MC Twin AU - CALEB'S Spitfire [Caleb]
Unknown to [Name], their first meeting was not at Josephine's place. It was actually at a party.
He was invited to a huge party by his friend, who had been invited by his cousin. So it was like a friend knew a friend who knew a friend kind of invite.
He was calmly sipping some beer from his cup when he saw her. Giggling next to a few others with a wide smile on her face. His first thought was 'What's she doing here!? She should be at home studying for her exam!'
But then he focused on her and noticed no - that wasn't MC. They looked too different.
There was a small mole on this girl's neck, she was wearing a different color palette that MC never really wore, huge hoop earrings, the type MC had said she didn't like were hanging and shaking from her ear lobes.
So, who was this girl?
"Who are you checking out bro?" His friend slapped his arm making Caleb roll his eyes. He followed Caleb's gaze and let out a low whistle. "Oh damn! You sure have taste bro!"
"Shut up." He grumbled, taking another sip of his beer. He watched as she laughed, leaning against her friends and inhaling the drink in her cup. "Do you know who she is?"
"Hmmm." His friend narrowed his eyes. "I think. . . . I think that's [Name]. She's one of Ama's friends."
So her name was [Name]. . . . Why did she look so much like MC?
It wasn't until a few years later that he realized why. They were twins, lost ones. So while MC had been part of the experiments, [Name] had been lucky enough to not get captured and live her life out normally.
When he had introduced himself and shook her hand, more differences popped up in his mind. While MC had a few scars and calluses from being a Hunter, [Name]'s hand was smooth and a hint smaller than hers. He watched as she smacked MC and laughed at her silly quips.
He watched as she devoured the food he had prepared, and was inwardly surprised at the nickname that slipped out of his mouth. Spitfire, matching her fierce personality. She seemed to like it as well with the way her lips quirked up.
It wasn't hard to ask MC for her contact, but Caleb had to play fight with MC when she stared to tease him. "You likkkeeee heerrrr~"
"I didn't say that."
"Caleb and [Name] sitting in a tree. K - I - S - S - I - N - G!"
"Why you little -!"
But the thing was, Caleb did like [Name]. He liked her funny jokes. He liked the way her eyebrow would twitch with badly hidden rage whenever she couldn't get the plush she wanted. He liked her triumphant cackle whenever she won a round of Kitty Cards. He liked the way she dropped everything whenever MC or anyone else she cared about needed help. He liked the way her eyes lit up whenever she was talking about her special interests. He liked the way she seemed to glow when she was simply happy.
But when she started to avoid him, his mind seemed to crack. What did he do wrong? Did he push too far? What could he do to fix things?
Caleb tried asking MC, but all she said was "Girl code, but it's not you. Just. . . . give her a bit."
So he waited, he waited patiently.
And the end results was worth it.
"I'm not her you know." [Name] tells him after months, sadness in her eyes. "We might look identical, but I'm not, and will never be her."
And suddenly, Caleb understood everything. So what if she wasn't MC? Why would that matter? [Name] was [Name], and that was all that mattered.
So with a blissful smile, Caleb dragged her into a hug. "Of course you're not MC. You're my little spitfire, and I couldn't have it any other way."
When they officially started dating, it took every restraint in Caleb's body to not simply take her away. Because she wasn't a Hunter, a mere civilian. She could get hurt.
And since he wasn't always at Linkon, he couldn't protect her.
Whenever he brought up the idea of moving with him, he would notice the way her eyes lit up at the idea, but each time she refused, saying she still has a job here.
What a stupid reason, but a reason Caleb would accept. He would enjoy the moments he could have with her in Linkon. The dates, the kisses, the moments underneath the covers where he could see the most exquisite expression on her face.
When the explosion occurs, and Josephine finally dies, the only thing keeping him from rushing over to take [Name] away was his promise to MC. He would protect her, the same way she had protected him, even if she didn't remember.
When he could finally snatch [Name] away, he sends her a text. Some part of him was worried that she wouldn't take it seriously, that she would think it was a fake and ignore it. But he watched from his monitors with a triumphant smile as she merely removed her earphones, and walked towards the car.
When she arrived at the airport, he easily accepted the slap she laid on his face, and allowed her to drag him down to her level. Caleb merely cupped her face and leaned his forehead on her own, a small smile on his face. She was here, she was here, with him.
That was really all that mattered.
He accepts her anger and tears when he takes her back to his home, and he groans when he finally kisses her again after months of patiently waiting.
Now. Now she was here with him.
When she sleeps, Caleb sits up from his bed and takes her phone, easily unlocking it and scrolling through her messages. It seemed to be the usual thing, texts from MC, texts from her coworkers and friends. Her games, her emails.
Everything was the way he had left it.
Good. It's a pity she wouldn't be needing it anymore. He turned off the phone and placed where she couldn't find it, wrapped his arms around her waist, and went to sleep.
The next day, he turns and presses a kiss on her lips and plates out some pancakes, her absolute favorite. When she asks about her phone, a frown (not that she could see it) forms on his face. "I'll get you a new one"
He hears her pause, chewing faster. "What do you mean by that?"
"I'm keeping your phone hostage."
"Why?"
He gives her a gentle smile. "You don't need that phone anymore, trust me, spitfire."
Caleb didn't want to have to explain anything, because she could get hurt. So he only gave her the tip of the iceberg, asking her if MC told her anything, and offhandedly mentions that someone was stalking her because of her relationship with MC.
He watches as she groans with annoyance, a hint of something he couldn't recognize flashing in her eyes before she laid her head on his chest. ". . . . I'll trust you." She mumbles, and Caleb preens with joy. "But! I want a phone damn it! How will I contact work?! And MC!?"
He bites back the urge to say she doesn't need them anymore. He could just stay with him here, he would be the breadwinner, he could provide for her, spoil her. But he doesn't, because even though he's 99% sure she wouldn't be against that, she would go stir crazy and probably do something dumb, putting her in even more danger.
So he simply kisses her again, wrapping his arms around her. He would protect her in his own way, whether she knew about it or not.
As long as she was safe then that's all that mattered.
I know I said this was the last part, but I lied. There's one more part, but it's an 18+ Part!!!! So ONLY READ IF YOU'RE 18!

MC Twin AU - CALEB'S Spitfire [5]
You stare at Caleb's back as he continues to calmly make more pancakes for the both of you and then you place your fork down, a small smile on your face. "Babe."
"Yeah, spitfire?"
"Give me back my phone."
"No can do."
"I will shove you into traffic."
Caleb turns his head to shoot an amused smile at you. "Spitfire is that the only threat you know? What about shooting me? Or what about stabbing me in my sleep? You know, black widow style."
Your fork is thrown at his head but is easily stopped with his Evol. "Well, that wasn't very nice was it?"
"I willingly allow you to kidnap me." you hiss, glaring at his back as Caleb turns his attention back to the pan. "I'm even fine with staying here for a while. But. You. Took. My. Phone." You raise your hand in frustration. "I'm not even hiding anything that can be 'dangerous', so what's the big deal!?
Look, you were fine with the whole 'yandere' thing going on with Caleb because, well, he wasn't even that bad!But him taking your phone?? With all your games??
Abso-lute-ly not!
"Is it truly a kidnapping if you give consent?" Caleb mused, picking up your plate to add more pancakes. "Look spitfire, do you know anything about. . . . what happened to MC? And her heart condition?"
You pause, and furrow your brows. Well, seeing that you were once MC, you knew practically everything about her. But you couldn't just say that could you? So you raise a brow at him and allow familiar words to flow out of your mouth. "No not really. She didn't tell me anything, even when I asked "
Caleb sighs and presses a kiss on your forehead. "Then I can't really say much, if she even truly understands what really happened herself." He places his hands on the counter behind you, caging you in. "A few people are keeping an eye on MC, dangerous people. And since you're her sister, they have started to keep an eye on you as well."
You furrow your brow. "What the fuck does that mean-" you pause, blinking as a memory flashed through your mind. Someone watching MC? Her hidden past? Her heart condition?
Was Caleb talking about Ever?!
Oh gosh darn it. It all made sense now. You let out a loud groan and lean your head forward on his chest. "Explain."
You feel Caleb hum and he places a kiss on your forehead again. "I can't say much, mainly because the more you know, the more the risk of these people finding you rises. Still -" he cups your face, raising your head so you could meet his gaze. "- everything I'm doing, it's all to protect you spitfire. [Name], I know with me faking my death, you might not trust me, but for this one thing, will you place your trust in me once again?"
Oh this silly boy. This silly silly boy. You let out a sigh and lean against his palm, closing your eyes. It wasn't like you didn't understand the situation. Ever was a group that was everywhere, every Love Interest was connected in some way, even if it was minimum. From Zayne and Xander Sciences, the N109 Zone turning into a wasteland because of them as Sylus had hinted, Rafayel and The Nest, and Xaiver's collar.
Ever was everywhere.
