In 2021, there were roughly 2,717 antisemitic incidents reported across the United States. This was a 34% increase from the year prior. Thanks to the recent rise in neo-nazi rhetoric from political figures, celebrities, and online personalities, this number is expected to increase in 2022. I see a lot of people talking about avoiding obvious dog whistles, but very few explaining how to identify them. So, that’s what I hope to do today.

WHAT IS A DOGWHISTLE?

As defined by Oxford Languages, a Dog Whistle is a subtly aimed political message which is intended for, and can only be fully understood by, a particular group. Politicians will try to manipulate their audience by using alienating phrases, and in the process, dehumanizing those they’re speaking about while also having a margin of plausible deniability. For example, let’s take the term “illegal alien”. When we think of aliens, we think of little green dudes who suck us up in flying saucers to probe our anal glands. We think of xenomorphs and The Thing, creatures that are out to get us normal folks. However, “illegal alien” is meant to refer to immigrants who migrated here through unofficial channels. These are people. Saying “these human beings need to be deported” won’t drum up as much of a response as “these illegal aliens need to be deported”.

WHAT ARE COMMON DOG WHISTLES?

Blood Libel-

An ancient superstition that Jewish people will kill non-Jews, typically babies or young people, for the purpose of drinking their blood. This myth has inspired many vampire stories, most infamously Dracula and Nosferatu, and fuels a lot of modern day conspiracies. Ever hear “these celebrities are bathing in the blood of babies to stay young”? Well, this is where that comes from. It should be noted that Romani people are often the targets of similar rumors. This is obviously untrue.

Cabal-

Similar dogwhistles include but aren’t limited to the New World Order, The Elites, Globalism, Illuminati, and the Reptilians.

The term itself stems from the word Kabbalah, which was a Jewish mystical interpretation of the Hebrew Bible. It is meant to describe a secret group of people, mainly Jews, that control the world’s governments, economies, and media. Not only is this blatantly stupid, as most of the people in power are wildly antisemitic themselves (just look at Elon Musk), but it’s also just ignoring the obvious and observable fact that corporations and money drive politics and not a secret shadowy government. We don’t need a shadow when we’re already shady.

(((echo)))-

Have you ever seen a person partially censor the name of a celebrity or a fandom they’re discussing to avoid fans coming onto the post and giving them shit for it? (For example, I’ve seen a couple people post things under tags like #lum*ty when they don’t like the ship) This is the same idea, except it’s almost exclusively used by neo-Nazis to talk about Jewish people. It saw a resurgence in popularity with the introduction of a chrome extension called the Coincidence Detector, which put these parentheses around the names of any of the over 8,000 Jewish people in their database. It was mainly used on Twitter.

Jews Killed Jesus/30 Pieces of Silver-

In the Bible, Judas, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples, was bribed by the Romans to turn in Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Many people use that as evidence to say jews killed Jesus. However, anyone who has read the Bible can tell you, Jesus was also Jewish. And so were the rest of his disciples. And his mother. If anything, Jews birthed Jesus and made him into the man he was. Y’all should be thankful.

Not The Real Jews-

This typically refers to the black Israelite theory, where the tribes of Israel relocated to Africa once the Kingdom of Israel was destroyed. They claim Ashkenazi Jews are imposters, and that black people are the real Jews. There are certainly black Jewish people out there, and they’re lovely af and deserve all the support in the world. However, the people espousing the black Israelite theory cannot be further from the truth. Judaism originated in what is now considered the Middle East with the prophet Abraham who settled in Canaan which is what we know now as Israel/Palestine. Around 722 BC, the Assyrians conquered the northern part of the territory and forced the 10 tribes of Israel to move further up north, and the Babylonians did the same to the Tribes of Judah a little later on. Not to mention when they were eventually overtaken by Alexander the Great. For the majority of history, Judaism was focused in the northern part of the Middle East and the southern part of Europe. To reflect that, Ashkenazi Jews share the most genetic similarity to the Greeks and Turkish folks. There is no evidence to suggest that Ashkenazi Jews are in any way fake. Again this does not mean there are no black Jews, there certainly are, but you don’t have to deny the validity of the ashkenazi to prove that. They are all Jewish. Not to mention, those who espouse the black Israelite theory rarely practice Judaism themselves.

