Ya'all.

The original fictional poster for "Goncharov". The title and credits have been edited over with: "Gonchpost Responsibly | Tag Your Unreality"

Gonchpost responsibly

Tag your unreality

I know I posted about Goncharov and Defunctland last night, but that was an earnest desire to see this trend examined under a microscope because it’s fascinating to see it escape containment.

However, while I know most folks are just having a bit of fun with it, the number of people complaining that others are “ruining” the joke by tagging it for unreality is too damn high.

I’ve answered far too many asks in private in the last 24 hours from folks with psychosis begging me to tell them if Goncharov is real or not because they trust me, someone they don’t know beyond my medical advocacy posts, not to lie to them.

So in case you need this: No, Goncharov is not real. It’s Tumblr having a bit of fun with a made up gangster story premise from the 1970s. Most of the gifsets you are seeing are from The Godfather and some other 70s and early 80s films. The musical scores are being composed by some very talented people here on Tumblr, as is most of the art and quotes.

I’m sorry if people are telling you it is real and are refusing to reassure you when you admit it’s causing you distress. Some people are just taking things too far for the bit and aren’t acting with kindness. I hope they will reconsider.

If you were unaware that the Goncharov is causing some people some considerable distress, that’s okay. Tumblr is huge and you can’t be expected to know everything, but please do tag all your posts and reblogs with unreality to assure people that it’s part of the site-wide joke.

If you’re one of the people complaining that tagging it with unreality “ruins” the joke, please reconsider and examine why your enjoyment of people’s distress is necessary to your enjoyment of an otherwise fun and crowd sourced bit that many people are having fun with without being cruel.

Anyway, go have fun you creative little gremlins. Just do it with more kindness.

Anyway if this post reaches 30000 notes I'll sit down and professionally film a Goncharov movie scene you can send to people who claim it's not real. This is completely serious, I've made movies before and I'm willing to do it for the memes.

quick and dirty guide to recognizing stolen content on tumblr

there is RAMPANT art and photography reposting on this stupid website, and it occurs to me that folks might not know how to recognize it. here are the mental gymnastics i go through every time i see a sus post

1. is there a caption? most creators tend to leave one. maybe it's so their url is prominent, or to express their thoughts about the piece, link their shops/websites, etc. most reposters leave the captions blank

2. look for credit in the picture. is there a name, handle, or watermark? does it match the url?

3. check the original post. often you'll find that the original poster actually linked the artist. go forth and reblog that version!! for some godforsaken reason people keep REMOVING CREDIT on this website and i will MANIFEST INSIDE YOUR HOUSE IF YOU DO SO

4. check the tags of the original post. beyond the main fandom/character/subject tags, creators tend to have a #my-art tag or something similar. photographers often use #photographers-on-tumblr/lensblr. sometimes they'll also have thoughts about their work there. this doesn't always work, but personally i never see reposters adding tags like this

5. look at op's other posts and bio. is there anything about being an artist or photographer in the description? does the art they post look the same? usually this is where you'll Know if it's a serial reposter, because their blog will be FULL of reposted shit with no captions that all have different styles. also half the time their blog description straight up admits it

6. check the notes to see if someone added the proper credit. at this point, if you know it's a repost but still wanna reblog it, at least give credit where it's due. see if someone else already did the work for you

7. reblog and add a link with creator credit. if you know it's a repost, and you can't find credit, consider doing your part to help creators get their well-deserved recognition. usually you can just google the watermark in the picture. otherwise reverse image search on google or tineye is your friend

8. if the original creator is on tumblr, reblog their version of the post. if you've gotten this far it's not hard to search their blog for it

9. consider letting the artist know their art has been stolen and send them the link. this way they can take action and file whatever claims they need to get it taken down

10. finally, support original content creators! look at the #artists-on-tumblr and #photographers-on-tumblr tags, follow your favourite creators and reblog their work. seriously it can make a huge difference

if you read this far, THANK YOU. making sure content creators get their credit is literally the bare minimum we can do to be respectful of the countless hours they spend on their work. especially when that content is freely accessible

We understand. You found paradise on Tumblr, you had a good blog, you made a good following. Cringe culture protected you and there were bandwagons of ironic memes. And you didn’t need a fandom like us. But, now you come to us and you say - “Once-ler Fandom, come back to keep out Twitter users.” But you don’t ask with respect. You don’t offer friendship. You don’t even think to call us A Fandom Where People Had Legit Fun And Weren’t Harming Anyone. Instead, you come into our tags on the ten year anniversary that Gentleman Onceler was to be married, and you ask us How Bad Can It Be.