Which was why you knew to take Caleb's words seriously. You had no interest in trying to discover their secrets, you didn't even have the power to fight them.
So did that mean all you could do was sit idly by? Unfortunately, yes. You weren't the MC, you were simply. . . . You.
And for the first time in a very long time, the fact that because you were a simple NPC hurt your heart.
You sighed again and hugged Caleb tightly, pressing your face against his chest. ". . . I'll trust you." You mumble. "I think I'm incapable of never not trusting you."
"Haha. I'm glad-"
"But." You hiss, raising your head to glare up at him. "I want a phone. I get it, stalkers are stalking my phone, but I want a phone damn it! How will I contact work!? And MC!?"
A smile blooms on Caleb's face, and he leans down to nuzzle his nose against your own. "Hmm. Don't worry, I already have a phone waiting for you, with all your games and work stuff saved."
"Oh! In that case, I want more pancakes."
Caleb laughs and presses a kiss against your lips, and the tension that has been hanging in the room finally broke. You watched as he moved back to the stove, pouring the batter into the heated pan.
So, life was about to be hectic for you. Your boyfriend essentially kidnapped and took your phone, Ever may or not be watching you, and since Caleb was a Colonel now, that meant KC would be in Skyhaven soon.
All those manhwa's you read in the past were right. Involving yourself with the main lead and one of the love interests would drag you into a mess.
Well, with a boyfriend like Caleb? Could you really regret it?
. . . No. Not at all.
One more Part to this, Caleb! Where you'll see the whole relationship through the eyes of Caleb himself ~
Sorry it's late gang, college has been a pain in the ASSSSSS but I hope you enjoy this!!!!

MC Twin AU - CALEB'S Spitfire [4]
When you arrive at the airport, just as the text stated, Caleb was there.
He had his hat on, his very familiar (to you at least, but you suppose you had to act like this was new to you) Colonel's attire, and sleek black gloves on his hands. Ignoring the driver as he opened the door for you, you accepted your handbag and marched over to your purple eyed boyfriend.
You wanted to kiss him. You wanted to push him into an empty room and tear off his clothes.
But the only thing you could do as you finally got close to him, was place your bag down and slap him across the face.
His cheek grew red from the impact, but he barely made a sound. "Months." You start, gripping the front of his suit to drag him down to your level. "Months have gone by when I thought you were fucking dead. And suddenly you send me a text and I see you're alive!? What the absolute fuck Caleb!?"
Your grip tightens on his suit, and you glare up at him even as he cups your cheeks with his gloved hand, resting his forehead against yours. "I'm sorry." He says, and you glare even harder.
"I'm going to punch you."
"Go ahead. Punch me as much as you want spitfire." He rubs your cheek gently, a soft smile on his face. "I'm just glad you're ok and here, with me."
"Stop agreeing with me and being so sappy you bastard!" You snap, struggling in his hold as he drags you into a hug. "Ugh! Lemme go!"
He chuckled softly, placing a kiss on the top of your head. "You can yell at me all you want spitfire, but not here. As much as I want you to, I am still the Colonel, and many eyes are still watching me."
You huff again but relax, realizing he was right. This wasn't the time nor place to beat him up. "Whatever. There better be food on the plane."
"Only the best for you."
When you arrive at his place, you drop your bag on his couch and move to where you assumed his kitchen was, using your limited understanding of playing his Myths and Cards in the game to help guide you. "I'm still mad at you." you begin, watching as the cabinet opens and a glass flies into your hand. You turn around to see a bottle of orange juice open by itself, then tilt as the liquid poured into your cup. Stupid Caleb and his stupid Evol and his stupid understanding of what you wanted. How can you be mad at him when he does cute shit like this!?
"So." You turn around to face him, gulping down your drink so you can distract your mind. "Wanna explain how you're alive!?" You slam the cup down on the counter table, anger making your blood boil. You don't know why you were so angry, you knew he was alive. you knew he was fine. Still. . . . still . . . . what if you dating him made things worse? What if he actually got hurt!?
Tears suddenly dripped out of your eyes as you helplessly stared at him. "You . . . you died Caleb! You died and you left me behind! What is wrong with you!?"
"I had to act like I was semi-ok in front of MC! She was devastated! She lost her best friend, and I lost my boyfriend, yet here you are fucking alive!?"
You close your eyes as you try and wipe your tears away, not noticing him walking towards you until you feel his arms wrap around you. "I'm sorry," he mumbled, rubbing your back gently as you continued to cry. "I can't tell you why I left, because it's related to. . . . well a lot of things, but I want you to know, that each time I closed my eyes, each time I woke up, each time I went down to the Deepspace Tunnel, you were on my mind spitfire." He kisses your head, breathing in deeply. "I've missed you so much spitfire, and this time I promise nothing, and I mean nothing will drive us apart again."
"I will never let you go."
You sniffled and shoved your face deeper into his chest, choosing to remain silent in the meantime as you continued to sob. After a few minutes though, a small sigh escapes your lips. "If you pull a stunt like this again, I will kill you myself."
A fond chuckle leaves his lips, and he pushes you away gently so he can cup your cheeks. "Noted," he murmured, then pressed his lips against yours, your first kiss after months of being apart.
When you woke up the next day, it was to the smell of pancakes. Grumbling under your breath, you pick up your shirt and place it on, waddling over to the kitchen to see Caleb by the stove pouring more batter into the frying pan, a plate of perfectly cooked pancakes on the side. You pick up the fork and begin to dig in, humming at the taste. "Good to know that your dying didn't take away your skill of cooking."
"I practiced extra harder for you spitfire." Caleb leaned towards you to press a small kiss on your cheek. "Eat up, you're going to need all the energy you can get."
"Yeah yeah..." you mumble, shoving more food in your mouth. "Oh hey, where's my phone? It should have woken me up with my alarm."
Caleb turns back to the stove. "I'll get you a new one."
You pause your chewing, quickly swallowing it so you can talk clearly. "What do you mean by that?"
"I'm keeping your phone hostage."
"Why?"
He turns his head to give you a gentle smile, though his eyes have darkened. "You don't need that phone anymore, trust me, spitfire."
Ok, what the fuck?!

MC Twin AU - CALEB'S Spitfire [3]
Caleb kisses like a god.
His hands wrap around your waist firmly as his lips slide against your own, his tongue forces itself into your mouth making you blush heavily but moan softly.
Holy shit this man was wonderful at kissing! Though you couldn't help but feel a flare of jealousy rise up at the thought of him kissing other people. So you ask him, and he laughs with pure amusement. "Don't worry spitfire. You're my first and only."
If someone asks if your heart had started to beat faster at his words, you would push them into traffic.
When your sister had found out about your relationship, she had sighed and rubbed her forehead. "I owe Zayne so much money now."
"You betted against me!??"
"Well duh. Caleb literally liked, no, adored you! The only person who couldn't see it was you!"
You stared at her with confusion, nervously fiddling with your hands. "But. . . . . Aren't you mad? I thought you liked Caleb?"
A gentle smile bloomed on your sister's face and she leaned against you body, placing her head on your shoulder. "Caleb is my best friend. Nothing more alright? I'm really happy for you two! But...."
You freeze. "But what...?"
"If he hurts you and makes you cry. Best friend or not I will push him into incoming traffic."
A startled laugh escapes your lips. "Are you stealing my threats?"
MC shrugged. "They work perfectly fine."
"Make your own threats! Only I can push people into traffic!"
"Nuh uh."
"Yah uh!"
As days went by and Caleb continued to shower you with affection, and MC continued to giggle and tease the two of you, your guards began to slowly break and crumble down. Ok, you weren't the MC, but he still liked you! That was. . . . .that was amazing!
Every now and then you couldn't help but break out into giggles at the reminder that Caleb liked you. Not her, but you.
She could keep the other men, you wanted your red flag boyfriend!
Though, it might not just be him that's a red flag. You might be one as well? Did that bother you? A bit yes, but Caleb seemed to enjoy it a lot.
It happened on a typical winter day, the cold air making you shiver as you walked side by side with Caleb, who finally got some time off to visit you. He quickly wrapped his arms around your shoulder and dragged you closer to his warm body, making you smile. "You cold spitfire?"
"I hate winter." You mumble, pouting when you felt his chuckle. "Stop laughing at me or I won't kiss you ever again!"
"Oh nooo, can you ever forgive me?" He places a kiss on your forehead, and your face grows hot. "Look, we're at the cafe now. Let's head in and get you something warm." He guides you towards Destiny Cafe (when you realized the name, you had begun to cackle like a madwoman. So Destiny Cafe existed here and wasn't just a game mechanic!) and pushed the door open, the warm air making you let out a sigh of relief. "Good yeah?"
"Hmmmmm..." You hum, allowing him to guide your body to a seat. He ruffles your hair and sits across you, placing his chin on his palm as he gazes at you with so much affection that your face heats up even more. "What? What's on my face?"
"Beauty." He murmurs, and you squeak. "Pure beauty-"
"Hi! Welcome to Destiny Cafe! May I take your order?"
