So, you want to write about a natural disaster to advance your plot and torture your players/characters even more? Let me tell you how, accurately.
I feel like unless it is a volcano, natural disasters are a pretty slept on plot drivers, and some of them are really cool and unique! Today, I will talk to you about land slides, earthquakes (And earthquake related disasters), and volcanoes.
Landslides: Probably one I see the least in stories, but one that would be incredibly interesting to write into a plot where they believe in curses. Landslides can happen along ocean bluffs, slightly hilly areas, and highly mountainous areas, this means it is something that can happen in most landscapes. But what can trigger a landslide? Mostly all you need to trigger a landslide could be just abnormally large amounts of rain, excessive deforestation (with a little bit of rain), or an earthquake. If you don't want to use deforestation or an earthquake as a catalyst, a really cool indicator that the land is slipping and may be prone to a collapse is J hooked trees.
This indicates that there is soil creeping slowly over time, and it may lead to a major landslide.
2. Earthquakes: Probably one of the easiest things to write, earthquakes can happen anywhere, but they are most common in places that are tectonically active areas. There are about three types of environments you can expect earthquakes to be common. The first is just rugged mountains, if your landscape looks like this, you should write in earthquakes. Associated hazards could be landslides, avalanches, and large falling rocks.
The next landscape could be a thin mountain range, next to the ocean, very scenic, but very dangerous. Essentially, I am describing a subduction zone environment.
Earthquakes in these areas could equal a couple different associated disasters. Scenario one: A very large earthquake happens, and the ocean begins to recede. This is a tsunami, enough said. If you are writing a tsunami though, please, please, do not write it as a large wave, thank you. Also, a common way people are hurt by tsunami's are from them going into the ocean because they don't understand a tsunami is going to happen.
Scenario two: A large earthquake happens, your characters are in a valley and suddenly the ground begins to liquify as the ground shakes, once the shaking stops, the ground becomes solid like nothing ever happened, except everything has suddenly sunk into the now hard ground. This is called liquefaction and it typically happens in areas that have loose dirt or lots of saturated soil.
Scenario three: There are a lot of small earthquakes, they do not cause a lot of damage, but you begin to notice that one of the isolated mountains has a plume rising. Earthquakes can indicate lava moving underground and the filling of magma chambers.
The next environment that can host lots of earthquakes would be regions that have a lot of really deep valleys and small mountain ranges (not cone volcanoes), but overall seems pretty flat.
This indicates a transform fault like the San Andreas. If you want to hint at there being earthquakes in the area, you can show fence posts that are suddenly several feet out of line at a dilapidated farm or something similar.
(These earthquakes are different because they are cased from sideways movement, not an up-and-down movement this hint can only be used for this environment). Volcanoes would not be found here, but liquefaction and landslides could still occur here.
4. Volcanoes: If you thought earthquakes had a lot of information, volcanoes do too. First you have to ask yourself, what kind of volcano you want to have, what kind of eruption style? So lets break down the kind of eruptions you can have and what their landscapes look like. Hawaiian Shield volcano: This will produce a smooth fast lava, the landscape typically is pretty flat, but there will be small cones and the rocks can have a ropey or jagged texture and the rocks will be almost exclusively black to dark red.
Stratovolcanoes: These will be solitary mountains, typically, that look like perfect cones (Picture shown in earthquake section). These will have large ash cloud eruptions and pyroclastic flows, they may have some lava, but typically most damage is done from the pyroclastic flows (think Pompeii). Some hints of these, other than describing the cone features (which can be hidden by other mountains), would be to talk about petrified wood! Trees can get fossilized in the ash and I imagine it would be very strange to find this rock that clearly looks to be a piece of wood, but its a rock. Subcategory- Calderas: Used to be a large stratovolcano, but they erupt so explosively that the entire cone collapses and creates a basin.
There are a lot of kinds of volcanoes out there, so forgive me for just putting an infographic and then talking to you about these really rare types of eruptions that I feel like people should know about.
Okay lets talk about blue lava (kind of) and black lava
You will notice the lava is still red in the middle of this image, during the day these would look like a normal eruption, but at night the burning sulfur would make it appear blue. Some cool features other than this, would be that any water in the area would become very acidic and burn the skin due to sulfuric acid. This would again be really cool if you are trying to describe a 'cursed' land.
Black lava: This happens only in the east African rift I believe, but it is a carbonatite lava, but if you are writing in a rift valley (where the continent is tearing apart to form a new ocean) this might be a cool feature. The lava will cool white and will quickly erode, it makes for a very alien landscape!