14-

This refers to the 14 words, which are "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." It is typically placed in social media bios alongside 88, which stands for Heil Hitler.

SITES AND ORGANIZATIONS TO AVOID

BitChute-

An alternative to YouTube created in 2017 after the adpocolypse nuked many alt-right channels. You can find anything on here, from your average conspiracy videos titled “Why are some people seeing demonic entities after the vaccine?” with the Decorative font from MS word in the thumbnail, to ISIS beheadings and Atomwaffen recruitment videos. I am not kidding about any of those.

Daily Stormer-

A popular Neo-Nazi website and message board made by Andrew Anglin to spread antisemitic conspiracies and his weird 9/11 fanfics. It’s not used as much as it used to be, but this site played a large part in propping up figures like Milo Yianapolis who has been recently hanging out with Kanye. Which I find funny, as he admitted to wanting to fuck young boys on the Amazing Atheist’s podcast and that it was a totally normal thing. Even Ben Shapiro hated that guy from the beginning.

Parler-

Twitter but more racist.

Gab-

Twitter but more racist and more buggy.

Twitter-

This is mainly a joke but you should be very mindful that Twitter has always had a neo-Nazi problem, and it’s worse now than ever.

Twitter but owned by Elon Musk

InfoWars-

Owned and operated by Alex Jones, not only do they scam their viewers out of thousands of dollars, spread lies about mass shootings, harass innocent families who lost their loved ones in horrifying tragedies, play a key role in orchestrating the January 6th attack on the capital, but they also spread antisemitic conspiracies.

CONCLUSION

It’s important to acknowledge that absolutely anyone can fall for these dog whistles without even being aware of it. Recently, my brother started falling down this horrid rabbit hole thanks to Kanye’s rhetoric and despite everything I’ve tried to warn him about, he’s not listening. By posting this, I hope to stop at least one person from following that path. Now more than ever, we need to stand with the Jewish community and show our support. Stay safe out there.

I wish everyone who is making this week all about Taylor Swift a very nice « shut the fuck up. »

Don’t get me wrong, I love Taylor just as much as the next basic middle class white girl, but I’m also Jewish, and seeing people post incessantly about the Taylor/Kanye beef instead of acknowledging the real problems honestly makes me sick.

Here are the facts: there are 15 million Jews world wide. That’s less than half of Kanye’s Twitter followers. Kanye got suspended from Twitter not for the anti-semitism but for posting an unflattering picture of Elon musk, showing that the man in charge of the worlds most powerful social media platform is fine with hate speech unless it’s against him. AND one of Kanye’s most outspoken supporters, who obviously agrees with his views, is running for president again. Do I think he’ll win? No, but I’m genuinely afraid that if he does, we may be looking at 1939 2: electric boogaloo.

Being Jewish is a great time. It’s also fucking terrifying. Once a century, someone tries to wipe us all off the face of the earth, and this century hasn’t had their try yet. Anyone, Jewish or otherwise, who’s ever read a history book knows that Kanye’s words have real, awful repercussions.

And if you’re making this about some petty shit that happened at the VMAs 13 years ago, then congrats. It’s you, you’re the problem, it’s you.

The amount of mask-off antisemitism coming out around the Kanye West and Kyrie Irving situations is genuinely making me feel sick and I’m not even Jewish. Jewish followers/people reading this post, I’m so fucking sorry, y’all don’t deserve this shit. I wish people would finally leave you the fuck alone.

If you’re trying to defend Kanye or whatever by saying “well maybe he has a point about the Jews,” genuinely go fuck yourself to the deepest pits of hell.

sorry, but kanye shouldn’t have to verbally confirm to everyone that “yes, i literally am a for-real nazi” for people to get the message.

it shouldn’t have been allowed to get this far in terms of public platforming. we knew he was a nazi. we didn’t need to give him constant platforming for two months in order for him to “explain himself”. when someone espouses antisemitic conspiracy, BHI extremist beliefs, and holocaust denial/revisionism, they are a nazi.

if kanye hadn’t literally labeled himself a nazi, there would still be millions of people arguing that he isn’t one— despite the fact that he believes almost every core tenet of modern nazism.

the only thing this platforming has succeeded in is spreading antisemitic conspiracy theories to a whole new audience (not to mention dragging nick fuentes and milo yiannopoulos back into the mainstream). the level of normalization and indifference towards these kinds of beliefs on public platforms is terrifying.

this is what happens when people are too scared to call a spade, a spade.