This post confession from Cochlear Implant user, in contrast to happy first time CIs videos. Its true because I have talked to CI users Deaf youth yesterday while waiting to meet Pope Francis at the Embassy.  They did mentioned about having bad headaches and the sensory is very painful. So they ended up not wearing them anymore. Doctors/Audiologists “best recommendations” CIs is about busine$$ which it disgusts me. Another person wear hearing aids like me but I don’t wear them anymore cuz it doesn’t work for me to be able to hear so he said prefer hearing aids over CIs cuz it’s cheaper plus less risk over expensive cochlear implants and more likely high risks. In my opinion, hearing aids or CIs doesn’t cure for deafness.

Once again, Tumblr manages to succeed via just being honest with their users.

I made a post back around April fool's about the crabs being so popular because the joke was that every other website tries to trick you into clicking things so they can make money from your clicks and what if instead a website just asked "please click this revenue generating crab. It is there to generate revenue. In return you will have clicked on a crab. Nothing more." And the answer to that question was "people will frantically click on that crab. They don't hate the idea of the website getting money, they hate the idea of being profited on against their will".

So Tumblr implemented actual revenue crabs. "For this much money you can fill your or someone else's dash with virtual crabs. This will have the effect of there being crabs on their screen."

And people will buy those crabs. Because yes you're spending money on something stupid and useless but it's being sold to you as "hey you want something stupid and useless?", which is a nice change of pace from every other site trying to make itself out to be something more than what it is.

Twitter is floundering with the checkmark system because it's being sold as "confirm that you are someone important and who you say you are is true", which it isn't at all right now because anyone can buy one. You're buying a useless checkmark that only says that YOU think you're important. Or, more often than not right now, you are intending to trick other people into thinking you're someone you're not.

Meanwhile, Tumblr just said "Consider this double check mark. It does nothing. You will be marking yourself as someone who paid money for a meaningless checkmark and sometimes it will randomly turn into a bunch of crabs, making the site harder to use". And the userbase is like "Well sure, that sounds delightful."

The point is, despite what all the marketing and advertising people have tried to say, painting trash gold and trying to pass it off as something better is almost never as effective as just saying "hey you want this trash?"

Why yes, in fact, I do.

I Just Made A New Sideblog And Found Out This Setting Is Disabled By Default.

I just made a new sideblog and found out this setting is disabled by default.

This means that ALL new blogs will NOT have a [username].tumblr.com page. Not only that, but they will not have any themes besides the mobile-default.

As someone who really likes custom themes and Tumblr still having a fully customizable profile page, please turn this on!

You can make a website for your tumblr blog that is entirely your own!

Finding posts on your URL.tumblr.com page is much easier due to the ability to use your Archive and url.tumblr.com/tagged/[tag] pages!

Visiting your mutual's tumblr pages will become much more fun if they do the same! I used to always associate blogs with the themes they had, but that's sadly not possible anymore :(

If Tumblr themes die out, it will truly be an end of an era for the internet, and the future will hold only mobile-orientated, endless-scroll design devoid of personality.

Even if you don't like themes, this is a move that almost destroys Tumblr's origin as a blogging website and showcases the takeover of social-media-sameness.

I Just Made A New Sideblog And Found Out This Setting Is Disabled By Default.

Having your own URL and custom theme is fun! Try it today!!!

Edit: I focused on promoting custom themes but I do encourage people to simply turn on this setting for the URL. You can pick a free tumblr theme or even leave on the tumblr mobile-orientated default!

Super-who-lock: Probably still upset about the sexy-man poll. Warrior Cats: tch, those twittypets don’t know anything! End dialogue. So grab your Tardises and your quadrants and your plinko horses, we’re firing shots to keep the rent down. Image 4 shows a close-up of the Warrior Cats fandom looking in awe. Dialogue follows: Warrior Cats: Oh can we call ourselves tumblr-clan? Tumblr: That’s… the best idea I’ve heard all goddamn day. Maximum cringe, tumblrinas! end ID]

@ new users remember to set your dash to chronological. I think old users will forget to tell you this because tumblr never randomly resets it like twitter does, so afaik literally everybody switched over to chrono as soon as they tried to introduce non-chrono, and then promptly forgot tumblr even has a non-chrono view. on tumblr we really dont do the “all mighty algorithm” thing.

leftist antisemites are really everywhere on this hellsite making & reblogging their posts like “the Jews have too much power and privilege and actually their very recent genocide was not that bad compared to what my group experiences and antisemitism doesn’t even exist in my country and especially not in liberal spaces”

I think a lot of ya need to keep in mind that popular tumblr posts are just.. tumblr posts that happened to get popular. They are not professional articles written by career journalists. There may be incorrect information, spelling errors, biases. It may say "everyone does x", but really mean "people like me do x", because the OP did not intend for it to leave their circle of mutuals who understand their personal context. I'm not saying you can't ever criticize a post--but maybe take a second beforehand to think about whether you'd be just as harsh in judging a 3-note post your mutual spit out at 2am

Had a dream this morning that Archive of our Own had a Random button which would simply take you to a random fanfic, like Wikipedia has. (AO3 does not appear to really have this, I checked and couldn’t find one, but I kinda wish they did.) Someone had started a game where whatever fic you got, that was your new fandom, which is very fun! I would love this meme in real life.

