Ooh! This is giving me an art idea!
Attention artists drawing Chanukah art! (Because I've seen wayyy too many incorrect depictions)
-The Shamash (the ninth candle, usually in the center or off to the side of a Chanukiyah (Chanukah menorah)) is used to light the other candles. It is lit first, and is the helper candle. It's not part of the lineup.
-The flames are lit from left to right, starting with the candle/oil well representing the current night. For example:
If this is the first night: _ _ _ _ _ _ _🕯️
And this is the third night: _ _ _ _ _ 🕯️🕯️🕯️
You would start by lighting the candle to the leftmost on the third night, and then move gradually to the right.
-The flames are supposed to be kept burning until they burn out. You don't reuse candles from the night before under ideal conditions (ideal being able to afford candles, etc).
-You can't use the candles on the Chanukiyah lineup to light other candles. That's what the Shamash candle is for. You're not supposed to use the Chanukiyah flames for anything.
