Just one bite..

One thing I’ve been thinking a lot about behind the scenes is what Gaster’s recovery would be like and who would play a role in it. Refinedtale is, as the name suggests, always being refined and changed as I develop it. This comic and what happens in it are subject to change.. but I’d like to think some of Gaster’s first movements and reactions to things were triggered by seeing Sans upset. In this comic, as was stated by Sans, its been over a month since Gaster was pulled out of the void.. and thus far he’s just been a husk. No talking, no movements, just.. stillness. And no one can figure out why he’s not getting better. This most likely isn’t the first time Sans has cried in front of Gaster since he’s been back, but it could be the first time a memory was triggered because of it. 

In this timeline Sans and Papyrus are under a lot of stress, so much so that Toriel would swing by almost daily to check in on them and bring them food. And one time she brought them butterscotch pie to eat. She gave Gaster a slice too.. well, she more of posed him like a doll to hold the pie and fork. She tried to show him how to eat, but Gaster just.. didn’t respond.

..”He’s just not there yet”.. Sans couldn’t finish that sentence before trailing off. Those first four words, “he’s just not there.” It hurt to acknowledge. Toriel tried to save it and reminded him that its “yet”, he’s just not there, yet.. But Sans’ emotional state was very fragile up to this point. He was on the edge of breaking down due to all the stress he and Papyrus were under. And that was it, that phrase pushed him just a little bit further.. and he started crying. 

Seeing Sans cry and hearing him say that he was scared triggered something within Gaster. Parental instinct perhaps? It moved him, metaphorically and literally. He recalled a time when he was more whole, a time when he could speak. He was ill back then wasn’t he? He needed to eat, But he really didn’t want to.. so then why did he?.. Because it would make that child feel better if he did.. He didn’t understand how he was moving or why he felt a sense of urgency.. but none the less he managed to move his weak arm and coordinate his movements enough to take just one bite..  And his soul felt a bit warmer after. Seeing Sans just light up after he took that bite made him feel like he did the right thing.. even if he didn’t really remember Sans or understand what he just did..

Again, this comic is subject to change due to my AU constantly being refined and developed.. but for now, this is one of the first times Gaster made it clear that he’s still alive, and he’s still in there somewhere.. He just needs a little more time..

Hhhhuhhnngnnnng..I’m never doing a huge project like ever AGAIN!! UHG that took forever. I’m so friggin tired and hungry man, I haven’t moved since I woke up because I was determined to get this out today. Anyway it feels like a weight is being lifted off my chest having this thing done. I’m glad I can return to drawing whatever I want without this project looming over my head.

Also, in case anyone is wondering why it seems like Papyrus is drooling all over the place, see this post, face row 6 for your explanation. :]

Also these poor babies. Why do I do this you might ask? I wish I had an answer man, reeeeeally wish I did. I don’t have much else to say, I cant really think of anything. I guess I could point out that Papyrus is still scratched up because he used up all his energy on healing Sans and Gaster really doesn’t have the magic to spare..

(it starts to storm and furina thinks its because he's remembering how annoying and frustrating it was working with her, and meanwhile neuvillette is three seconds away from throwing himself on the ground and begging for forgiveness)

but that was Elian’s familiar smell

and his voice as he grunted-

“It’s me,” she whispered

Elian halted, and something dropped to the floor

a knife?

Lira smiled. “Hello, you.”

“Fuck,” Elian whisper-shouted, stepping back. “Lira?”

moonlight streamed in, and Lira took in his unmade bed, his shirt lying on the floor, his boots scattered somewhere

he had awoken

“I’m sorry,” she laughed softly. “I wasn’t planning on frightening you-”

he took her cheeks, looked into her eyes, and tipped her head back

next thing she knew, he was kissing her

full of love

one of his hands wrapping around her waist, bunching up the dress she’d put on after climbing out of the sea

Elian pulled back slightly, watching her with a dazed smile. “I thought you were a thief planning to gut me.”

“Just a regular thief.”

“Ah, how reassuring.”

Lira smiled, wrapping her arms around his waist. “I’ve missed you, Captain. And I wanted to wish you a happy birthday.”

she left a gentle kiss on his jawline, as Elian smiled. “It’s not until tomorrow.”

“I know,” Lira said. “But I wanted to be the first to congratulate you.”

“By sneaking up on me?”

“Yes, of course.”

Elian laughed softly. “My darling seashell, I love you, but please refrain from giving me a heart attack in the middle of the night. I could have hurt you.”

“If I’d known you’d throw a knife at me, I would’ve been more careful,” she teased

“I’m sorry,” he said, a little sheepish, lips touching her cheek

“Hey,” Lira said. “Can we go back to you saying how much you missed me?”

“I said no such thing.”

“You don’t need to, either,” Lira said back, a little snarky. “You haven’t let me go since I came in.”

Elian sighed softly, knowing she had a point, and there was no use teasing her when she could see right through him

he touched her cheek, kissed her lips once. “And I don’t intend to, either.”

(they’re both talking in wingdings. :}) Here’s part one, two and three. Two parts back to back boii!!! And hey! This one only took me two days! not too shabby in my opinion. This was supposed to be posted earlier today but my computer froze to a full stop and then I had errands to run.. but its here now!

Like the last part I tried to be mindful on Sans’s behavior and how he would respond to this. In this comic Sans feels absolutely horrible, but he loves his family to death and seeing Gaster’s face like that just freaked him out. He struggles to get up in the 8th panel, but knows he needs to because something is wrong. In panel 15 Sans is looking at Gaster with this look of fear and concern, but only because Gaster is crying.. he never sees him cry..

Originally, in the third to last panel, Sans was supposed to say something to the effect of, “b-but.. he needs me.. if he’s upset, i gotta see him..” But when I saw what it looked like before the dialogue, I realized it would’ve hit so much harder without it.

Gaster sees his son looking this.. terrified and upset.. Like, what is he doing?? Saying he cant see Papyrus and crap! Sure he’s right and Sans shouldn’t be moving.. but He’s already seen Papyrus like that and it felt terrible not being able to do anything about it. He isn’t about to let that happen with his other son. Sans is crying and wants to see Papyrus, oh he cant walk? Don’t matter if he’s like 13-15, he gonna be carried up those stairs whether he likes it or not.

And in case anyone is wondering about Sans’s multicolored dialogue.. just because Sans is awake, doesn’t mean he’s okay.