I know everyone is clowning on Kanye rn (fucking rightfully so) but please, PLEASE be more aware of subtle antisemitism and look out for your jewish friends. Antisemitism is rising and we're not fucking safe, just take 5 minutes out of your day to look up dogwhistles and just completely deplatform nazis and white nationalists by either punching them or kicking them square in the ass (killing them is also morally okay!)

not me realizing that people are…defending alex jones? for “calling out” ye west? you know that he didn’t “call out” ye for being antisemitic, right. he did it because ye was being Too Obviously Antisemitic. ye killed his plausible deniability.

alex jones has made his living for over a decade on walking RIGHT up to that line and not overtly crossing it. he goes off about a “globalist conspiracy” every time he’s on air. he talks about the “jewish mafia.” ye just walked right over the line and said “Hitler was a good guy actually.” alex jones isn’t horrified at what ye said. it’s that ye said it OUT LOUD, ON AIR, WHILE STREAMING.

i refuse to live in an era of rehabilitation of alex fucking jones. jesus christ you guys.

Kanye West, who was originally banned on Twitter for being openly antisemetic, gets unbanned -- because "free speeech" and all. He immediately posts a swastika. The tweet is up for hours, uncontested by twitter. EVENTUALLY it gets taken down (more in response to the public outrage about it than because of the tweet itself, it appears), but West's account is still active.

He then posts an unflattering picture of Elon Musk. Immediately gets suspended.

Further confirmation that at twitter, it's OK to openly support literal Nazism, but not ok to be mean to the twitter overlord.

I'm not sure if people are paying attention to Kanye West's appearance on InfoWars, but you should be.

"Why should I care what one right-wing nut job says to other right-wing nutjobs?"

BECAUSE THIS IS A REAL THING THAT HAS TANGIBLE IMPACT ON JEWISH LIVES

Kanye West denied the Shoah on the program. He said that he "loved the Nazis." He said that he "loved Hitler."

Yes, he is mentally ill. That does not excuse this at all- especially because this is going out to his fans.

There are more fans of Kanye West than there are Jewish people on Earth

Kanye, along with Nick Fuentes- a white supremacist- said some shit so atrocious that Alex Jones was the one trying to pull them back- an insane turn of events.

This will have an impact on Jewish people. People are going to be more antisemitic- already, antisemitic hate crimes are rising around both the United States and the world.

Listen to your Jewish friends. Listen to the people impacted by this hate speech.

We will outlive them.

Am Yisrael Chai.

A particularly nasty side to antisemitism — it’s been part of Ye’s message recently though it is by no means unique to him — is this implication that they’re just the ones saying out loud what the rest of us are thinking. And I just want to say, unequivocally, fuck you. You don’t get to claim me. You don’t get to use me as a bullet against people I care about. It’s not what I think, and I’m confident it’s not what any of my friends think because if I wasn’t confident, they wouldn’t be my friends. I’m not silently agreeing with you — I’m VOCALLY disagreeing with you. Your beliefs are pathetic. Go fuck yourself.

As a Jewish person who suffers from bipolar disorder, I have no sympathy for Kanye West. Bipolar disorder turned me into an apathetic, irresponsible person, sure, but it never turned me into a fucking Nazi. There is no manic episode that could make me shout racist slurs, or spew such vile things. When I was manic, I turned into a promiscuous alcoholic, not a bigot. Turning into a Nazi isn't in the DSM5, I can assure you.

Kanye West has more followers on Twitter than there are Jews worldwide. He is one of the most famous people on earth. The fact he can go on an antisemitic rampage without consequences is terrifying. If you're not a Jew, your Jewish friends need your allyship more than ever right now.

