“We’re not free,” They whispered. “We never were.”
"You call that a family?" My father sneered at the loved ones I had surrounded myself with. "This is your last chance to make the right choice. Come back with me now, and there will be limited consequences. If you don't, you are no child of mine any longer."

The Principal had kept his promise. He had tried to break Liv every moment he could.
But she wasn’t going to let him.
It had been days of tests. From being left alone to being followed every second of the day, from climbing to fighting. He wasn’t letting anything stop him.
To be honest, it was wearing on her.
Maybe if I just give in it will all be over. She thought to herself.
She shook her head and pushed the thought aside. She would never let him win.
Her door clicked open, and two guards entered the room. Class time. She held out her wrists, and they clamped the shackles around them. They all walked down the hallway.
She thought they were heading towards the gym when they started going a different way.
“Where are we going?” She asked, turning to the guard on her left.
Both guards stayed silent as they kept walking through the facility.
They went up two flights of stairs before arriving in front of a door. The guard on her right opened the door and pushed her inside.
Liv stumbled and found herself face to face with the Principal.
He smiled at her and unlocked her shackles. “Welcome to your test.”
Liv rubbed her wrists as she glared at him.
“Where am I?”
“You don’t recognize this place?”
Liv looked around the room and noticed that they were standing on a catwalk above the gym, but something was off. She moved to the edge of the catwalk and looked down.
The Principal walked behind her and put his hand on her shoulder. “Do you like the changes?”
Liv just stared. The entire room was filled with water. The two-story gym filled with water. Her heart started to race.
She tried to back up, but The Principal grabbed her by the shoulders and kept her in place.
“Interesting.” He pushed her closer to the edge. “It seems that our brave student is scared of water.”
“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Her voice sounded shakier than she wanted.
Her heart started to beat out of her chest, as she stared at the water.
The Principal took a step back. “Then show me. Jump in and swim to the bottom. If you don’t,” he let out a quiet laugh, “then you have to promise to trust me. Just like Conner does.”
Liv turned and glared at him. He just smiled and motioned to the water. She turned back around.
Come on. I can do this. She thought to herself.
But she just stood there. She couldn’t get herself to move. She wanted to turn and run, but her legs wouldn’t let her. So she just stood there, staring at the water.
Why can’t I do this? She could have blamed it on the multiple tests or the sleep deprivation, but she knew it was fear.
Tears started to form in her eyes. She tried to wipe them away, but her arms wouldn’t move. She just stood there for what felt like an hour, until the Principal grabbed her shoulders and pulled her away from the edge.
“You can’t do it.” He said trying to hide his smile. “That means you have to promise that you will trust me.”
The exhaustion set in, and Liv didn’t want to fight it anymore.
“I promise.” She said looking down at her feet.
The Principal grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him.
“Promise what?” He had stopped trying to hide his smile.
Liv tried to look away, but his grip just tightened.
Too tired to fight she looked right at him, “I promise to trust you.”
He smiled and let go of her chin. He motioned to one of the guards standing by the door, and they put the shackles back on her wrists.
Feeling broken she let them guide her back to her cell as tears streamed down her face.
"Oh, come on now. Don't be like that! You know that I love you."
"I know that you say it a lot."

“Eyewitnesses claim that they saw the small girl in a red sweatshirt and black mask fight the goons and then run up the wall and disappear.”
Ruby smiled as she pulled out her earphones. She was perched on top of a building watching the police arrest the goons she had just beaten up. She had run up the side of the building like the news said and decided to perch to make sure that everything was handled.
The police finished cleaning up and started to leave. Ruby got to her feet and ran across the roof of the building. Once she got to the edge, she jumped, landing on the side of the next building. She ran up to the roof and continued jumping from building to building before stopping on the tallest one.
She sat down on the edge of the building and grabbed her backpack she had hidden there earlier that day. Ruby was a normal kid or almost a normal kid. She had to go to high school and do homework just like every other kid in the city. The only thing different about her was her powers.
She didn’t really know how she had gotten the powers. She just remembered walking to school one day, then waking up a week later with scars she didn’t have before, and abilities she had to figure out.
Her cellphone rang out from the backpack. She fished it out quickly and answered it with a perky hello.
“Ruby, did you forget about the show?” The voice on the other side seemed upset.
“Oh my goodness, I did. I can meet you at your apartment in ten minutes.” Ruby quickly pulled her mask from her eyes, stuffing it into the backpack.
The voice on the other end of the phone sighed. “Don’t bother. I’ll just go by myself.”
“Wait, Mel, I’m sorry I’ve been so busy, but I can make it tonight.” Ruby ran across the roof and ran down the building until she jumped to the road.
“No, you’ve flaked on me too many times. I don’t know what is happening to you, but I can’t handle it anymore. I’ll talk to you more at school.” There was a click, and the phone fell silent.
Ruby kept running. She stuffed the phone back in her backpack.
Mel was her best friend, and now she probably hated her. She wiped a tear from her eye.
She turned down an alley that was a block from Mel’s apartment. She was about to run up the wall, but she noticed a person standing in front of her. She slowed to a walk and started to turn around.
“Pretty impressive what you did tonight.” The voice behind her was gruff.
Ruby froze. “I mean, those guys were big, and there were five of them. So pretty impressive.” The voice continued.
She started to take a few steps from the guy. How did he know it was her? Then she realized that she didn’t change her clothes. The only thing she had done was take off her mask. It was a rookie mistake, and she couldn’t believe it had happened.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She whispered.
A laugh echoed down the alley, sending chills down her spine. That laugh sounded familiar. Why did she recognize it?
She was too busy trying to figure out where she knew the voice that she didn’t hear him getting closer to her until he was right behind her. He reached out and grabbed her arm.
Startled, Ruby pulled at his hand. Usually, that would have worked, but it didn’t seem to phase him. She decided to change tactics, she closed her hand into a fist, and punched the man in the face. Or she tried to.
The man caught her fist inches from his own face. She tried to pull her hand back, but the man’s grip was like iron. She was so confused. On top of running up the side of buildings, she had super strength. That’s why she could fight five guys, who were bigger than her, at the same time. Why couldn’t she do that to this guy?
“Stop struggling, your powers won’t work on me.” His lips parted into a creepy smile.
“Who are you?” Ruby kept struggling. Trying to loosen his grip on her hand.
His grasp tightened, and she yelped in pain. “I. Said. Stop. Struggling.”
Ruby stopped. “Thank you.” He let go of her hand and reached for his belt. She took that as her opportunity and punched him in the gut. He let out an oof, and his grip on her arm loosened. She pulled her arm free and took off towards the building.
She jumped, but he had the same idea. He caught her mid-air, and they both collapsed to the ground. She tried to crawl away, but he jumped up stepped on her arm.
She let out another cry of pain. The guy growled, murmuring under his breath. “This would have been much easier if you didn’t struggle so much.” That’s when she felt the needle.
She turned her head and saw a large syringe poking out of her arm. The man was pushing the plunger until the syringe was empty. He let out a sigh of relief and let go of her arm.
Ruby struggled to her feet, but her head was swirling. The floor and walls switched places multiple times. She ended up on the ground again. “W-what did you d-do to me?”
The guy stood over her with his creepy smile, and then her vision went black.
