1/5. Rukia Kuchiki ~ Squad 13 captan and Number One
I donāt think I have to explain this but Iāll touch over what themes I love, some of itās duality and how it all helps encompass her character as one of Kuboās best.
Upbringing and Human NatureĀ ~ Throughout the first arc, we get glimpses into how Rukia was raised and what kind of warrior culture the Soul Society had. Despite her life in the Rukon District and being treated horribly in the Kuchiki Clan, Rukia maintains that Soul Society is better than the human world, that letting an inexperienced Ichigo fight Grand Fisher on his own was considered right by her captainās standards. However, thereās cracks in these beliefs even from the moment she met Ichigo and began making friends in the human world. Itās especially more painful when she didnāt see Renji for 40 years, and knew she would have to return to Soul Society, that her brief stay with humans was where she felt she belonged, where she didnāt feel empty in the heart.
Self-Worth and Finding the HeartĀ ~ Saving someone usually means the rescuee wants to be saved right? Not in Rukiaās case, her self-loathing over her execution is visible throughout the SS arc. Itās tragic, she was forced to kill Kaien to stop Aizenās Hollow experiment from continuing to use his body, that she besmirched the Kuchiki name by giving Ichigo her powers, the guy who looks alike to Kaien. Renji and her split up decades ago due to the divide between them, and compounding all of that corroded her self-esteem to the point of her accepting her execution. However, she finds what connects her to those important people and how they care for her, the heart. Therefore, deciding to stay in Soul Society and reclaiming her self-worth.
Renji declares he wonāt leave her in the face of Aizen.
Byakuya Kuchiki protects her to fulfill his promise to Rukiaās sister.
Kaienās relatives forgive her for being the one to end Kaienās suffering.
If it can be said that the heart is unchanging, then that is strength. - Bleach Vol. 54 poem
A Soldierās Heart and Itās DualityĀ ~ At the crux of Rukiaās character is her bonds and how she got there through becoming a Shinigami. Kaien was her mentor who taught her to fight and the theme of āThe Heartā. To not die alone, to have meaningful connections is where Rukia ensures she makes sure to support her friends through her manner. I think itās really poignant that the way she tries to sway Ichigo out of his doubts and fears of his inner Hollowā¦that it doesnāt work because Ichigo hasnāt been in the shinigami life as long as she had. Ichigoās issues are far more embedded due to how heās been changed by themā¦.while Kaienās heart which Rukia metaphorically holds in her, hasnāt changed at all.
Emulating Kaienās mannerisms because Kaienās heart carriedĀ strength, Rukiaās way contrasts with Orihimeās nature, which ends up helping out Ichigo even for a moment in the Hueco Mundo arc. However, the soldierās heart is what allows Rukia to continue fighting against Aaroniero the 9th Espada, because she finds strength in it to want to save Orihime, protect her loved ones, and move past the obstacle, because she cares about the reawakened connections she has.

Well damn
i was on the bleach subreddit (braver than the us marines etc etc) and someone pointed out that momo's sword transformed mid-swing without her calling for it, which is something that apparently only happens when someone's achieved bankai. MOMO BANKAI ANYONE...
Also can we appreciate the fact that Kazui actually knows about shinigami (and probably about the Soul Society, Hollows, etc..) because Ichigo and Orihime took the time to tell him about everything. Likeā¦Ichigo was never told about his heritage, and ended up in the situation with Grand Fisher when he was younger because no one ever told him what hollows were.Ā
But with Kazui it will never be like that, because Ichigo and Orihime want to keep their precious son safe, and that involves letting him know about the world around him. Ā
Likeā¦Imagine Kazui knows about Soul Society and Hueco Mundo because heās heard hundreds of stories from his parents about it. Ichigoās probably told him several times about his first meeting with Rukia, his fight with Kenpachi, how hard he fought to keep Orihime safe. And Orihime probably told Kazui about how she awakened her powers, her healing everybody, her confession to Ichigo.Ā
And Kazui knowing heāll always be safe and happy because of how strong, courageous, and loving his parents are.Ā
Orihime Rikka outfits! + Silly Ichihime extra
I've started watching Shugo Chara, crating this was my Canon event. I have no self-control. I was unable to draw ANYTHING unless I finished this shit.
This is the post, just a bunch of Hime Designs
Concepts:
Shun-no: nurse??.
Ayame: wife kind of outfit.
Lily: superhero.
Hinagiku: Superspy, that is an alien, so doesn't know how to dress.
Baigon: samurai??
Tsubaki: assassin
Really true insight, it'll be intriguing if the final chapter gets adapted and people see the full-circle of Aizen's journey to this realization.
Honestly, Bleach is a series that took time for me to understand it's core message on the importance of connections with those who make your life meaningful, especially when that message isn't in your face like other shonen.
Looking at Aizen's actions through that lens makes me think "Aizen doesn't need a backstory to make you feel sorry for him" because his very nature is so devoid of what makes us human no matter how we change as people. So many of Bleach's characters have connections they make with each other and wouldn't be who they are without their friends and adversaries.
