Every year, we’re lucky to have great sponsors for our nonprofit events. Scrivener, a 2022 Camp NaNoWriMo sponsor, is an award-winning writing app that has been enthusiastically adopted by best-selling novelists and novices alike. Today, Scrivener director Julia Pierce is here to share some tips on writing your story’s middle:
We’re midway through Camp and around now, some of you may be starting to experience the curse of the saggy middle. This isn’t just a euphemism for what happens when the need to meet your daily word count target becomes all-consuming and takes precedence over your daily exercise routine. Nope, it’s that bit where the doubts about your story’s structure start to creep in… Is that storyline really as gripping as you first thought? Would the hero really make that choice…?
Unfortunately, writing the midsection of a novel is tricky—it’s where the hard work happens, the plot is driven on, characters grow and plans are tried (and fail). With this part taking up around 50% of the word count, a good rate of momentum is vital to carry the reader with you from your perfect beginning to the novel’s climax. So, how can you pep up your prose? Here are some tried and tested methods:

SUPERKIDDOS, part one! Once again I write too much dialogue… I just really like to see Damian rant. This is the gen, supersons + colin mash-up I’ve wanted for years lol so forgive the self-indulgence! Here’s the blurb:
The Supersons encounter an enemy that threatens to tear them apart: Meep Meeps, the newest fad hitting the country! When Damian gets kidnapped, however, his friend Colin must reach out to Superboy to help get their little Robin back…
Like with RSVP, I’ll be working steadily to get these out in five-page increments. For those curious, you can find all the pre-color work for this fancomic here: thumbs | inks part one

Part 1 | Part 2
Where was Chief? Why hadn’t he found her yet?
Clara tugged at the tape that held her wrists. Nothing happened. Her wrists stayed pinned to the chair.
What was going to happen next?
When was Tom going to come back?
Did he leave her?
Was she going to die trapped in this room?
Her heart thudded in her chest. She could hear the blood rushing through her head.
What was happening?
She pulled at her wrists harder, but the tape held. Her breathing quickened, as tears started to stream down her face.
What was happening?
“Let me go.” She yelled as loud as she could, but her voice only came out as a small whimper.
She could hear Tom’s footsteps get closer.
He opened the door and stepped into the room. “Stop struggling.“ His voice trailed off.
Clara could feel his eyes on her. She wanted to ask him to help, or to look at him so he could see that she was hurting, but she couldn’t take her eyes off the floor.
“Hey.” He stepped forward and grabbed Clara’s chin. “Hey, it’s going to be ok.”
She took her eyes off the floor and made eye contact with Tom, the tears still streaming down her face.
He reached behind her and undid the tape that held her wrists.
Not knowing what to do she threw her arms around Tom and started crying harder.
“It’s going to be ok,” Tom said hugging her back. “Try focusing on your breathing.”
Clara closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
“Good. Now keep doing that.” Tom bent down and cradled her in his arms.
She could feel them walking through the house until he set her down on something soft.
Opening her eyes, she saw Tom pull a large blanket over her.
“How are you feeling?” he asked tucking the blanket under her chin.
Tears still streaming down her face Clara croaked “I-I don’t know.”
“It will be ok. I have had attacks like this before. Just try to sleep, and I will start making some food.”
Clara nodded and rolled onto her side. “Why are you helping me?” She muttered quietly.
Tom froze in the doorway.
“I don’t want to hurt you. I don’t care if you believe me or not, but I don’t.”
“Why did you kidnap me then?” she asked, rolling to face him.
He sighed leaning against the door frame.
“I thought it was the right thing to do.”
“I don’t believe that.”
“You don’t have to.” He said gritting his teeth.
“You said you wanted to make Chief pay.”
“Like I said before, he left me behind. I want to teach him a lesson so he’ll never do that again.”
Her heart started to beat faster, and Clara sat up, staring at Tom. “Again, I don’t believe you. Chief would never leave someone behind.”
Tom pushed away from the wall. “You don’t know him like I did, and like I’ve said a hundred times, I don’t care if you believe me. Now lay down, and I will make some food.”
She stared at him as her heartbeat drummed in her ears. Tears sprung up behind her eyes.
Tom stepped forward pushing her down onto the bed again. “Keep breathing. I’m sorry that I got mad. Try and sleep and we can talk about it later.”
Clara glared but closed her eyes.
Thoughts swam around her brain.
Why did Tom hate Chief?
What had Chief done to him?
Where was Chief?
Was he going to save her?
Through her thoughts she could hear Tom leave the room, closing the door behind him.
Clara decided to sleep first and worry about questions later. She rolled back on her side and drifted off to sleep.
Of fucking course

Prompt: “Hi!! I’m a big fan of your Spider-Man fics!! My birthday is on the 20th and I was wondering if you’d write a fic with a really disoriented Peter (concussion or fever whatever you prefer) and tony trying to get through to him to calm him down. Maybe in the process Peter opens up about really feeling guilty about Ben. If not no worries!!”
What is up with you guys and the sad Uncle Ben requests?? It’s like you guys want to suffer? [soft whispers] who hurt you??
Lol, ask and you shall receive. Happy Birthday @ijustlovecfa!! (Won’t let me tag you, sweets.)
I think I’m going to go with concussion for this one since I just did a fever-related Uncle Ben one!
It’s a minor miscalculation, a slight shift in his arm that makes the web miss the light post he was aiming for, and it’s just enough to have Peter falling to the ground, his head smacking hard against the pavement below him.
He blacks out almost instantly, but he’s only out for a few seconds because a gripping wave of nausea brings him back to consciousness with just enough time to lift up on shaking elbows, push his mask up just past his nose, and roll over, heaving onto the road.
The sounds of his own gagging appear muffled; in fact, the sounds of the battle around him sound far away, as if he’s hearing them while emerged in water. There’s only a prominent ringing sound piercing through the muted sounds around him, and when his stomach settles, he flops back down onto his back, huffing as he watches the sky above him spin.
“Tony, Peter’s down!”
Peter frowns; the voice in his ear is far too loud, as if it’s competing with the ringing.
“What? Peter, what’s wrong? Are you okay?”
Peter wants to reply because he knows the second voice is addressing him directly, but there’s a pressure building in his head, feeling as if his head’s going to split into two, and while he can hear the words and process the words, he can’t seem to get his mouth to form a coherent reply. He only manages out a muffled groan in response.
“Shit. Cap, cover me? I’ve gotta get to him.”

Hero walked through the mall stopping at a store looking at the window display. Someone grabbed their hand and pulled them away from the display.
"Someone is following you. I'll pretend to be your boyfriend so they'll leave you alone."
Hero's heart sank. They recognized that voice. They tried pulling their hand from Villain's, but Villain pulled them closer and draped their arm around them.
"Don't fight against me. We need to pretend we are dating." Villain whispered in Hero's ear.
"No one is following me. Let me go." Hero turned to face Villain. Villain looked down at them.
"Babe, you're acting hangry do we need to go get some Cinnabon for you." They leaned closer. "Can we please not act like enemies here. Let's just be friends before we try to rip eachothers heads off tonight."
Hero glared at them. "I am hungry. Cinnabon sounds good." They said through gritted teeth. They poked Villain in the chest. "But you're paying."
