The Omega Metroid Having The Time Of Its Life When The BSL’s Gravity Generators Fail.

The Omega Metroid having the time of its life when the BSL’s gravity generators fail.

In the original Metroid 2, all stages of Metroid could fly, except the Queen, and even that example might’ve just been limited by a cramped room. The same could’ve applied to Fusion’s depiction of the Omega; But by Samus Returns (and I guess Other M), the Metroids have been retconned as losing flight capabilities past the Gamma stage. And even the Gamma’s flight has become limited; Presumably because its weight has become too cumbersome for its propulsive force, which hasn’t increased with each stage, to support.

In other words, gravity. But this makes me wonder; Could the Metroid’s method of propelling itself still exist, and it just isn’t strong enough anymore? Could the Queen still have that trait, vestigial as it is? And what if gravity was not there to tether a Metroid down to a surface?

We know Metroids can survive in the vacuum of space, so imagine seeing a Zeta, Omega, and even Queen Metroid flying there. They’d still be much slower than the preceding stages, but they’d still be able to move and navigate at all, just like in the original game. and that terrifies me. Imagine the Omega Metroid in Fusion escaping the BSL through the open hangar; Though it’d probably be stranded in space and if SR388’s explosion didn’t reach it, it’d have starved before finding a food source because space is vast. But man imagine the Federation employing a Metroid space fleet…!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween has been my favorite holiday for as long as I can remember. Granted, that may be in part due to my birthday also falling on October, but nevertheless, I still love it. It’s a holiday of pure fun and celebrating the macabre. Alas, I haven’t been feeling it this year. Between politics (blech), quitting my current job, searching for a way forward in life, and a lack of new spooky content, I’ve just not felt drawn into the Halloween spirit. I’m also waist deep into the process of writing for my Metroid rewrite, and have very little to show at the moment. Still, Halloween is calling my name and I must not deny it, plus I really wanna get some more of my ideas out there. So here’s a quick post to at least get the ball rolling on some ideas for a rewritten Metroid Fusion, the game the cemented Metroid in the minds of many as suspenseful and horror adjacent.

1. Waking up

As opposed to the drawn out process of “go to SR-388, get infected, fly off, go comatose and crash into an asteroid field, get taken in and healed by the BSL station, leave the BSL, head BACK to BSL”, I’m simplifying it down. Instead of being called back to the BSL station due to an explosion on board, Samus wakes up on the operating table in the middle of the X-Parasite outbreak, similar in part to Doom 2016’s opening. However, she’s not thrust into action immediately from the onset, having some time to wake up and get a feel for the new/post surgery suit.

2. X-Parasites Science

I want to dive a little deeper into the details of the X-Parasites. Firstly, their scientific nomenclature is Anomalomimus Volans, roughly translating to “Strange Mimic which Flies”. Furthermore, I want to play more into the fact that it is an intelligent hivemind. Perhaps not Gravemind levels of intellect, but still enough to strategize and make complex decisions. However, their mimicry has a catch. They can only repeat phrases they’ve already stated. They can form new sentences, but it is difficult, and strains the limited mental capacity of each individual X.

3. X-Parasite life cycle

There is a variety of different levels of mimicry the X take on in the Metroid games. We have heard of them blending in with their prey, utilize the unaltered bodies of their prey, and even mutate into hideous new forms in order to gain an edge in combat. I have been able to come up with a few stages for a hypothetical Anomalomimus life cycle. First is the amoeboid stage, where we see their multi colored, amorphous forms floating through the air, searching for a creature to consume. This stage is temporary and, without food in time, they will disintegrate and die. Second is the mimic stage, where the X will attempt to blend in and retain its form, assessing the safety and viability of spreading in a given situation. The assessment is not exactly clinical, but it does take into account obvious factors like weaponry and escape routes… and, ya know, Metroids. If their cover is blown, they will react violently, killing all witnesses, and find a safe location to move onto their third stage. This stage can also be used in combat to aid in overwhelming and consuming a resisting population such as the Chozo. Lastly in their standard life cycle is the budding form, where their visage breaks down into amorphous slop as they begin to reproduce more X parasite offspring. I don’t have full details on this, or how the Core X fit into this, but this is where I’m at currently.

4. Scan Logs

Prime time, baby. We doing scan logs. In addition to the typical written logs and notices, I am going to be employing the Doom 2016 style holograms to relay events from the past. While I understand why they are not present in any of the Prime games, I do think they are a tool that make for some interesting storytelling opportunities, (especially in a show or movie, but that’s a discussion for another time). I will try to keep extensive scans sparse as it can be easy to oversaturate the inclusion of logs in a written story when the format already allows a window into how Samus deciphers situations around her.

