[I am reblogging this to address formatting issues in original post]
I’ve quantified 13 different queer tropes (yes, 13, that actually organically happened) that can be found in Taylor Swift’s discography. Because I’m an academic, and that’s what we do.
None of these tropes are definitive. They don’t definitively say the text is queer, or that Taylor Swift is queer, but they do suggest queer readings. In other words, they reflect queer experience and queer expression, regardless of intent, or the author’s actual identity or desires. And while many of the tropes overlap with other kinds of readings– for example, female agency is also a feminist trope– when we see them all together like this, well, it’s quite suggestive (and marvelous).
Created by: So Many Signs-So Many Times
1) FORBIDDEN LOVE – Love that is secret because it would be judged or cause harm to those who love were this love to be revealed; Love that is dangerous.
•This love is different difficult but it’s real (Love Story) [“different” was the original lyric]
•Seems like there’s always someone who disapproves, They’ll judge it like they know about me and you (Ours)
•I would fall from grace just to touch your face (Don’t Blame Me)
•I loved you in spite of deep fears that the world would divide us (Dancing with our Hands Tied)
•I don’t want to keep secrets just to keep you (Cruel Summer)
•This love is treacherous… nothing safe is worth the drive. (Treacherous)
2) PRONOUNS (OR LACK THEREOF) – Many uses of “you” and terms of endearment; Fewer uses of “he,” “him,” and “his” than one would expect. [I did not run the data but my hunch is that if you compared TS lyrics with other songs written by (straight) women, you’d notice that he/him/his are used far less in Taylor Swift’s work.
3) ASSUMING THE MALE PERSPECTIVE AND/OR MALE GAZE– Shifts the POV so she is singing from the an explicitly male perspective; Assumes the role of the looker and positions love interest as object of desire (historically the female position in a hetero diad– male looks, woman has “to-be-looked-at-ness” (related to Feminization of Object of Desire); TS narrator is the “doer,” object of desire is the receiver.
•Marry me, Juliet (Love Story)
•I don’t wanna hurt you, I just wanna be / Drinking on a beach with you all over me (End Game)
•Wrap your arms around me, baby boy (Paper Rings)
•Betty – entire song
•How You Get the Girl (entire song)
•I Hit You Like Bang (End Game)
4) FEMINIZATION OF OBJECT OF DESIRE– Related to Male Perspective and Male Gaze; Presumed male love interest is feminized by describing him in ways that are more feminine, or usually feminine; Describing presumed male love interest by what he’s wearing (overlap with Male Gaze), using diminutive terms of endearment.
•Baby doll, when it comes to a lover (ME!)
•Wrap your arms around me baby boy (Paper Rings)
•And the fella over there with the hella good hair… (Shake it Off)
•Cause I can’t help it if you look like an angel (Hey Stephen)
•Stay beautiful, every little piece love (Stay Beautiful)
•You got that James Dean, daydream, look in your eyes [This one is interesting because it also evokes homo-erotic imagery]
•Lipstick on your face (So It Goes)
•Come here, dressed in black now (So It Goes)
5) DOUBLE ENTENDRES– Words or phrases that have double meanings or clear references (related to Phrasing);
•Then you won’t have to cry, or hide in the closet (Seven)
•We need love but all we want is danger / We change sides like a record changer (New Romantics)
•We’re a crooked love in a straight line down (I Wish You Would)
•Too in love to think straight (Wonderland)
6) WLW Sex or desire– Clear or highly suggestive descriptions of WLW sex or desire
•Wear you like a necklace (So It Goes)
•I’ll do anything you say, if you say it with your hands (Treacherous)
•All the boys and their expensive cars, with their Range Rovers and their Jaguars, never took me quite where you do (King of My Heart)
•Religion’s in your lips… The altar is my hips (False God)
•You did a number on me…I did a number on you, But, honestly, baby, who’s counting… 1, 2, 3 (So It Goes)
•You showed me colors you know I can’t see with anyone else (Illicit Affairs)
7) EXPLICITLY GAY
•Why are you mad when you could be Glaad? (You Need to Calm Down)
•You can want who you want, boys and boys and girls and girls. (Welcome to NY)
8) TENDERNESS – Focus more on emotional connection, tenderness, sensuality, friendship– Feels more sapphic than straight.