Anyway as always, this is supposed to be an introductive guide for the basics of writing geology to create cool landscapes/features into dnd or fictional universes, if you are a geologist please understand my oversimplification of tectonics, I didn't want people to run away.
yo! do you have a tag list for your writing/worldbuilding posts? absolutely love your stuff but i cannot keep up b/c of the amount if people i follow haha
Hello and thank you so much! I don't have a tag list yet but I can add some from here on out for art and writing posts đ
Oh yeah forgot to mention that I'm only posting on weekends for the sake of my sanity lmao
There will be periodic advertisement for my RP server based around this world because this Tumblr account is like my last ditch effort to get anywhere with it, so please forgive me if self-promo is something you dislike. I've cancelled the server so the project will primarily be on Tumblr for now because there's a lot to revise. Again.
If anyone needs a less absurd version of any specific post, please don't be afraid to ask on the posts or in my ask box.

If you'd like to be added to my tag list, feel free to shoot me a dm or ask in my ask blog!
General rules for commenting and dming because I'm too lazy to do full paragraphs of whats and whys- 1- I don't want to see hate speech anywhere on this damn blog. Race, religion, sexuality, identity, financial situation, etc, don't want to see it. Under this rule I'd also put really offhanded comments pertaining to anything like SH, SA, rape, violence in general whether it's to yourself or others. There's a time and place for shit like that and it's not here or now. Don't want to see that kind of crap in my DMs either.
2- This isn't really an RP blog so it's preferable to avoid trying to RP in asks or comments, but honestly I don't care too much so long as it's appropriate. In DMs I don't really mind but no guarantee of a quick response because I use Tumblr on PC only. Discord is the best way to reach me.
3- No nsfw comments or DMs. I want to leave this blog open and safe for people both under and over 18 honestly I hope I can inspire a younger user with my work since I started this project when I was under 16. Just don't be inappropriate, god's sake. 4- In the rare case where I somehow get fanart for this world, please tag me! I will gladly reblog even if it's a shitpost.
5- Whatever art of my own that I post on here will be watermarked because of the running art theft problem on social media + rise of the AI, but still don't post my art anywhere outside of Tumblr or my Discord server if you join it. Trusting fellow artists to understand this as the fellows under the brush.
Hikarina got the shit going so now more kingdoms will pop into existence in the nest 60,000 years
à sthenar's island keeps moving and merges with a giant mountain range, so that's their territory and they call it the Gyvorkal Mountains Fulegria becomes Fulegor Adontium but still has their crisis The Hikarinians and Yƫregians gave hope to remaining undecided survivors of The Fall that they could find a place in the world, so some began to sail out to the other continents they saw hints of from across the oceans Some feared that those landmasses from across the sea were only islands, and so held off on sailing until someone from the leaving groups returned Some Lunarisians travelled north to the frozen landmass they saw, learning to wield bitter frost to create icy paths through sea They never came back and some hope was lost, but more decided to sail away, believing the northerners had found land The frozen north became Halinskor, and the kingdom that would be established Yukiosa, the kingdom of ice Some Urthalisans sailed east to the continent saturated in elemental energies, learning to tame the capricious sea They created large boats which they propelled with their power, and found new land they called Jin'hu-Guo, establishing Walekria, the kingdom of water Unlike the Yukiosans, after only a thousand years, they came back for the remaining survivors on the now named continent of Yinorael, bringing fleets to ferry them to the elemental continent. Many went with the Walekrians except for a small group of Urthalisans that wished to find their own way, and this lot sailed south to the continent of Kavathanar, finding the half elves that had isolated themselves for many thousands upon thousands of years They chose to join these people in their mysterious ways and over generations would become indistinguishable from them, but never went back to Yinorael Those that went with the Walekrians would gain new power as they traversed the continent, bringing with them new kingdoms. Some Lunarisians found a light in the caves of which they followed to find abundances of minerals, and so they called the land Cevris Astal and established the subterranean kingdom of earth, Föllen Alatsa
Some Solarians felt the heat of magma that reminded them of the sun they once loved, and so they called the scorched land Emorscal and established the kingdom of flame, Flaerna
Some Urthalisans travelled through cavernous darkness along a river that seemed to breathe and found a vast cave of crystals that radiated with the glow of Asurei, and so they established the kingdom of crystal bearing the name of Lustarise, a name shared by the cave system that birthed the kingdom