5. Stakes

I will freely admit to not knowing a great deal about Metroid Fusion’s plot beyond the general outline of things. Some people may then find my reworking to be a bit dishonest in some ways to the source material. With that said, the stakes will be laid out from near the start, and the clock will start ticking. The X parasites have overrun the BSL Station, with near free rein over all of its systems. There are still some guard rails, but it’s only a matter of time until they find a way to send the station toward a well populated planet and spread. Samus, in addition to finding the truth of what was happening on board this station of doom, must ensure the X Parasites can never travel to another star system. If they do, all life in the galaxy is at risk.

6. The SA-X

The SA-X has been an extremely iconic villain due to its stalking behavior and sheer advantage in power over our recovering hero, in addition to being a demented, dark reflection of her. That being said, I think the mutated design for the SA-X feels a bit… uninspired? I simply feel that it just doesn’t add much to the design in its current form. However, the idea of the SA-X mutating is one I’ll keep. Instead of… whatever we have in canon, these mutations will come in the form of the SA-X attempting to keep cohesion with Samus’s spliced DNA and growing more Chozo traits, but deformed and uneven. Half a beak here, a featherless wing there, some mismatched eyes. It will exceptionally uncanny for Samus, given her relationship to both humanity and the Chozo.

7. Neo Ridley

There will be no Neo-Ridley… kind of. I feel like the years have really dulled the effect of having another clone of Ridley, so I will not be including one. Instead, BSL station will house the only other member of Ridley’s species known to the Galactic Federation, an individual named Neo, who provides insight into Ridley’s origins. His copy, Neo-X, will also feature some inspirations from Dread, including a ranged attack of black muck instead of fire, and mutating his wings into additional arms, alongside twisting its head 180°, allowing it to crawl along the walls and high speeds.

Hopefully, this turned out to be an interesting view into how I plan to bring my own spin on Metroid through a different storytelling format. My first project for this rewritten Metroid series is going to be a modified version of the Metroid Zero Mission manga. Stay tuned for updates on that! (If I ever get around to them>.<)

It’s my blog, and I get to nerd out about Metroid fan covers if I want.

Track 10: Power

I swear, I love this track so much. I was never a fan of the original Raven Beak theme. The percussion felt lacking, the vocal element didn’t seem to match the gravity of the situation, and the overall track just seemed discordant and lacking pattern. However, “Power” absolutely improves upon the base track in almost every way I can possibly think of.

The entire album returns a lot of old leitmotifs, from the iconic Brinstar depths, to the chase theme of the SA-X. Most importantly to “Power” is the eerie loop of the Super Metroid save room. It appears elsewhere in the album, but it is actually the first leitmotif within the final track. Its inclusion is brilliant. Raven Beak has been spying on us, lying to us, and manipulating us through the Network Station save rooms. To hear this leitmotif turned sinister is a perfect display of the realization that we were never alone, and NOT in a good way. The track then transitions into Samus’s theme, then Raven Beak’s leitmotif in a monologic fashion, perfect for Raven Beak’s declarations and ordering of Samus to capitulate. The almost vocoded vocal element really excels here as a low hum in a moment of intermission. You can imagine Raven Beak pacing about his thrown room explaining the necessity of his schemes, and his justifications.

Then as the actual battle portion of the song begins, we see that the pace is slower than the original, allowing the Raven Beak leitmotif to really shine and draw itself out. The save room leitmotif is carried over, as well, adding some variety and vigilantly reminding us of how well our enemy knows us. The full vocal rendition of his theme just fits so damn well with his overwhelming power and technology. We actually get a bit of the heroic part of Samus’s theme as well, perhaps to mark a significant set of blows. Then a brief interlude of the darker first half of her theme, no doubt signifying Raven Beak losing one wing and tearing off the other himself. The final act of the song shows a distinct level of desperation on the part of both combatants. We can imagine that they are both running out of resources, and the looming threat of planetary destruction. The finale showcases Samus’s theme and closes very upbeat. However, we all know that victory doesn’t quite happen as Samus anticipated.

It’s My Blog, And I Get To Nerd Out About Metroid Fan Covers If I Want.

Though it does come in the end

This track has given me several ideas for my own rewrite of the Metroid saga. I constantly had the idea of the throne room being heavily damaged throughout the fight, cuz, I mean

It’s My Blog, And I Get To Nerd Out About Metroid Fan Covers If I Want.