•Hand under my sweatshirt / Baby, kiss it better (Cardigan)
•Strange look on his face / Pauses, then says, “You’re my best friend” / And you know what it was, he is in love (You Are in Love)
•Whispers of “Are you sure? Never have I ever before” (August)
•Something gave you the nerve to touch my hand. (It’s Nice to Have a Friend)
9) PERFORMATIVE OR CONSTRUCTED NATURE OF REALITY –Stories within Stories – References to everything being a text (movie, song, etc.) / describing reality as a text– Conjures queerness in how it foregrounds the constructed or performative nature of reality, pointing to a disruption in things like compulsory heterosexuality, the gender binary, etc.
•Music starts playing like the end of a sad movie / It’s the kind of ending you don’t really wanna see (Breathe)
•I think I’ve seen this film before, and I didn’t like the ending (Exile)
•The story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now (The Story of Us)
•Don’t read the last page, but I stay (New Year’s Day)
10) ODD OR INTERESTING PHRASINGS / REFERENCES– Kind of a catch-all; Things that just seem off, or alert my gaydar; Sometimes it’s hard to explain, like how I responded to Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” or Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” before I knew they were queer.
•Building forts with my lover, trust him like a brother (Call it What You Want) [This just feels off – I don’t think straight women ever compare their lovers to their brothers. Ew, David.]
•Staring out the window like I’m not your favorite town / I’m New York City, I still do it for you babe (False God) [Strong Karlie references here]
Also, queer references such as “road less traveled” (Robert Frost).
And things that just wouldn’t be that clever if it weren’t about Karlie (or a woman)
•You’re so gorgeous, can’t say anything to your face, coz look at your face.” [Really only clever if it’s about Karlie, someone who, as a model, literally makes a living being gorgeous; Totally pedestrian if it’s about a guy]
11) FEMALE AGENCY– Girl power, Strong sense of self and ownership of one’s sexulity.
•Bad, bad boys. Shiny toy with a price. You know that I bought it (Cruel Summer)
•He said the way my blue eyes shined / Put those Georgia stars to shame that night / I said “that’s a lie” (Tim McGraw)
•You should have said no, baby, and you might still have me (Should Have Said No)
•We Are Never Getting Back Together – entire song
•Does a scorpion sting when fighting back? They strike to kill, and you know I will (Mad Woman)
12) OUTSIDER – Focus on being an outsider, not fitting in. Of course everyone feels like they are on the outside looking in at times, but I’ve often wondered why someone who is traditionally beautiful, feminine, able bodied, smart, white, affluent, etc. would write so much about not fitting in, especially in her early work
•How can I ever try to get better, Nobody ever lets me in (The Outside)
• She wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts / She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers (You Belong with Me)
•We show off our scarlet letters, trust me mine is better (New Romantics)
13) FEELING UNSEEN– Related to Outsider trope; Lyrics that position TS/narrator as not truly seen for who she is.
•Been here all along, so why can’t you see me? (You Belong with Me)
•You just see right through me, but if you only knew me (Invisible)
•They see right through me… Can you see right through me… I see right through me (The Archer)

im sorry what???!!! 👀
did we know it was the exact same one??!!!
👀🤯
So it's JUST A COINCIDENCE that on December 4th, 2014 Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss were seen making out at a "The 1975" concert during the song "Girls" where the lyrics include: "Bite your face to spite your nose." Where Taylor is seen, before the kissing, POINTING TO HER NOSE. And then she makes an album called, "Lover" where her 5th song called, "Archer" has the lyrics: "cut off my nose to spite my face." 👀👀👀👀👀 THAT'S JUST A COINCIDENCE?!?!?!
lest we forget, the kissgate concert was held at a venue called Terminal 5

Taylor taking off her dress for Gigi Hadid
Just something to file away for the Kaylor Timeline
So TSwift says in the LPSS “we went to the lakes district a couple years ago which inspired the song the lakes
Is it too far of a leap to say that “a couple of years ago” is a loose term? If so, taylor had this to say in invisible string:
“Bold was the waitress on our three year trip/Getting lunch down by the lakes”
Karlie’s 2017 trip to London enjoying the countryside was three years after Taylor and Karlie’s Big Sur trip in 2014.