The moment is ruined by a high perky voice, and you turn your gaze to stare at a young girl with a huge smile on her face. She stares and Caleb and tucks some of her hair behind her ear, fluttering her eyebrows at him. "I'll be your server today, my name is May. So, may I take your order?"
Caleb turns to meet your gaze. "What would you like spitfire?"
You meet May's annoyed gaze head on and a small satisfied smirk forms on your lips. "Just some hot chocolate, that's all."
"I'll have the same." Caleb looks at May making her bloom. "Of course! I'll be right back!" She smiles at him and walks away, and your eyes catch the way her hips swayed with her movement, making your eye twitch.
When she finally is gone from your sight, you turn your gaze to Caleb and get up, pushing him to the edge of the booth so you could sit next to him. You drag him down by the back of his head into a kiss, and bite down on his lip, smiling when a bit of blood hits your taste buds. You know you shouldn't be jealous, Caleb had said time and time again that he liked you. But. . . . but you couldn't just help yourself.
"S-Spitfire-"
You snap back to reality and push him away, your face red. "Oh my goodness I'm so sorry! Did I bite you too hard!? Holy shit I don't know what got over me!"
You watch as he uses his thumb to wipe away some of the blood away from his lips, a smile on his face. "It's fine it's fine! In fact, I enjoyed it very much."
. . . . . Was he a masochist or something!?
You shouldn't be surprised though, this was Caleb you were talking about. Still, you dart you gaze away and mumble out a "Sorry..."
A hand cups your cheeks, and Caleb lifts your head to stare at him. "I said it's fine spitfire, really!" He leans down to kiss you himself, and your cheeks heat up as one of his hands moves down to slip underneath your skirt. The only reason why the two of you part away is because you hear footsteps come towards your booth. Still, you make sure you place a small kiss on your neck, your lipstick leaving a stain very visible on his skin.
You watch as May glances at your flushed faces, and at the lipstick mark on Caleb's neck, and your heart thrums with pride at the small scowl that she wasn't quick enough to wipe away. "Here are your drinks, enjoy yourself!" She says, then rushes away.
As the two of you eventually leave the cafe, you notice that Caleb wasn't wearing his scarf anymore. "Aren't you cold Mr Pilot?" You question, raising a brow at him as you walk together hand in hand.
He gives you a smirk and point at the lipstick stain. "I want everyone to see this. To show who my girlfriend is."
Your face heats up again, and you jerk your head away. Still, a small smile forms on your lips at his words. Oh goodness, you weren't going to let this boy leave.
Even when he fakes his death and becomes Colonel, you would find him and keep him by your side.
Many. . . . Ok only a few months to be honest, pass by, and the infamous explosion happens. You move in with MC finally, mainly to make sure she doesn't do anything stupid, and mainly because even when you knew he was alive, you missed Caleb, and she was the only one who understood your pain.
You stared at your phone every day, hoping that he would send an impromptu text, a 'Hey spitfire! I'm alive! Come find me :D'
But nothing. Nothing pops up.
One day after work though, you stroll around the city in the dark, one headphone in your ear and your phone in your hand. A sudden notification freezes you, and after a few seconds of silence, you rush to follow it's instructions.
"Spitfire, five blocks ahead of you, there's a black car with the license plate 367 LKN. Get in, and when you arrive at the airport, I'll be there waiting for you. Don't be late.

MC Twin AU - CALEB'S Spitfire [2]
Caleb was weird.
Not weird as in 'I wanna lock you away from the world.' you actually found that very normal and very, very hot. What the said about you meant nothing, there was a reason you picked him out of all the other options.
No, Caleb was acting weird because he was focusing on you. He had apparently asked for your number from MC, which she had gladly given him, and you had woken up to the sight of an unknown number sending you a good morning text.
"Rise and shine spitfire! You gotta get to work soon 🫵"
You had blinked, then pinched your cheek just to make sure you weren't hallucinating. Seeing that it hurt a lot, you were clearly awake.
"Um, Caleb?"
"😉 One and only"
"Well technically there are many other Caleb's in the world ya know"
" :( well the only Caleb who's food you enjoy a lot"
". . . . damm"
"lol why did you do the ...?"
"dramatic effect. anywho how did you get my number?"
"MC gave me. Now! I'll talk to you later 🫵Get ready for work!"
Caleb was weird because on a sunny Friday afternoon, right after your dentist appointment, you found him leaning against your car scrolling on his phone. You had paused, stared at him, then let out a long sigh. It was best to not dwell on how he knew where you were. Normally you would have said MC told him, but you hadn't told her that your appointment was today.
So yeah. Caleb was weird.
As you approached him, he finally looked up and gave you a wide smile that made your heart flutter. "Hey there spitfire!" He greeted, placing his phone in his pocket and straightening up.
You raise a brow and cross your arms over your chest. "Are you here to steal my car?"
"Precisely." He bobbed your nose making you let out a squawk of bafflement. "MC needs to be picked up and I unfortunately have my car in the shop, soo I was wondering if I could use yours?"
You tap your foot on the pavement. "And how did you know where I was?"
Caleb blinks and brings out his phone, turning it around to show you the screen. "You posted it on your Moments."
. . . . Ah. You did. A long sigh leaves your lips and you turn to walk to the driver's seat. "Get in. And in return, you're getting me mochi."
"Roger that!"
Caleb was weird, because he invited you out once to play Kitty Cards together. No MC, no other friends, just you and him.
You narrow your eyes at him over the rim of your cards, and he smiles innocently at you. "You knowww, I can give you some of my cards-"
"I'll bite you!"
"Ohhh kink-"
"Caleb!"
He laughs, purple eyes sparkling with mirth, and your heart flutters, making you duck your head to hide your blush. No, no you couldn't feel anything for him. This was wrong!
You weren't MC. You weren't the girl that helped him in the labs, and you weren't the girl he dedicated his entire existence for.
You were simply. . . . You.
Caleb was weird, because even when you started to try and distance yourself from him, he kept bothering you. Even when you ignored his calls, ran away with an excuse whenever he was with MC, pretended he didn't exist and hid when you saw him in the wild, he still didn't let you go.
Everywhere you went, he knew.
At MC? He knew.
At work? He knew.
Watching movies at home? He sent you reminders to go to bed early.
At work? Somehow food delivery is being sent to your office.
Caleb was weird.
"I'm not her you know." You tell him after months of ignoring him, months of him chasing you, lurking behind you like a shadow. "We might look identical, but I'm not, and will never be her."
Why couldn't he get it through his thick skull! You weren't MC, you were You!
Caleb was weird, because he simply smiled and dragged you into a hug, placing his chin on the top of your head. "Of course you're not MC." He said with ease. "You're my little spitfire, and I couldn't have it any other way."
Your face grew beet red, and your heart pounded loudly in your ears. Caleb was so fucking weird, because he called you his.

MC TWIN AU - CALEB's Spitfire.
It took a lot of begging, a lot of pouting, and a lot of bribery, but eventually you agreed to follow MC to her grandma's house.
"My friend Caleb will be there with us today!" She said excitedly as you drove, following the instructions of the GPS and MC's memory.
You hands clenched on the steering wheel, but you force a grin to form on your lips. "Oh? Caleb hm? That's the uhh the pilot guy right?'
MC nods, her eyes flashing with excitement. "Yep, that's him. I don't see him often since he lives in Skyhaven now, so I really want you two to meet! I'm sure you'll love him."
Oh, you had no doubt in your mind that you'll love him. After all, he was the love interest you went after back on Earth!
Hours of grinding, hours of listening to secret times, hours of kitty cards and claw machines. Even when the whole fandom hated him for being MC's 'brother', you were his biggest fan.
Maybe it was because out of all the other love interests who saw their first love in MC, this MC was Caleb's first and only MC. That was what made him win among all the others.
So you gave your sister a gentle smile and reached over to ruffle her hair. "Hmm, I'm sure he's a great guy with all the stories you tell me." You hummed, laughing as she tried to hit you for messing with her hair. "Hey hey hey! Don't disturb the driver ok! Watch it!"
When the two of you arrived, MC bounced over to the door as you slowly trailed behind her, nervously fiddling with your hands. It's ok, it will be ok. You've been through worse! You've been through an entire pandemic! You shouldn't be this scared.
You watched as the door opened and a familiar boy, well, man would be the best word no? stepped out and pulled MC into a hug, and you quickly stomped on the green monster called jealousy that threatened to claw itself out, and continued to merely watch as the two childhood friends reunited. MC finally pushed him away and turned to look back at you. "Come on!" She gestured, making you let out a small sigh, steel your nerves, and walk up towards the house, ignoring the stare he placed on you. She grabbed your hands and smiled up at him. "Caleb, this is the girl I told you about. My twin! We did blood tests and everything! [Name], this annoying piece of sh-"
"Whoah now pipsqueak. Is that how you introduce me to your friends?" He interrupted, raising a brow and crossing his arms over his chest. He let out a sigh and tutted. "I'm hurt!"
