Damien's a guy who started pretty "high" in life : he comes from a pretty rich french family, got a nice education and all, but ended up pretty "low", mainly because of his own stupid decisions. He's waaaaay too confident in his abilities to be successful no matter what, he completely fails his classes (barely managed to pass his high-school exams) and tries to become a novelist.

Turns out he's pretty mediocre at writing, lol.

His parents ends up kicking him out because he doesn't do shit and he has to actually get shit done by himself. (Around 20 y/o) He does get a bit of money from them but that's all, he's pretty much disowned. He tries getting a job (probably in a library) and he meets a guy who's really nice to him (like, suspiciously nice) and he ends up having a crush on him. The guy suggests that Damien could live with him so that he can write his books and repay him later once he's successful. Of course Damien is 100% SURE he'll write something incredible, he accepts and starts writing.

And what a surprise, he's not gaining much money ! He can't repay the guy, no one wants his books... He has a huge crush on the guy and desperately tries to write something good to impress him (it doesn't work)... and finally get published (doesn't work either). He has to use the funds he got from his parents to start paying him back because time passes and it gets worse and worse. He starts paying rent (way too high but he doesn't know it)

The guy (I should really name him bc it's getting annoying to call him like that) starts getting into shady stuff. Damien doesn't know about it for a good while. It's getting worse because Damien has very little success with his books, he clearly can't live from it, but the guy keeps feeding his ego and telling him that, surely, the next one will be a big hit ! all so that he stays here.

By the time he's 30, Damien befriends a starting influencer he meets online, he hopes he can profit from his (future ?) popularity to promote his books. (What an asshole) They're very very different but hey, they get along well, it works.

Damien actually transitions around that time (like coming out at 28 or 29, T at 30 and top surgery at 32). When he tries to come out to his crush it goes... not that well. He's not full on transphobic (or at least doesn't show it) but he's not very enthusiastic about the idea. He starts being more agressive, asking for more money, talking about some shady guys he knows... Damien's not safe anymore and he knows it. The breaking point is when he almost gets drugged by the guy (still have to work on the details for this thing but I had in mind something about his T syringe that was not really empty and had something not very good in it).

He ends up trying to find a job overseas and stumbles upon someone claiming to be a journalist searching for a co-worker in the US. His influencer friend (Stanny) also wants to go there and they end up leaving France together.

Overconfident but also chronically unemployed, has ONE friend he tried to use for his benefit, his 10+ years crush probably tried to drug him, he's 33 and did nothing of his life and he's very self conscious about it, he's hypocritical and easily jealous but also a people pleaser, he's well educated and mannered but also naive and silly (when not completely stupid)

So yeah ! He's a mess !

So my big question was like

How the fuck does a guy like this becomes successful, what does it mean for him to become successful even ?

My 3 main OCs (Damien, Alan & Miquel) are OCs I use in rp and everytime I have a Theme or a big question about them, as a thing to focus on when working on their development

Human eating fairies

They are around 30cm tall with a big disproportionate "insect" head. Their hands and feet have only 4 fingers but they have one more knuckle compared to humans. All fairies have an ovipositor and are sexless.

The fairies have different heads depending on their role in the colony (there are no spider-fairies colonies, moth-fairies colonies, etc.).

For example, the Stag-Fairy is in charge of making a wooden baby, one of the things fairies use to hunt humans.

Humans living near fairies colonies can make them offerings in order to avoid being hunted. The fairies will then avoid hunting these humans specifically. However, if all the humans in the area make offerings, they will start hunting the ones who gave the least interesting gifts.

Offerings can be tools (like a letter opener or a bowl), clothes (doll clothes, cut socks...) or shelter. Clothes and shelter are their preferred offerings as they are particularly sensitive to cold.

While the fairies can live in pretty much any corners of the forest, they absolutely love human-made tiny houses that are much cozier and prettier than just living in a tree.

Fairies have a variety of ways to lure humans in their trap which takes the form of a web with an odd pattern. Despite having very little strings, it is incredibly effective as it is infused with magic.

Other examples of house offerings : birdhouses and doll houses.

Fairies have some kind of pet, big acarids that they use to dispose of waste (like human parts they don't eat).

When a human is lured into the fairies' trap, they start losing control of their body and slowly morph into an animal with a human face (usually sheep or pig). Fairies want to fatten their preys and doing so is easier with a pig or sheep's diet than a human's. It is unclear if the transformed humans are aware of their condition.