Those that followed the Flaernans but did not embrace fire traveled northeast and discovered the arid desert, yet they were not satisfied with the scorching heat it brought There was no other land that they felt a call to, and this one they felt was closest to the sun they once embraced, and so they called the land Desaebla and established the kingdom of sand, Dalirna But not all of those that came to the new continent had found a place where they belonged, so they would be guided by observant beings to lands and powers they could call their own Cirania, a benevolent being among the Dysheraln descended from the Dak-Shan of old, decided to lead one of the outlier groups to the land of forests and grasslands, teaching them to embrace the powers of nature despite it not being a legitimate element, and so this land of green and the new kingdom of nature would both be named Floernia The Sky Lords, the four elves that fused with powerful air elementals over a hundred thousand years ago, would come down from the air lands above to lead another of the outlier groups to the land above the clouds, teaching them to embrace the sky instead of the distant sun and moon, and so this land far above would be named Syklari, and the kingdom of air, Avianaen, would be established The final outlier group would find their place in the continent a century later, still clinging to their roots of celestial power from the solar and lunar legacy that died after The Fall Two beings would descend from the dark of night and light of stars to bring the group past a dense forest to the north- Sarkath, The Celestial One, and Qilanar, The Black Serpent They would each bless one half of the group, with Sarkath granting his half the ability to reach towards the stars once more and draw power from stellar energies, and Qilanar granting her half the ability to pierce through the darkness of space and draw power from the inky blackness that embraced the stars These elves would call the land Qisara Kranor and establish the kingdom of Zodiana, worshipping the wyrm-like beings almost as if they were gods Elemental energies still spread throughout the world and Asurei still tainted the atmosphere, so the elves would continue to diverge and gain their own distinct adaptations and appearances to their lands until few resembled the Solarians, Lunarisians, and Urthalisans of the past(except Yƫregians and Föllen Alatsans still looked mostly like Lunarisians since they didn't need to change much) However, as thousands of years passed and each kingdom gained their separate identities, they would forget their blood ties from the ages long past to reach for individual futures This would mark the start of the modern era, but also the start of war- a concept the elves had not contemplated since the Dak-Shan were defeated over eight hundred thousand years ago in the distant forgotten past.
Just had an idea for a zine where each issue begins with a short description of an original fictional world and each artist has to create something from that world. Whether itâs a grand landscape piece, a scientific article about one of the worldâs strange creatures, or a short personal story from one of the inhabitants, every artist would contribute something to the collaborative fiction of the new world.
this will be relevant soon :)
This is a note to myself Elementals- foreign beings from the elemental planes Primordials- beings that sprung from Elvaria when elemental energies started bleeding into the world Elementals aren't like fully sentient beings from the view of a regular person, they're more than that but sort of in a lower dimension way(?), like if people think in 3D(concept of length width and depth so having a tangible idea of space and being limited to what can be seen from a point on a 3d object like a globe), elementals think more like 2d where they're missing the idea of "limits" and inherently will not understand strictly 3d concepts unless they fuse with something 3d(so like half elves on Elvaria just think normally but with a different perspective of existence compared to before they became half elves) Abstract ideas to us are not abstract to elementals, that's how they think normally and vice versa with regular beings
They're not simple and have different needs than Lower Realm beings so they don't need ideas like distinct cultures or individuality, but rather the desire to spread influence Bringing elemental energies to Elvaria to them was extending a gift to the elves and embracing the world's "potential" as it now had the energy(asurei) to "reach" and break through limits, while the elves at the time saw it as making their problems worse and the elemental energy as bleeding into the world instead of a gift for them to prosper The elves in the modern day think of elementals as cryptic and foreign beings but elemental energies are now widely used and there is definitely more appreciation towards it
Primordials are not that smart and were never meant to be, they're basically when things in the world have the spark of "potential" and elemental energies will seep into them to create a core in something, which will spring out a primordial from similar structures(ie volcanoes created the fire giants but the main core was in Embylviska) Since they lack the kind of spark elementals have, they're very simple and think like animals even if their thoughts are "3d" Half-elementals are right in between, since by technicality they're from the world but were created from outside means that didn't come from the elementals. Their intelligence also varies since it's determined by whoever created them
So what is the "potential"? Honestly I have no idea yet, but for now the idea is ability to adapt or if it's at a certain threshold that makes it distinct from others of the same kind The ability to adapt doesn't necessarily have to have been there from the start, it can be triggered from a specific event that gives everything in the world "potential" and that "potential" will attract elementals to it naturally Not every world in the Lower Realm will have "potential", so not every world has an elemental presence. There still may be elements, but they're just regular elements like in the real world Half elves aren't necessarily elves with more "potential" than others, but rather what's most convenient for an elemental seeking to assimilate because of its core losing energy
Unfortunately for me, carrd did not let me make my own portfolio site because of the 50-asset limit. Fortunately for you guys, I have about 29 short stories planned and some rewrites, so maybe this account will come back to life but that highly depends on my life and motivation.
I'll likely also be posting on Ao3 when my account is approved. I'll make an update post with my username when that happens.