Does someone know form where is this and how is she kissing ?
👀
I want EVERY SINGLE Kaylor shipper/supporter to reblog so I can have an idea of how many we are.
Howdy partner! this song is clearly a reference to Taylors roots in country music - but it goes deeper than that. It’s about Karlie, and how both girls have built their careers off of selling the idea of love, karlie through modeling and Taylor through songwriting. Both are super ambitious and focused, playing the game and driving their careers forward, but have rags (ok - not rags, but upper middle class normalcy) to riches stories, which makes them feel like the don’t quite belong in the celeb world.
And the tennis court was covered up
Several people have noticed that this could be a reference to Tennis Court by Lorde. The last time Kaylor was seen together was the below pic at Lorde’s bday. Reading the lyrics to Tennis Court, it almost seems like the same setting as CBM. Lorde’s song explores the dark side of fame, talking about not fitting in and being surrounded by superficial fame. She says “let’s go down to the tennis courts to talk it out” and then we have CBLM that starts in the middle of a sentence with “and”, and takes place at the tennis court, where the cowboys are trying to impress the rich folks, almost as if the songs are sequential.
With some tent-like thing
Here we’re already getting the theme of not belonging somewhere. Taylor doesn’t say canopy - which is what she is referring to and actually would fit both in terms of syllables and rhyme scheme - she says “tent-like thing” which is both dismissive of her surroundings and tells us that maybe she doesn’t quite know the right word for them.
And you asked me to dance
Let’s just take a moment to remember that 1) Karlie is a dancer and 2) kaylor started at vsfs2013 where they danced on stage together like this:
dancer karlie!
But I said, “Dancing is a dangerous game”
This references DWOHT - which is the ultimate Kaylor song and is all about dancing even though its dangerous, like in the lyrics “can we dance through an avalanche?”, “Swaying as the room burned down”, etc.
Oh, I thought This is gonna be one of those things
There’s a song called Just One Of Those Things by Nat Porter that you can listen to here, and it seems like Tay is referencing it here. The song lists great loves (ex. Romeo & Juliet) being cast aside and belittled as “one of those things”. This reminds me of people saying that being gay is a “phase” in order to devalue it. Specifically one line in Just One Of Those Things really makes me think about Kaylor - “If we’d thought a bit, of the end of it When we started painting the town We’d have been aware that our love affair Was too hot, not to cool down”. It expresses how they were so loud while glass closeting and had so much chemistry that they couldn’t just tone it down they had to go completely dark in order to keep closeting.
Now I know I’m never gonna love again
In many ways this references the theme of “right where you left me”, Taylor can’t move on because she fell too hard for Karlie and no love will ever compare.
I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve Takes one to know one You’re a cowboy like me
Taylor sees a lot of herself in Karlie. They know how to play the same games in terms of their careers and bearding, but because of this they understand each others vulnerabilities, etc.
Never wanted love Just a fancy car
They weren’t looking for love when they met, they were both just in the place they were because they were trying to advance their careers. However, as Tay has talked about before, the lure or riches and fancy cars isn’t enough to satisfy her. It also references this line in King Of My Heart, where Tay literally says that all the boys aren’t as good as her lover (Karlie) is.
Now I’m waiting by the phone Like I’m sitting in an airport bar You had some tricks up your sleeve Takes one to know one
You’re a cowboy like me
also:
Perched in the dark Telling all the rich folks anything they wanna hear Like it could be love I could be the way forward Only if they pay for it
Both Karlie and Taylor have built their careers off of selling the idea of love - Taylor through her music and Karlie through her modeling, especially with Victoria’s Secret. Both of them are capitalizing and cashing in on romance. They play the game of love to be valuable to the record labels, fashion brands, and industry overall, getting the “rich people” in the industry to invest in them and their careers. However, both are caught off guard when they encounter the real thing and actually fall in love.
