A FUNNY THING TO COMMIT oneโ€™s life to adventure amongst the stars, and yet still be overwhelmed in awe of the infinite splendor of the universe. For a long while she fell into an absorbed gaze with the slow dying star that Starbase 12 had orbited. Then all at once she had been vividly aware of the faintest of warmth from an even fainter touch of fingers to hers. Scotty. A surge of something that teetered on thrill rushed up from her belly, heated by her heart where it left a flush of deep tawny in her cheeks. There was still the giddy sort of excitement that comes with the blush of new love; the kind of newness where the moments come and do so with a flagrant disregard to the laws of timeโ€™s passing. Nyota liked when the moments moved very slowly between them, as they did now; where she felt just breathing each otherโ€™s air would sew them to a fixed point in time - like the universe reaching through itโ€™s own vast abyss to present to them something infinitely precious. A moment that they may claim, a rooted plot on the cosmic timeline - to exist always until its radiance burned through until the last stars. Then she says a silly thing. He smiles when she does. He already had a coin. For a moment she thinks heโ€™s magic. Then he says a soft thing. Nyotaโ€™s hand entangles with his that holds the coin, itโ€™s metal cool against her palm. Their touch was new, tapered, and discreet. Existing in that space where a kiss shared between them numbers a vanishingly thin amount, but each one committed to her memory as though theyโ€™d been with her always. She feels the impulse to commit another entry to those memories and rises slowly from her feet so that her mouth might meet his where finally she kisses him. Nyota kisses Scotty and thereโ€™s a beat of swirling silence; like the silence that lives between the death of the star and the birth of the supernova. And here is where theyโ€™ll crack open the fabric of the cosmos.ย  Hands moving up and away from his so they could creep featherlight along the avenue of his arms, splaying out flat against his chest, and smoothing the material of his shirt below her fingers. Higher her feet lifted her, deeper her kiss went, and followed by the ascent of her hands to his shoulders; resting finally against either side of his jaw.

A FUNNY THING TO COMMIT Oneโ€™s Life To Adventure Amongst The Stars, And Yet Still Be Overwhelmed In

The moments between them began disregarding time again, as she was sure she had only just kissed him, yet the swollen ache in her lips suggested otherwise. Just as slowly as sheโ€™d risen to meet his mouth did she descend away from it, but held his eyes with hers so she could say, with great conviction in her heart, she answered his question with a much weightier meaning then either might have expected โ€” โ€œBoth. Not me. Not you. Us. Both.โ€ She touches her fingers lightly to her mouth feeling that dull ache there, the place where he had been and she could still feel him there; it had struck her why some had described kissing like a kind of fusion. โ€œBoth,โ€ she said softer, but committed wholly to what it meant. To Scotty.

"Let's flip coins. Heads, I'm yours. Tails, you're mine."

"Let's Flip Coins. Heads, I'm Yours. Tails, You're Mine."

FACE BREASK INTO A WIDE GRIN. No matter how they flip the coin, it works out in Monty's favor. And Nyota's.

The skin around his eyes crinkle, hues dancing in the pulsing lights of the starbase. Someone thought it was a good idea to have neon light to draw attention to store fronts and galleries.

The station hums under their feet, maintaining its orbit around a dying star. A sight in and of itself but Scotty is trapped by the mischief lining Nyota's mouth.

"Sounds good to me lass. Now, who is doing the flipping?" A hand slips into his pocket as he produces a coin. "You or me?" @haiiling

D I S C O V E R. THIS WAS A WORD WHICH INCITED From Her Fathomless Ambition; Nyota Uhura Had Always Wanted

D I S C O V E R. THIS WAS A WORD WHICH INCITED from her fathomless ambition; Nyota Uhura had always wanted to be an explorer for the sake of brilliant and beautiful โ€“ discovery. And yet there are things that perhaps neednโ€™t be discovered or explored; but should serve as caution to the rest. The consequence of going too far; to toe along the edges of where lingers the apotheosis of fear. The eldritch things that live in the dark parts between the stars โ€“ were such nightmares meant to be found? How far can malevolence be explored? And to what end? Nyota drew herself closer, chasing the warmth from him, again finding comfort in that familiar darkness, face pressed into the crook of his neck; clinging far tighter than what would be her conventional grip into his skin. In hushed, slow inhales and exhales she sidestepped Spockโ€™s sentiment about discovery as the idea felt strange and tight in her chest, a concept that did not belong. Instead she followed the invisible equations he drew into her body, a great many she could not guess their beginnings, middles or ends, but she did catch patterns, numbers and the occasional order of operation; it was the secret she kept with his hands, had yet to ever say aloud her hypothesis to what he left etched into her skin. Briefly smiling into his neck, Nyota drew her leg high, sliding slowly through the middle of his โ€“ smooth skin against soft, black hair.

