loqis:
Loqi made a mental note to finally learn some Korean. Again. He could assuem what it meant and her giving future context made it quite clear, though… Millie wanted to head to Montana with her team and start investigating properly. Get the research done nice and fresh and all yourself. He could get behind that idea. He himself hated having others meddle in his engineering and mechanic work. He liked to make sure things were in order.
And Millie had been working on a story that would give her that starting leap in her career.
Still.
Glancing back to some of the reports that promised threats, Loqi chuckled.
“Oh come on… I want to see him explode about this. Finally pop one of the vessels on his temple. Please…”
It was an acted up begging voice. Of course he would keep silent, since she asked him to. Millie’s wish topped his urge to make Jacob flip the fuck out. A little, at least.
Still, he bit the tip of his tongue, looking wary.
“You know, when you release this though, he will find out. He will be even more angry then. Not that his anger issues are normal otherwise… and anyway. What is your plan? Or do you just want to drive there and… improvise? What if it really gets uncomfortable? What if… they are just a really boring fucking biblethumper club?”
Loqi earned a small frown. Her heart wasn’t truly in the expression though, more of a displeased furrow in her brow in reaction to his begging teases. “Hey, don’t be a jerk.” she mumbled to him. “I know you have a lot of conflict with him but if you tease this information, you’re not going to be satisfied with his reaction. He’ll ignore you and come straight to me.”
Part of her knew it was teasing. Part of her worried that it wasn’t.
The quickest way to shut down her plan would be through Jacob, and she hadn’t taken the time or care to truly think if Loqi would back her in this. She hoped that he would but that wasn’t very reliable.
“Tchhh.” Millie tutted. “That will be a problem for the future. I have known Jacob for over half my life now, he will be angry but it will be one explosive reaction. He’ll work through it, if it’s true we’re family...” She knew she would be testing those bonds — though he wasn’t a man who threw around weak statements. Jacob said he loved her. Cared for her like a little sister. He could forgive her.
“You could help me instead of making your mind work at double speed trying to trip me up.” she half-complained, giving him a pathetically sad look. “I don’t know where someone can look up a body guard with a gun. There’s no phone book for those, and I’m not stupid I know that I need to go there with some protection. Will you help me find someone to accompany me with the crew?”

The library was a no-brainer when a person needed to knuckle down and prepare for a study session. Though Millie had never been one for closed in spaces inspiring a good flow of thought. That was why she sat in the bleachers far-flung from anyone else.
Were there many people outside? A few, mostly those running track to prepare for the upcoming fun run. Though like the sleepy little town it was named after, Greenwood High wasn't exactly a hive of activity. And so long as she kept her head down no one was likely to bother her.
... Until someone did.
"Eh?" she asked, almost sounding the part of an offended old woman about to chastise some kid.
Looking up with a squint she had to consider Vergil for a moment. He was in a grade below her, though with blended teaching they did share a few classes together. Such as Trigonometry, where few others were enrolled, and their age groups had to be lumped in together for convenience.
"Nuh-uh. Oh no you don't, no no no." she started to make a shooing motion. "You, Vergil Nihilis, are not coming up here all in my business for my good notes and taking a little glance and walking out with a solid A plus. Not happening." she paused a beat. "Unless you tell me what's in that bakery bag."
only-we:
Jacob’s eyes stayed on Miller for those few moments he cracked that silly joke and got up again. Making sure he was fine. Miller had been his comrade for years now, and he was a capable marine beyond measure – but Jacob had never completely laid down that protective streak. Because Miller was all he had in this world. And Jacob himself didn’t much care for any bruises or even broken ribs. Jumping back to his feet right away was the first instinct. Don’t show any weakness. Never. It would only get taken advantage of.
Finally tearing his controlling gaze from Miller, Jacob followed suit and looked around to check out where they were.
Some… underground tunnel cave mixture. Though some walls were far too clean… adorned with almost elaborate carved in decorations. Like the ruins you could see in documentaries. Jacob had seen some of them – but never guessed he’d end up in one. Having his rifle up, already tactical checking at every structure that looked like a tunnel leading away from where they were, he was in a tense posture.
This was not good. This wasn’t a silo, but maybe King was still right – this would be an ideal place to hide weaponry in. And they weren’t alone down here.
“Let’s check. Maybe the others made it down here, too.”
Likely… hopefully. They needed to regroup with whomever they could find. Kolchek was down here for sure. But so was that fucking enemy soldier that had aimed at him. Pressing the button into his ear, Jacob glanced to Miller and nodded towards the tunnel, where the noise came from.
“Park and Seed here. Anyone hear us?”
They would have to be quiet then. They could possibly get a surprise on any Iraqi soldiers. This was unknown territory to them now… who knew how many enemies were down here. Advancing into the tunnel, Jacob could already feel a strange sense of dread pulling on his chest. This wasn’t like the abandoned ruins of cities and towns, this was more like the cave systems they sometimes happened upon, but… so much bigger.
There were spots of sunlight breaking through some holes, illuminating part of the tunnels in golden light. Veils of dust raining down around them. Walking further, Jacob felt as if they were being watched… but that couldn’t be. There just was Miller behind him. And the noise ahead.
The tunnel opened up into a way bigger cave. Almost like a hall – judging by some pillars carved into the stone. But crudely, worn down by time. They had the advantage of standing up on a ledge. Perfect for their usual roles as snipers – but no one was here. Not yet.
The noise had gotten louder, clearer. It was yelling. Arabic – but Jacob wasn’t sure whether there was English there, too. Nonetheless, he dropped down almost instantly, aiming into the hall. Whoever it was, judging by the yells, they could likely arrive here soon enough.
He couldn’t stop a whispered “What the fuck…” to come from him, though.
That no one answered was... well, deeply concerning, obviously. Though Kolchek hadn’t been too far. At least that’s what it felt like. It didn’t make sense that he wasn’t in the immediate area, but then again there were elaborate walls lining whatever this structure was. Wherever their squad leader had plummeted he had to be on the other side of one. Not far — but with a meter of solid stone between them that had remained steadfast through so many ages, he may as well be a world away.
They would have to navigate this unknown place. Daunting, given the size. It seemed this place could stretch on for miles. Probably overexaggerating, probably not.
Naturally he dropped down next to his sniper. He adjusted his own weapon to be within reach... if they came under fire, it was his duty to protect them. A sniper wasn’t the ideal weapon to fight their way out of a situation.
“... there are two Iraqi soldiers. Both armed.” Miller whispered to Jacob. He adjusted his spotter scope, a furrow creasing his brow. Then, he jerked back with an audible reaction. In all of their years together he had never startled like that. Their position had been compromised in less than a second because of him.
Eyes wide, he held a hand over his own mouth as if he could choke down that sound from ever happening. He exhaled a slow breath before he dared to look at Jacob. He expected to find heated anger in his eyes. Disappointment even. Though he didn’t find any of those things.
In that time one of the soldiers had been dragged back into the tunnel, the other running. Jacob had a clear shot at a man panicked and running for his life. Though somehow that was shoved aside... made less of a priority.
“I hit my head harder than I thought.” he finally whispered out. “I saw...”
Miller shook his head. It was beyond sense. Through his scope he had watched some demonic creature grab for one of the men and drag them back through the shadows. How was he supposed to put that into words?