Look at that massive beam. There is no way he isn’t at least singing the banners. However, “Power” makes me think more into it as symbolism for Raven Beak dismantling Chozo society and morals in order to fit his own insane agenda and ideals. I could even see the towering Chozo statues tumbling down onto him during the final phase of the fight, as if their likenesses are throwing themselves upon him, begging him to cease this madness, to stop attempting to kill his own daughter. I also imagine both of them losing weaponry and tools throughout the fight as well, further amounting to their desperation as they run out of power bombs, super missiles, miniature suns, and other critical ammunition. I also like to think of Raven Beak using a spear like other Chozo warriors, but being disarmed of it throughout the fight, showing that he is no rightful heir to their legacy. There are so many ideas floating through my head on the matter.

In any case, Sam Dillard did excellent work here. And you should ABSOLUTELY check out the album! The link for it is in the video description.

You know, I haven’t seen anyone talk about how damn LOUD Thardus is! He is so damn loud it is intense! Granted, I haven’t played Metroid Fusion so I can’t really compare it to Neo Ridley, but it’s still gotta be up there. He just drowns out everything, even the music.

“Better To Put An Idea To The Page And Draw It Badly Than Never Set It Free.”

“Better to put an idea to the page and draw it badly than never set it free.”

The comic begins with a shot of our protagonists from behind.

Raven Beak is a tall, armored Chozo with an ornate headdress and a red cape with embroidered stoles. His pauldrons are flared and his eyes are red. Grey Voice is an old, grey Chozo with an appearance similar to that of a hawk or an eagle. He has yellow eyes and wears brown robes.

Raven Beak speaks first: "Thank you for joining me, old friend. There is a gift that I would like to impart upon you."
Raven Beak kneels, producing a long, rectangular black box with an ornate clasp which he presents to his comrade. Grey Voice looks on, intrigued.
This panel is a top-down shot. The box is open, revealing red velvet lining and a corkscrew-shaped blade with a navy blue hilt.
Grey Voice is astonished. We are granted a view from below, the lid of the box obscuring the bottom half of the screen as Grey Voice's face peeks over the lid. His beak is slightly agape, his yellow eyes studying the weapon in front of him.
Our view is now behind Raven Beak, the back of whose head takes up the lower right side of the panel. Grey Voice is situated on the left side of the panel, holding the now closed box in both hands.

Grey Voice speaks: "Raven Beak, I cannot accept this. It is too precious to your people."

Raven Beak responds frankly: "It is for our daughter. She is of my people."
The "camera" is still behind Raven Beak, but our view shows the scene from the exterior of a hallway, as though the viewer is watching the engagement from outside the room in which it takes place. The characters are backlit, as though the scene's lighting comes exclusively from the open doorway. Raven Beak is much taller than Grey Voice, so the latter must look up to address him:
"I appreciate the gesture, but she is much too young to wield this."

Raven Beak replies: "It is impossible to be 'too young' for a blade, Grey Voice. Kra hul, she is destined to be a warrior."
We now view the pair from the side. Grey Voice offers the box back to his compatriot, looking a little weary. Raven Beak continues to refute the shorter Chozo:
"You could not refuse this gift, even if I approved."

Grey Voice starts up with a rebuttal, but is soon cut off:
"Come now, don't be-"
"Such an act would upset the ancestors."
All color drains from the panel. Grey Voice is conveyed in simplistic shapes against a dark grey background. He is completely white. Dead silence fills the air.
Still achromatic, the only thing that changes in this scene is the building sweat dripping down Grey Voice's forehead and the fact that he breaks the silence:
"What."

Raven Beak promptly responds: "They would reconstitute your biological matter in pursuit of vengeance for your disrespect."
Color returns to the comic. Grey Voice and Raven Beak are now depicted very tiny on the bottom left-hand side of the panel, arguing in earnest. The background gradates from yellow to grey.

Grey Voice begins the interaction by stating: "You're giving our daughter a cursed relic."
Raven Beak elaborates: "Not cursed: sacred."
"What's the difference?"
""Curse" implies the retaliatory mutilation is malicious."
Grey Voice is exasperated. "As if it isn't in this case?!"
We are looking at Grey Voice from behind Raven Beak: all we can see of the latter is his red cape cascading from his shoulders. Grey Voice is talking now.
"Though I should not discount the possibility that you are merely yanking my plumes, I beg clarity on the matter... are you telling me that I'm risking my life talking to you because some long-dead warrior is sentimental???"

