Not Even JRR Tolkien, Who Famously Developed The Concept Of The Secondary World And Firmly Believed That

not even JRR Tolkien, who famously developed the concept of the Secondary World and firmly believed that no trace of the Real World should be evoked in the fictional world, was able to remove potatoes from his literature. this is a man who developed whole languages and mythologies for his literary world, who justified its existence in English as a translation* simply because he was so miffed he couldn't get away with making the story fully alien to the real world. and not even he, in extremis, was so cruel as to deny his characters the heavenly potato. could not even conceive a universe devoid of the potato. such is its impact. everyone please take a moment to say thank you to South Americans for developing and cultivating one of earth's finest vegetables. the potato IS all that. literally world-changing food. bless.

LOTR character Hogwarts houses?

oooooo good question.

Gandalf- Ravenclaw (Values knowledge and wisdom foremost. Literally named the wisest of the maiar.)

Galadriel- Slytherin (Very wise, but she was also willing to follow Feanor to fulfill her ambitions of ruling a kingdom and she was tempted by the ring. Protects the people of Middle Earth and put aside her ambition to help them. Awesome, healthy Slytherin.)

Sam- Hufflepuff (This character is, in my opinion, the PRIME example of a Hufflepuff. Loyalty? Desire to protect his friends? Nurturing? Yes, very yes.)

Boromir- Gryffindor (I mean, he’s incredibly brave, protective of his friends, and a bit reckless. Excellent Gryffindor.)

Frodo- Hufflepuff or Gryffindor (Honestly can’t decide because he fits both pretty well.)

Faramir- Ravenclaw (Ultimate Nerdboy McGee. Preferred to hang out with an old wizard professor than go do boy stuff with the homies. Love him.)

Pippin- Gryffindor (While his loyalty to his friends is evident, his impulsiveness and his bravery in the face of the most terrifying danger ever makes him a Gryffindor. I mean, he literally stood up to the Steward of Gondor when he was in the throes of madness and was trying to burn himself, his son, and anyone who got in his way. You go Pippin, you funky little hobbit.)

Merry- Gryffindor of Hufflepuff (Loyalty to Pippin and Theoden and his intense study of hobbit history and culture gives strong Hufflepuff vibes, but facing off against the Witch-King of Angmar and his giant fellbeast in a terrifying battle gives off big Gryffindor vibes.)

Eowyn- Gryffindor (I don’t feel like I need to explain this one. She was literally dying to go do brave stuff. She faced off against the Witch-King. She snuck into the army. Superb.)

Elrond- Ravenclaw (Please let this dude read his books in peace. He didn’t ask to be pulled into everyone else’s drama.)

Aragorn- Ravenclaw (A hot take, but I feel like you have to be a Ravenclaw to know the history of Middle Earth to that degree and also to be able to compose amazing ballads on the spot like that. I mean, he’s brave and loyal and stuff too, but he’s also just a big nerd about a variety of topics and he’s very wise.)

Arwen- Gryffindor (“Arwen, babe, we can’t be together because you’re immortal and I’m human and also your dad wants you to go to the Grey Havens with him.” “Nah, Imma stay here with you and defy the world by becoming mortal and facing the uncertainty of a human death because I’m a badass.”)

Legolas- Hufflepuff (Totally willing to throw down for his friends. Decided to befriend a dwarf despite the fact that elves and dwarves hate each other. “Dwarves don’t go to the Grey Havens, it’s just for elves and ring bearers.” “Yeah, screw that this is my emotional support dwarf so he is coming with me.”)

Gimli- Gryffindor (I mean, he’s a big ole history nerd but he literally insults everyone the fellowship meets and tries to fight everyone so…. Also he literally flirts with Galadriel in front of her husband which is a totally baller move.)

Denethor- Ravenclaw (He’s actually really smart, he’s just a dick who went mad. Master strategist. Great example of an unhealthy Ravenclaw.)

Sauron- Slytherin (Climbs his way to the top. Manipulates Numenor to destruction to gain power. Veeeerrrrry sneaky.)

Bilbo- Hufflepuff (Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders.)

Anyway, post-canon/resurrected/reborn/survival AU/Halls of Mandos Fëanor is much more interesting to write because that's the cooldown time, that's the time for character development, for consequences, for despair, for moving onwards. Some people are so caught up in their own burning sense of single-minded purpose that they need to burn out before they can even begin to change.

