Thomas had come to him late this night. But not with words and gestures that could only remain between them as long as they were on ground that belonged to the Inquisitor King. No. This night he came with fear in his eyes, laboured breath from running and hands grabbing at Miller's coat.
"You have to leave! They are coming - they're coming to get you!"
Thomas was already rushing to grab whatever belonged to Miller to put it into the bagpack the soldier had brought. He had never been so agitated and Miller's questioning look would be answered with shame and guilt, as Thomas shook him once more.
"My apprentice... he swore in front of the monastery that you are a witcher... he somehow gave them proof of his accusations! They say you bewitched me. They say you deserve to burn! You have to leave before they get here! Now!"
It was a small miracle that he was still awake. Soon Nathan would stir, if his schedule this past week was reliable. He saw little reason to even tempt fate by laying down on his bedroll. His luck he'd drift right to sleep, only to be torn out of it from the cries of a very unsettled baby boy.
Yawning wide, Miller barely had time to react when Thomas burst inside his makeshift hut like a man running from the law. "What?" he dumbly asked, shaken completely out of his sleepiness in mere seconds. Who were 'they'? This behaviour was completely unlike the kindly builder who had helped make this shelter.
"Thomas." he urged, trying to keep his voice level. "Slow down, tell me what has happened?" He watched as the man he loved tore around and shoved his meagre belongings haphazardly into his travelling bag. He was grateful he hadn't reached for Nathan in this state — he was utterly fraught.
"He did what?" Miller questioned. It was a punch to the gut, that much was true. The boy hadn't been kind. Quite the opposite, he'd been antagonistic, but he chalked it up to feelings of jealousy that Thomas wasn't devoting all of his time to his apprentice. Of course he still got the lion's share of Thomas' attention but he must have been watching them closely. Must have seen something, however guarded they had been it wasn't enough. "No, Thomas — I can't just leave without you and Mila. Both of you are in as much danger in this, don't you see? You're accused of being betwitched now but I know these lands. I have been a slave here for longer than I have been a free man and I know first hand these accusations always get twisted. Where is Mila? Tell me she is somewhere safe."

Loqi made a mental note to finally learn some Korean. Again. He could assuem what it meant and her giving future context made it quite clear, though… Millie wanted to head to Montana with her team and start investigating properly. Get the research done nice and fresh and all yourself. He could get behind that idea. He himself hated having others meddle in his engineering and mechanic work. He liked to make sure things were in order.
And Millie had been working on a story that would give her that starting leap in her career.
Still.
Glancing back to some of the reports that promised threats, Loqi chuckled.
“Oh come on… I want to see him explode about this. Finally pop one of the vessels on his temple. Please…”
It was an acted up begging voice. Of course he would keep silent, since she asked him to. Millie’s wish topped his urge to make Jacob flip the fuck out. A little, at least.
Still, he bit the tip of his tongue, looking wary.
“You know, when you release this though, he will find out. He will be even more angry then. Not that his anger issues are normal otherwise… and anyway. What is your plan? Or do you just want to drive there and… improvise? What if it really gets uncomfortable? What if… they are just a really boring fucking biblethumper club?”
Loqi earned a small frown. Her heart wasn’t truly in the expression though, more of a displeased furrow in her brow in reaction to his begging teases. “Hey, don’t be a jerk.” she mumbled to him. “I know you have a lot of conflict with him but if you tease this information, you’re not going to be satisfied with his reaction. He’ll ignore you and come straight to me.”
Part of her knew it was teasing. Part of her worried that it wasn’t.
The quickest way to shut down her plan would be through Jacob, and she hadn’t taken the time or care to truly think if Loqi would back her in this. She hoped that he would but that wasn’t very reliable.
“Tchhh.” Millie tutted. “That will be a problem for the future. I have known Jacob for over half my life now, he will be angry but it will be one explosive reaction. He’ll work through it, if it’s true we’re family...” She knew she would be testing those bonds — though he wasn’t a man who threw around weak statements. Jacob said he loved her. Cared for her like a little sister. He could forgive her.
“You could help me instead of making your mind work at double speed trying to trip me up.” she half-complained, giving him a pathetically sad look. “I don’t know where someone can look up a body guard with a gun. There’s no phone book for those, and I’m not stupid I know that I need to go there with some protection. Will you help me find someone to accompany me with the crew?”

Give it their voice?
Now it was time for Loqi to scrunch his nose up a little. Finally. He had been so agreeable so far. And why wouldn’t he? That all sounded like some giant shit-show and it grated Jacob’s gears. A win-win. But now that she used these words…
“Excuse me, but that sounds as if you want to go there…”
The little questionmark at the end of that statement was implied, but quite visible in his eyes. She aspired to be a journalist and yeah, research and being present was a big part of that. But… Loqi couldn’t help having his doubts there.
“How do you want to get there? It’s a cult. Your notes state them as not the… friendliest to outsiders. And there even are some reports about people going missing you included. If that really has connections to these nutjobs, that might be a little… more than exciting. Did you inform your pseudo-brother about that?”
Millie could only answer with a non-committal “ne” in Korean. Loqi hadn’t learned the language, he wasn’t studying either so the sound was entirely out of place for the situation. In truth she had said yes to his question but he wouldn’t understand it from her lips, rather the way she looked at him, confirming his worst doubts.
She wanted to go there herself. She wanted to travel through Montana to Hope County and talk to the people trapped by the Project at Eden’s Gate.
“I’d drive a company car with others there with me, of course. There’s a deep interest back at the head office for the potential of this story. We’d be the first to break it,” she started to explain. “The only thing we dug up on Joseph Seed was back in Rome, Georgia about a man going missing under mysterious circumstances and the police report suggests it was linked to his preaching. He and John since moved and they’ve managed to keep under the radar.”
There was a long pause then. “I haven’t told Jacob. You can’t go to him with this either!” Millie insisted. “This is something that the world can’t keep ignoring and if Jacob found out about me investigating he’d go berserk.”
She considered him a moment longer. “I know you like to see him riled up, but he could kill the story. I can trust you’re not going to run to him with this?”
WOW. Really guys, no one was going to tell me about Merwin’s backpack? You expect me to just find these things for myself?!!?!?
I think this blog is where I am most owing of replies and also chats, but I must say that RE2 Remake has grabbed me by the face and the time I would use for catching up on blog-stuff is being thrown into videogaming.
Hope everyone is well <3 and I promise I’ll be back soon, just... screaming a lot and eternally out of ammo in this puzzle game and loving it.