Raven Beak chimes in: "Don't be rude, now."
We are granted a front-facing view of Raven Beak. The top half of his helmeted face is obscured by the upper boundary of the panel, his face shrouded in shadow. His glowing red eyes break through the darkness. He begins his lecture:

"That is my great-great-great-great-great grandfather you are insulting, brother in blood. Please choose your next words wisely: I am duty-bound to defend their honor by way of a duel if you disdain their legacy... and I would not like to leave our daughter short a father."
The panel takes a very light-hearted tone in terms of coloration, with a desaturated salmon pink background. Raven Beak holds his hand up, eyes closed in a friendly gesture, as though to defuse the situation. He is filled completely in grey as opposed to being rendered in full color agaisnt the monocolor background.

Grey Voice inquires from offscreen: "Are you threatening me?"

Raven Beak responds rather casually: "No, I am politely asking you to consider the spirits' wishes. A "threat" would entail me drawing my weapon, pointing it in your direction..."
"...and commanding you to accept this gift before I snuff the flame of your eternal being, drawing upon the embers to light the torch that I will personally use to champion your essence straight across the innumerable stars and back to the yolk of the world-egg."

The colors used in this panel are noticeably darker and more saturated. Raven Beak is leaning forward, his glowering face taking up the entire left side of the panel as the black speech bubble takes the right. His visible eye is glowing fiercely. The text on his speech bubble is white, with the word "personally" rendered in red for emphasis.
The background returns to a fluffy pastel hue: this time, a lovely mint green. We are viewing Raven Beak from behind, as he takes up the bottom right corner. Grey Voice is located center-left, depicted smaller to convey distance. He looks to be in disbelief.

"I can't believe you're doing this to me..."

"What?" Raven Beak replies.
"Threatening me!" Grey Voice shouts. His neck stretches cartoonishly out from his shoulders, his face closing in towards Raven Beak as the commander shrinks back into the right side corner.
The camera is behind Grey Voice now. The background is dark, and we are staring up at Raven Beak's intense form, colored dark grey to communicate extreme tension. It looks like our militant elderly protagonist is about to explode.

"Was my firing arm not affixed to my side during that engagement??"

Grey Voice yells back, "You are impossible. Just give me the damn blade!"
The tone shifts immediately when Grey Voice accepts Raven Beak's gift. The gradient background descends from orange to dull purple as Raven Beak gingerly takes Grey Voice's wrinkled hand in his own, clutching his compatriot's digits within his armored grasp and taking care not to nick him with his pointed talon caps.

A close-up of Grey Voice's face is shown in the top right: an astonished yellow eye and raised, wrinkled brow convey his surprise.
The gradient background descends from wine red to a muted, glowing yellow. Raven Beak's helmeted visage is situated on the left-hand side and lit gently from below. He waxes as he begins transfer of the boxed blade to his cherished friend.

"Many and one, blood of my heart..."
Raven Beak continues his heartfelt speech as we view the pair from the distance, the scene bathed in black and white. Our protagonists appear as dark shadows in the distance atop a grey and white gradient background, the sunrise of their alliance giving hope for the future.

"Across the river of war and toil has this relic come to rest on easy shores... to join us in the hearth of our souls' labor, passed eons from old hands to new, falling roost in our-"
"Yes, yes, my thanks extend across the endless sea of night. Now go back to your ship."

Grey Voice interrupts Raven Beak's bleeding heart and whips around, clutching the box close to his breast as his aging face flushes red. Grey Voice lies on the right side of the screen, walking away from a comically simplified expression of Raven Beak in the top left.

Raven Beak is an individual of science. He's also a sentimental warrior poet who is not immune to superstition. How will his daughter learn to gut her enemies if he doesn't pass down the family heirloom? Also grandma will be disappointed if the sword doesn't go to Raven Beak's first-hatched.

Started late 2023.

Extras:

A sketch writ upon a medium grey background. Raven Beak grips Grey Voice's shoulders with his armored talons, exaggerated sweat bullets visible on the forehead of his helm. Grey Voice is visibly rattled. Raven Beak says, "Grey Voice, I can feel nonna's baleful gaze fixed upon the back of my skull as we speak. Take the fucking blade." The last sentence is italicized for emphasis.

Maytroid… sort of… part 5!

Now, we come to the end of my little Maytroid series. If you want to understand what’s going on with these, I’d recommend glancing at the previous posts in this little series in order to understand what’s going on with this. In hindsight, I sort of wish I had put a little more time and effort into these, but I suppose it cannot be helped now. I do still enjoy the world building these have allowed me to do, and in many case have laid out the groundwork for some very interesting storytelling going forward, from the cult like worship of Phaaze, to the mysteries of SR-388. I hope to flesh these things out in future stories, but something I’ve learned from some prior experiences is to hold myself to a standard of passion over consistency. I can’t give any promises on when any of these story arcs will be properly written and posted. For now, though, onto the finale of his little series.

