From The Wikipedia Page Of Guarino Guarini. I Like How In That Era, Their Culture Was About Being A Polymath

from the wikipedia page of Guarino Guarini. I like how in that era, their culture was about being a polymath and intellectuals were expected to speculate on so many different topics. It would be interesting if it were like that today. Athanasius Kircher must be the ultimate example of this.

Maybe 'living life as art' is a reincarnation of this ideal.

Ballet, like opera, is wonderful because it is monstrous, the hyper-development of skills nobody needs, a twisting of human bodies and souls into impossible positions, the purchase of light with blood.

If you like Dorohedoro I think you would like the novella "Yellow Mud Street" aka "Huangni Street" by Can Xue

Yellow Mud Street is more dreamlike and has less of a lucid story arc, but the immersive grossness and beauty of the world is quite similar. I am not finished reading it yet, but I think it would appeal to those who value that kind of powerful imagery and the view of society it connects to

It's a probably a distortion based on whoever stopped sending Zheng He

*Looks up* the Hongxi and Xuande emperors.

Totally a wrong narrative, really it was admirable that these emperors didn't want to go down the overseas colonization path + they never closed off the country

a while ago i heard someone say “it’s crazy to think that china used to be a world superpower, and then one of their emperors decided he hated all foreigners and completely closed the country off, and they’ve never recovered since. imagine what they could have been if not for that one man’s decision” and the thing that drives me nuts is i know a lot of chinese history and i cannot for the life of me think who this might be about

What I love about Akudama Drive so far is how it makes you totally enthralled with Cutthroat and full of contempt for the Kansai pd in a way that's not just/not *exactly* political. It's not that I hate Kansai pd because they're perpetrating injustice (although I'm sure they are.) I hate them because there's something pathetic and embarrassing about their attempts to enforce order at all. Even if they really were protecting innocent people from dangerous criminals, there's still something shameful about how they think they can end peoples' lives for 'justified' reasons... even if those reasons truly are justified by every ethical system that exists. Just look at how grotesquely their leader behaves --- that's their soul. They will always be flailing around in futility and an endless mess... in a way that's beyond all political definitions of oppression. This show is truly intoxicating.

This is weird, but "Tong Nao" is actually a pretty accurate Chinese pronunciation of the name. The game is called "Tonnou" in Japanese, and the characters would be read as "Dongnao" in Mandarin. It seems like the publishers of this game picked a strange hybrid romanization meant to look as exotic as possible, that mixes aspects of Japanese and Chinese. I don't blame this person for trying to pronounce it as if it was Chinese.

obviously a lot of ink has been spilled on how prefacing statements with "I'm not even gonna TRY to pronounce that!" is way worse than just. trying and getting it wrong

but what really bothers me is when people mispronounce something very badly even though it's written using a phonetic alphabet

I think there's horror media that's really similar to this, where the character is 'guilty' of something but from an external perspective it was not really bad. In the story, it makes their situation feel more inevitable and helpless

I think a fun revivalist genre would be like, overbearingly didact medieval morality plays but with absolutely incomprehensible morals. like here's a heavy-handed fable about how if you use the past tense too many times while talking to your nieces, all of your milk will spoil
