habits)

He doesn't really have a sleep schedule. He'll sleep when he feels like it. When he does sleep, it's very difficult to wake him back up again. He'll also use you as a teddy bear.