MC poked her tongue out at him. "Bleh!'
'Bleh!"
You could only watch with a sweatdrop. "Um, hi?'
Purple eyes snapped towards you, and a gentle smile formed on his lips. "Hey there. The name's Caleb." He outstretched his hand for a handshake, and as you accepted it, it took every restraint you could muster up to not squeal with joy as you felt his tight grip. MC was one lucky girl! "It's nice to meet the infamous twin."
You raise a brow, and turn your gaze to stare at MC. "Infamous? You talking shit about me?"
MC huffed. "Of course I don- Ow ow OWW!" She yelped as you reach over to smack her head. "Nothing bad nothing bad honestly!"
You smack her again for good measure. With a huff, you focus on Caleb. "Everything negative she might have told you about me, it's all wrong."
A small chuckle leaves his lips. "So you don't threaten to stab someone whenever you're losing at Kitty Cards?"
You innocently bat your eyes up at him. "Little ole me? Threaten someone? I would never!"
"Liar! You threatened to push me into incoming traffic just last week!"
"No I didn't."
"Yes you did!"
"Nuh uh."
"Yah uh!"
Laughter interrupts you two, and you both turn your heads to see Caleb doubling over with laughter. "Oh! You two are a couple of riots!" He wheezes, wiping tears out of the corner of his eyes. "Oh my God! But you two should come inside now. Grandma has been dying to meet you."
MC's eyes lit up and she drags you in by your arm. "Come come! Let's go meet Grandma!"
The dinner was nice, and you realized that just like in game, Caleb could cook really well in reality as well. You tried your best to answer any questions sent your way or just simply talk, but your mind was mainly on the dishes before you as you gobbled them up. "Woah slow down, slow down spitfire!" The nickname makes you blink, and laughter makes you raise your head to stare at purple eyes. "The food isn't going anywhere. And if you like, I could pack some extras for you?"
You stare at Caleb, then turn your gaze to MC and point at him with your chopsticks. "See, it's not that hard to be nice."
"Why you little -"
Spitfire huh? Well, you could work with that.

caleb's worst fear comes true when the two of you are assigned as lab partners, especially after your first experiment together goes horribly wrong in more ways than one. (4.2k)

Summary: What if Caleb wasn't being entirely honest in Painful Signal? What if he was experiencing phantom limb pain on a regular basis after losing his arm? (Set some time after Painful Signal)
A/N: disclaimers: - tw: self-harm - english isn’t my first language so if something seems wrong or doesn’t make sense that’s probably the reason - i am no expert in phantom limb pain, i just read an article, so like…i’m not a doctor and all my limbs are currently intact, so i am not sure what it actually feels like to experience such a thing

Over the years, Caleb had found his ways of coping with shit the universe threw his way. Sure, they might not have been exactly healthy but to be completely honest, his own well-being was never really something he’d taken into consideration.
She would always reprimand him about his chapped lips or nails bitten to the quick. He’d tried quitting for her sake but that never really worked. Then came the a little too hot showers he took. The skin of his back would get red and itchy, the burning would feel good, though. Distracting enough to just forget…even if just for a moment.
Forget the blank stare she’d give him. Forget all those moments he had to tell himself it would be okay, that she would come back eventually, just like she always did. She wouldn’t remember him; she’d look at him with zero recognition in her eyes but that was fine by him. As long as she came back, he’d reintroduce himself to her over and over again for all eternity if that was what it came to.
Caleb couldn’t deny the irony of the Toring Chip being implanted in his brain, mocking him, laughing in his face as if saying “Weren’t you look for a way to forget? Why are you backing off all of a sudden?”
He’d wanted to forget all the pain she’d gone through, all the ways in which he couldn’t help her back then, was never able to save her. He would’ve been glad to forget about all her suffering, just as she did. But not her…never her. He would cherish the memory of her forever.
When Caleb first came to after the explosion, he didn’t even notice anything was amiss, apart from the fact that he was once again surrounded by white lab coats. They made him sick but he gave no sign of it.
It took some getting used to the new modified mechanical arm. In his life Caleb had considered quite a few scenarios of him becoming disabled due to his chosen field of work. He’d even considered and made his peace with the possibility of one day not making it back home to her after that one dreadful flight in the Aerospace Academy. He had to look up quite a few articles on all sorts of disorders considering how bad his dissociative amnesia got afterwards. But for some reason he’d never researched what losing a limb might feel like. He’d assumed it would just be like having a void where a limb used to be; he’d never taken phantom pain into consideration.
When confronted by her, he said “I barely feel any pain unless it’s under repair.” And even though it was true—the electric shocks going through his body while the arm was under repair were quite painful—he didn’t want her to worry, so he decided not to tell her the whole truth.
For the most part he’d learnt to ignore the phantom pain, he’d tune it out, leaving it somewhere in the background. It’s not as if he’d never dealt with pain before. But other times he’d jolt awake and not be able to go back to sleep for the rest of the night. Sometimes he’d just stare into a mirror for a while in an attempt to make his brain somehow understand and accept the fact that his arm was no more.
It felt like some new intricate type of torture if he was being completely honest. Feeling the pain but not his arm, it was maddening. He’d picked up the habit of scrabbing the area surrounding the mechanical arm—where the seam of it met his torso—red while showering, and subconsciously scratching it whenever he was stressed and felt a phantom pain spike.
Sometimes it felt as if there was an infesting rot under the surface of the mechanical arm, it was burning and throbbing threatening to spread through his whole body. Caleb couldn’t help but think if the rot was eating away at him, if one day he’d wake up to being rotten to the core—nothing human left of him, just some machine with no thoughts, feelings, or emotions of his own. No flesh left to sense her with, just metal and wires.
He’d still love her somehow. Even if only just a fraction of his consciousness was left, he’d find a way to hold on to her, cling to the idea of her.
For the time being, Caleb tried not to think of those things. He had to protect her whatever it took, whatever the price may be.
One day she caught him, though. He was careless; he got lost in his thoughts staring into space in his bedroom. He just got out of shower and didn’t put a shirt on yet.
“What are you doing?” her voice came from the door. “I knocked but you didn’t answer…”
How deep did he have to sink into it all to not even notice? He’d huff out a bitter chuckle if there was any strength left in him to do that.
“What happened to your shoulder?” worry palpable in her voice. Great. She was moving closer, not waiting for his permission to enter the room now that she saw the crime scene because of course she wouldn’t. Caleb tried to cover it up by putting his shirt on. He wasn’t fast enough, though. She caught him red handed. “Caleb?” her beautiful voice laced with worry once again because of him, it made his stomach turn.
“It’s nothing.” He tried but she was already inspecting the reddish area.
She gave him one of those angry frowns she was really good at. “You big dummy,” she said pushing him to sit back down on his bed. “Don’t move.” Then she left the room.
Caleb wasn’t about to disobey her; she’d be even more mad and something was telling him he was in big enough trouble already.
When she came back, it was with a first-aid kit in her hand. She didn’t say a word though, silently getting to work, disinfecting the raw skin around the mechanical arm and gently blowing on it even though Caleb gave no indication of it burning. He never would in front of her. She was probably aware of that, too.
A few minutes later Caleb found himself bandaged and she was looking at him with such intense that he couldn’t bear it, so he glanced away in an attempt to avoid eye contact. Her endeavor to see through him fruitless, she decided to ask him, “Where does it hurt?”
Of course, she realized it wasn’t a question of whether or not it hurt but of where exactly it hurt. Sometimes Caleb hated the way she knew him so well.
He pressed his lips into a thin line and loudly exhaled through his nose, still not looking at her. She wouldn’t have it obviously, so her hands came to his cheeks to hold his head up. There was hurt in her eyes and the knowledge of being the one to put it there broke him.
“I—” he tried; his voice raspy. “I’m sorry,” was all he could say, once again feeling like he was failing her. The rot bubbling up under the metal, gradually trying to overcome him.
“What are you sorry for?” she asked, tenderly caressing his cheeks with her fingers. “Please tell me.”
“I lied.” Her expression became confused but she stayed silent giving him time to elaborate. “It hurts all the time,” Caleb’s voice broke, his vision blurry and he knew what that meant, so he had to push the lump in his throat down and will the tears back. They had no place here.
She leaned into him, pressing her forehead onto his own, the tiny bit of pressure grounding for Caleb. Then he felt one of her hands go down from his face to his neck, to his clavicle, to his bandaged shoulder then down the mechanical arm. Caleb could swear he was able to feel the lightness, the warmth of her touch, the gentle way her fingers ran over the metal. It wasn’t true but he could still feel it, a breathy exhale falling from his lips.
When she drew back, he was barely able to hold in a whimper. Don’t go, please. Don’t leave me, he wanted to beg. But she wasn’t going anywhere. She got on her knees beside his right arm and took his mechanical hand into her own. The metal most certainly way colder than her flesh and blood palm.
