i'm not a fan of when Trek leans into ideas of ~fate~ or ~destiny~ because i think it goes against some of the core values of the franchise...?
not because i think Trek has to be staunchly materialist- space fantasy is fun!- but because much of the optimism of Star Trek comes from the idea that we can *choose* to be better. everyday we make decisions, and we can make the right ones. and that includes everyone. you don't have to be born ~special~ or extraordinarily talented in some way. what's most important is to be kind. to have empathy, and to strive to be better. *that's* how humanity will reach the ~star trek future~
to take away that individual autonomy and emphasise that certain people are somehow fated to do great things, or that certain events *have* to happen to ~save the timeline~ just...flies in the face of that message. imo.