Kanye West isn't an asshole because he's bipolar. He's a racist, antisemitic asshole who happens to be bipolar.

Hi

With the current news about the antisemitic fuckhead known as Kanye West trending, I have been seeing people say "death of the author" in response to if it's alright to continue listening to his music

Let me be brutally clear: death of the author does not mean what you think it means

"Death Of The Author" specifically is in reference to the theory that a creator can not put meaning behind work, but instead only create something through THEIR EXPERIENCES AND BIASES (this is important) and let the audience put meaning onto it themselves, because art is subjective.

So when you create something, you are putting pieces of yourself into the work you create, since humans are silly creatures who tend to think within the scope of their own life and experiences. He has put pieces of his rotten way of thinking into everything he has touched, and unfortunately he makes money off every single click or stream of his music. When you support his music, even the old stuff, you are literally giving money to the things he's saying. Past and present.

Death Of The Author is NOT

Enjoying things regardless of who made them

Ignoring the implications within a creative work simply because you like it and do not want to feel bad about liking it

Completely disregarding entire communities of people who's very existences are at risk just so you don't have to acknowledge your own inner problems such as racism, ableism, homophobia, etc

"But Weems," I hear you cry, "Kanye wasn't saying these things when he made this music!"

No you're right, he wasn't always mentally unstable and quite literally spewing Nazi rhetoric openly, but for the past decade, he's been getting to this point and he ABSOLUTELY has been showing signs of megalomaniac tendencies ("I told you who I am! A God!").

Again, if you're giving him any attention right now through his music, you're literally paying him to continue to act like this. Even if you pirate it or have had it for awhile, that includes you types before you say "but what about-"

Honestly I don't think his music is even worth potentially labeling yourself a Nazi-sympathizer.

And now you know what "Death Of The Author" means and why it does not apply.

So start correcting people and shutting down the idea that we can still consume products or creative works made by people who want to commit genocide when their bigotry is literally engraved into the work they've put out.

Support your local Jewish and Romani creators.

Have a nice day

Hey, just in case people who already have been having a bad time with this meme are retriggered by Francesca Scorcese's TikTok – Goncharov is fake. Martin Scorsese's daughter is real, and that's her real TikTok account, and presumably that is really her father. But Martin is just being a good sport by rolling with it and admitting he made it. The link Francesca sent him is the NYT article clearly saying it's a fake movie.

PLEASE reblog this and DO NOT TAG IT UNREALITY. "Unreality" is for posts that are keeping up the bit, but info posts, reality-affirming posts and ones talking about the meme as a meme are solidly real. We really haven't been doing a good enough job tagging this properly and protecting neurodivergent people from being gaslit and traumatized. I've seen way too many people saying they nearly had a breakdown because of being lied to. We never meant to hurt you, and I'm so sorry people were jackasses when you wanted to know the truth.

There is something you Disney gays need to understand.

The Walt Disney Corporation never has, and never will be, your friend or ally.

Disney is a multi billion dollar conglomerate.

Their one and only goal is to make more money than they did the previous year.

That is it.

They aren't trying to help you or your community.

Any politics they have either reflects the best way for them to make money or it was because someone put political pressure on them to do it. Or it is a publicity stunt.

"But what about creators like Dana Terrace? Or the history of queer people in animation?"

Listen to me. Artists like Dana and others do not work at The Rat because they want to.

They work there because Disney buys up every other little animation company there is and shuts it down, ensuring that any money being made from the medium is going to them.

DreamWorks and a tiny handful of others are the only ones left in western animation.

I am not kidding.

Blue Sky, who made Ice Age, was one of Disneys latest victims.

They shut down all production, even for things that were nearly complete, on all products that did not fit their brand.

Such as the movie adaption of Lumber Janes, a queer focused comic by ND Stevenson (creator of the She-Ra reboot).

As for the historical guys, such as Howard Ashman AKA the father of the Disney Renaissance, they may have worked there and done amazing things but it doesn't mean they were respected by the company.

Howard and his fellow gay artists were only allotted the creative freedom to work because at the time Disney was nearly penniless and this was a last ditch effort to save the company.