Please consider: If Tolkien wasn't a coward Feanor would have been female and it would have been way cooler. a) Gives some real weight to the idea that Feanor was worried the crown would go to one of Finwe's other kids. b) More ladies in Tolkien, always a plus. c) You'd better believe Feanor's the greatest craftsperson of the Noldor- she made 7 of them! (Also the sheer drama of newly single mum Feanor and her 7 boys in Middle Earth) d) Silmarils as kids2.0 e) Blacksmith lady hot

Lady Feanor would indeed be awesome. The historical part of my brain can't help but think that critics of the time would have unfortunately interpreted ambitious kick butt single mom Feanor as a prime example of the "monstrous woman" type, ala Medea or something, who "got what was coming to her" in the end, so in a way I'm glad that the Prof. decided to write Feanor as a man so that we didn't have to deal with that nonsense.

I can't help but wonder if he'd lived at a later date if he might have considered female Feanor, I mean, this is a man who took one look at one is Shakespeare's most famous plays and said, "the answer to the prophesy is a C-section?? Booooo! Macbeth should have been killed by a woman! (And also the trees should have actually come alive)" and "its bogus that Orpheus turned around after all that and Eurydice had to die! Rip to them but if i were trapped in the underworld my wife would be different!"

And then proceeded to write his own genderbent fix it fic of both of those perennial works x)

So yeah, I think if the character had come into his head as female then Tolkien would have 100% been down with it

@prekliata-bryndza I realize what gets to me about Elrond as specifically the minstrel of Gil-galad. Obviously I have thought about Maglor teaching him, but many people have already created works on this topic better than I can. Actually this makes me think of a scene I have had in my mind for quite a while but haven’t written yet. I imagine near the end of the War of Wrath, a ship full of refugees fleeing a sinking Beleriand lead by Elros at the front steering, and I imagine Elrond at the back singing to comfort the children and the hurt and the weary, and this is how I came up with a concept of this role that Elrond fulfills first beside Elros in practice and then beside Gil-galad officially that is more than knowledge and wisdom — the close companion of a king whose role is less decisive but less constrained than a king’s, therefore providing a balance to kingliness that Elros and Gil-galad and their peoples value and need.

Just thinking about the absolute gut-punch that Elrond and Elros must represent to Maedhros.

The text is pretty clear that they take after Elwing’s line in looks, not Eärendil’s. There’s not another dark-haired, grey-eyed ancestor in the twins’ paternal line since Turgon. But Turgon also looks like his brother Fingon, and I think Maedhros would have seen that resemblance easily.

And what’s more, Elrond fully grown is supposed to look like his daughter, who looks like Lúthien. The first of many generations of her descendants who the sons of Fëanor destroyed. Dior, Eluréd, Elurín, Nimloth, Elwing.

And, of course, we cannot forget they are twins.

I can’t imagine what it must be like for Maedhros, seeing that. A neat summary of his sins; reminders of his most badly wronged victims all bundled up into one. And there isn’t a damn thing about it that he doesn’t see as his fault.

if anyone cares, Putin is not officially stepping down. Only news source as far as I can tell that’s reporting that is the NY Post, which is basically a tabloid, and that report is based on a second hand source. Putin had said nothing, and no reputable news orgs have weighed in as of yet

ICYMI: fragments of Kidnap Fam fix-it by Jirt

image

Here Damrod and Díriel ravaged Sirion, and were slain. Maidros and Maglor were there, but they were sick at heart. This was the third kinslaying. The folk of Sirion were taken into the people of Maidros, such as yet remained; and Elrond was taken to nurture by Maglor. (HoME 5, The Later Annals of Beleriand)

image

The Third and Last Kinslaying. The Havens of Sirion destroyed and Elros and Elrond sons of Earendel taken captive, but are fostered with care by Maidros (HoME 11, The Tale of Years)

image

Yet not all the Eldalië were willing to forsake the Hither Lands where they had long suffered and long dwelt; and some lingered many an age in the West and North, and especially in the western isles and in the Land of Leithien. And among these were Maglor, as hath been told; and with him for a while was Elrond Halfelven, who chose, as was granted to him, to be among the Elf-kindred; but Elros his brother chose to abide with Men. (HoME 5, Quenta Silmarillion)

By the way! BBC Merlin, in its ongoing quest to achieve ren faire levels of historical accuracy, used Actual Old English as the magic spell language. They got a professor to do a lot of the translations, though they didn't spend much effort on the pronunciation.

There are two ways that this is very funny if you watch the show while knowing OE. One is that usually when they do the "wave your hands to smash your enemies around" type spells they're literally saying very simple stuff like "jump back" and "fall." The other is that whenever they have a long incantation to read, they say vaguely related stuff for a sentence or so and then just transition into reciting Beowulf.
