Hey I Think I Can Help! My Dad Is From Rural America And My Mom Is A Fancy Lady From The Big City (it

Hey I think I can help! My dad is from Rural America and My mom is a Fancy Lady from the Big City (it was a real scandal) so my sib and I are oddly bilingual in one language. In certain rural dialects "Old Man" (especially with a possessive adjective i.e. 'mine' 'her' 'your') is used to mean specifically a patriarch of the family to which a person belongs (which can be father or husband, as you said, but can apply to grandparents, stepparents, or other male relatives that fill that role) as in "my old man won't let me out tonight, but you best believe I'm goin' anyhow." It has a level of exasperated affection; there are many old men, but (for better or worse) this one is mine. ALTERNATELY, especially in the city, it can be a derisive description when used about a stranger; an old man is no one of import, or someone to be regarded with scorn. The first and most important trait you notice about him is that he is past his prime. "Sorry I'm late, some old man ahead of me in line was shouting at the barista." This makes it an extremely interesting phrase because if you use it on someone you know but have an undefined relationship with it is either a term of familial endearment or a dismissive insult.

(When it comes to writing Batfam, this has almost as much utility as the belts XD)

edit: whoops just realized somebody already answered this really well, my bad, I gotta learn to read those replies

Okay, can anyone explain the nuances of 'Old Man' to me?

Like, it's a way of teasing someone about ageing and the passage of time. It's both a slang for 'dad' AND 'boyfriend/husband.' It MIGHT be a way of referring to other authority figures??

I just ... I'm trying to sort out references used by the various Bats.

Dick and Damian use it for Bruce.

Bruce uses it for Alfred.

Are they alluding to the parental role these guys have? (Damian definitely is.) Just teasing them about ageing?

I'm pretty sure a 'my' in the front firmly drops it into dad territory. But how about a definite article? No article at all?

I didn't grow up with this phrase, and it is challenging me!

I do love the trope of 'the character with the most fear also has the most experience dealing with it.'

The Empty House - part 2

The Empty House - Part 2

"I struck against an elderly deformed man, who had been behind me, and I knocked down several books which he was carrying. ... I endeavoured to apologize for the accident, but it was evident that these books which I had so unfortunately maltreated were very precious objects in the eyes of their owner. With a snarl of contempt he turned upon his heel."

NOOOOO! DAMN IT, BILLY-BARD! I love Shakespeare so much, but this one play just will not stop haunting me. I'll never reach the ends of it. It's like a puddle that goes down far enough to have angler fish.

I have been exposed to this more than any other of The Bard's work, and never once by choice. I have been forced to read this play cover to cover four times in school, including for one exhausperated highschool teacher who got the lot of us engaged by giving extra credit to whoever found the most dick jokes. I've seen it performed by every kind of troop from school kids to the actual globe theater. I once got roped into playing a bit part in a performance art street production because I happen to be walking by, and I NEVER CAUGHT THIS?!?

I tip my hat to you, thank you for showing me yet another facet to the peerless jewel I am repeatedly clubbed over the head with whether I like it or not.

It's A Perfect Sonnet.

It's a perfect sonnet.

14 lines. 3 stanzas in ABAB rhyme, and a rhyming couplet at the end.

It starts off with each of them speaking a whole stanza. Romeo offering up a self depreciating metaphor (a pilgrim at a holy shrine, sinful for wanting to place a kiss on her hand), and Juliet returning it (it's not a sin for a pilgrim to touch the hands of a saint. Pilgrims and the saints hands can touch. )

Then they share a quatraine, keeping the rhyme and rhythm steady, the flirting turning even more overt. (Saints and pilgrims both have lips, yeah? Well, sure, for prayer. Well if a pilgrims hand can touch a saints hand, then their lips...)

Then they each speak half a couplet (the saints dont make the first move, but if its a prayer....well, here I am, praying....), and share their first kiss.

It's flirty and silly and a little irreverent, and they become more and more in sync as they speak.

This is a heightened, fantastical, almost reality bending moment. This is a moment where two lonely teenagers, one who is having her future decided without her and the other fresh from an unrequited rejection, feel the world shift around them.

And the foreshadowing sits at the end of stanza 3. This is an act of faith, but if it cannot be, it will turn to despair.

And I just. The craft of it. The poetry of it. How the form and the rhythm mirror the metaphor and mirror the emotion of it.

Spider-Man's Canon Cryptidization

As much as I love how Batman went from respected lawman to urban legend, I feel people fail to appreciate the Marvel equivalent. Peter Parker's alterego went from 'literally a wrestler with a gimmick' to 'he might maybe have once been human? We hope?!' in the eyes of the average civillian/mook.

Like his origin is clearly human, he's a tv performer and it's understood that his webbing is a gadget he came up with for the schtick. Then a little later when the Xmen become more popular and have more of an effect on the Marvelverse, you get the whole 'mutant scum' angle. But it eventually becomes clear that no, whatever this guy is, 'typical mutant' ain't it. (The alien suit debacle does not help with this at all.)

By the mid 80s Spider-Man is basically a cryptid, helped along by how the choreography and art style changed enough to show him moving in a way that is very inhuman, striking from the shadows, gravity optional. There's a whole arc where he adventures overseas and just straight up passes for a supernatural being so as not to compromise his secret id.

Then whenever anybody interacts with him long enough for him to start quipping they realize he's just a huge dork. Like, you know the inhumanly strong man-shaped shadow that can tell you pointed a gun at him from two blocks away without looking? He's going to give you a punny nickname while tying you up with a semi organic compound hitherto unknown to science. It's so funny.

Edit: just caught the typo in the title T-T

The sheer incongruity of the last line never fails to make me snort.

There's a reason retellings of the Green Goblin's origin tend to skate over his exact reasoning for his aesthetic choices. The Lizard he ain't.

Pisses me off how good Shakespeare actually is. Like yeah he's actually that good. People hype him up like he's the best English writer ever, and yeah he's actually an S+ tier writer.
