It was very late that night, and most everyone had either gone home or had fallen into deep slumber. Musical instruments had been packed and shelved for the evening. Audiences, performers, and the crew had all gone away. Even the candles and lanterns and lamps all had their flames extinguished. One would think it would think that, without any flicker of life within the Opera House, it would be deathly silent. But it wasnβt. Or at least, not exactly.
Deep under the magnificent building, a number of levels below, music rang out in melodies ranging from light and peaceful to harsh and brutal. Surrounded by candles, a man sat hunched over a pipe organ, playing furiously. All while a lovely young woman stood by his side, sheet music in hand, singing to the best of her ability. Suddenly, the man playing the organ stopped.