It was a feeling she wanted to chase.

But fear is insidious.

It bleeds.

Her hand, that was soft snaking a delicate line up his neck to the tip of his ear and back down again, finally stopped to rest against his chest, smoothing the hair idly with her fingers.

Fear bleeds โ€“ bleeding into the familiar darkness she found in the comfort of Spock. The dark of a vacant rip in the cosmos, a singularity of darkness - unquantifiable fear.

โ€œSpockโ€“โ€ his name trembled in her mouth, โ€œ . . . do you think fear is tangible? If itโ€™s observable and quantifiable - couldnโ€™t it be tangible? A sentient thing?โ€

D I S C O V E R. THIS WAS A WORD WHICH INCITED From Her Fathomless Ambition; Nyota Uhura Had Always Wanted

The question itself sounded like nonsense, she knew it to be true, but there was a context that she couldnโ€™t explain. It was how she knew fear was tangible; it was a cold hand that held sense at the back of her esophagus and reached down and polluted the air in her lungs with which to speak it.

Maybe Spock might draw an equation of numbers with which to unlock the words trapped in her throat.

AN ANSWER FAILED HER or at least one that seemed like it would produce any sensical clarity to either of them. The question held an answer so large Nyota wasnโ€™t sure how to respond for several long minutes. In that time, the dark from the room mirrored the darkness that lingered at the edges of her thoughts, a puzzle to carry with her from birth, to this moment, to seemingly the rest of her days.

Uhura did this from on occasion; in these private, silent, intimate spaces she held with him where her mind wandered to the end of the galaxy, gently pulling his hand along behind her, only to stop right at the edge where infinite darkness began.

Back inside of Spockโ€™s quarters, in a far more familiar darkness; that darkness that held no pretense, just as the man of whom she laid her body against. The resolute and unrelenting heat from all of her radiated deep into his skin as Nyota made a brief ascent upward where her head came to rest under the point of his chin.

When the words finally came to her, they came packaged inside of a query; โ€œSpock โ€“ what do you think is out there . . . beyond the galactic wall?โ€

This had not the first instance in which Nyota came to her mate with this question; and very nearly each time the way in which it is asked, the hour of day and circumstance - all different. Going so far to appear as though a non-sequitur - as it did now. Though there was hardly anything random in this question, a question she thought on almost every day of her life from youth.

Not untoward for scientists and explorers, to pose such quandaries and wonder grand and mysterious things; it was that her tone never implied Uhura was asking for the purposes of science or exploration.

It was a secret thing she asked him โ€” with no expectation of a specific answer, leaving it to be little more than a rhetorical question, but far from direct or specific.

Alright, so this post is a long time coming but it is something that has been on my mind lately and involves how I personally see the AOS timeline, particularly the way it involves canon of Discovery and Strange New Worlds and how those events unfold in the Alternate Original Series Timeline (Kelvin Timeline).

Simply put, it doesnโ€™t. They donโ€™t. Those events donโ€™t happen.

Not as they are in the show/series canon.

Agree or disagree, thatโ€™s your prerogative, but these are my thoughts.

Now this isnโ€™t an attack on anybody who enjoys either of these series. Iโ€™m watching SNW too. I enjoy it for the most part. This has to do with the fact that these shows are written for the Prime Timeline. The timeline in which Ambassador Spock hails from, in which TNG happened, TOS, you get the point.

None of these events are written taking into account AOS and the simple nature of the fact that the events, if theyโ€™re to follow a coherent, linear timeline, cannot have unfolded the way they did.

If you put the two timelines up next to each other, youโ€™ll see almost immediately that you cannot cross them without some heavy manipulation of the newer showsโ€”AOS has made one thing exceptionally clear and this fact cannot be changed, as it is a very important point in the story:

The Enterprise did not launch until 2258 and she was the first one in this timeline to be named Enterprise.

There are no stories of the Enterprise before 2258, as she was under construction in the Riverside Shipyard in Iowa. You remember that really neat shot of Kirk on the bike in 2255 before he gets on the shuttle for Academy looking at the almost completed Enterprise? The shot signifying hope and rebirth and a bright future? Yeah, that one. You know the one.

Her maiden voyage was the very day of Vulcanโ€™s destruction.

Pikeโ€™s first day as captain of the USS Enterprise was not until that day, when the distress call was received from Vulcan.

โ€œLadies and gentlemen, the maiden voyage of our newest flagship deserves more pomp and circumstance than we can afford today. Her christening will just have to be our reward for a safe return. Carry on.โ€

Even Scotty remarks on the Enterpriseโ€™s launch when Ambassador Spock and Kirk visit him during his โ€˜stayโ€™ on Delta Vega.

โ€œSo, the Enterprise has had its maiden voyage, has it?โ€

This simple fact alone makes it impossible for the events of either Discovery or Strange New Worlds to have unfolded in the Kelvin Timeline as they have.