The fairies' singing and dancing is their main way of attracting humans in their trap, but when egg laying season approaches, they craft a living wooden baby. They then go into a human's house to steal a baby and replace it with their creation. The humans are affected by the magic put on the baby and do not notice the difference. Eventually, the parents will be lured in a fairy's trap as the wooden baby will try to go back to its creators, in the forest.

When egg laying season arrives, a queen is chosen : it has t be the strongest and most resistant of the colony as its body will not survive the process. The queen will be fed excessively as it begins to make eggs that will quickly fill its whole body. Its arms and legs will atrophy and become completely useless, its organs will be barely usable as well, just enough to keep it alive. Once the queen cannot hold any more eggs, it will use its ovipositor to lay eggs in the human baby the other fairies stole. This will kill the queen.

The eggs will quickly hatch once inside the baby and will start eating it from the inside. The larvae will feed and feed and, once big and strong, start shedding, becoming a young fairy.

The type of head they get depends on how much they fed on the baby.

Fairies do have a natural predator. Affectionately called "hat-worms" by humans, they're a magical being that work somewhat similarly to a mushroom. Their "hat" resembles a brain which intrigues fairies who are always looking for more food.

Once at range, the worm will infest a fairy through the holes in its chest, leaving there their "hat" to plug it. It will make it harder for the fairy to breathe (and resist). The worm will start by going to the brain to take control of it. Once done, it will start hollowing and filling the inside of the fairy with spores. It will then move the fairy close to the colony, fly high and explode, trying to spread the spores to as many other fairies as possible. The spores that do not directly infect a fairy become full worms.

One infected fairy can make a whole colony disappear, so seeing a parterre of worms is a sign of good luck for humans.

The twins ID cards, they're fake and they messed up their birth year so it's 1902 instead of 2002...

They bought a car... not the best idea since they're terrible drivers...

"Trainees !!!!"

They were trainees in the hospital for some time. Wasn't really their thing, they're better at getting hurt than helping others- The one in the middle is Artie, a doctor who looked very similar to Alan so he was kinda like their 3rd twin ?

"VineWood !!! It's us !!"

Their last name is Wood so when there are big letters with their name they just HAD to take a picture in front of them :')

"It's snowing!!!!"

When the snow came it was a lot of fun, they had a lot of snowball fights, including with strangers- Alan's outfit here was probably the worst he ever had ngl

"50 thelmahawaiian pizzas for the city hall"

The twins started working at a pizzeria/restaurant !!! The mayor Olivia (who's also the twins' parent but they didn't know it yet !!) bought 50 hawaiian pizzas... The prosecutor wasn't really happy about it, who's going to eat this ? Certainly not him. Also poor Alan was struggling with the numbers lol

Oh that one is a sad one :( That was not long after the twins learned that Olivia is their parent and that she disappeared (believed dead at the time). They went to the flood barrier to talk with Tanguy who promised that he'd never leave them alone. Not long after that, he adopted them officially as his children. They're a family !

Well. They had to buy a car for the restaurant, something classy and professionnal.... but the Wood's idea of "professionnal" isn't really what Tanguy had in mind. Look, there are dollar signs on the wheel !! It means it's a business car ! Also introducing Nora who quickly joined the team !

"We stole a dog !! (but not on purpose...)"

Nora and the twins (also called "the gremlins") once accidentally stole a dog. The owner just walked away and they decided to take care of the dog for a while... Not long after there was a "Missing : dog" post in the news and it really looked like this dog...

Tanguy's last name is Castagne so when the gremlins & Alice (the twins' adoptive big sister) decided to dress just like him to make him laugh that makes them the Castagnettes !

They also work at a vineyard (Tanguy's also the boss there) and it's funny to see that Nora's hair and the grapes is a bit similar sometimes.

"Commando training !"

The gremlins have two other friends, Emilio & Zacharie who decided to go in the mountains as a "commando training". They learned to avoid pumas and defending themselves, though it ended in a pretty chaotic way since Zacharie accidentally stabbed Emilio... They all had a picnic some time later to learn how to pressure someone...

Noralan date ! They actually met for the first time there, the gremlins immediately got along and became best friends. So when Alan & Nora have their first real date, it had to be somewhere special like this ! That was also their first kiss,,,

"Family"

Tanguy & Alice got the twins a necklace with pictures in the pendant for their birthday, right before they left the city. They'd be away for a while so that was a way to keep them close to their heart ! After they're also part of the twins' family now. It's something very special to them and they keep it on them at all times, especially when Tanguy died a few months later.

When they left they wrote a letter adressed to everyone they met there. It makes me a little bit sad that a number of the people mentioned died not long after lol