Gay artists may have risen Disney up, but it does not mean that the company cares for them or us.

In the eyes of these boardroom execs, the artists are tools needed to make a profit.

And gay consumers are the fools who will buy the rainbows-colored sweatshop produced products and call the company woke.

So. What can we do about this?

Rule #1: Avoid giving Disney money at all costs.

I know this is really hard because they own literally everything. But do your best.

This also includes any of their streaming services.

Buy used DVDs or just pirate.

And before anyone gets their panties in a wad about wanting support queer creators like Dana Terrace, let me remind you:

Creators and animators are paid a lump some regardless of if something does well or not.

All that revenue produced by things like Gravity Falls or Luca goes to the execs and stock holders, not the people responsible.

Rule #2- Support artists directly

If you like things like The Owl House and Dana Terrace's work, make a lot of noise about it on social media.

Buzz absolutely is a currency and the more that is generated, the more likely that these things will get renewed.

Rule #3- Support Unions

Unions are what keeps artists from being treated like slaves.

And any union (regardless of background or career) is a good union.

Rule #4- Do not fall for Disney's bullshit

No matter how progressive they may seem, there is always an ulterior motive and always a catch.

They are not our allies no matter what.

What I Learned Watching a Co-Worker Get Forced Out
Medium
Corporate Glossary: every Friday, learn the secret meaning of common corporate words

“They’re trying to discharge her constructively. Do you know what Constructive Discharge means?” She asked.

As soon as I heard the term ‘Constructive Discharge,’ I knew I’d never seen it on a vocabulary quiz.

“No. What does it mean?” I asked.

She explained.

“Constructive discharge is a fancy way of saying “being forced out.” It’s not good. And if you’re not a lawyer or in human resources, you’ll probably learn what it means when it’s happening to you.”

“Oh my God. I’ve seen this my entire career and never knew it even had a name.” I thought.

You’ve seen constructive Discharge too. You may have experienced it. We’ve all made choices to avoid it.

Constructive discharge defined

“We can’t fire you, but we’ll make you so miserable you’ll quit, and then we won’t have to pay your unemployment.”

Then there’s the textbook definition:

“A constructive discharge occurs when your employer has made working conditions unbearable, forcing you to resign.”

Or as one person put it.

“I didn’t get handed a pink slip, but when you’re not wanted, people have a way of letting you know.”

HR isn’t always the secret police.

Employees aren’t always victims of evil-doers.

However, employers push employees out all the time to maintain and protect the, “We didn’t do anything wrong, YOU did,” power structure.

Constructive Discharge looks like this:

— Meeting invitations slow to a trickle, and you’re excluded from emails and generally looped out of what’s going on.

— People stop talking to you or stop talking when you walk in.

— Your emails don’t get answers, or they arrive too late to be of value.

— Suddenly, your work is not good enough, though nothing about your work has changed.

— Reviews, once good or even glowing, are now mediocre or bad.

— Instead of a bonus, you get a Performance Improvement Plan.

— Warnings and write-ups start so they can justify your eventual termination with documentation of your “poor performance”

— Your work, clients, assignments go away, or they overwhelm you with work.

— The words “Set up to fail” were practically invented to describe this scenario.

Constructive Discharge is illegal

It isn’t easy to prove you’re a target, and it’s even more challenging if you don’t even know constructive discharge is a real thing.

If you’ve ever experienced this and don’t fully understand what’s happening to you beyond knowing you’re in the process of being excommunicated, it can be hell. It’s not uncommon for the experience to leave long-lasting scars.

Talk to anyone who’s ever been through it. They’ll tell you.

Knowing constructive discharge exists and how it’s used gives you power to predict what’s coming and to protect yourself.

Seeing the endgame helps you in two ways.

You know what to expect. Having a sense of what’s coming next is enormously empowering. You can go on the offensive and protect yourself. Constructive discharge works to crush your ego, making you feel you did something wrong and deserve this treatment.

Without strategy, you end up being a miserable pawn in your employer’s endgame.

Remember, they’re almost certainly building a case to fire you in the event the hellscape they create for you doesn’t persuade you to quit.