It always surprises me when Aizen is mostly perceived as this genius-evil-mastermind like oh he is so crazy, who knows what he'll do next!! (and he is, to a certain extent, don't get me wrong) but the silent victory has Ichigo acknowledge him as a sympathetic but ultimately misguided man who sacrificed everything for godhood only to be reduced to....utter loneliness. And I find that interesting!
Of course, this isn't a Conclusive Take (tm) as Urahara's silence definitely leaves a lot of what Aizen did as up to interpretation, but the loneliness of godhood is definitely an interesting theme, especially when you consider how often it occurs in literature, where the trope of the 'God' character playing around with lives due to his own boredom is so common (see: Frankenstein, all of Greek mythology, etc etc). It isn't a stretch to say Ichigo, the Arrancar, the Vizards, the Hogyoku and even Urahara were all just an experiment to him ā pawns he played with to ease his own boredom. It isn't exactly that he's evil...per se. It's that he's innately unable to relate to the lives and struggles of mortal beings, because his quest for more power/scientific discovery/pushing the limitations of nature render him devoid of empathy. The intent is not malicious, it's just...curiosity. Which makes him 10Ć more creepy, but ultimately not one- dimensional.
I think I read somewhere that people found Aizen to be out-of-character here in his dialogue to Yhwach in 686, but I think this is his character arc coming to a close. When he says 'people,' I think what he really means is himself and how he understands it now, now that he himself isn't as invincible as he once strived to be. When you try to alter the cycle of life, when you try to exist beyond social/existential constructs, it's ultimately a very lonely and isolating existence, and that sometimes the status quo is just a means to an end of connecting with other people (ghosts, whatever) and living in social harmony.

2/5. Orihime Inoue ~ The Princess
Why?
Sheās ridiculously quirky and really wholesome, which really added a layer of emotion to the series as the character who could be empathic with so many individuals. Her struggles and belief she builds within herself in her friends and Ichigo is beautiful to see through the show. Sheās a human teenager who wasnāt built for fighting like her friends but she still tries her best to help out and genuinely has a good heart void of killing intent.
The Orihime/Riruka interaction is even wholesome when you find out Orihime calls Riruka multiple times after TYBW lmao
Showing compassion in front of those who wronged you or are against you is hard to do. For Orihime, itās her nature to be kind and non-aggressive even to those who hurt her. Itās a sentiment that one would usually discard especially in a lot of shows. However, I see Orihime being this way as reaching out to them because she knows theyāre hurting on the inside like Sora and Riruka, or that they need to load power over her like Loly.
Throughout those experiences, sheās been able to keep her compassionate nature even in the face of all this. Obviously, I could keep on harping on how this makes her stand out from multiple other characters, but Iāll try not to. Her Fullbring powers are to reject phenomenon and I see her nature as an symbol of that, where outside events donāt get to her even in dark times, that she keeps true to herself no mater what.
WeĀ As one: are not intertwined. As two: do not share the same form. Of the third: we simply don't have eyes. Of the fourth: we have no hope in that direction. At the fifth therein lies the heart. - Bleach Vol. 27
Ichigoās conflict in the Arcancar Arc was centered around protecting his friends to the point that he wouldnāt trust them to fight with him or confide with them. Orihime also goes through something like this, which that she goes to Hueco Mundo without telling them, so Ulquiorra wouldnāt hurt them. However in her heart, she was glad Ichigo and others came for her and even had a moment where Ichigoās mysterious Hollowifaction scared her. The very thing Ichigo strived work towards to protect her and those they loved.
I especially look towards her pacifist nature being clear when Grimmjow demands she heals Ichigo so Grimmjow can kill him at full power in a new fight. Complete opposite of Unohana learning healing Kido to extend her fights, right? Thatās why it ends beautifully when Orihime realizes Ichigoās Hollow power shouldn't get in the way of her trust in him to end the fight. She comes forth to listen to her heart and gets past the idea of no hope, the Hollow eyes she stared into, Ichigoās masked form, and believes in those she cares about. She doesnāt despair.
To finish it off, her growth in the Fullbring arc is good to see pay off especially where she has faith in Ichigo to make it through, that sheāll heal him even if it gives him the opportunity to get hurt again. Plus, she even develops her Fullbring ability to the point where she can defend and reactively attack at the same time, thus keeping true to her nature while fighting back. Orihime is genuinely a character who I love from her quirky & kind nature but to also how human she is in dealing with things outside of her control, and her internal growth towards her friends.

Of course, it was Rukia who, in canon Bleach, gave Ichigo his original powers and then trained him in the ways of being a shinigami. But what if it were Renji who was sent to Karakura Town on a supposedly routine assignment, only to find himself losing his powers to some weird human? How would Bleach be different then?Ā
1. Renji would sacrifice his powers out of āweird-hair solidarity.ā
In canon, Rukiaās motivation for giving Ichigo her powers was based partly on not wanting a family of humans to die, but mostly on the fact that Ichigo just looked so much like Kaien. But in this new reality, Renjiās motivation would be based largely on the fact that Ichigo has weird hair, just like him.