Looking him straight in the eye, she pulled his hand towards her mouth and left a light kiss on one of the fingers. Caleb’s breath hitched and he was ready to burst into tears right then and there. The softness of her gaze—not leaving his even for a moment—combined with the little kisses she was peppering onto the metal surface made his heart swell with love for her. There was not a single thought of rot left in head. How could there be any? When she was touching him so gently, with such careful attention, as if he was something worth cherishing even with a cold piece of metal instead of an arm.
Her lips gradually made their way up his forearm, making sure to meticulously leave kisses everywhere she could. Finally, she got to the seam of the metal and pressed her lips onto the bandages before moving to the exposed skin of his torso and neck. Caleb’s breath—an erratic chaos by that point—got caught in his throat, as he felt hot air from her mouth hit his jugular.
He moved his hands to her back to press her body as close as possible to his own, slotting their mouths together, stealing the whimper of surprise off her lips. The kiss messy but short. His left hand came up to cup her cheek.
She was looking at him with her brows furrowed. “Don’t ever lie to me again,” she said with a light hit to his chest. “If you’re hurting, I’ll be right there with you, hurting by your side.”
“I don’t want you to hurt,” was all Caleb could master in response.
She looked at him with pity. “I’ll hurt anyway. Even more so if you hide your pain from me for my sake.”
And it sounded so familiar. Caleb huffed out a bitter laugh, realizing she was just like him at the end of the day. Even thinking and feeling about him the same way he did for her.
“Okay then,” Caleb said. “We’ll hurt together.”
“Deal,” she replied and took both his hands into hers intertwining their fingers.

Most days in Linkon City begin with sirens.
Loud, blaring, unmistakable screeches that cut through the early morning quiet like a blade, carving their way through alleyways and avenues alike. They seep into walls, curl beneath locked doors, and coil around the restless minds of those who have long since stopped flinching at their call.
To them, the inhabitants of this city, it is nothing more than background noise—a city’s heartbeat, rhythmic and ceaseless. But to you, it is a warning. A sign that the world beyond the window of your dorm room is a battlefield, and you, a stranger in its midst, are only beginning to understand the rules of this strange place.
Perhaps, in time, you will grow desensitized as they have. Learn to sleep through the wailing cries, to walk these streets without the ever-present weight of caution pressing against your ribs. In a way, they forbade you from venturing out, instilling a fear within you that if you did, you would be the individual these melodies chased—or worse, the victim they had been called for in the first place.
The entirety of the first semester has passed, and you haven’t even finished unpacking. Your suitcase remains half-full, a tangible reminder that you do not yet belong here. That you still have a choice—to do something before this place sinks its teeth into you, before you become just another soul who mistakes chaos for comfort.
But that choice is an illusion.
Here, people like you make no difference. You are not a hero, nor anything close to it. You are just a student who knows better, one who recognizes that the sirens will always be there, a requiem for the city’s unrest. And the crime will persist, as will the men in uniform who fail to stop it.
Somewhere beyond the blaring wails, beyond the tangled skyline and shadowed alleys, someone is fighting a battle you will never quite understand.
And for now, all you can do is listen.
Yet, in a way, you know that this was exactly where you wanted to be.
Despite its rapidly deteriorating surroundings, Linkon University remained a place of prestige. Young children dreamed of acceptance into its ranks, babbling to their parents about how they, too, would one day make these halls their stomping grounds. Maybe it was naivety that brought you here. Or maybe it was the last remnants of a dream that hadn’t yet died on your tongue.
Or perhaps, it was the medical journalism program—a rare gem, dwindling into obscurity at every other university.
You were lucky to be accepted. But humbly speaking, luck had very little to do with it. Your stats spoke for themselves: a 1540 SAT, a 4.98 weighted GPA, more extracurriculars than you could count on both hands. A smart cookie, as written in the shining letters of recommendation that paved your way here.
And yet, imposter syndrome festered like a quiet disease, creeping into the spaces between your confidence. You have spent your entire life at the top. Always number one.
Here? You were number two.
Number two to whom? You did not know. Not yet, anyway.
♥︎ ♥︎ ♥︎
Caleb’s perfect life has unraveled in the span of a week and a half, but he positively swears it’s not his fault.
It’s yours.
Ten days ago, at precisely 12:57 PM, he endured the worst torment known to man: his seat in the lecture hall was stolen. A cruel move, truly. Class had been in session for four days, he’d claimed that seat twice—twice—and by the unspoken law of university students everywhere, that granted him full ownership. So why, then, were you sitting in his allotted property?
Looking back, Caleb sees only two possible explanations. The first: you had unknowingly taken the seat after enrolling just before the census date. The second: you were out to get him from the very start.
And personally? He’s convinced it’s the latter.
But alas, he hadn’t made a fuss about it then. It wasn’t like he’d just lost the single best seat in the entire hall—the one with perfect access to the exit, the projector, and the professor’s desk. But hey, he could be cool about this, right? Yeah… totally cool. So cool. The coolest.
Days passed, and everyone seemed to be settling into the spring semester just fine. The weather was getting warmer, flowers on the great lawn were blooming, and Caleb was thriving.
That was, until the unthinkable happened.
Time? 2:19 PM. Class? CHEM 001 AH. Location? The Grand Hall.
Caleb sat directly behind you, having resigned himself to the second best seat in the room, as the sound of pencils scratching against paper filled the otherwise quiet space.
Taking practice exams felt pointless. A waste of time, really. His efforts could be better spent elsewhere—like taking the real exam or absolutely demolishing his roommate Zayne in Apex Legends yet again. But instead, here he was, surrounded by classmates diligently scribbling away as the session inched closer to its eventual end.
And when it did, Caleb would have simply packed up and gone on his merry way—if not for the single most bone-chilling sentence he had ever heard in his entire academic career.
You were chatting with the girl beside you, talking about things he had zero interest in. Your shared biology class at 3 PM, your dorm building, plans to meet up at the dining hall later… blah blah blah. But then—an acronym. A single, horrific acronym triggered him like a sleeper agent.
“My GPA? Oh, it’s… 4.30. I think. To be honest, it’s been a while since I checked.”
His jaw went slack. His eyes widened. The color drained from his face.
A 4.30 GPA? No. No. That couldn’t be real. That could not be real.
But as his gaze flickered between the back of your head and your friend’s, he came to the most horrifying conclusion of all.
You weren’t lying. And if that were true… then that meant you had the same GPA he did.
Which meant that, depending on your course load and how well you performed, you could take his spot as number one in the class rank.
♥︎ ♥︎ ♥︎
Caleb burst into his dorm room, slinging his backpack onto his mattress before face-planting into it with a sound somewhere between a groan and a hmph.
Across the room, Zayne didn’t even glance up from his desk, fingers tapping away at his mounted laptop. Click, clack. Click, clack. For a stretch of time, that was the only sound in the room—until he finally exhaled, the kind of quiet sigh that could only mean here we go again.
“Rough day?”
Caleb didn’t even hesitate. “The worst day.”
Zayne closed his eyes for a moment, like he was mentally preparing himself, before pushing away from his desk and turning his chair just enough to look at his roommate. “What happened?”
Still face-down on the bed, Caleb let out a long, exaggerated sigh—nowhere near as silent as Zayne’s. “I think I have to take trig next semester. Honors.”
That made Zayne pause. Brow quirked, he leaned back. “Why? Your counselor quite literally said you’re already on track to graduate with honors and as one of the top-ranked students in our year.”
That was the problem, though. Caleb wasn’t satisfied with being one of the best. He wanted to be the best—and now, that source of pride was under attack.
“Well, that was before I found out I’m sharing a GPA with some girl in my chem lecture,” he said, rolling onto his back to stare blankly at the ceiling. “Which means if I don’t get my shit together and pack on a few more honors courses, I’m cooked.”
Zayne laughed. Actually laughed. Shaking his head, he turned back to his desk, plucked his glasses off the mousepad, and slid them on. “You should hear yourself right now.”
Caleb’s head snapped to the side, eyebrows pinching together. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It’s just amusing, is all.” Zayne smirked. “I find it endearing that you, Mr. ‘I can skip the final and still pass with a 94%,’ Mr. ‘I think I might take astronomy honors for fun this semester,’—”
“All riiight, I get it,” Caleb cut in. “What’s your point?”
Zayne snickered, amused. “My point is that if you of all people feel threatened by a classmate you hardly know, maybe there’s a reason for that.”
Caleb hated that there was probably some truth to that. Not that he’d ever admit it. Being threatened by a classmate he barely knew? Please. He knew enough. (And yes, he had meticulously sifted through the entire roster of his chemistry class to stalk your Canvas profile. What? It’s… field research.)
“Y’know, you’re terrible at pep talks,” he muttered, folding his hands behind his head.
“I’m not trying to be,” Zayne replied easily. “But if you want my input—take the trig course next semester. Something tells me you’ll need it.”
Caleb rolled onto his side, fishing his laptop from his backpack as the weight of his evening workload settled in.
And maybe Zayne was right.
