reading into irl ichiyo higuchi and dwelling on the statement that ichiyo was bound by the structure of acceptable writing for female writers at the time — having to recreate a performance of feminity which contradicted and moved around the actual way women spoke, & which notably did not come naturally to her — but managed to make it her own + express assertiveness within it nonetheless.
anyway this is all just to say that i'm so fond of the bsd higuchi-centric chapter which says she's not naturally suited the port mafia, but that she stays and tries anyway. the way she gains respect via throwing herself into a fight she expects to lose from the motivation of her love/loyalty for akutagawa. thinking primarily of ch.77 where tachihara's suitability to the mafia is defined in his recklessness, passion, and bravery— there is something to me there about how she makes those traits her own.
my theory on what it could be…
i think that Higuchi’s ability will be called “Takekurabe” (Growing Up/Child’s Play) after her most famous work, and i believe it might have something to do with reincarnation. here’s why…
in this official art she is featured with red spider lilies, which are symbolic of death, but are also thought of as a bridge between heaven & earth…a reminder of the “cyclical nature of life & death”
Takekurabe also explores themes such as how life is fleeting. & also abt being forced into a role that you didn’t want, or wouldn’t have chosen for yourself
(plus potential foreshadowing: in this official art, Higuchi is surrounded by pinwheels— which symbolize childhood, but also the cycle of life, & the buddhist teaching of reincarnation)
back to reincarnation…
after being told that Akutagawa may never wake up, she reached out to him & a glow appeared around her hand— like she was activating an ability— before pulling away bc she remembered that he didn’t want her (or anyone’s) help
but this means that she’s able to give help in this sort of situation
additionally, the fact that she almost always appears in official arts w Akutagawa indicates that she will probably use her ability on him at some point, which makes sense considering his terminal condition
(note the pulse in the background, his bright eyes, & her white suit)
because we have yet to see her use her ability, i’m assuming that she can only use it once, so she’d be giving up her life for Akutagawa’s (a life for a life— his reincarnation)
this would imitate irl Higuchi’s unfortunately short life— with her having died at only 25 years old. it also makes sense to give her such a powerful ability since irl Higuchi is such an important figure in japanese history— japan’s first professional woman writer of modern literature
i wonder if Higuchi’s sister has anything to do with her ability (in bsd she’s unnamed, but her irl sister’s name was Kuniko so that’s what we’ll call her)
according to Higuchi’s bungo episode, despite her literary genius, irl Higuchi was practically useless without her sister
Kuniko was the one who made what Higuchi did possible & kept things functional behind the scenes
so i think it’d be super interesting (& a cool irl reference) if Kuniko was involved in some way with Higuchi’s ability (i also just want to see more of her bc this sister duo is so cute :’))
bonus: when i watched this anime adaptation of Takekurabe, this was the ending scene & i wonder if it was harukawa’s inspiration for this official art 🥹
white lilies represent purity, & since they were off by the side of the road, they might have represented the character’s fleeting purity. white lilies are also used at funerals to represent a soul’s return to purity & its journey to the afterlife… which circles back to the reincarnation theme 👀
i need to buy a gun
hopefully hopefully s3 ends at the pizza party chapter/end of the red house arc bc any more than that and they'll have to make adjustments AGAIN or rush it (or maybe since it said grim reaper arc maybe that's the only part they'll be covering (like it'll only have 5 eps or something)
but if it ends at the end of the red house arc it'll be too short for 12 eps soooo YOUNG EXORCIST ANIMATED HELL YEAH
Abandon all hope, ye who enter

Prince Atsushi 👑
no, but listen, it's hilarious. kissed him, died in his arms, and then returned without remembering anything, leaving montresor to deal with all this shit alone. the peak of comedy. william, where is your shame. thank you. this is exactly what montresor deserves. sexual orientation crisis and unexplained psychological horror.
I had a dream last night

I think the main reason the other misfits don't listen to Eulalie is because her name is Eulalie and not Eulatruth
Song: Fake Plastic Trees | Radiohead
(beginning voice by me)
Despite the first impression, Berenice seems to be the most pragmatic and rational of the misfits. Although she looks frolicsome, fearless, mischievous even, she also dislikes challenges, prefers not to get into big troubles and is used to choosing the line of least resistance. She seems to me like a hedonist who doesn't mind having some fun, but doesn't want to sacrifice her comfort and take unnecessary risks.
In the haunted mansion she suggested they all sit in the bushes instead of taking a losing fight.
When Montresor and Will attack, she tries to escape and leave Lenore alone, and the only one who prevents her from doing so is Eulalie. I don't really blame Berenice for this situation, because she only met Lenore yesterday, but damn it, Bee actually was ready to throw her to Monty (but not ready to leave Eulalie. I know what you are)
In the hideout she is the only one who vehemently opposes Lenore's plan to escape, and to be honest, her words make some sense.
She also changes her mind very quickly in the forbidden wing scene. Although Berenice previously seemed excited about the idea of breaking some rules, she agrees with Morella that this place is pretty creepy and is ready to back down. And again it is Eulalie who made her to stay.
Berenice seems to quickly light up with any idea and just as quickly fades away at the slightest difficulty. Although she doesn't like unnecessary obstacles, she also lacks the determination to stand by her opinion to the end: in all the scenes I've mentioned, she eventually gives up. She grumbles, but follows Eulalie`s dowsing rods; she emphasizes that she doesn't like the idea of escape, and still swears a blood oath. It seems that her habit of choosing the easiest path also makes her poorly predisposed to long–term conflict: in the end, agreeing with the majority is also the line of least resistance.
I think this frame and this line sums up Berenice's approach to life quite well.
She is less competitive than Lenore, less sacrificial than Morella, less snide than Duke, but more rational than Eulalie and more active than Pluto. To be honest, I'm glad that she ended up in the same group as Lenore and Morella in the last episodes, because Berenice will definitely be able to stop them from sacrificing their lives for each other in the most noble but stupid way.
