“Sometimes I can’t help but wonder if I am actually human. I have been used as a vessel for deities so many times I can’t help but feel like I lost my humanity long ago” Zelda mused. Those words had always been on her mind but never uttered out loud until now. They never wanted to tell Link how inhuman she sometimes felt. How it felt like her body wasn’t her’s but the Goddesses. Those feelings would always linger no matter how many years would pass.

“Your Frodo. Did you ever tell him how you felt? How devoted you were to him?” it was nice to switch the focus of the conversation onto someone else. Talking about herself became so draining after a while. Being the centre of attention had never been Zelda’s cup of tea yet it seemed like fate had different plans for them. Time and time again the princess would be in the spotlight and every single time they felt discomfort.

“I hope Frodo will end up here in Sallow. You deserve happiness, my dear Sam”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Samwise didn’t have a good response for that. He had never come close to a deity in the way Zelda had, and he couldn’t hope to come up with something that wasn’t grasping at straws. But he tried anyway, because Sam would never let anyone he cared for go uncomforted. “I can’t say I know much about your background, but I do know you. I know you’ve got a big heart, and a level head, and you’re stubborn beyond belief. I think those are very human qualities indeed.”

Finally stepping back to resume cooking, Sam chuckled a bit at her question. “I did tell him, yes. I told him all the time, for years of my life, though it did take a long while for me to figure out just how deeply I meant it. I worked for him, you see, and its common to pronounce your devotion to the one you serve like that where I’m from. I realized it at a bad time, but we were lucky enough to get the chance to be with one another when we returned to the Shire. He sighed a little at that, vegetables going into a pot on the stove to soften.  “You’re too kind, Zelda, but I do too. I really do too… You know, its funny. You remind me of him quite a bit sometimes.”

Catra nodded slowly. “It’s the most gorgeous name in the world,” xe said, and then giggled. “Fitting too, as I a-dore Adora.” It was stupid, but it made her laugh a little bit.

It was an easy silence between them as they walked, and xe turned toward Midna again as she spoke.

“Thanks,” xe said. “I suppose if it happened for you it might for me too. I mean, I’ve only been here a couple of days. And I’m certain Adora is searching for me. If anyone can find a way here, it’s her and her friends.”

It was an interesting thought, thinking of Adora, Bow, and Glimmer here with xem. To be honest, Catra didn’t really care where xe were, as long as Adora was with xem. This strange little town would do just fine if Adora showed up. Xe allowed xemself to feel a semblance of hope.

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Catra’s affectionate look made Midna smile a little to herself. She liked seeing people happily in love, even if she didn’t have anyone of her own. Midna was willing to play a lot of parts, but that of the crotchety stick in the mud wasn’t on the list.

The woods were quiet as they walked back. Midna couldn’t say she minded the companionable silence. She rarely minded when it was quiet anymore. It was so rare she got the chance for a break.

“I hope she does come along. I’d hate to think you feel stranded out here on your own. I’ve been there and I know what it feels like. Not fun...” Midna shrugged a little. Idly, she wondered who was searching for her. There had to be dozens of guards and patrols out looking. A queen didn't just up and disappear, yet here she was.

Midna looked down at her walking partner, trying for a reassuring smile, and hoping it didn’t come off as too sinister. “And if you need anyone around in the meantime, I’m usually around doing this or that. Not too busy for another friend hanging around. No pressure though.”

“If he ever gets here, you’re teaching him how to behave around technology . You brought it up, you get to handle him,” Ciri gave a laugh, but it was cut off too short. Being without her parents wasn’t what bothered her. Them having to bury her was what sat heavily in Ciri’s chest, having already come far too close to that fate in the past. She squeezed around Yenn’s hand once, more as a comfort to herself than her mother. “Neither of you will let that happen.”

The bed and breakfast came into view, Ciri leading her mother inside and to the door of her room. She was reluctant to separate contact from Yennefer, but practicality won out as she dug in her gym bag for her key to unlock the door.

The room was plain, pretty in an unoffending, universal sort of way. Thick curtains, light colors, light wood furniture. Ciri dropped her gym bag onto the small bed as she stepped inside, fishing out a slightly larger one to begin placing her meager belongings inside. “You can come in, I won’t be long. I didn’t see the need for much.”

Basic toiletries, a few changes of clothes, everything she had appeared with. Zireael, thankfully, was included with the latter. Leaving Cintra had taught her at least one thing, to pack light. Safety in one place was never a given.

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Squeezing the hand in her own, Yennefer shook her head. “No, no we will not. So long as I have my way, and you know I always do, nothings happening to you.” Briefly, the phantom figures of The Hunt crossed her mind, but she dispelled it as fast as it came. They were spheres away, and the pair of them were stuck here. Ciri would be fine.

As she followed Ciri on the way to her room, Yennefer surveyed the people in the bed and breakfast. She liked to see who was where, who they were meeting, and to surmise the why behind it. In short: she was nosy.

When they got up to Ciri’s room, she slipped in when she was directed to. It was much the same as the one she had stayed in upon her own arrival. “When we get back to my flat, we’ll match up our schedules, and find a day where we can go out to the shops to get you some new things.”