Maybe he would need all the help he could get.
♥︎ ♥︎ ♥︎
It wasn’t until six days later—today—that Caleb knew for certain fate was no longer on his side.
The professor’s voice cut through the shuffle of students packing up their belongings, all of which were currently praying that their first lab of the semester wouldn’t be a complete and utter disaster. It was a well known fact that Dr. Rappaccini was quite the harsh critic, and an even harsher grader. Her score on Rate My Professors was a whopping 2.8/5 for crying out loud.
“Alright, it’s time for you all to receive your lab partners for the semester. Before heading to the lab next door, please check the list of pairings at the front.”
Luckily, Caleb had committed the syllabus to memory and knew that each person was scored individually no matter how their partner performed, but it was recommended that the pair conduct their experiments together to save time and... okay, maybe he hadn’t memorized it as well as he thought, but at least he knew the core details, right?
Scanning the list, his blood ran cold. He squinted, hoping that the prescription of his glasses had failed him, but of course, it was unmistakable. Your name was printed next to his. Emboldened, unignorable, in a perfectly neutral 12 pt Times New Roman font.
The walk to the laboratory was a quiet one, and you were walking a few feet ahead of him without a care in the world. Reaching for the door handle, he twisted the metallic lever and gestured for you to enter ahead of him with a single nod of his head. It was a force of habit. He may not care for you as an academic peer, but you didn't directly wrong him in any way. Not knowingly, that is.
With a curt nod of your own and a sliver of a smile, you entered the class with a quiet “thank you.”
And before he could follow in step behind you, the neverending line of your fellow classmates began to flood into the room, leaving him to stand idle while offering each of them a thin-lipped smile. It felt like an eternity before he was able to step inside of the laboratory too, and his first instinct was to map out the classroom to find the best possible seating arrangement.
To his surprise… you’d already claimed the most optimal lab station, and as he approached, you made the first move to speak.
“I hope you’re okay with sitting here,” you say, fishing out your sleek notebook and a bright blue pencil. “It’s the only lab station with equal access to the exit, the supplies cabinet, and the professor’s desk.”
Caleb raises an eyebrow, cocking his head to the side as bewilderment etches into his features. Were you inside of his brain? He clears his throat, shaking away his confusion as he nods. “Yeah, I’m alright with this spot. Good choice.”
Smiling, you nod too. “Cool.”
A beat of silence passes, and you smooth your hands over the black resin material of the table, a movement that his eyes instinctively follow. Then, your hand raises and extends out to him, forcing him to blink himself out of his state of daydreaming.
You say your name while tilting your head with a smile—this time, a smile with teeth—as you wait for his hand to take yours. “And you’re… Xia?”
Raising his eyebrows, he shakes his head while a chuckle slips through his carefully crafted exterior. “Caleb,” he corrects, his firm grasp enveloping your hand as he gives it a shake. “Caleb Xia.”
“Ah, got it,” you remark, an epiphany dawning on you as you slip your hand from his hold. “Well, I’m going to go get our safety goggles.”
But before leaving, you straightened, eyes glued to him—or rather, his head.
Huffing out a laugh through his nose, Caleb’s lip tugs up in the corner. “What are you doing?”
Tapping your chin, you sigh. “I’m trying to see if you have a big head. If you do, I’ll have to go fight tooth and nail for one of the ones with adjustable straps.”
Rubbing his eye with the heel of his palm, he rests his elbow on the edge of the table before leaning his cheek into his hand. “Well, lay it on me. What’s your diagnosis?”
Humming, you tilt your head back and forth before nodding your head a single time. “Big-head syndrome. I’m positive.”
Caleb’s eyes crinkle as he laughs. “I should take that as a compliment. Big head means big brain, you know.”
“Or a big ego,” you retort with a shrug, giving him a once-over with raised brows before whisking away towards the horde of students currently going to war over the remaining pick of the litter.
Yeah, that too, he thinks.
In your absence, he takes the liberty of prepping the lab for the both of you. Beakers? Check. Random substance that the two of you were going to be experimenting on? Check. Hydrochloric acid? Check. Sodium bicarbonate? Check—
“Safety goggles,” you state, plopping down on your stool and handing his pair to him.
Without missing a beat, he speaks. “Check.”
Drawing back slightly, you turn to look at him with an arched eyebrow. “Uh… yeah. Check.”
Faltering, Caleb slides the item onto his face as he stammers through his words. “I was just… never mind, let’s start.”
The class had settled into a low hum—the murmur of newly paired partners, the scribbling of notes, the soft hiss of chemicals reacting.
As the two of you began the experiment, an incredibly prominent conclusion dawned on him: Disliking you as a person wasn’t as easy as he’d hoped. As a competitor? You were treacherous. As a lab partner? You were… tolerable. Efficient. Annoyingly easy to work with.
It wasn’t the end result that he was hoping for, if he were to be entirely honest with himself. He wanted you to be difficult to be around, he wanted you to be stuck up, he wanted you to give him a genuine reason to dislike you apart from being the root of his newfound insecurity. But you weren’t, and that was a problem.
“Pass me the baking soda?” you ask.
“The sodium bicarbonate?”
“Yeah. The baking soda.”
Caleb tilts his head with a smile. “Also known as sodium bicarbonate.”
You glance his way, and your eyes met. “Congrats, big guy. You know big words. Now pass it.”
“Sure thing, boss.” Biting back a smile, he hands it over, only to retract it at the last second. “Wait. What’s it called again?”
Your force smile was all teeth. “Sodium bicarbonate.”
Finally relenting, Caleb places the bowl in your orbit with a triumphant grin.
He was smart enough to know that this was a bad idea. Despite how easily the two of you worked together, he knew that he couldn’t entertain this any further. You weren’t just his classmate, his peer—you were his competition. And while he’s heard the saying keep your friends close, but your enemies closer just as many times as the next person, he knows that mixing any ounce of developing friendship with his pursuit for greatness would be wrong.
It would work best that way. You can’t be friends, and that’s okay.
And for the first time in what felt like ages, fate seemed to agree with him.
“Hmm,” Caleb soon rumbles, squinting at the beaker. “This isn’t lookin’ too good. You said you added the sodium bicarbonate, yeah?”
You frown, glancing up from your notes. Your stomach twists at the sight of the clock—barely any time left before the lab ends. The professor would be making her rounds any second now.
“What? I didn’t add it. You said you added it.”
Caleb flits his gaze to the side of your face. “No, I added hydrochloric acid.”
Your head snaps toward him so fast he was surprised it didn’t snap right off. “No, I added hydrochloric acid.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“Yes, I did.”
“No, you didn’t.”
You exhale sharply, frustration creeping up your neck. “How are you gonna tell me what I did or didn’t do?”
Your pulse ticks up a bit faster than it naturally should, and your eyes rose up from the glass cylinder. Around the room, students were already wrapping up their conclusions while the two of you hadn’t even finished the experiment. You suck in a breath and push up from your stool.
“Fine. Fine. Can you just pass me the baking soda?”
Caleb nods, handing over the pre-measured bowl of sodium bicarbonate. While you worked to fix the mess, he jotted down a few quick notes. You added just enough of the powder to neutralize the acid—but not smother it completely.
And then? Silence. The two of you sat. Watching. Waiting. Hoping. Praying.
Then, miraculously, the beaker decided to behave and the fizzing subsided.
Like clockwork, you both exhaled, shoulders slumping as small, victorious smiles tugged at your mouths—
Until yours vanished entirely. “You’re welcome, by the way.”
Caleb falters, eyes narrowing. “I didn’t say thank you.”
“Well, you should have.”
“Why? If I hadn’t pointed out the weird reaction, we’d have been screwed.”
“Oh? If I hadn’t realized neither of us added the sodium bicarbonate—which was your responsibility, by the way—we would’ve actually been screwed.”
Tension thickened between you like a drawn bowstring. You clench your jaw and look away, scribbling down your final observations. Stupid man, you thought to yourself. And here you were, actually believing that this semester wouldn’t be a total shitshow, that maybe, just maybe, you’d gotten lucky.
Unfortunately not.
Then, your attention was caught by something out of the ordinary. Your gaze lands on his neck, and your breath hitched. Staring back at you was a small, multi-legged beady eyed monster. Sticking out your pointer finger, you still find yourself instinctively drawing back, as if it were out to get you next. “There’s a spider on—”
But before you could finish your sentence, Caleb winced, his veins tightening as he instinctively flicked the eight-legged menace off. You sucked your teeth, drumming your fingers on the table. So much for your timely warning.
Glancing his way, your brows elevate as you see the already forming bite mark on his neck. “Yikes. It got you good.”
“Did it?” he asks, raising a hand to rub over the mark with narrowed eyes. “Hm. Guess so, yeah.”
Reluctantly, you ask, “Are you okay?”
With a nod, he picks up his pencil once more and works on finishing the last of his lab report. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
Sighing airily, you can’t help the smile that tugs on your mouth. “Poor spider, being flicked through the air like that.”