(later)
Byakuya: Renjiā¦.I understand.
Byakuya: This boyā¦.has weird orange hair that reminds you of your own weird red hair.
Ichigo (bleeding on the ground): THAT was your motivation??
Renji: Hey! Donāt judge me!
2. Renji would follow Ichigo to school (in terrible clothes).
Like Rukia, Renji would stalk Ichigo until Ichigo agreed to be a shinigami. Unlike Rukia, though, Renji would show off his penchant for, just, really terrible clothing.
Renji: Yo.
Ichigo: WE HAVE A UNIFORM HERE, MAN!
Ichigo: Also what are you doing here?
Renji: Being a lot cooler than you, to be honest.
Ichigo: That is just not true.
3. Renji would sleep under Ichigoās bed.
Unable to fit in Ichigoās closet due to being giant, Renji would instead just sleep under Ichigoās bed.
[hollow warning sound]
Ichigo: Where the hell is that noise coming from?
Renji (appearing suddenly from beneath the bed): Ichigo, letās go!
Ichigo:Ā HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN UNDER MY BED?!
4. Renji would still do chores for Urahara.
After all, like Rukia, Renji would need help with his mysterious āpowers not coming backā affliction. And so would buy stuff from Uraharaās shop.
Urahara: All right! Your total comes toā¦.sweeping my shop!
Renji: ā¦or I could pay with money?
Urahara: No, that doesnāt feel right.
5. Chad and Renji would send a hollow to hell together.
I bring this up only because I want you to imagine - really imagine - Chad picking Renji up, and throwing him into the air to fight the hollow.
Renji: You are freakishly strong.
Chad: You just watched me swing a telephone pole like a baseball bat.
Chad: This surprises you?
6. Eventually, Byakuya and Rukia would come to arrest him.
I have decided that in this universe, Renji and Rukia have basically switched places: Rukia is the lieutenant of Squad 6, and Renji is an unseated officer. Heās also in Squad 6, though, because Renji still secretly wants to beat Byakuya. Naturally enough, when it comes time for Renji to get arrested, his childhood friend and the super scary captain he admires from afar come for him.
Rukia: Abarai! Abarai Renji!
Renji: K-Kuchiki Rukia, is that you?
Rukia: ā¦
Rukia: You know, it hasnāt been *that* long since we were in school together. Why are we being so formal?
Renji: Well, from my side itās mostly because of the scary, murderous look you have on your face.
Rukia: Thatās fair.
7. Ichigoās first big fight would be against Rukia.
And heād nearly lose, too. Because in this universe, RukiaĀ never hesitates to use her shikai.
Ichigo: Ice powers? Do all of you shinigami have elemental powers?
Rukia: How ignorant you are, fool!
Rukia: You donāt even know that my brother, a famous captain, has flower petal powers!
Ichigo: Flowers are basically an element.
Rukia:Ā FLOWERS ARE SO NOT AN ELEMENT
8. In jail, Renji would mostly be sad about losing Rukia.
He just canāt get over how depressing his life became after he and Rukia went to shinigami school. First he ended up in the remedial class while Rukia went to the top, then she got adopted by some hot-shot captain, and then she became lieutenant. And Renji ended up as some unseated officer. Itās no wonder heās about to be executed, he thinks.
Renji: Maybe if I had trained harder.
Renji: Maybe if I had practiced kido more.
Renji: I just got so tired of blowing myself up!!
9. But Rukia would defect to save Renji.
After her epic fight with Ichigo and 20 minute flashback, I mean.
Rukia: Ichigo, I am on my knees begging you! You have to save Renji!
Rukia: Because sure, he may be a big dumb idiot sometimes, but he is MY big dumb idiot!
Ichigo: ā¦
Ichigo: Man. Weāre both so shippy with that guy.
Ichigo: Is this an OT3 sort of situation, do you think?
Rukia: FOCUS
10. Rukia would have to fight Byakuya.
Sheād meet Ichigo during his training for bankai, let him know that Renjiās execution has been moved up, and then go off to fight her captain and brother, Byakuya.
Byakuya: Rukiaā¦.are you really going to fight me, your brother, in order to defend a scruffy peasant?
Rukia:Ā If I have to, yes!
Byakuya: Respect.
Rukia: What?
Byakuya: I mean I will never let you get away with this.
11. Ichigo would rescue Renji at the very last second.
And then do his best to strike a cool pose on top of the scaffoldingā¦while holding Renji.
Renji: PUT ME DOWN
Ichigo: Dude, I carry a sword bigger than me. Iāve got this.
Renji: THAT ISNāT REALLY THE POINT
12. And would then throw Renji directly at Rukia.
This would not work as well as the opposite did in canon.
Rukia: WHAT ARE YOU DOING, YOU FOOL?!
Renji: OH MY GOD IāM ABOUT TO KILL RUKIA
Ichigo: Wait, why did I think Rukia could catch Renji?
Ichigo:Ā Oh well Iām sure itāll be fine.