Yennefer was surprisingly used to being thrown headfirst into lands that were wholly unfamiliar and not her own. That wasn’t the issue. The issue stemmed from her isolation from the familiar. This world, Earth, was too different from what she knew for her to feel comfortable in being alone there. With no assurance that her Chaos would continue to work as it should, and no head over heels witcher ready to hop to her defense at a moment's notice, she knew that secondary protection was her best bet.

Approaching Hills Hunting, she tightened the belt of her black woolen coat as if that would somehow serve to warm her up. Though she was dressed in layers of beautifully made black and white pieces of clothing, the chill in the air was still seeping into her bones. Luckily for her, the interior of the shop was much warmer than the outdoors.

She had only been in the shop for a moment before she watched as the shopkeeper entered from the back. She watched as a blade fell from the box he was carrying, and gave a little nod at the request. It wasn’t until she was halfway down that she registered what it was that had caused him to stumble. A dragon!? A fucking dragon. One that looked all too similar to– no. She would think about him later. Not now. This town would be the death of her aching heart.

She tore her eyes away from the little beast, and walked the knife over to the display, holding it out to him in a way that wouldn’t slice either of them in the passing off. “You know, it's not particularly professional for shop owners to have such a loose grip on weaponry when customers are present.”

@sinnersxonly

Don’t get him wrong, Samwise loved his job. There were few things that he could think of that would suit him better. The satisfaction of creating something great and lively from a tiny seed was immense. It brought him back to better times— back to the days of curiously watching his father work on the kitchen table when he was a lad.

Of course, there were some days where his job was exhausting. Whether it be from problem customers, or a ruined tray of products, or an experiment ending in failure (as it had been today).

So, Sam did what he always did when he had a long day; he went to the local pub. The White Rabbit was a nice place to unwind. It was no Green Dragon, or even Golden Perch, but it was the closest he would be able to get. Making his way up to the bar, he sat down with a sigh. With a tired smile, he met the eyes of the nearest bartender, “Evening to you.”

“Two? Oh wow look at you go” Zelda said and giggled. It was good to know that he did have people that he loved. Because she was pretty biased when it came to love. Without Link in her life he didn’t know how much of Hyrule and Sallow she could take. She would have just shut down and walked around an emotionless robot her entire life. Link had been their saving grace time and time again. It felt like whatever life threw their way, they could handle it alongside their blonde hero.

“Oh hold on you need some salt” Trying to stand up, she let out a low whimper and sat down again. Even though she was slowly getting better and stronger, she could still have moments when her body just begged her to sit still or lay in bed. They really did miss going to work and they did miss being able to do all the things they used to do. But now it felt like their life was put on hold all because of the actions of one man.

Looking down on the floor, they cursed under their breath when they felt tears roll down their cheeks. It was just so unfair. And sometimes it became too much for Zelda to handle because this should have never happened.

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Zelda's comment made Sam chuckle. He supposed it was a bit amusing to think of. If you would've told him ten years ago that he would have the pair of them in his life like that, he wouldn't have believed you. He was a lucky hobbit, no doubt about it.

“Right, I do-“ he started, yet broke off when he heard the sound they made. “Zelda.”

In a moment, Samwise had set down everything in his hands and was at their side. He wiped the residual moisture from his hands before taking each of her shoulders in his grasp. The look he gave her was one of deep understanding.

He reached and tore a paper towel off of the roll, quickly handing it to her.  He used his other hand to lift her chin as a parent would their child. That's when the realization suddenly hit him, the understanding of exactly why he was so concerned for this woman. For some inexplicable reason, she had made her way into his heart like that. All he could do about it was try and make sure she was alright. He tried for a comforting smile, and hoped it worked.  “Deep breaths, that's it. No need for tears now.”

Sam Gamgee was a man of routine, and no whispers, rumors, or tales were about to throw it off. He had been through... far too much to let small things like that spook him. He would believe such things when he found any evidence of it, or heard any first hand accounts. But, for now, he would continue his walks in the forest. These woods reminded him a little of the Old Forest (except there were no malicious sentient trees here... he hoped so, anyway).

When he came across another figure in the forest, he almost left well enough alone, but then the person spoke, and Sam was drawn in. He flashed a smile back. “Takes a lot to frighten me these days, mister... Merlin, isn't it? What brings you this deep in the forest?”

━━━━━━━━━    *•̩̩͙ ♔ •̩̩͙* ━━━━━━━━━

At first, Ciri had been… hesitant about trusting others. In the span of a single night everyone she had ever loved was stolen from her. All that had been afforded to her was fear and the knowledge that some mysterious man would help her. Then she had Dara. Then came Geralt, Vesemir, Lambert, Yennefer. People she loved and in turn, loved her.

She shut her eyes as Yenn kissed her forehead, wanting to stay in the moment forever. Calanthe had loved her, of that Ciri had no doubts about, but not like Yenn. Calanthe was blood and fire, who gave hugs hard enough to bruise only when Ciri was truly in need. Yennefer was soft touches and let Ciri hold her close, didn’t comment when tears would eventually bead upon her lashes.