The problem came in where so many people used the button that it broke and just started sending everyone to Stealing Harry, and like…I have fond memories of Stealing Harry but it’s not my best work and nobody should be assigned to be a Harry Potter fan in this day and age.

So I decide to go off and find Astolat and demand she fix this but when I finally did (there was a whole quest) she turned to me like the baddie in a horror flick and said, “But that’s the most random story there is” in a dark voice and I was terrified and woke up.

In the cold light of day I know there are more random stories by me on the archive, let alone by others, but I’m not going to try to get back there to argue my case. Pretty sure whatever I spoke to was actually the demon specifically assigned to plague fandom and not Astolat at all.

I’d say “get thee behind me, demon” but I know just how many porny fics on AO3 begin with that premise. (I’ve written some.) Begone foul spirit, and take your Satanic Panic with you!

a few reminders because i’m tired and angry

fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism

adult women aren’t inherently creepy for being in fandom and having hobbies apart from raising babies and doing taxes

the vast majority of people pushing back against the worrying trend of instigating harassment over fictional characters and relationships aren’t incest supporters or pedophiles, actually

liking a m/f ship doesn’t make someone a dirty heterosexual invading your space

preferring gay ships doesn’t make you ‘’woke’’ and good

no one owes you a disclaimer that they are a good person who recognizes that their favorite fictional villain’s actions are evil and that they don’t condone those actions irl

liking a fictional villain is in no way comparable to advocating abuse/murder/genocide/etc and you’re a fucking idiot if you believe that

just because a woman is attracted to a fictional villain doesn’t mean she’s promoting toxic relationships or going to end up in a toxic relationship. assuming women can’t tell fiction and reality apart stinks of internalized misogyny

some rando’s a/b/o fanfics have none of the level of influence that popular tv shows and movies spreading propaganda have

no one owes you a detailed description of their traumas and mental health problems

abusive relationships are not the same as enemies to lovers ships

y’all need to chill the fuck out over people, relationships, actions and events that don’t actually exist and learn how to enjoy and discuss them like normal people

fandom is a hobby, not a form of activism

feel free to add more

The best dynamic for a group of characters: every single one of them is the weirdest person you will ever meet, but in wildly different ways.  Every time you think you’ve identified “the normal one” they casually reveal that they don’t think birds exist, or they fistfight grizzly bears on the weekends, or they collect human skulls, and you realize again that none of these people are remotely normal.

Also they’re found family.

already got a blazed marvel post. the adpocalypse is closer than we think so heres your daily PSA

don't interact with corporate tumblr accounts

yes even to dunk on them. i don't care if you have the sickest burn of the century lined up, don't even give them the time of day

the eventual and inevitable fall of twitter marks a change in the advertising industry, and tumblr is unclaimed territory. if we want tumblr to remain the social media bastion it has become, it needs to remain as unappealing to corporations as possible. do not engage. in a marketing strategist's eyes, any kind of attention is good attention. don't "silence, brand" them. don't kungpowpenis them. don't send them hate anons. don't hate-follow them. corporate tumblrs are not a single entity and they will not be harassed off this site. we only have a shot at repelling them because of tumblr's lack of an algorithm. so turn off recommended posts on your dashboard, put it chronological order, and install an adblocker. if you don't seek out these blazed posts and actively ignore them when they happen upon you, the corporations will starve. in this case, the best kind of protest is a silent one

A thread of writing tips

A year ago or so I asked you guys to send in your best writing tips. I've compiled a list of some of the responses below. Oh, let's just ignore that it's been a whole year.

1. Take writing advice with a grain of salt. Every writer’s brain is different. Every person’s life is different. Every creative style is different. What works for some people won’t work for another. On top of that, some advice is just plain not helpful in the first place. So try to limit how much writing advice you take in because it can leave you spinning like a top until you can’t tell which way is up. Read more, write more and you’ll figure out what works for you eventually. [from @the-writers-bookshelf]

2. If you ever get stuck, vent about it to a friend or a notes document until a way forward presents itself. [from @scarlet-curls]