You’re a bandit like me Eyes full of stars
Taylor talks about eyes a lot, but I think this has two meanings. 1 - both of their eyes are full of stars because they are surrounded by other celebs and so they are literally seeing stars all the time. 2 - the more conventional meaning would be that their eyes are bright and beautiful.
It also references two songs that are very much about Karlie: “Starry eyes sparkin’ up my darkest night” in Call It What You Want, and “The stars in your eyes shined brighter in Tupelo” in Dorothea.
Hustling for the good life
Again, Taylor brings attention to the fact that they are both really career focused and trying really hard to be as successful as possible. They don’t have the same type of fallbacks that celebs with famous parents and old money have.
Never thought I’d meet you here It could be love We could be the way forward And I know I’ll pay for it
Here Taylor knows that she’ll pay for her relationship with karlie in two ways, 1- she’s paying for it in that by falling in love and pursuing a relationship she’s on the “treacherous” road making her life much more complicated given that she’s choosing not to come out, 2- she is literally paying for beards so she can have a public muse for her relationship songs.
[Chorus]
And the skeletons in both our closets
Plotted hard to fuck this up
Here Tay is talking about closets again. This actually makes me think of two meanings.
1- it makes me think of the “skin and bones” line in treacherous (maybe because I was just talking about that song) and how tay has used that type of language to talk about her and her lover in the past. The skeletons in the closet could be a reference to the past karlie and Taylor being in the closet, when they were both really thin and Taylor was battling her eating disorder. In the past they were plotting so hard to cover their tracks and stay in the closet, which eventually messed everything up for them.
2 - The more obvious interpretation is that the skeletons in the closet are the people who were controlling their careers, who they have now moved away from, like SB2. These people messed things up by keeping them in the closet.
And the old men that I’ve swindled
Both karlie and tay have had careers that were mostly controlled by men who are older than them - VS CMO Ed razek, SB2, etc. These men thought that they were controlling kaylors careers, but kaylor is individually profiting as well.
Really did believe I was the one
This references The One, the first track on folklore.
And the ladies lunching have their stories about When you passed through town
Karlie has quite the rep for making people fall in love with her quite easily (see the klossanova video that @theprologues made here).
But that was all before I locked it down
Love locked down! for more details check out this post and this one, but basically Karlie posted and image with the caption “love locked down” on March 6, 2016, on the same day Taylor posted “one year down” with the picture of a locket. This was one year after their Vogue cover came out in March 2015. Because of this, it seems like they were celebrating their anniversary some sort. Hence the line “I locked it down”.
Now you hang from my lips Like the Gardens of Babylon
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world, known as very beautiful and an incredible feat in engineering (beauty + engineering are both things that describe karlie!). However, archeologists are unable to find proof of their location - therefore it’s unclear if the gardens “were an actual construction or a poetic creation”.
With your boots beneath my bed
This is a metaphor for sleeping together and is also referencing cowboy boots.
Forever is the sweetest con
It’s impossible to be with each other forever - when we say forever we know that we will actually be separated by mortality and factors we can’t control. However, Taylor is okay being “conned” with ideas of forever, because it’s understood that they will be with each other as long as possible.
And yet, this also references Hoax - it’s a different way of saying “your faithless love’s the only hoax I believe in”. Leaving us wondering if the love was real or a con.
[Chorus]
okay but actually, she’s being very loud with this “forever is the sweetest con” chapter. loud about bearding and façades and being duplicitous. these songs allude to mirages of many kinds. (see also this great tag by @all-my-possessions). Let’s look at how:
cowboy like me (also re: this analysis)
I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve
Telling all the rich folks anything they wanna hear
Hustling for the good life
And the skeletons in both our closets plotted hard to fuck this up
Forever is the sweetest con
mirrorball:
I’ll show you every version of yourself tonight
Spinning in my highest heels, love, shining just for you
I can change everything about me to fit in
The masquerade revelers
I’ve never been a natural, all I do is try, try, try
evermore:
motion capture put me in a bad light
sending signals to be double-crossed
long story short:
Fatefully I tried to pick my battles ‘til the battle picked me
Misery like the war of words I shouted in my sleep
The knife cuts both ways
And I fell from the pedestal
Long story short, it was the wrong guy, now I’m all about you
And he’s passing by, rare as the glimmer of a comet in the sky
invisible string:
Gave me no compasses, gave me no signs.