If you’re getting pushed out, and you know what to look for you can prove constructive discharge and you can get unemployment benefits, be released from payback obligations on a signing bonus, and protect your mental health.

You’re not crazy, incompetent, or a failure. This is real and it’s carefully executed to leave you holding the bag and feeling like you did something wrong.

If they force you out, in addition to feeling horrible, you lose your paycheck, benefits health insurance, and possibly owe them money.

I can't stress enough how much the John Green debacle was an early example of how cancel culture and purity culture combine to make people feel righteously justified to engage in harassment.

John Green, during his time on tumblr, committed the heinous sins of...being neurodivergent and talking openly about it, earnestly interacting with fans in a very direct and unfiltered way, and writing about teenagers navigating first love and sexuality while he himself was an adult. The worst things he ever did were be a little cringe or misspeak, for which he was always prompt to apologize (often whether he really needed to or not).

Yet despite the former two being things tumblr claimed to love and the last one being true of 99.99% of YA authors, in this case a large segment of tumblr users steeped in the early 2010s resurgence of purity culture decided that these things were suspicious and predatory, and used that as an excuse to justify some truly awful behavior.

Which is really all that cancel culture is: the normalization and even celebration of the process of misapplying morality or ethics to dehumanize someone for the express purpose of justifying whatever pain and suffering you want to inflict upon them. Basically, deciding "this person is bad, so I am exempt from affording them basic respect and human dignity, and am allowed to cross any and all otherwise uncrossable lines in order to punish them without damaging my own moral or ethical standing."

Contrary to popular tumblr lore, the infamous "cock monologue" was not the sum total of the harassment, or even the worst of it. Callout blogs issued long lists of "receipts" about how terrible John Green was, most if not all of which were either taken out of context or completely refutable. His works were torn to shreds by people who'd never read them, as evidenced by much of the criticism being obviously and blatantly counter to the actual contents of the books.

Not that it mattered. Once the John Green hate party reached a certain level of critical mass, it became less about who he actually was or what he'd done, and more about proving you were a good person by hating him. That's the natural conclusion of cancel culture, after all: virtue signalling by identifying yourself in opposition to the cancelled parties. They're bad, and I'm good, so I hate them! Or, more often: They're bad, and I hate them, so I'm good!

Before it was over with, John Green had been accused, with no evidence, of being everything from a Nazi to a pedophile and subjected to hate mail and death threats. He eventually left the site for the sake of his own mental health, and because he no longer felt comfortable engaging directly with fans in the same way he once had.

Yet even now, with the benefit of hindsight, and even among those who ostensibly reject purity culture and condem bullying and harassment, very few on tumblr take what was done to John Green as seriously as it should be taken or condemn it as thoroughly as it should be condemned. Which I think is something we need to at least consider doing, given the increasing rise of purity and cancel culture online, and given the recent influx of professional creators eager to interact with fans on a more direct level than they have on other social media.

And my concern is not purely, or even primarily, for the Mike Flanagans and Lynda Carters of the world. I'm far more concerned, actually, for the small, independent or self-published creators in this space, and how much even a very small level of visibility gives too many people a feeling of carte blanche to engage in harassment.

I myself have less than 3k followers on here, a handful of popular posts, and zero notoriety or consequence outside of tumblr whatsoever, and I've been repeatedly told to kill myself for saying such innocuous things as "I don't think censorship is the cure for the world's evils" and "maybe learning the history of communities you want to participate in would be a good idea."

Thankfully, all it took for me to stop the harassment that came my way was to block those few individuals. But there have been many instances over the years of small creators or just random tumblr users that got a bit popular being stalked, doxxed, swatted, and harassed to the point of leaving the site and dealing with serious mental health issues as a result. It has never been just John Green. John Green isn't even the worst example. And tumblr has never learned its lesson.

It’s my opinion that like if a white supremacist/Nazi is going to be reformed. They need to do so willingly. The only times I’ve heard of successful rehabilitation of fascists is when they made the conscious decision to no longer be one anymore and seek atonement. People who try to like hug and change fascists that don’t want to change are fucking morons
