oh yeah the three flatland (2007) fans are gonna love this
Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, by Edwin Abbot Abbot, published in 1884, is public domain. That means it has no copyright, and belongs to everyone.
This post will have links to as many versions and adaptations of it as I can find, and will be updated whenver I find new links to add.
None of these links are piracy, because you literally cannot pirate what has no copyright. Anyone who tells you you must pay to read the original Flatland is scamming you.
The only time you should be spending money on Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, is if you find a cool physical copy that you want specifically.
Check the original post before reblogging to look for updates if you are seeing this post days, weeks, or months after I originally post it.

Hereās an animation from 1965. Contains some flashing lights.
Hereās a stop motion film from 1982 in Italian with English subtitles
Hereās an animation from 2006
The 2007 Flatland film by Ladd Ehlinger is free on youtube. Unfortunately Ladd Ehlinger is a virulently racist and misogynistic conservative who thinks feeding school kids is the same thing as slavery. His film is filled with almost constant flashing lights and spinning cameras that cause headaches, motion sickness, migraines, and seizures.
Here is a link to timestamps for these if you still choose to watch it.
The film ignores all of the politics from the original novel because the creator of the film agrees with them. You are much better off watching another visual adaption or reading the original or translated book.
Especially if you suffer from photosensitivity or motion-sickness, this film will make you want to throw up.

Related and books by other authors, in publishing order:
Public domain:
An Episode of Flatland: or How a Plane Folk Discovered the Third Dimension. With Which is Bound Up an Outline of the History of UnƦa by Charles Howard Hinton. (1907) Public domain, unlimited reading and downloading. It's terrible. But you can rewrite it to make it not terrible.
Other copyright:
Sphereland: A Fantasy About Curved Spaces and an Expanding Universe, by Dionys Burger. (1983) Can be borrowed by 1 person at a time. It's racist. Was intended to be a sequel to Flatland, but the author's racist and failed every lesson Flatland tried to teach.
The Planiverse: Computer Contact With a Two-dimensional World by Alexander Keewatin Dewdney (1984) Can be borrowed by 1 person at a time. It's the best related one so far.
Flatterland: Like Flatland, Only More So by Ian Stewart (2001) Can be borrowed by 1 person at a time. Haven't read it yet.

mark v cecil debate is way too polarized for what it is
cecil is reacting exactly how he should react. omni-man pretty much deceived them all for 20 years to the point where cecil was actually āhurtā by his betrayal (yes he mightāve known he was lying, but had no clue what he was lying about ā was his planet fake, was his government fake, was he here to protect him, was he even really a viltrumite). mark defenders saying āhow many times does he have to save the world for cecil to think heās goodā ignore the fact that omni-man saved their world MULTIPLE times over, and still was intent on committing genocide. the inner-ear device is extreme, but so is the threat that mark poses. this guy disappeared to go help his father on a faraway planet, came back with another overpowered kid, and is talking shit about how āitāll take a long time for anyone to forgive him,ā which implies that mark thinks, on some level, his father should be forgiven.
wanting to forgive nolan for everything he did but refusing to forgive any of the murderers that cecil employs is⦠super hypocritical from mark, and is exactly what he scolds oliver for doing: prioritizing people he knows and cares for over the world at large. objectively, the reanimen (who arenāt even ALIVE, theyāre donated corpses) and darkwing 2 will save more people than they hurt. mark is a killer. oliver is a killer. omni-man is a killer. mark has more compassion in his heart for killers that he loves than innocent people that he doesnāt know.
on the other hand, we the audience KNOW mark is a good guy. we know itās his prerogative to be offended, even scared, at the idea of cecil having that kind of power over him, over ANYONE that he cares about. mark is 18, first and foremost, and he didnāt get much choice in the situation heās in (though he does have choice in how he reacts to it, which he did badly because of how morally conflicted he is). it really is as simple as mark wanting to be a good person and cecil wanting to save the world. of course cecil sees his heroes as tools! itās shocking that none of the new GOG understood that earlier. the guy isnāt lying and acting like he cares any more than he does. mark is very caught up in his own situation ā reasonably so, itās a really fucking nasty one ā and canāt see things objectively, and has a sort of entitlement to him that is very normal for a guy his age, half-alien or not. itās shown when he gets pissed at debbie for sharing his identity with paul, as if it isnāt debbieās prerogative to talk about her kids, as if she hasnāt been through the same shit that he has regarding nolan. itās shown when heās berating oliver for ideas that he fostered when he killed angstrom (albeit accidentally), that itās not okay to kill even if itās to save others. no wonder oliver was confused ā heās just following his brotherās example.
on that note⦠why have a no-kill rule and then be anti-rehabilitation? mark wonāt kill the bad guys, but he wonāt accept cecil using them to save other people. thereās nuance to the situation, iām sure, but markās flying off the handle because he thinks his might is right. itās obvious from the pilot of the show, where the moment he realizes he has powers, he tells his own mom to āmake himā go to bed. mark has always wanted to be like his father, and heās trying to find a way to be LESS like him now that he knows the truth, and thatās confusing. his path is diverging unexpectedly in so many ways, and of course heās gonna struggle. heās holding onto the only stuff he knows for sure, which is that āgood guys do not kill. i am a hero, and i donāt work with villains.ā when something flies in the face of that, he freaks out, because heās losing a moral foundation of his that he grew up on.
i would even go as far as to say the fact that they call him āinvinciboyā in the news is kind of symbolic of a moral regression, where heās just going back to what he knows to be true, and sticking to it even if the ideas clash with how the world has to be ā because it isnāt all so black and white anymore, and mark has a hard time slotting himself into a world that isnāt clear-cut.
tl;dr cecilās idea is right, but markās reaction is justified not for cecilās handling of the situation, but due to markās difficulties with figuring out who āinvincibleā is.
