I invented Human Chow once! When I was in high school (and already very ornery on account of that) I found out that I had dietary restrictions, and decided I did not want to deal with that. So I teamed up with some actual nutritionists from the hospital that my mom worked at to create the cheapest, lowest ingredient, meal that I could eat three times a day indefinitely. Including all of the vitamins and nutrients that I would need, as well as the proper caloric balance. As I recall it involved soybeans, tomatoes, spinach, olive oil, and various veggies I could all get dried or frozen at the store. Then I put it through a food processor, and froze it into portioned pucks. It looked like vomit, tasted like whatever spices I threw on top of it that day, and meant I didn't have to worry about what I was eating for literal months, at the low low cost of being incredibly weird (and 25cents per plate). 10/10, I should get back to that.

I did, in fact, think of the meal cubes. I put it in an ice cube tray a couple of times, but I never did figure out how to dye it properly.

so tired of having to cook and trying to figure out wtf to eat, can I just have like. Specialized human dog food or something, like some vegetable and protein biscuits and a special drink so that I only have to think about maybe cooking something once a day instead.

How to bookbind your fanfic!

Part 1: From AO3 to printing

The necessary first step is turning your AO3 fanfic into booklets. Your whole book will be a bunch of booklets piled on top of each others and stitched together.

Booklet examples:

How To Bookbind Your Fanfic!

Btw, this is the official Word tutorial on how to make a booklet.

You can see there are different options. I usually do 8 pages, which is what you will see in the video. This means that a booklet of 8 pages is two sheets of paper, printed front and back, folded and one put inside the other. To have your word pages in the correct order you will need to format your word document.

Everything is in the video but here is the text for easy reading (btw the fanfic I used is Exit by schwutthing, an amazing Valjean/Javert fic)

Do not download the fanfic on AO3. Click on "Entire work" and copy paste it on word.

Format your word document. Click on File-> Margins. Select "Multiple pages: Book fold" and "Sheets per booklet: 8". Put "Gutter" to 1cm.

Double click on the empty area just above your text, on a random page of the document. This will make the "Do not download the fanfic on AO3.

This will make the "Header and Footer" option appear. You can click on "Footer" and select the format for the pages' number. Always add the pages number, it will make your life easier.

Now you can justify your book. I usually justify (select all text with CTRL+A and click on Justify), but keep in mind that some documents might not enjoy passing through "justify" so double check your final document. For example, if there are lines of poetry and the author wrote into the next line without starting a new paragraph the justify option will make it weird.

Make your book pretty! I added some illustrations and blank pages. I also made the title of the fanfic bigger.

Fix the chapters' titles and notes. I clicked on Home-> Find and searched for "Chapter", so I could select on each chapter title and make it bold, and also delete the "Chapter text" added just after. You can do the same with "notes" in case you want to delete notes.

Now it is time to print! I prefer to save in pdf before, so I will do that.

IF YOU HAVE A PRINTER THAT DOES NOT PRINT BOTH SIDES

Click on print

Select "Microsoft print to pdf"

Select "Manually print on both sides"

This will create two different files pdf, one for the front pages, and one for the back pages.

How To Bookbind Your Fanfic!

Click on the file for the front pages and print them all. Do not panic if you see the pages number all over it.

Now take your printed (only on one side) block of pages and load it into your printer again, making sure that you will now print on the blank back. Open your back pages pdf file and print.

(you can do a trial with a few pages to see if everything is lining up correctly).

IF YOU HAVE A PRINTER THAT PRINT BOTH SIDES

"Click on print

Select "Microsoft print to pdf"

Select "Print on one side"

This will create a single pdf that you can print on your both-sides printer. You will see that the page are not in the order you had on the word document, but the whole file will start with page 8 (see video).

Now print!

What you want is this:

How To Bookbind Your Fanfic!

You can see that on the front you have page 8 first, page 1 after, because when folded it will end up with page 1 at the start of your booklet! And on the back of this first sheet you have 7 and 2, that will end up in the correct position.

Now you will have a lot of pages... time to fold and create your booklet! Every two sheets... you will fold as you see above.

Next post will be specifically about folding the booklet, making the holes and sewing them together.

THE FINAL PROBLEM - Part 1 Of ??many. If The Context Is Confusing, Please Check The Date And Remember

THE FINAL PROBLEM - part 1 of ??many. If the context is confusing, please check the date and remember that we last saw Holmes in early 1891 - or better yet, read the original story!

This is in the Watson's Sketchbook series!

cursive text (which is all canon, btw) under the cut for those who need it:

4 May, 1893

It is with a heavy heart that I take up my pen to write these, the last words in which I shall ever record the singular gifts by which my friend Mr. Sherlock Holmes was distinguished. In an incoherent and, as I deeply feel, an entirely inadequate fashion, I have endeavored to give some account of my strange experiences in his company. It was my intention to have said nothing of that event which has created a void in my life which the lapse of two years has done little to fill. My hand has been forced, however.

It lies with me to tell for the first time what really took place between Professor Moriarty and Mr. Sherlock Holmes...

I actually can't survive without one on my wrist; I have one of those brains that lacks a time sense and it's the only way for me to get my brain to understand where I am in the day. The little numbers exist in a vacuum; they tell me nothing. Notches let me count how far I am from noon and midnight, two states of being my brain understands to exist separate from the nebulous reality of 'past' and 'future.' "It is 3 o'clock" said in a vacuum might as well be "it is Orange pm EST," but if I look at my watch I can see that it is three units of time roughly equal to three 20minute tvshow episodes past noon, halfway until the time designated for dinner, which is halfway to midnight from the time when the sun is directly overhead. This may possibly make me an outlier to the analogue/digital debate, but I do own a watch that has 24 hours as well so there's that.

i'm old enough to have been taught how to read analog clocks in elementary school. i was never good at it. i wore analog watches for years and didn't get much better at it even though i look at my watch several times an hour.

i don't understand why people get so pissed about newer generations ditching analog clocks. am i stupid? what would we be missing out on without them?

well dangit now I'll never unhear it

Is the whole scene with Shen Yuan self destructing basically not JD and Veronica during ‘Meant To Be Yours’?

ok but to be fair 'to give [thing] a fair tumble' is a legit expression for trying/giving something a chance (as in a tumble of the dice) as opposed to 'a tumble' meaning *ahem* mature activities (from the longer euphemism 'a tumble in the hay').

But the thing is both of those were known at the time so it could be surmised that this is a double entendre, thus foreshadowing her romance with Peter.

As we all know, Spider-Man can never resist a good pun ;D

Slang That Either Already Meant Something Other Than What The Writers Thought It Did Or Whose Meaning

Slang that either already meant something other than what the writers thought it did Or whose meaning REALLY shifted in intensity between now and 1965. Amazing Spiderman 31