Pike, as we know, is an exceptional captain in both Prime and Kelvinโ€”that fact cannot and will not be taken away from him. Theyโ€™re very different people, yes, as we can see from their presence, the way they command their starships, etc., but theyโ€™re both incredibly capable and experienced and hold the trust/loyalty of their crew. That being said, it means AOS Pike will also have a number of experiences under his belt to have earned him the position he has within Starfleet.

But in AOS, none of those experiences were on the Enterprise. Had the Narada not arrived back in 2233 when it did, the Enterprise might have been launched in 2245 as it was in the Prime Timeline, captained by Pike. However, Neroโ€™s incursion brought with it a wealth of information and technology that was used to enhance the entire Fleet, especially the flagship, thereby delaying her launch to 2258 and resulting in the incredibly large and technologically advanced Enterprise we (I) know and love in the Kelvin Timeline.

That doesnโ€™t even begin to touch upon the mess that comes from trying to figure out what happens to all of these characters if you attempt to blend the two, because, for example, Ortegas is going to simply give up her position to Sulu? Pike wouldnโ€™t want to have such an exceptional pilot as part of his crew?

One of the smartest, in my opinion, things AOS did was to outright state this is an alternate timeline and lean heavily into that fact to differentiate it from all the already previously existing Trek canon. But with that, and particularly the canon choices made for this timeline, means that the events taking place prior to the Kelvin incident and Neroโ€™s incursion in 2233 need to also be reimagined to address this anomalous event that never happened in that timeline.

That was a major event with intense, direct consequences that neither of the shows make any mention of and cannot be ignored. Everything beyond the incursion is also shaped by those events to varying degrees.

The events of Discovery donโ€™t begin until 2255, I believe, with s2 taking place in 2259. Pike and the Enterprise cannot be around for that. Neroโ€™s incursion throws a wrench into everything that would have been happening in the original Prime Timeline.

The Prime and Kelvin Timelines do not overlap well/seamlessly, not without manipulation of one to adapt to the other. Theyโ€™re difficult to blendโ€”theyโ€™re not meant to be blended, in my opinion, because you sacrifice important points and history from one or the other or both to fit all the events together, thereby diminishing the weight of particular events of that canon. Theyโ€™re separate timelines and they should stay separate timelines.

So, again, my particular blog canon especially, neither Discovery nor Strange New Worlds are canon to the Kelvin Timeline in any capacity, not as they are. Can some of Pikeโ€™s adventures be adapted to be some of the experiences under his belt? Absolutely, but it happened on a ship other than the Enterprise at another place, another time.

And that entire arc with the Gorn that SNW is doing? Absolutely not canon, not in my portrayal of events unfolding on the blog. Similar to how it was in TOS, the Enterprise is going to be the one to make real, proper first contact with the Gorn under different circumstances.

It happened in Prime. It didnโ€™t happen in the Kelvin timeline. Iโ€™m more than happy to interact with anyone from either of those shows, absolutely, but itโ€™s with the caveat that, unless thereโ€™s an AOS verse for those characters, it will be by way of crossover event, similar to the LD x SNW event.

Pro-ship/anti-ship Is A Stupid Argument And A Distractor From The Real Issue, Which Is Not What You Write

Pro-ship/anti-ship is a stupid argument and a distractor from the real issue, which is not what you write but how you write it. Writing is a form of art and a lot of art centers on drawing inspiration from real things, which yes - includes uncomfortable topics and issues. We base art and writing on our perspectives and experiences and the hard truth is that these things are not universal. Inevitably, you will come across things that are different, disturbing, and sometimes - gasp - bad. You have a choice to interact with that content or not, but policing how other people engage with it or utilize creative outlets to tell their stories, especially if they have experiences with those subjects, is neither your business nor right. On the other side of the spectrum, writing dark or uncomfortable topics is not inherently bad or morally wrong. I would argue that, when done in certain ways, doing so can start conversations about things that need to be talked about. It can bring awareness to issues. It can be used to connect to people who have experience with these sorts of subjects to bring them comfort by reminding them theyโ€™re not alone. It can even be used to normalize talking about these problems in away that prevents stigmatization and stereotyping of perpetrators or victims. Seeing things in media helps make us aware of them and helps conversations happen. The trick is that these subjects should be done in a way which does not glorify or sexualize the actions, and does not create or perpetuate stereotypes about the perpetrators/victims. The fact that this argument has been reduced to a black and white, all or nothing type issue when it is so complex is really disheartening. This idea that you have to be completely for or completely against something and take sides while completely disregarding the nuances ends up bleeding into other things and preventing us from having real conversations about problems. The RPC needs to understand that what you write is not nearly as important as how you write it. Anything can be bad if you donโ€™t take the time properly research it and address it with the care and respect it deserves.