Were there clues I didn’t see?
Cold was the steel of my axe to grind for the boys who broke my heart. Now I send their babies presents
willow:
Every bait and switch was a work of art
The inspiration behind ‘Don’t blame me’, aka she is obsessed.
Yes, Taylor clearly sampled. This is not the point though. The point is what inspired her. Not only the lyrics but her muse as an angel that falls from grace. The fact that the commercial came out right after they met makes it all the more interesting. Now I want a mashup of both songs.
Love Lock Bridge in Paris,
the City of Lover
the next chapter
me🌈me
in Miss Americana, taylor describes her vision of the ME! music video, and mentions that there will be a parade outside.
the visuals, she lists off to brendon, her collaborator, are all the things that make her her
including:
and if youve watch the music video intently, you will be sure to have noted that these two men kissing one another, used as a representation of “gay pride” do in fact close in for a kiss:
in this way, this clip from Miss Americana connects the “parade” scene to “gay pride”
and at the parade taylor chants that, while there is no i in team, as echoed on the pavement,
there is a me.
a me on the team. hm.
what team?
what parade?
making that sign...
what sign..?
champagne problems
The definition of “champagne problems” is that this expression is used to refer to a problem that’s insignificant… worthless, compared to so many other worse situations (such as world hunger, wars, a pandemic).
My view of this song is that Taylor used problems she experienced involving marriages that, at first, seemed to have ended her world. But even though they were troubled moments, she realized after a while that they were not so bad compared to so many other problems in life.
The song portrays 3 times that Taylor was personally involved in thing relative to weddings. 1) The wedding blow that KK had to participate in (white letters); 2) Once Tay refused a marriage proposal (red letters); 3) Confirmation that Taylor and Karlie are married (yellow letters).
That’s what happened after Karlie told Taylor personally about the marriage maneuver. What is obvious, at first, must have triggered a HUGE fight between them.
This is Taylor’s reaction after the news. She seems to have been shocked and then they fought. Tay returned her engagement/wedding ring to Kar. And apparently, after KK left for some other home their, when Tay was calmer, she seems to have realized that she wasn’t the only one who was suffering from what was going to happen, and Taylor kind of regretted having “dropped” Karlie’s hand at a time that must have been one of the most distressing in her life (can you imagine how terrifying it must have been for her? Probably KK must have been “cornered” to participate in this scam and thought that because of this, she would lose her fiancee/wife). Taylor then realized that, in the grand scheme of things in the world, this was nothing more of a “champagne problems” compared to so many other things that they, or even people close to them, have already gone through in life.
Karlie told the family everything that happened, the future wedding coup that she would have to do, the fight with Taylor and nobody was happy with what would happen. I think Kaptain Kimby got drunk with sadness that the girls were in that situation.
Taylor is recalling an ex-girlfriend’s proposal that she once refused. And talking about the reaction of people close to this ex who commented that Tay’s refusal was nothing big. Just a silly “champagne problem”.
I don’t know if you capture that same vibe that I do, but the first times I heard this excerpt, it seems that the person who is proposing marriage is someone who is always surrounded by friends, someone who is the center of attention of the group, a person popular. It also seems that this ex-girlfriend took it for granted that Taylor would accept her engagement proposal. And after being refused, the girl wanted to know why Taylor had said “no”, but Tay did not know the reason for her negative response to this proposal. Taylor just knew it was “no”.
This passage is the most interesting and revealing to me.
“Midas touch” is an expression used to refer to someone who can make something prosper.