3. Be gentle with yourself. If you push yourself too hard too fast, you’re going to burn out, and then you either won’t be able to write anything, or you’re not going to particularly enjoy it, because you’re trying squeeze the last drops of water from a dry sponge. If you are burnt out, give yourself time to fill back up. Absorb other people’s work as a reader, as a viewer, as a general consumer. Let it give you inspiration and enthusiasm about your work again, and then when you feel ready, go back to writing. A metaphor I liked is that creating is breathing out, and enjoying other’s mediums is breathing in. As you breathe in more, you’re probably going to get the desire to create, but if you only exhale, you might metaphorically pass out. [from @writing-with-olive]

4. Arrive late, leave early. That advice has really helped me cut the excess out of scenes, and find what's essential / what's really adding to the story. It also keeps you hanging on, feeling excited to write the next scene because you're not divulging too much. You're jumping in and out of situations that are hopefully interesting to the audience / reader, and exploring those scenes, fleshing them out, then moving on. It’s just about balancing when is the right moment to move on, the right moment to cut the dialogue etc. Lots of trial and error, there! [from @spejdeir]

5. Start with the big picture. Always start with a one sentence summary. You don’t need any more than that. A beginning, vague middle, and an end. THEN start adding details. That sentence becomes a paragraph, then a page, then ten pages, and eventually a book. But start with just one sentence. [from @mj-is-writing]

6. Visualize. So you know what's going to happen in your chapter/short story. A's gonna chat with B before they fight monsters and kiss. With more details of course. Before you even approach the keyboard I want you to visualize it. Watch it like a movie in your own head. Daydream the situation. I do it in the shower and before I fall asleep most regularly.

It helps work out the kinks, the awkward points, and makes sure the scene flows naturally. Oh you paused because feels disconnected? Better to fix it now before you had a whole few paragraphs written about this. It helps with my flow a bit and makes sure I really know what's going on. [from @fablesrose]

7. If you are trying to build a writing habit, have a fairly solid writing schedule. It could be every day, it could be writing every few days, it could be once a week. Each time, open up your WIP, and read the last few paragraphs. If you’re coming up on burnout and reaaaalllly don’t want to write, that’s okay. Don’t write for now. But there’s a difference between burnout and “meh I kinda don’t wanna,” and opening up your WIP forces you to at least show up, ruling out the second state of mind. And remember - if you do decide not to write, don’t beat yourself up about it. Taking a rest is the smart move. [from @writing-with-olive]

8. Read the dialogue out loud while editing :) [from @loki-hargreeves]

9. Mine is, the often parroted, read a lot and write a lot. Honestly, best way to find your own writing style is to find the techniques/tropes/kind of character arcs you like best in media, and practice different ways of putting them together. If you want something a little less over said, I’d say make sure you take some time to care of your physical and mental health. As a person whose struggled with this in the past, let me tell you, it affects your creativity and productivity waaay more than you might thing. [from @ren-c-leyn]

10. When you first write something, it's not gonna be perfect. And that's okay. What you wanna do is go back later and fix and/or revise anything that you feel needs that. Also, it's good to make a character have breaks in their own dialogue. Whether they lose their train of thought or simply forget a word, it's okay. If anything, it makes it seem more realistic. [from @thedragonemperess]

11. Write in the time of hour that works best for you. If you’re a morning person, write in the morning. I always write in late afternoon or evening when the house stars to get silent. The neighbors children gone to bed and maybe a little sound of the tv from neighboring is buzzing in the background. [from @tildathings]

12. Never feel bad about writing what you know about. That's not to say you have to write what you know about, but there's nothing wrong with drawing from your own experiences and things you're confident with to help the words flow. That, and don't worry about writing tips, just be you :-) [from @ncruuk]

13. The first draft of your writing doesn't have to be perfect. Just write what ever you want without caring about the grammar, vocabulary etc. [from @yoon2jk]

14. Writing is different for anybody. It can be fast for this entity, while it will kinda take a while for this person right 'ere. Take your time, if you rush yourself you're just gonna burn your inspiration and will only delay you from writing or even stop you completely. Write in your own pace, it can be months, or week, heck it could even be a few hours. Just write comfortably. [from @tayooh]

15. Write garbage, and write it all the time. Have a writing journal, or a folder on your computer for writing journaling. Do stream of consciousness, do prompts, write whatever stupid thing comes to mind, don’t vet it, don’t dismiss anything, just write it. Write a hundred words, a thousand, just write write write.

Chances are, none of this will make any progress on your WIPs, even if you’re writing about your OCs or scenes from/related to your WIPs. That isn’t the important part. The important part is that you’re training your brain to write more and write better. The more you write, the more willing you are to write garbage... the easier it is to write when you need to, the better the writing will be, because you’ve already been practicing and thinking about your writing techniques.

I don’t mean to say “real writers write every day” or anything, that’s not what this is. All I’m getting at is that the more you write the easier writing gets, and the more willing you are to write a hundred words of nonsense, the easier you’ll find it to write a thousand words of prose.[from @the-bard-writes]