Like routine, Caleb shot a glare your way. “Funny.”
“Thanks.”
With that, you left for the washing station. Meanwhile, Dr. Rappaccini stood from her desk, making her rounds. It was in that moment that a shrill of panic shot up his spine—the stimulation foreign, unfamiliar, and… terrifying.
He could feel his heart rate shooting through the roof, a sweat break on his forehead, and his fingertips flex at his sides—all things that he wasn’t even conscious of. And before he knew it, he was glancing in your direction, noting that you were distracted. Good.
With a quick ease, he snatched up your notepad and erased a few numbers, replacing them with subtle, logicless mistakes. 34? Now a 26. 32 to the power of 5? Not anymore.
It wasn’t his proudest moment. Sabotaging his own lab partner’s work? Definitely not.
Ten seconds. That’s all it took to ruin you just enough. He slid the notepad back into place, brushing away the eraser shavings. Like clockwork, you returned, none the wiser.
Exhaling softly, you turned to him. “Look, I just wanted to say that—”
“Now, you two,” Dr. Rappaccini’s voice cut you off.
You both turned as she scanned and picked up Caleb’s report, making a few marks with her fine-pointed marker before sliding it back into place. You glanced over, making note of his grade. 94.
Then, she picked up yours. A moment later, she handed it back. Your professor held up a roll of stickers, tearing two off before setting them down on the table.
Despite the vibrant designs on the stickers, your stomach dropped. Your grade was big, bold, and unmistakable. 82.
“Wait—Dr. Rappaccini,” you call after her, staring at the page with widened eyes of shock. “I… I don’t understand. What did I do wrong?”
“Well, your experiment was solid—your observations were well-written, and your documentation was precise. But your math?” She sighs. “Completely off.” A beat of silence. Then, a smile. “Don’t feel discouraged. You’re a good student as you are—no need to compare your scores to others.”
The implication was clear. She thought you were smart—just not as smart as Caleb.
Huffing, you toss your notebook onto the table, fingers curling against the edge of it.
“You got cut off earlier,” he says casually, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. “What were you sayin’?”
Blinking, you tried to retrace your thoughts. “Oh, yeah… I was just saying that…”
Your voice trails, eyes drifting to your lab report. Caleb caught the flicker of realization dawning on you—and when you turned to him, his not-so-hidden grin said it all.
“I was just saying,” you snap, “that you’re an asshole whose handwriting looks like a drunk chicken clawed at my report.”
“I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about,” he says with a shrug, peeling off his sticker to plaster it onto your shoulder. “Good luck on the exam tomorrow morning.”
And with that, he walks out of the lab.
“Yeah, you too,” you murmur, though he was already gone before he could hear the hissed “bitch” that followed.
Irritation pricks at your skin as you stuff—more like shove—your belongings into your backpack. Prick. So much for not knowing the single person you were beneath in the class ranks.
Guilt stirred in his chest as he walked towards his dorm building… but only a little.
♥︎ ♥︎ ♥︎
By the time Caleb stumbled back to his dorm, he felt like he’d been hit by a freight train.
He barely managed to push the door open before kicking off his shoes, letting his backpack slump to the floor with a heavy thud. His head swam, his breath uneven as he widened his eyes in a feeble attempt to stay awake. Slapping himself on the cheek, he quickly realized it was no use. His neck stung worse than it had when the spider first bit him, the dull throb pulsing beneath his fingertips as he rubbed over the puncture point.
"Are you drunk?" Zayne’s voice drifts from across the room.
"No," Caleb mutters, face buried in his pillow. "Just… tired. Really tired."
He sank into the thin mattress like dead weight, the springs groaning beneath him. With sluggish hands, he pulled his glasses from his face and tossed them onto the bedside table, missing by an inch. His breathing grew heavier, his skin slick with cold sweat. His pupils—blown wide as saucers—fluttered shut as he barely mustered the strength to tug his shirt over his head and toss it aside.
And within seconds, he was out like a light.
♥︎ ♥︎ ♥︎
The morning sun sliced through the blinds, painting golden stripes across Caleb’s bare back as he jolted awake.
His chest rose and fell in sharp, erratic breaths, but despite the abruptness of it all, he felt… alert. Fully awake in a way that didn’t exactly make sense.
Blinking rapidly, he reached for his glasses and slid them onto his face with a groggy groan. And then—he froze.
His vision was still blurry.
Frowning, he pulled his glasses off, breathed onto the lenses, and wiped them against his bedsheet. When he slid them back on—blurry again. He pulled them down. Clear. Glasses up. Blurry. Glasses down. Clear.
He stares at them in his hands. “...Weird.”
Setting the frames down, he threw his legs over the bed and staggered toward his closet—only to catch sight of his reflection in the mirror. His eyes nearly bulged out of his head.
Since when the hell did he have abs?
He flexed instinctively, stomach tensing under his own scrutiny. Then his gaze trailed up—to his arms. His biceps. His shoulders.
Turning, twisting, he inspected every angle of himself like a stranger in his own skin. He’d been in shape before, sure, but this? This was different. He would’ve noticed this.
Knuckles rapped against the door, making him flinch.
“Caleb? Are you awake? I forgot my key.” A pause. Then, “Are you feeling any better? You slept like a log last night—perhaps you’re catching a bug.”
"A bug?" Caleb echoes under his breath, flexing again just to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating. “Holy shit… Uh, yeah, man, I’m good. Just—gimme a sec.”
Turning back toward his desk, he reached for his chair, only meaning to push it aside—but the moment his palm touched the wood, it stuck.
His brows furrow.
He yanks once. Then again.
Nothing.
His heartbeat quickens as he curls his fingers, attempting to lift his hand—and instead, he lifts the entire chair clean off the ground.
“What the—” His stomach drops. He waved his hand. The chair waved with it. Up. Down. Side to side. Still stuck.
“Caleb?” Zayne calls from the other side of the door.
Caleb whips his head toward the sound, panic tightening in his throat. Shit. He bolted across the room—chair still attached to his palm—and somehow managed to unlock the door just as Zayne strode in.
Zayne, clearly in a rush, barely spared him a glance as he grabbed a stack of papers from his desk, clipped them together, and breezed back out with a nod.
The door clicked shut behind him.
Caleb exhaled sharply—only to realize his hand was still stuck… to the doorknob.
Huffing, he gave it a firm tug, expecting it to pop free. Instead, the entire knob wrenched out of the door, hinges snapping with a loud crack.
"Shit."
He barely had time to process before his body betrayed him once again—this time, with a sharp thwip.
A thick strand of silk shot from his wrist, attaching him to his bedpost.
His pulse stuttered.
"What. The. Fuck."
Another sharp tug. Another web. More panic. Before he knew it, his dorm room looked like a crime scene from some horror movie—threads of silk stretching from walls to furniture to the ceiling.
His gaze snapped to the clock on his desk. 12:56 PM.
"Alright," he mutters, inhaling deeply. "Exam starts in four minutes. I’m sticking to everything I touch. I’m half-naked. Cool, cool, cool."
But nothing about this was cool.
If anyone in the history of Linkon University could take an exam like this, it was going to be him.
series masterlist. ┆ next: soon!
a/n like & reblog if you enjoyed!! this was really fun to write :) also i should’ve mentioned it rly isnt specified how old reader is, just that she’s in college and just starting her second semester at linkon university :) she can be a transfer student (which is kinda what i had in mind), a first year, etc lol it doesn’t really matter bc i’m fine with that being a “plot hole”
i could not stop laughing while writing this at 4am bc i was just imagining caleb coming up with an elaborate ass internalized beef with reader and she’s just sitting in her chem lab like

Caleb who follows you around, everywhere, all the time.
Caleb who wakes up before you every morning, preparing you breakfast- or even lunchbox if you have work that day. He takes pride in knowing your preferences, even if you never explicitly told him. With proud smirk placing it before you.
Caleb who binge watches/reades all the shows, books you ever talked about, both before and after dating. He immerses himself in everything that interests you, so he can love you better.
Caleb who swears he is not jealous type- he is.
Caleb who In crowded spaces, positions himself between you and others, acting as a barrier, for your safety- also because he wants to be close to you- he craves it- and if there's chance he is grabbing it straightaway.
Caleb who is always there to comfort you during tough time- it doesn't matter if you are just crying because you acrylic figure fell and broke- it hurts him to see you upset. And your new acrylic figure collection can't help but agree.