Chevy is short for Chevrolet, the famous car brand. Do you know what awards Chevrolet sponsored in 2017 and even had a commercial with Luke Bryan? Link
The 51st CMA Awards. The one in which KK participated and presented the music award of the year, which went to TS’s “Better Man”. That is, Taylor thinks she only won that prize, because KK was presenting and brought her good luck. And I believe that Tay put this moment here, to try to show us, when more or less this fight because the wedding blow happened. Sometime in 2017. OMG! That woman’s mind… 🤯;
Taylor reveals how her insecurities were on edge when she made a joke that she was crazy. Because after so many people said that to her, and other bad things, Tay believed them for a while (pre reputation period);
She also talks about how loyal and true their friends are, and that, from that moment on, they could no longer say “our friends” (feud’s public narrative was in progress) and soon these friends will be decorating the corridors (the friends will participate in the fake wedding to try to give credibility to the coup) that they’ve already crossed;
THEY’RE MARRIED!; 🥰♥️🥰
Taylor mentions the two stunts, and how she was never ready for that to happen, despite knowing that this blow was coming;
Once again, Tay remembers the refused marriage proposal, now justifying to the ex that sometimes, all you know is that you need to say “no”. Until you meet the right person who will make the proposal;
Taylor remembers again that she was called crazy for having refused the proposal and consoles her ex-girlfriend, saying that the ex will find the real thing, from experience.
Taylor reassures that there’s still hope for her ex to find the one, her true love. That special person that will be there to collect/mend your “pieces” when you’re broken. Just as Taylor found Karlie. And when that person arrives, Tay’s refusal will just be “champagne problems” in ex’s life.
In other words, the main theme of the song, talks about how, at certain times in our life, there’re situations that seem to be the worst thing that has ever happened to us, or that is going to happen to us, but then you realize that it was a “champagne problems” compared to so many other worst realities in the world, such as the pandemic we’re experiencing, for example. And Kaylor is still together.
👸🏼♥️☀️
P.S.: I only came to the conclusion that this disagreement occurred in 2017, after I tried to think of a time when Taylor was using a “flannel cure” + a moment of prosperity that occurred in November + and that Kar was present (since Midas is associated to gold, and the gold color is attributed to Karlie). It was then that I remembered the video of Tay watching Kar giving a CMA award for “Better Man”.
And despite this disagreement, because of the marriage scam, it seems to be, and maybe it’s classified by the girls as, the worst fight of their relationship, I think that they never ended it. I think they probably fought for a few days. But they didn’t go to the extreme of finishing their relationship.
As soon as I started peeking at the fandom in 2014, at times, some Kaylor blogs would comment more frequently on questions regarding Taylor’s possible ex girlfriends, or direct people to blogs that specifically talked about the subject or a certain “ship”. I confess that I was never interested in knowing about the subject and, therefore, I never entered these blogs to learn more.
So, about the identity of the ex-girlfriend who had her marriage proposal rejected by Taylor, I believe it’s Dianna Agron.
Because someone commented to me about it once (in person), and I remember reading it a few times, on a kaylor blog, that the Swiftgrons (is that how you write it?) believed that after many comings and goings in their troubled relationship (apparently toxic), and full of betrayals by Dianna (I’m not sure about that), at a time when they were separated, Dianna in a final attempt of Taylor getting back with her, proposed to Tay. Which of course, now seems to have been confirmed that such an event actually happened through the letters of “champagne problems”, and Taylor refused DA’s proposal. As I said before, I’m not sure if this is true or not, because I never tried to confirm what I heard and read a few times. But perhaps someone who knows more aboutthis whether this can confirm if my assumption is real or not, in the comments.

Taylor started her countdown to this chapter release from the day that she announced the two bonus tracks being released digitally 1/8/21. Meaning this chapter came out 13 days after the bonus tracks.
For folklore she released the lakes digitally and then released 3 of the chapters 3 days after the previous. Meaning: the lakes digital release <3days> the escapism chapter <3days> the sleepless nights chapter <3days> the salt box house chapter. She then released the final chapter the yeah i showed up at your party chapter 26 days after the third chapter. Then 26 days after that she did the signed copies of folklore in local record stores rollout. 2+6=8
I dk if she’s going to follow the same theme this time around and release a new chapter every three days but we’ll see. I will note that the Grammys are 53 days away from today on 3/14. If taylor wanted to keep up the buzz and stay within her numerological 13 vibes she has room to release something 4 more times. Meaning 13 days from today then 13 days after that so on and so forth.
🤯