A quick nod, going to collect her gym bag from where it was forgotten on the ground. She didn’t want to stray too far from Yennefer, not when she had just gotten her mother back. “There’s a woman- Tano- she owns the-” Not an inn, what was the equivalent here? “-I don’t know what it’s called. It’s where they put people who don’t have anywhere else to go. I’ve been there about two weeks.”

She readjusted her bag. “If you have the room for it.”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

It was an extraordinary relief, having Ciri back. It felt like fitting the final piece of a puzzle in place. Yennefer watched her as she went for her bag, taking in every little difference from the last time she had seen her. The mage had lived an extraordinarily long time, and had seen many beauties in her day, but nobody rivalled the radiance of her Ciri. Nobody ever could.

“If I have room for it? What a ridiculous thing to say. Did you leave your sense back on The Continent, cub?” Her words were light, teasing, in a way she hadn’t spoken for a long time. She held out her hand for Ciri to take, “Come, lets get your things from the not-an-inn, then you can settle in with me. I happen to have an empty guest bedroom which I think will work perfectly.”

There was very little Yennefer wouldn’t do for Ciri. As any mother, she had made her fair share of mistakes in the past, but she worked to ensure she wouldn’t slip up with her ever again. “You’ve been well, I hope?”

Dorcas grinned. “I agree. Magic is absolutely stunning. I love not having to hide it here, ever. Anywhere I go, I can have my wand out, and nobody bats an eye.”

“Elves,” she said. “I’d like to meet an elf. Although I doubt they’re as cool as the hobbits.” She nudged him playfully, a grin on her face. “So you were at the nursery right? How long have you been here and doing that? It must have been a shock for you arriving here. I know it was for me.”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Dorcas’ comment made Sam chuckle. He could never fathom comparing Elves and Hobbits; it would be like comparing a shovel to an ephemeral garden. The elves were magnificent, and he felt lucky to this day that he had the chance to see them with his own eyes, and stay in their lands even though it was only for a short while.

“It was a dream of mine for a long time to meet them. I’m glad I got the chance. Nothing in this world could ever match the beauty of them, except my Rosie of course.” He smiled then, thinking of what she may be doing a world away. “I do work there, yes. I own it, matter of fact. I have since I got here, but I’ve been tending plants my whole life. Not much change except now I get paid for it.”

Sam took a moment to figure out how to answer her last statement. He still wasn’t sure he had completely adapted to this new way of life. Most of the things here were still quite foreign. “I’m getting by, I suppose. It's a very different way of living, but I manage. The community sense has been the strangest. In the Shire, everyone knew everyone else, and was always happy to lend a helping hand, but I haven’t seen too much of that here. Not in the same way, if you understand me.”

┊   ┊   ┊   ┊   ┊

SHE DIDN’T SEEM TO BE THROWN OFF BY HIS KNIFE THROWING.  which wasn’t a bad thing.  If anything it made Zsasz more interested in the woman who’d walked into his shop.  She hadn’t even flinched at his movement.  It was impressive, and something that was a characteristic of his girls most of the time.  It was a rare sight in most.  One that he found in Michael Myers and at times Dean Winchester.  ❝ Joke or not, it’s always good to prove oneself as excelling in their trade.  My trade just happens to be weapons. ❞  And using those weapons, though there was little need for an assassin in Sallow Hills, so he didn’t need to get whispers around about that.

HE CROSSED THE ROOM, RETRIEVING THE KNIFE FROM WHERE IT HAD LODGED IN THE WALL.  he brought it back to where it would find a home until someone bought it, tucked away in the knife display case.  He leaned his elbows on the case after that, watching the woman carefully.  ❝ My recommendation depends.  What are you comfortable with?  There’s lots of things here that are good for personal protection, but I wouldn’t recommend a rifle to someone who is more comfortable with blades. ❞

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

People’s modalities were always of interest to the mage. If you watched how someone conducted themselves, you could predict future actions if you had a sharp enough mind. It was particularly helpful when there was a threat present, but from what she could tell, there wasn’t one here. It was bad for business to threaten people in your shop, and the man seemed to have his wits about him. Still, she watched intently as he moved about the room.

Yennefer drummed her fingers against the top of her forearm as she thought. Threat or no, you don’t walk around flaunting a weak spot, so she didn’t mention that she hadn’t the slightest clue what a rifle was. “Blades– that's where my skills lie. Nothing too heavy, and I’d prefer to have a free hand if need be. I like to be able to multitask, you see.”

She had a vague idea of what she wanted, but there was no telling what similarities laid between her realm and this one. There was a strange sense of comfort as her eyes swept the racks and shelves of the shop, before they settled back on him. He was watching her the same way that she was watching him. She liked that; it meant she was dealing with someone who had a brain. There were a surprising amount of people in this town who seemed to be lacking in that area. Mirroring his actions, she leaned her elbows on the case nearest her with a grin. “Easy enough request, so I’m sure you can help me find something.”