Caleb has a whole folder of your photos - all the photos on his phone are only pictures of you. He just finds you cute, ok?. snoring? he must record it, this is too adorable for his heart. just drinking water? he must take photo, this is future wife after all. You never even notice him taking pictures, he is so sleek with it...
amongst the many hobbies of your beautiful hard working husband, one of them stood out the most: racing. zayne drives with such grace, he probably would have received 16 missed calls from whole cast of fast furious asking him to be part of the next movie. treating patients with such patience by day, racing by night… what a man! He can afford it after all, so why not? he is the type to make you fresh orange juice with pulp in the morning and then go outside drift so effortlessly, it makes professional racers question their entire careers. he doesn't even need a coach—he learns purely through vibes and sheer elegance. he steps into a car, smells the air, analyses, feels it, does a couple of stretches, and suddenly it's like watching poetry in motion. you have no idea how he does it, you're not about to question a racer who hugs the apex like it's his favourite granny-who can explode- and still flips the softest, fluffiest pancakes before the next shift in hospital.
xavier, on the other hand, has the raw power for basketball but none of the coordination. you made him join the basketball club, this man had to do something sportif after all! though he got very passionate about basketball he could not play. his idea of a "drabble" is launching the ball into another building, and if you ask him to do a serve, he’ll literally twerk- he is serving after all?
he gets the hang of it eventually—almost a full year later, when everyone else has already moved on to their next hobby. now he’s just waiting for the basketball season to come back so he can finally convince everyone to play with him again. poor thing. you can find him standing outside the court with his basketball, looking like a stray dog waiting to be let inside.
sylus is… passionate about tennis. let's just leave it at that. he swings the racket like he's trying to destroy all his enemies along with it, and any unfortunate soul who dares to play against him ends up fearing for their life. And no, zendaya would NOT call him to join the cast of next challengers movie- he will still arrange it- every ball he hits sounds like gunfire, and the courts have a dedicated "sylus damage fund" because he’s broken so many rackets, fences, and possibly the willpower of a few umpires. he can not play, but he doesn't believe in "low peasant" talk - the racket he accidently sended to the orbit made scientists go insane. news headlines for the next month were "A RACKET SPOTTED IN SPACE!! ALIENS ARE REAL?!"
there’s also rafayel. or "rafayel-the-fashion" as he calls himself. the man who buys everything-everything- that is trending, both for you and himself. "We gotta slay honey" he tells you while buying latest glamour lois luivitton purses-not that you complaining. The man, the artist, the diva- he feels the aesthetic whenever he walks to any room and he adjusts to it, he buys closes which match with room design, he slayes.
"Design is soo gnarly an-" and now as soon as his art editor who he asked politely-made-to come to his house at 3am to discuss his new art piece he straight away indulges in description of the piece, untill he spots something, he stops, he squints, he watches, he observes- he notices something even lucifer would have diarrhea out of from.
"IS THAT FAKE CHANEL ON YOU?!" he shrieked in utter horror, falling to the nearest sofa, clutching to his chest. He couldn't believe it, he couldn't! the shear audacity! To come into his house in....in....this!- it is 3 am -"oh, I think I am having have heart attack or heart dead whatever you people call it!" he wailed "this is,th- I HOPE SOMEOME FARTS INTO YOUR BREATHING MACHINE WHEN YOU GET OLDER, YOU FASHION TERRORIST!!"
someone actually did fart into editors breathing machine years later- rafayel made sure of it.....
and finally, there's caleb, apart from his many hundred jet models collection, he buys you underwear. now, when he met you in university he knew- knew that he needs to be in charge of your underwear department. Though he restricted himself in takeover of such honourable post until you two got married.
you lost him in the mall? no, you didn't, he is in lingerie section, nodding at some cheetah print lingerie's like it was some soldiers doing admirable job in serving their country. he doesn't even ask for help, he knows. he knows what he is buying, what size he is buying, he feels it and he is not embarrassed, no. this man watched so many documentaries on "art of lingerie" you are surprised he doesn't even open his own business. you kind of found it cute until he crossed- bended- the line like now with his: "Baby maybe we just need to take one cup bigger so i can put my hands through it, yeah?"- people turned around passing by, eyes wide, desperately trying to not make eye contact.
your eye twitched, hell you think even you whole brain twitched. with voice which could be mistakenly taken for sweet you smiled "Caleb?"
"Yes, pipsqueak?"
"I have a gun on me"
"Yes. pipsqueak." though his poker face didn't match the way he clutched the bra of your size from the section, size bigger magically disappearing in air - he threw it across the shop, if he doesn't see it nobody sees it..

Caleb who falls in love with a picky eater
Caleb who from a very young age knows that you’re not willing to touch most foods. he- not so- secretly observed you at lunch every-single-day for years to see what parts of you lunch you end up neglecting and now when he once again can cook for you, he is back at his not so subtle glances.
Caleb who never teases you about being picky, after all that’s what made him start cooking. making your life nicer is his biggest reward - nailing the flavours that you love and not even touching the ones that you don't like. He prefers to eat your leftovers as well- long finished his meal, he patiently waits for you to finish and give all that's you couldn't take anymore- with the portion size he is giving you, you might think you are an Olympic weightlifter.
Caleb who attempts -and succeeds- at bribing you through his food- he did win your heart through stomach after all- he is very giddy about it, giggling like a schoolgirl whenever he thinks about it - you love his food.
Caleb who knows it’s his life’s mission to make sure you are well fed.
Caleb who cooks for you three proper meals everyday, with no skip. you had to put a lock on kitchen door, to physically restrict him from cooking when he is sick, which did end up with him wailing about his "sugar" dying out of hunger.
Caleb who telepathically knows what you are going to prefer on specific days- Raining? Oh, he is already preparing soup, but not "just" soup. no, he is preparing "that one"- the Thai chicken soup, that you two tried once(3 years ago), while on a trip in Japan, the one you called delicious five times (he counted) -just to suggest it politely after.
Caleb who will take away any items off of a dish in any events-everywhere, all the time- you two visit before you even ask, hell even before you even can think about it, if he is not the cook.( his food, after all does not contain anything you have no taste for) nothing to be embarrassed about! food is meant to be enjoyed! and he will do anything, just for you not to worry.
Caleb who will quite literally do anything- backflip, sell his soul, be a monk, go bald, can even explode!- to make sure you’re happy, healthy, and not hungry!!
“Please?”
“No.”
“You’re missing out.”
“Caleb, we’re literally in a Burger King.”
"Doesn't mean you can't be my main meal"
Bèl, she/her
Requests are open, both for lads and jjk~

You and your co-actor Caleb are currently the hottest topic in the industry, since the newest movie where you two played tragic couple, bound to die- went VIRAL.
Nobody could ignore the chemistry between the actors. Fans, media alike are buzzing: "Are they dating? They are not? What you mean, no?"
No one knows for sure, but during the latest Vogue 30+ Q&A, Caleb's lovestruck puppy eyes directed your way didn't go unnoticed. The way he looked at you—like a lovestruck puppy—set social media abuzz.
Edits of the interview have gone viral, with fans dissecting every glance and smile. The quote of the month now is "Find yourself a man who looks at you the way Caleb look at MC"-did led to some people crying- and same old "SO ARE THEY FOR GODS SAKE DATING?" this one is followed by bitter "NO" (Caleb would want it though, which is emphasised by his not so rare comments on ship edits of you two). Some are convinced it's just exceptional acting chemistry; others are certain there's something more.
But latest Instagram post- where he is on his knees crawling towards you, looking up at you with a satisfied gleam in his eyes, holding your leg in gentle touch. He is worshipping you and it's obvious-after all he is truly the happiest when he is on his knees before you, but you don't need to know that for now (You already know)- did send some people to coma. Some printing it on their shirts, some making it a poster as an absolute "femdom" symbol- hell, someone even did stick it to their face.
The "photo" in question.
@uzmacchiato dividers!
A lovestruck Caleb would do anything for you. He didn’t care about appearances and how he looked to anyone else but whenever you were on sight he is hiding- under bed??(please save his roommates)or whatever surface he can hide beneath of, to just quickly check his hello kitty hand mirror- your gift. He can't appear in front of his drop dead gorgeous girl with any flaw, after all.
Long day of walking and your feet are sore? He is already kneeling before you like a damn dog, no questions asked, taking your shoes off for you in a swift movement and is already massaging your feet -he watched too many massage videos on youtube, to do the best massage for you, everything best for you(save his roommates, on whom he experimented his massaging skills, before even dared to touch you)-smiling giddily, like this what life was all about. Something else sore? Go ahead and tell him! He is already taking his jacket off, warming up (FOR WHAT?!).
Cold around him? He’s taking off anything he can to give to you in hopes it would keep you warm— was actually kicked out of restaurant once because of him actively "stripping".
Dropped something? Oh, and it so happened to fall in the depths of the ocean? He’s diving right into the depths of it-years of training in the fleet weren't for waste after all! No equipment is needed for the colonel(he almost drowned that day).
God forbid he see you with another man. He’s coming - running- up to you like his life depends on it, slinging his arm around you and butting straight into the conversation. If the guy’s far too close for his comfort, he’ll make sure to pepper you with wet, loud kisses wherever he can.
Colonel Caleb hates losing after all, and he vowed to never lose you to another.
Caleb, all tangled up with you after the filthiest, toe-curling, back-arching, forgot-your-own-name kind of sex, just holding you close and murmuring sweet things against your skin like you’re his whole world.