Don't know if anyone will see this, but if you previously followed me, thanks for sticking around :)
My taglists are pretty much dead in the water now and I don't want people randomly seeing pings after a year of silence, so if you'd like to join, please DM me.
He of Entropy, of Sentience, and the creator of the Laws of Order. The catalyst to the creation of new Existences from inertia, from the nothingness of Nix.
My kin have long forgotten of Ulym, our forefather whose birth sparked the very first Existence. From it formed the concepts of a flow of time from which would mark the birth and death of universes and ends of cycles, a stabilized space for astral bodies to form upon, alternate universes and countless dimensions where life could be born, and of course, the essence of what is 'nothingness'.
With his birth did Nix first appear as the embodiment of the inertia before Ulym's entropy, then I as the embodiment of a universe branching into countless others, then Tilisnet as the embodiment of a Cycle taking motion, and ending with Seclir as the embodiment of a plane for creation.
When life first began to form in the very first Cycle, he gained twenty one strange 'eyes' that circled behind him, each of them starting closed.
The strange mortals foretold that when the day came where all of these 'eyes' would open, we would be obliterated and our existences reset to the time before even Ulym was born, an event that would come to be known as the Severance Unto Nihility.
We had all assumed it was nonsense, and as the many cycles passed, we simply watched as each 'eye' opened, paying no need and noticing no significant issues out of the norm.
By the ten thousand eight hundred seventh Cycle, though, nineteen 'eyes' had opened and Seclir would be the first to declare that the Existence of that Cycle had become unstable. Tilisnet would also take notice, and I myself saw as the space between universes and dimensions would shift and shatter with increasing frequency.
Ulym himself was becoming increasingly unstable as he began to cause excessive entropy, but he tried to assure us that this would be temporary and the next Cycle would return to how they were in the past.
When the next Cycle was born, it was not normal as we had thought it would be. The various worlds would shatter against each other and the space in between them unfurled and unraveled violently, the instability caused by this rippling across all of the Existence. Time would begin to fold onto itself and trap many lives into unbreakable loops until they went mad, and I bore witness to entire realms collapsing onto each other and universes locked from travel due to the instability causing all laws to disintegrate into utter chaos. Nothingness would bleed into the Existence and undo all the efforts of Tilisnet and Seclir, and neither Nix nor I could do more than observe how the uncontrolled entropy ravaged the living and metaphysical into nonexistence.
Ulym himself had not improved and had trapped himself into one of the locked universes, uttering complete madness as the 'pupils' of the 'eyes' would dart and glare into various dimensions and stare into my very being every time I had glimpsed into the locked universes. The time of the opening of the twentieth 'eye' was nigh, and we could not predict when the twenty first would open and bring forth the Severance Unto Nihility.
Tilisnet, Seclir, Nix, and I could no longer manage the damage uncontrolled entropy caused, and so we had resolved to take action against Ulym directly, something we had never conceived would ever occur.
By the time we had created our plan, more than half of the Existence was destroyed or irreversibly warped into unrecognizability.
Seclir and I would forcefully merge the locked universes and twist the remains of collapsed dimensions to create a 'sprout' that we tasked Tilisnet and Nix to 'plant' at the very start of the first Cycle, and this sprout would be further twisted by Tilisnet to create the beginning of the Helix of Undoing.
This 'seed' would be our final hope before the twentieth eye fully opened, the catalyst to create the direct opposite of the Laws of Order where time flowed backwards among many other strange Laws. This would become the essence of the Helix, where ends would come before beginnings and reality is no longer separate from the imaginary or unfathomable; where death comes before life and all things would be created before a nothingness could be born.
Whatever we could fathom in our Cycles would not apply in this parallel to the Laws of Order, and we pleaded to our very essence that Ulym would not break through the Helix of Undoing.Â
As many Cycles passed since the sealing of Ulym, the mantle of the concept of Entropy has been passed to myself among my duties as the Watcher, though Seclir has long forgotten why I had assumed this role, and Tilisnet, who is the only other that remembers, has sealed himself away in the in-betweens of the High Realms since his Realm was destroyed.
Nix holds great malice towards us as he believes we had abandoned him, but he too has forgotten Ulym.
It is unlikely that Ulym will ever be unsealed, and by the time the Laws of Order undo themselves in a Cycle far from even my own perception, the Helix of Undoing will have run its course and the 'eyes' of Ulym will be closed once more.
This hope and the Helix are the sole things that grant me the strength to continue my duties...But I fear that when the day comes where the Laws of Order and the Helix of Undoing meet at the Point of creation and undoing, Ulym's and my kin and I's roles will be reversed, and we will be sealed in his steed as we, too, go mad.
May Ulym never again see the light of creation in the Laws of Order.