Day 27: Golden Torizo

Zebes Rebuilt Archive Scan

“The process to control the Torizo guardians has been a long and arduous process, with much trial and error. The Torizo are sentient, containing the souls of long deceased warriors of the Chozo. Many of my archives on Chozo spiritual studies have been lost due to the destruction of the initial archive made by my creators, so I am unable to ascertain the exact process of imbuing the soul into one of these guardian statues. Current efforts to convert the Torizo to our side have centered around continuous logic routines and straining the mental faculties of the guardians. Their on control over themselves is absolute, and they will never make a move to harm a member of the Thoha Hasana. This has had no hope of change. However, this should not pose an issue.

Ridley has personally taken one of the Torizo to convert by way of immense emotional trauma. He has regularly destroyed artifacts of great spiritual significance to the Chozo in front of the Torizo. Once a week, he has commissioned for me to create a biologically perfect Chozo egg, which he proceeds to consume in front of the Torizo. The fact that the egg is infertile has not been acknowledged. Other acts to emotionally torment the Torizo include footage of violence against animals and civilians during his raids on Galactic Federation Space and during recreational hunts, and playing footage of the massacre of the Chozo during his attack on Zebes. Such methods have shown only minor success in breaking the Torizo’s will. However, I believe he simply seeking personal pleasure from the guardian’s suffering.”

Day 28: Metroid Prime

Promise to the Entrusted One

“We have failed. While the great poison has been sealed away at its source, our population is all but dead. Only seven of us remain. We cannot hope to finish this, nor rebuild the society we once knew. Our creations are insufficient to end this. We are scientists, not the great warriors who fell to protect our world. Still, we toil, in hopes that you, the entrusted one that greatest of us foresaw, can succeed where we have not. We gift to you the armor perfected for your use, utilizing the one organism the Phazon does not infect. Go forth, hatchling of the Chozo, and save this world. You cannot save us, but this world of beautiful creatures can live on. From the trees to the fish to the very fungus that protects you in this armor, you can save this vast, wonderful world. Go forth, and free this world.”

Day 29: EMMI

Report from GFS Sunset Homage

“EMMI unit S-11 has infiltrated SR-166. Preliminary readings show minimum atmospheric Phazon contamination in general planetary range. However, creatures around the crash site have already undergone Phazon induced transfiguration. Several carcasses within a 45 mile radius of the crash sight have been found with no signs of predation and have shown definitive signs of Phazon Induced Cell Death (PICD). While exacerbating preexisting ailments has not been ruled out, current evidence points to death due solely to PICD. One herbivorous creature seen displaying erratic behavior was euthanized by S-11, and was found to have PICD in several areas of the brain.

It is this researcher’s opinion that the entire north western continent of SR-166 be put under strict quarantine. We have seen in other cases how the Phazon infestation of a planet can begin slowly but escalate exponentially. We cannot risk the Phazon crisis reach the Galactic Federation’s proverbial flank.”

Day 30: Mother Brain

Secret Agreement

“Your purpose will not be to enforce order. You will not bend the Galactic Federation to my will or push politics from the shadows. You are not an agent of peace. You are my monster. You will have your fill of blood and sadism. You will be my agent of evil to sic on those who fall astray from cooperation. You will be nothing more or less than yourself, but only where I choose. This war will last forever, and you will be the wolf for the sheep to fear. You will be the enemy.”

Day 31: Mission Completed

Mission Report

“Mission was successful. Metroid presence on SR-388 has been eradicated. Signal coming from the cavern was created by highly mutated Metroid, which was put down as well. However, I have saved and catalogued data on all Metroid permutations encountered for future reference. Glaxamore presence on the planet was low, but I did face a brief encounter with Ridley. He was beaten, but due to the arrival of the planetary super storm, I cannot confirm the kill. Additionally, I have disobeyed orders slightly. I discovered a Metroid hatchling during its hatching process. It has since imprinted on me, and has shown no signs of aggression. I have taken in the Metroid for study by the Galactic Federation. I already have drafted paperwork to ensure that it will not be tampered with for purposes of bioweapons research, and hope that the energy they metabolize can be used for something positive. Against my better judgement, I have given the hatchling a name. It’s the name of a pet I used to have before the Chozo took me in, Pyonchi… Computer, strike the last two sentences from the record.”
